  • Mophie Pulse adds stereo speakers, extra vibration to iPod touch

Gamers who enjoy playing on the iPod touch can look forward to getting their world rocked by the Mophie Pulse, a sort of 'rumble pack' case that Mophie is showing off at CES 2011. The pulse will feature front-facing speakers as well for stereo sound while you play games.

If you're worried that sudden vibrations might cause you to accidentally drop your iPod, Mophie has added a rubberized grip to help ensure that your game doesn't get away from you.

While there's no word on a release date or pricing just yet, this certainly looks like a fun addition for anyone who likes gaming on the go.

We'll try to get a closer look at this unit from the show floor.

  • Realmac talks about the future of the Mac App Store and reduces pricing
In anticipation of tomorrow's opening of the Mac App Store, Realmac Software announced pricing for its line of Macintosh software that will appear in the store. In a blog post yesterday, Realmac wrote that it believes the Mac App Store will usher in more focused apps that will do one thing and one thing well. The days of Swiss Army types of programs may be winding down. Realmac also believes upgrade pricing is a thing of the past with software vendors taking a cue from Apple that sells its iLife and iWork suites for a set price and provides minor upgrades until a new full version is released when the consumer is then charged the full price for the new version. Lastly, Realmac believes that prices of apps in the Mac App Store will get cheaper since the iOS App Store created an auction market that drove down prices. Where prices will end up is anyone's guess.

In light of this, Realmac made some pretty big changes. RapidWeaver, the web site creation tool, is dropping in price both on the Mac App Store and on the Realmac site, from US $79 down to $39.99 for a limited time. It seems like Realmac is taking a flyer on this, since they are interested in seeing how prices shake out, and intend to adjust the price accordingly as time goes by.

LittleSnapper, a powerful, flexible web site and screen capture utility (read our review of the 1.0 release here) is dropping in price from a previous $39 to $24.95 on both the site and the Mac App Store.

Courier is a social networking app that let's you create a postcard and drop photos, videos or documents on it that will be transferred to your choice of a number of sites including: Flickr, Vimeo, Amazon S3, Ember, YouTube and Facebook. Courier is being taken out of the Realmac online store altogether and will be the first app that's only available in the Mac App Store. The price will dramatically drop from $19.99 down to a very inexpensive $4.99 when it hits the store. In an unprecedented move, Realmac will refund the purchase price for anyone who previously bought Courier and re-buys it in the Mac App Store. I'm very curious to see how this gamble plays out. Here's our first look at Courier when it launched.

Socialite, is one of fellow blogger TJ Luoma's favorite apps of 2010. It collects all of your data from Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Flickr, Google Reader or just about anything else into one program. Socialite has been sold off to Apparent Software, who will be selling in both in the Mac App Store and on their site for $9.95 as an introductory price, down from about $25 for the ad-free version.

It looks like the first few weeks, or months of the Mac App Store will be similar to the trampoline ethic of the iOS App Store where prices fluctuated all over the place at introduction and took some time to calm down. If I were you, I would keep a sharp eye out for potential bargains showing up tomorrow and grab them while you can. When the market settles, I'm sure that some of the introductory bargain prices will vanish like a puff of smoke.

  • DocScanner successfully transitions from iOS to Mac app

Today I spent a half hour playing around with the first iOS app to Mac OS X app port I've gotten my hands on, and if DocScanner is any indication of the quality and usability of other iOS apps transitioning to the Mac, the Mac App Store is gonna rock indeed.

DocScanner iPhone is an existing app that turns your iPhone into an OCR scanner. You simply snap a photograph of a document and the app uses built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to extract the text from the document. The app then lets you save the text as a PDF for emailing or sharing with Evernote.

DocScanner Mac is the OS X version of the iPhone app that works just as well and offers added functionality because it allows you to turn any camera into an OCR scanner. Simply snap a picture, import it to your Mac then drag it to DocScanner Mac's interface. You'll then be presented with a PDF version of the text which you can copy and paste into any editable document. The logic for bringing DocScanner from the iPhone to the Mac doesn't end with simply allowing you to use any camera as an OCR scanner. Porting the iOS app to Mac OS X allows DocScanner to take advantage of the OpenGL 3D accelerated graphics on your Mac. The results are much faster image processing and OCR extraction than you could ever hope to get on your iPhone.

Out of the hundreds of thousands of apps for iOS, a large majority of them would probably not offer added user value if they were ported over to Mac OS X (like currency apps or apps that are fronts for websites such as Mint or Yelp). But an app like DocScanner is an excellent example the the usefulness that select iOS-to-Mac ports will provide.

