  • Verizon iPhone preorders will start at 3 a.m. February 3
MacRumors received an e-mail from Verizon saying that the carrier will begin its preorder sales of the iPhone at 3 a.m. EST on February 3, just over a week from now.

The February 3 preorder date is just for current Verizon Wireless customers who have their My Verizon account set up. Preorders are limited, so once they're gone, Verizon's preexisting customers will have to wait until the February 10 general sale date.

MacRumors said that Verizon is allowing some AT&T iPhone customers to trade in their phones for credit if they make the switch to the Verizon iPhone. At the same time, AT&T is doing whatever it can to keep those customers. Trade-in prices, as listed by MacRumors, are:
    • iPhone (16GB - first generation): $60
    • iPhone 3G (16GB): $105
    • iPhone 3GS (32GB): $160
    • iPhone 4 (16GB): $280
    • iPhone 4 (32GB): $360

  • Macworld Industry Forum: John Gruber talks about web apps vs. the web
News from Macworld Expo, all week at TUAW.

This afternoon at the Macworld 2011 Industry forum, founding editor of Daring Fireball -- John Gruber talked about the web vs. web apps. He likened the difference to that between the Newton and the iPhone, as the Newton was only able to hold information entered manually, while the web-enabled iPhone provides endless content. That's the main reason the iPhone hit big and the Newton didn't.

John made a distinction between HTML, a markup language, and HTTP, which is a protocol that allows programs to use the Internet. Without HTTP there would be no App Store. In that sense, Apple is a web company.

The best browsers today are Safari and Google Chrome, both of which are based on Webkit, an open source web engine introduced at Macworld Expo seven years ago. Gruber believes WebKit is the best framework to build a browser upon. Most mobile browsers are now using WebKit, including Android.

The reason Apple created WebKit was not only to enhance Safari, before which there was no great Mac browser. Rather, it was to encourage the adoption of the web as a baseline common-denominator platform that people could build upon. When Windows was the baseline for the web, Apple was left out. With WebKit, Apple has the advantage of creating this new paradigm and letting others catch up.

Most video plays on HTML5 devices in H.264 which uses the same format as Flash, but Flash is closed and proprietary software from Adobe (if it breaks, Adobe is the only one who can fix it), while HTML5 is open and has become an industry format which any mobile device manufacturer can use.

The App Store is totally closed and some think that it will extinguish the web, which is under no-one's control, in favor of the market being controlled by one company. This is a false fear. People want both the web and web apps. With one not precluding the other. Apple's apps use the best parts of the web and enhance the experience with enhanced functionality, which benefits everyone.

This is not a real competition with another company, it's a competition with the idea that the web is all you need. Gruber's main wrap-up was that people like both the web and web apps and this will improve both instead of being an either/or proposition.

  • Macworld setup time!

    Who doesn't love setup day?

Forklifts, crates and rolls of carpet for as far as the eye can see. Or to the edge of Moscone West, anyway. I'll grant you that it's not the most exciting part of the coverage we'll be bringing you this week, but if you're curious what the Macworld show floor looks like the day before, here you go.

We're already meeting vendors with some interesting new products, and some developers with some great new apps, so stay tuned (especially if you think this gallery is silly ... it can only get better, right?).

  • New paint supposedly fixes white iPhone production issue

Recent sightings of the white iPhone 4 in inventory systems suggest the release of the elusive handset may be imminent. Another report from Japanese blog Macotakara lends credence to these earlier leaks by claiming the paint problems that plagued the white iPhone 4 have been solved. According to the report, a Japanese company developed a process that lets the manufacturer set the thickness of an applied painting layer. This breakthrough may finally permit the mass production of this coveted white handset.

The white iPhone 4 was announced last June and has been delayed on several occasions. Apple's official statement on the delay of the white iPhone pointed to a manufacturing problem, but the details behind this unexpected problem were never disclosed by the Cupertino company. Rumored reports from multiple sources pointed to a problem with paint, specifically the thickness and opacity, which distorted the color of the white handset. Engadget discusses these trials and tribulations in an excellent article which details this troubled manufacturing process.