DocScanner iPhone is on sale now in the App Store for US $0.99. DocScanner Mac makes its debut tomorrow exclusively in the Mac App Store for US $14.99.

  • The Tivizen, over-the-air TV antenna, coming to iPad
We're live at CES this week, and things are kicking off here in Vegas. The show floor itself opens tomorrow, but electronics manufacturers have already started up with all of their announcements and reveals showing off all of the new hardware for 2011. Here's one interesting gadget: the Tivizen is a device created by Korean company Valups which plus into the iPad's dock connector, and along with a free app, allows for the iPad to recieve digital over-the-air broadcasts of television. That's pretty handy -- depending on standards and availability, you should be able to watch most major broadcast channels in large US metro areas directly on your iPad.

The Tivizen is priced at $99, which puts it in line with something like the EyeTV. Hopefully not for too long, though -- the device requires its own battery, which only lasts a couple of hours. If you've been looking for a way to watch a broadcast show you can't otherwise see, specifically on your iPad, the Tivizen might be just what you're looking for. Odds are there's some other way to watch that video on Apple's tablet, no?

  • Apple support profile lists purchase history, sign up for VoicePass and SMS

Apple quietly released My Support Profile, which offers a hardware purchase history and access to Apple's VoicePass, its trademark filed shortly before Christmas.

Once I signed in, I set up my iPhone to use VoicePass and receive SMS messages (available only in the U.S.) from Apple Support. VoicePass will link Apple Support to your product history and allow them to provide personalized service.

The right side of the page features a list of repairs and products that you've purchased and registered with Apple. You can also add nicknames to your purchases. The purchase history area is a bit spotty -- it registered my very first Apple product (15 GB 3G iPod from 2004), but missed the 5.5G iPod purchased two years later, iPhone 4 and iPad. But, it's easy to add your other products. Clicking on the product will show you if it's still under AppleCare and extend your AppleCare if it's available.

The support profile is a handy place to update your contact information with Apple as well. It's worth taking a few minutes to go make sure your Apple profile is up to date and remind yourself of some of your past Apple purchases and repairs.

  • Pioneer reveals SmartCradle for iPhone, shows display concept at CES
Car audio company Pioneer just held a press conference here at CES, and TUAW was in attendance to see the reveal of their new SmartCradle product, a mounted iPhone-specific dock for the car. As car docks go, this one is pretty solid -- it is iPhone-specific (though the latest iPod touch will also work), and it's a "smart dock," which means that it will send its own built-in GPS information ("enhanced," Pioneer told us, by an onboard gyroscope and accelerometer) to Core Location for any location-based app you happen to pull up. In other words, it's a superpowered GPS device that also serves as a Bluetooth mic-and-speaker enabled in-car mount.

The dock also has what's called "automatic sound leveling" (which monitors your in-car environment and adjusts its speaker level to make sure you hear GPS directions or other output when things get loud), and has actual audio and video output, which will send video from apps with video-out enabled to another screen in the car. No pricing or date has been announced for the SmartCradle, but Pioneer is supposed to have it out sometime later this year.

And speaking of video out, Pioneer also showed off a concept called Network Vision Heads Up Display at the show (and will have a unit running on the show floor featuring the technology). You can see a picture of what they showed after the break -- the idea is that you would plug your smartphone into the car, and then get video from the device projected directly on the windshield as a display. This is still just a concept, but it's an interesting idea. We'll take a look at how it works on the show floor and let you know.

  • iWork 9.0.5 Update adds ability to share presentations on iWork.com
I've been waiting for the ability to share a Keynote presentation as an actual presentation on iWork.com, and it's finally here.

In another update (yesterday brought iLife updates for iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband) squeaking in before the Mac App Store launch, Apple has released an update for iWork 9.0 and later as both a download and a software update.

The release notes mention the usual miscellaneous bug fixes as well as some improvements:
    • Adds support for playback of Keynote presentations on iWork.com public beta, with over 15 animations and effects, when using the latest version of Safari.
    • Adds support for Keynote Remote 1.2, including high-resolution slides for the Retina display.
    • Addresses an issue in Keynote with ruler numbers when moving or resizing a shape or scrolling.
    • Addresses an issue when exporting a Keynote presentation to iTunes/iPod when iTunes 10 is installed.
    • Improves the readability of ePub documents exported from Pages.
• Includes public sharing and private upload document sharing options for iWork.com to Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.
Apple is recommending this update for users of iWork 9.0 and later, and those of you using the iWork.com beta are invited to test the sharing options and provide feedback.