If this rumor pans out and the paint problem has been solved, we may actually see the white iPhone 4 materialize in the near future. While customers may have been clamoring over the white iPhone 4 at launch, how many Apple faithful will still jump on the handset now that we are so close to the iPhone 5 launch?

  • Former Newsweek editor planning iPad magazines

Wide Screen iPad MagazineFormer Newsweek Magazine President Mark Edmiston is planning to launch a set of magazines formatted for the iPad, according to a report out from Mashable today. Nomad Editions, a new media company launched by Edmiston, started releasing five digital weekly magazines this past fall -- Real Eats, Wave Lines, Wide Screen, u+me, and BodySmart -- with the newest title u+me coming in February 2011. Each title is offered as a free trial for four editions/weeks, and after that the price is US $6.00 per 90 days or $2 per month -- a pretty fair price for a weekly magazine.

While Nomad Editions will be in competition with some other high-profile, iPad-centric publications like Rupert Murdoch's The Daily and Richard Branson's Project, Edmiston has structured his company a little differently with a small staff of freelancers contributing content in exchange for a share of any revenue derived from sales. With some reports saying that iPad magazines aren't faring well over time this should be a good comparison test to see which model performs better in this new digital marketplace.

  • BoinxTV Home out tomorrow on the Mac App Store

Mike Schramm and I just spoke with Oliver Breidenbach from Boinx, and we're pretty excited to hear about a new Mac App Store release (tomorrow) of a new version of BoinxTV: BoinxTV Home. It's a consumer-level version of the live-broadcast software with a lower price point and distribution through the Mac App Store.

We've covered BoinxTV on TUAW a few times, and it's great to see a more affordable version coming to the masses. In contrast to its US $299-$499 older sibling, BoinxTV Home will be $49.99, and is geared more toward YouTube than broadcast applications. It only works with one camera, but still accepts all video inputs from other applications, so there are plenty of possibilities. It also caps out at 15 layers, but that's more than enough for the average "home" user. Overall, it sounds to us like a good move and will bring BoinxTV to a larger group who could really make use of it's impressive capabilities.

Oliver will be demoing the new version for us tomorrow, so tune in to the TUAW live stream at 11:30 PST tomorrow to see it!

  • XMG Studio attacks EA for Christmas app promotion at Mobile Games Forum
While we're in San Francisco at Macworld this week, there's also a Mobile Games Forum going on in London, and one of the discussions over there got a little heated when the talk turned to EA's big Christmas sale on the App Store.

Mobile developers have said before that EA's big push down on even its most premium games to 99 cents before the big App Store freeze over the holidays, flooding the App Store's top list with its own titles, and claiming lots of the big holiday boosts in sales for itself. Ray Sharma, founder of indie game developer XMG Studio, had this to say: "I think Electronic Arts really screwed the industry at Christmas time, and it's unfortunate, because of what Apple did to support them... They basically saturated the whole iOS community, they got 160 million units out there, and as a developer you had to sit there and watch Electronic Arts saturate the whole app economy." Sharma also said he estimates that XMG lost 15-20% of December revenue from its iOS games because of EA's move and Apple's support of it.

Of course, we're not sure where Sharma can get a number like that -- it's very hard to estimate what people would have bought that they didn't, not to mention that a lot of people see developer complaints about EA's pricing as sour grapes. But it is interesting -- Sharma also promises that if the push towards freemium apps on the App Store continues, EA will eventually regret dropping prices so low, as it won't be able to compete with indie developers at the same price levels, given the costs in creating its premium, often licensed games.

We'll be talking to more developers of all kinds of software here at Macworld, and we'll be sure to gage other reactions to EA's price drops as the week goes along.

  • Ongo News app coming to iPad

Ongo is something new for news consumers. It just launched on the web this week and has just been released for the iPad late this afternoon.

It's a collaboration between The New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today and others to provide a subscription news service for US$6.99 a month. The aim is to provide readers with the best of those papers and other media outlets that join up. They already have the Financial Times and newspapers from Boston, Charlotte, Louisville, Detroit, Des Moines, Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Miami on board, among and others. Some of the content providers provide complete access. Other content is curated. Some content is an additional $ 0.99 a month, but other publications can cost up to $14.99 which is just a tad pricey.

You can sign up for a free day pass or get 30 days free if you want to test drive the concept. I tried the web version on my iPad, and generally it worked well just using Safari. You can change the size of the text, save and share stories and search for topics. I had some trouble launching stories, as the app sometimes failed to register a finger tap.

Ongo will be in competition with Rupert Murdoch's new publication, The Daily, which is due this month at almost half the price. Ongo is ad-free, and it will be interesting to see if people are willing to pay for news that is generally free on the web. The browser interface is intuitive and a nice environment to read in, but ultimately the consumer will decide how it all shakes out. We'll review the iPad app soon.

  • New Apple ad says iPad is "iconic"

Apple has released the latest in its "iPad is..." series of commercials. The new ad, available on Apple's YouTube channel, touts the iPad as "iconic," following the amazing, electric, delicious and musical commercials.

The ad showcases a host of apps and features available on the iPad, including the djay for iPad app, which our own Brett Terpstra reviewed last month. The ad also features an American Airlines ticket being scanned directly from the iPad (American Airlines HD app) as well as over 60,000 apps being available for the iPad on the iOS App Store.

Check out the full video after the break.

  • AT&T offering unlimited data to customers leaving for Verizon
An Associated Press report suggests AT&T is using an unadvertised loophole to entice long-time iPhone customers to stay with the wireless carrier. In this promotion, an AT&T iPhone owner that once had an unlimited plan in the past is eligible to switch back to this plan after a quick call to customer service. Unlimited data is no longer offered to new customers and was removed as an option when the iPhone 4 debuted last June.

AT&T would not comment on this unlimited option, merely stating that "We handle customers and their situations individually, and we're not going to discuss specifics." Some customers were reportedly presented with this option when they called customer service and threatened to switch to Verizon. In these cases, this unlimited data option is not an unadvertised loophole but the standard practice of offering customers extra benefits when they try to cancel their service.

AT&T may also be rewarding faithful customers by resurrecting this plan on a case-by-case basis. Verizon confirmed yesterday that it will offer the iPhone 4 with an unlimited data plan for $30 per month, AT&T would not want to lose long-term customers to a competitor's unlimited plan, especially when that rival is Verizon.

Regardless of the reason, a growing number of individuals are reporting they have been able to switch back to an unlimited plan. If you may be eligible for this switch, take a few minutes to contact AT&T and see what happens.

  • China Mobile says Apple to support TD-LTE

In an interview with Chinese news portal Sina, China Mobile's Chairman Wang Jianzhou was quoted (Chinese) as saying that Apple would get behind the carrier's next-gen TD-LTE network technology:

"Apple has its own problems to deal with and has many things to develop, and currently TD development is not on it's timetable," he said. "Apple has been clear that it will support TD-LTE ... These two years we have been discussing the issue. The situation is currently moving forward step by step."

If Apple has indeed thrown it's support behind TD-LTE, it would be a significant boost for China Mobile, as it could prompt other handset makers to follow Apple's lead.

Up until now China Unicom has been the only carrier to officially carry the iPhone. China Mobile has taken some dubious measures to keep customers from jumping on the unicorn Unicom, including providing online instructions (Chinese) for how to activate an iPhone on China Mobile's network, as well as providing SIM card cutting services at many of the company's outlets.

Of course, there's much to gain from Apple's point of view as well. The company's recent earnings call showed significant growth in China and the rest of Asia, and Tim Cook indicated that the company would make focus more resources there.

  • Macworld Industry Forum: Jason Snell on how Apple does it

News from Macworld Expo, all week at TUAW.

At the Macworld 2011 industry forum this morning, Jason Snell, the editorial director of Macworld magazine, talked about "how Apple does it." His first point was that Apple is not just Steve Jobs. Steve created a great management team that just doesn't get enough press. Regardless of what happens with Steve, Snell says, Apple will do fine.

Apple has an uncanny sense of timing. They don't get everything first but, when they do, they do it right. The Rio was one of the first MP3 players, but it wasn't until the introduction of the iPod that the market took off.

Apple knows to get rid of things when their time is past, like floppy drives, FireWire in some devices and optical discs (now on the way out, see the MacBook Air). A lot of people don't like these decisions when they happen, but Apple really doesn't care; the leadership of the company feels so strongly about it that they continue to make those moves anyway.

  • Macworld Industry Forum: Bill Atkinson on Interface Design
News from Macworld Expo, all week long from TUAW.

    Bill Atkinson
, the developer of HyperCard, and MacPaint among others spoke about interface design this morning at the Macworld Industry Conference.

Not so long time ago, Atkinson noted, users were quite separate from the computing experience. UI design evolved to the now familiar the desktop metaphor, then stopped. This is going to change with mobile devices.

Today, we edge closer to integrating the computer with ourselves, Atkinson said. "Pinch and zoom" is only a beginning, as physical contact with content increases, spawning good and bad ideas. For example, augmented reality fills your screen with boxes and visual goggles suggest future wearable computers.

We're far off from the "floating displays" of The Minority Report and Avatar.

Atkinson went on to discuss what he calls a "memory prosthesis," or the idea of a wearable earpiece that communicates with, for instance, an iPhone. The piece could work with a Virtual Personal Assistant which accepts data from the user's conversational speech. In fact, this assistant hears, sees, speaks and records everything you hear, storing that data in the cloud. That information could later be retrieved by asking questions of the virtual assistant. Of course, this hinges on natural language recognition, which has been the holy grail for some time.

We'll get to see a good test of a computer responding to question-and-answer processing on Feb. 24th. That's when the IBM Deep QUA Project Watson computer (the same one that beat Kasparov at chess) will compete against champions on the TV show Jeopardy. It will spur the imagination of natural language work and put it in the spotlight. Atkinson believes this will be the nature of future mobile phone interface, probably between 2 and 10 years from now. It's inevitable though since he considers it the natural progression of the mobile device market with the device doing very little and the heavy lifting being done in the cloud.

It sounds like, at least according to Atkinson, that the Knowledge Navigator is getting closer to reality.

  • Meet Neon Play, the developer behind Apple's 10 billionth download

Macworld sat down with Neon Play, the company behind the now-famous Paper Glider application. It was the game of choice for one of Gail Davis' teenage daughters who downloaded the app early Saturday morning. At that moment, Paper Glider became the App Store's ten billionth download and earned itself a spot in the annals of Apple's history.

Paper Glider is a simple, but very popular application that lets you fly a paper airplane using a hand-drwan trajectory and precisely timed taps to keep the plane in the air. Before its history-making download, the app topped the charts in the UK App Store and reached as high as #2 in the U.S. It has been downloaded over a million times.

For Neon Play, Paper Glider is one of nine iOS games from the small iPhone games studio. Based in Cirencester, UK, Neon Play was founded last June by Oli Christie. The successful Flash developer quit his job in marketing and launched this growing company. Like any good managing director, Christie is going to capitalize on the PR blitz following Apple's ten billion download promotion. "We're doing all we can to make the most of this one in 10 billion opportunity," he said in this Macworld interview.

For the future, Neon Play is developing three new iOS apps and is looking to add new employees to keep up with its fast development cycle. As a growing company with over one million downloads under its belt and a place in Apple's history, the future looks bright for a company that is just over seven months old.

  • TUAW TV Live at 5:30 PM ET: Special Macworld Expo 2011 edition

This afternoon, be able to join me for a special edition of TUAW TV Live. We'll be starting a half-hour later (2:30 PM PT / 5:30 ET) to accommodate a visit with the boys from Boinx Software, but it should be a fun-filled hour of awe-inspiring silliness from me and whoever else decides to degrade themselves by appearing with me on camera.

The Conference has just begun, with the MacTech Boot Camp and Macworld Industry Forum leading off the schedule today. The actual Expo show floor is abuzz with the sounds of forklifts, battery-powered drills, and panicky vendors, with everyone trying to get the construction of their booths done before 10 AM PT tomorrow. TUAW, however, has the on-floor studio up and running in Booth 1012, so we'll be doing the show in the midst of chaos. At least there will be no cats to short out my mic today...

Come on back to TUAW just before 5:30 PM ET and we'll have all of the necessary tools for you to watch the show and join the chat. See you then!

  • Verizon feature phone users could boost iPhone activations by 19 million

Analyst William Power of R.W. Baird & Co. is making a bold prediction on Verizon iPhone sales. While other analysts and Verizon itself is predicting a conservative 11 million units sold in the upcoming year, Power is projecting a whopping 19 million in sales for the Apple-branded smartphone from feature phone users alone. This prediction is based on a survey of 1,000 people that was conducted to gauge the interest in the Verizon iPhone.

Of feature phone users at Verizon, 11% said they would definitely buy the Verizon iPhone, while 18% said they would probably buy the Apple smartphone. Combined, this 30% could potentially contribute 19 million new iPhone activations for the wireless carrier.

The survey also revealed that 25% of smartphone owners on Verizon will definitely or probably purchase the iPhone when it becomes available in February. This would add another five million activations and would bring the final tally to a whopping 24 million in sales.

Powers does not take into account contract end dates and not all these 19 million feature phone subscribers will be eligible for upgrade in 2011. Even if you consider the worst case scenario of two-year contracts and extend this 24 million over two years, these numbers are still impressive, especially for Apple.

Apple will sell an additional 24 million iPhones and Verizon will lock 24 million of its subscribers into new contracts. This 24 million estimate does not include customers from other carriers like AT&T and Sprint who may jump ship to snag an iPhone on the nation's most reliable network.

  • Witch window manager on sale for 48 hours

The folks over at Many Tricks have put Witch on sale for $10 (normally $19) until 7:00am Pacific Time on Friday, January 28th.

It's been awhile since we talked about Witch on TUAW, but it's a perennial favorite utility to switch between windows.

Witch shows you not just which applications are running, but it also shows you all of the different windows that are running in those applications. For example, right now I have 3 different windows open in BBEdit; if I use cmd+tab switching to move between applications, I can switch to Safari and then back to BBEdit, but Witch lets me switch not just to BBEdit but "I want to switch from Safari to the BBEdit window which has the article I'm writing about Witch."

If you haven't seen it in action you can download a free trial from the Many Tricks website, which also has some screenshots available.

Witch is available for purchase either through the website or through the Mac App Store.

  • Canalys report: iPad sales drive Apple PC growth 241% in Q4 2010

The iPad is an in-betweener device - it's too big to be a smartphone and it's not quite a PC. It can be a conundrum for analysts looking to pick apart Apple's quarterly and yearly earnings as there is no established category for the device. Some analysts have chosen to separate the iPad into its own category ("media tablets"), others prefer to take a different approach and group the iPad with PC sales.

This latter category leads to some headline-grabbing reports similar to the one just released by Canalys. The market analysis firm proclaimed that Apple is now the #3 PC vendor in the world, trailing only HP and Acer. The climb to the third spot was propelled by Mac personal computing sales which skyrocketed 241% in Q4 2010. Much of the growth in this category is due to sales of the iPad. This analysis is guaranteed to spark some discussion as rival firms IDG and Gartner separate out the iPad into a distinct category. Once you remove the iPad from the PC sales equation, Apple barely makes it into the #5 slot.

  • Verizon 4G dongles to gain Mac compatibility in February
If you've got an LG VL600 Verizon 4G LTE dongle, and you've been climbing up the walls waiting to use it with your Mac, you're going to have to wait just a little bit longer. At present, there are no drivers available to support the 4G dongles on Mac computers, but we understand that Verizon engineers have been hard at work rectifying this. And, it seems, the fruits of their labor will be revealed shortly.

According to PhoneScoop, LG VL600 4G LTE dongles will become Mac compatible at some point in February.

So, there you have it! Soon your Mac will be able to cruise the 'net at (Verizon) LTE speed.

  • TUAW's Daily App: iMacworld
The Unofficial Apple Weblog is live here in San Francisco, ready for Macworld 2011. There are some pre-show activities happening today (along with a few offsite meetings we're working on), and then tomorrow the real fun begins, with the show floor opening (it's much larger this year than last) and our full video livestream running straight from the floor all day long. If you're around Moscone this week, the official Macworld app is a must-download -- it's got all the information you'll need about where to find exhibitors (we'll be in booth #1012), conference sessions or certain products, as well as information about local resources and even a community board running during the show.

If you're not here at the show, the app isn't all that useful. You'll probably be able to glean some news out of it, but even better, you can just keep your browser pointed at TUAW all week long, since we'll have lots of interviews, hands-on demonstrations and plenty of other news from and insight on the conference. It's mid-January, and Macworld is here again -- it's going to be great!

  • Apple awarded patent for capacitive touchscreen-friendly 'magic' gloves
Apple received a patent for a glove system that is compatible with a touchscreen. Anyone who has used an iPhone, iPod touch or an iPad in a cold weather climate knows the pain of having to remove a glove to answer a call or check an email. Even thin driving gloves impede your ability to use your iOS device.

Rather than smear your screen with pork fat, Apple might have a more palatable solution for your cold weather needs. This latest patent describes a two-layer glove that includes a weather-protective layer and a layer compatible with a touchscreen display. The layer that protects your hand from the elements will include tactile feedback so you can feel the interaction with the display.

I am not sure how the Apple version differs from gloves already on the market, but as someone who lives in a northern climate, I would love to see a pair of these stylish "magic" gloves hit retail shelves of Apple Stores. Maybe they can throw them into some accessory bundle for us northern folks. And, hey, a pair of Apple-branded gloves has to be better than using a frozen sausage.

  • Apple.com showing changes

Our eagle-eyed readers are spotting subtle changes to Apple.com starting with a gray navigational bar across the top of the page -- which wasn't rendering properly with the iPad at first. There are also bits of animation to other parts of the site, including the Mac page. The core part of the site appears to be the same.

When viewing the page on the iPad, the names on the buttons are missing. The animation on the sub-sites also did not work correctly. The animation loads when you open the Mac page, but it did not work when clicking on "Accessories" or other parts of the bar. Clicking on the icons within the animation itself, such as the Mac mini or MacBook icons, did not work either.

Let's hope that someone is up working overtime at Apple tonight to make the site iPad compatible once more!

Edit (2:40 AM): The animation has been repaired, but the buttons are still lacking text on the iPad.

  • Good Technology Q4 2010 mobile device report shows huge iPad growth in the enterprise

Back in October the enterprise mobile integration company Good Technology released its first quarterly metrics report covering device activations and overall trends; the report showed extremely strong growth for both iOS and Android handsets, and rapidly shrinking share for Windows Phone and Symbian devices. Later today, the company is releasing its fourth quarter numbers for 2010 [PDF document], and the trend lines continue to tell a story of powerful impact for the iPhone and iPad.

While Good doesn't capture a full picture of the enterprise mobility market -- the BlackBerry runs on a different server infrastructure provided by RIM, and the Good software doesn't yet run on Windows 7 phones -- the results are helpful in understanding the slice of the pie that Good's platform does address. For those large enterprises that are trying to support the full diversity of mobile options, Good can see a wide swath of their device activations.

The tale of the tape: Good's customers activated roughly 2x as many iOS devices in 2010 as Android devices, but in the fourth quarter the growth curves for both platforms were largely parallel. Between October and December, iPhones represented 58% of all smartphone activations (mostly iPhone 4 units), while Android phones were about 42% of new device activations for phones.

The real zinger is the iPad's marked growth in the enterprise. From a standing start, 0% share of activations in the first quarter (since it wasn't on the market until April), the iPad claimed 14% of new activations in the third quarter and grew to 22% of all new device activations in the fourth quarter. In a separate snapshot, Good reports a steep growth curve for iPad activations in the financial sector; about 40% of all iPad activations seen were classified as being within financial services or banking.

Granted, Good doesn't look at the consumer retail, small business or public-sector device trends; those numbers will have to come from other places, and no doubt they will continue to show Android growth at the expense of both RIM and to a lesser degree Apple. Still, these real-world data points from the enterprise side show that the iOS story, and particularly the iPad's starring role with big business, has a long way to go yet.

  • Apple Store down and back up with few changes

Hark, what's this? The Apple Store is currently down. We don't know why, but could it be something shiny to entice the fans at Macworld? We'll know as soon as the store comes back up.

Update (3:40 AM): Tonight's changes to Apple's site don't seem to extend to the online store. After three and a half hours, the Apple Store was back online, reminding you to make sure to get a gift for that special someone for Valentine's Day. Sadly, there is no white iPhone available as other sites predicted. However, the ordering pages for the Verizon iPhone are up and running -- even though you can't order the phone yet.

Thanks to the tipsters who wrote in!

  • Personal hotspot for Verizon iPhone priced at $20 for 2 GB, order pages live on Apple Store

Update: Apple's order pages for the Verizon iPhone are live on the Apple Store, but of course you can't actually order a phone yet -- MobileCrunch suggests practicing your order process just for fun and to refine your plan selections. [Just kidding.]

Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney confirmed that the personal hotspot add-on for the iPhone will cost US$20 per month and will provide 2 GB of data. The personal hotspot feature will let you share your cellular data connection with up to five devices via Wi-Fi. This 2 GB of data is separate from the $30 unlimited data plan and is allocated only for mobile hotspot usage. You should watch your usage closely as overages will be charged at a costly $20 per GB.

Rather than undercut its popular DROID lineup with a free mobile hotspot, the carrier decided to play it safe and offer iPhone owners the same rate as Android owners. Select Android handsets on Verizon include 3G mobile hotspot, and this service is billed at $20 for 2 GB of usage. Verizon does offer free mobile hotspot for the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, but that plan was adopted to boost sales of those webOS handsets. Judging by analysts' expectations, the Verizon iPhone won't need that additional boost.

Verizon may be the first carrier to offer personal hotspot on the iPhone, but it may not be last. Reports suggest the feature will be included in iOS 4.3 and will be rolled out worldwide. Similar to MMS in iOS 3.0, individual carriers will have the choice to enable this feature for its users. Now that Verizon has confirmed unlimited data and $20 personal hotspot, it will be interesting to see how AT&T responds. Any predictions?

  • Oregon Trail is turning 40 this year
    Oregon Trail

You may not have heard about it lately, but the classic game Oregon Trail is turning 40 years old this year. Initially developed as an educational game for a history class in Minneapolis, Oregon Trail was released to the public in 1971 developed for mainframe use starting in 1971, and it was later released for the Apple II computer. As an educational tool, players take on the identity of a wagon train leader bringing settlers from Missouri to Oregon in 1848, using their problem-solving skills to help their group survive disease and food shortages along the way. Points are rewarded based on how well one did at these jobs and keeping their family members alive until the end of the journey.

For fans of the game, back in August we found a clever trailer for the sweding of Oregon Trail, but for those of you looking to hearken back to a simpler time in computer gaming, you can give the game a try by either downloading the iPhone/iPod touch version from the App Store for US$0.99 or by playing the original Apple II version online at Virtual Apple.

Oops! Yes, that should have read 1971, not 1981. While the game itself was originally designed starting in 1971, the MECC Apple II version was first published in 1978. Our apologies for the confusion.

  • Free Photoshop Express 1.5 for iOS adds Retina Display support and more

Adobe has updated Photoshop Express for iOS 4.2 devices, and it now supports the Retina Display for better quality images. The app is faster and more responsive and adds background uploads and multitasking support.

The app provides a limited subset of Photoshop functions, like crop, straighten, rotate, saturation, contrast, sharpen and other basics, and it includes a way to add frames.

If you have a Photoshop.com account, you can access any of your stored pictures. People who updated today are complaining that the app took some features away if location services are not enabled -- something that wasn't true in the older version. Specifically, if location services are turned off, the app reports that "Photo metadata cannot be added or preserved, and browsing through photos in the library will be disabled."

Photoshop Express is free, but it now requires iOS 4.2 or greater. It runs on the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone.