For more detailed information about this update and individual application changes, see Apple's iWork Update 5 knowledge base article.

TUAW TV Live viewers will know that we had so much fun last on last week's show with our very own Mike Schramm and Megan Lavey that I invited the inimitable Doc Rock to join me this week. That's Doc getting the latex glove treatment at right.

Doc's our unofficial Hawaii correspondent for TUAW, supplying us with a stream of commentary and laughs every Sunday night on the TUAW Talkcast. Today marks his first appearance on TUAW TV Live, although he's been an active voice in the chat room.

Trust me -- you get two guys who love to talk and put 'em in the same virtual studio, and you're bound to have a lot of fun. How do you join in? From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the Read More link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. If you're on an iPad, you should be able to use the Skyfire Browser to watch the stream, although you will not be able to participate in the chat.

We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you get the live stream.

  • iPhone 5 parts caught on video?

Via Boy Genius Report, we've seen a video from a company called GlobalDirectParts which claims to show parts from the next-generation iPhone, or iPhone 5. The company's video shows several differences between the metal case of the current iPhone and the purported next-gen model. Most notably, the "break points" in the case (the black bands) have shifted position, presumably to address the iPhone 4's antenna attenuation issues.

The case design is not radically different compared to the iPhone 4, which could mean that rather than being a next-gen model, it's a slight "iPhone 4.5" redesign for the (supposedly) forthcoming Verizon model of iPhone 4. The case does have a cutout for a SIM card, however, which makes this a somewhat less likely proposition -- unless this "iPhone 4.5" is intended to be a universal GSM/CDMA phone. Naturally, the part could also either be an earlier prototype design or an outright fake.

It may seem early for possible iPhone 5 part leaks, but repair firm iResQ got hold of the iPhone 4's front faceplate as early as February of 2010. The similarities between this new case and the iPhone 4 case also gel with what I've suspected, that the iPhone 5 will most likely be a 3GS-style mini-update of the iPhone 4 rather than a major design shift. GlobalDirectParts claims to have details on this supposedly new iPhone's display and motherboard, too, and will be showing those off next week. In the meantime, click "Read More" and have a look at the video of the case.

  • Withings Smart Baby Monitor spies on infants, beams info to iPhone

Withings, the same company that brought you the world's first Internet-connected bathroom scale and announced an iPhone-based blood pressure cuff yesterday, has now announced the Smart Baby Monitor at CES 2011. This device, which features a wide-angle lens, 3 MP sensor, and night vision with infrared LEDs to light up your spawn.

The Smart Baby Monitor is primarily made for use with the iPhone, and it's more than just a one-way monitor. Sure, you can check to see if the baby is doing OK through video and audio beamed to your iPhone, but you can sing lullabies to your little one from another room as well.

But wait, there's more! Withings equipped the Smart Baby Monitor with humidity and temperature sensors, so you can check on the ambient conditions in the nursery while you're in Vegas partying making dinner. The monitor is a small, white box that turns on when you open the lid and shuts down when you close it. If you're not paying attention to the video or sound, you can set alarms to go off when there's a certain amount of activity or movement in the crib, or if the temperature or humidity goes out of pre-set limits.

Withings has not yet determined a price for the Smart Baby Monitor. The product is expected to arrive in late March, 2011.

  • iKlip attaches iPad to mic stand, musicians rejoice
If you're musically-inclined techie, you probably noticed the introduction of IK Multimedia's iKlip late last year, we certainly did. And since several of you probably received an iPad last month, we thought it was worth a mention today. Especially for the musicians out there.

Musicians have embraced the iPad from the beginning, but have struggled to find a practical way to use to read music while playing an instrument. Thankfully, IK Multimedia has come up with an obvious yet effective solution to this predicament, the iKlip.

The light weight, multi-angle iKlip, attaches your iPad to just about any microphone stand with ease -- vertically or horizontally, with access to all your iPad's buttons. Built with "...thermoplastic molded components for extreme durability and secure holding abilities under the most demanding situations," you'll have no further difficulty reading musical score while playing your instrument, tweaking settings for your guitar effects app or even singing the lyrics to your favorite kareoke song. Hey, if you're a public speaker, this is probably worth you checking out too.

The iKlip is available for US$39.99 from IK Multimedia's website here.

[Thanks to commenter hankermac for pointing this out.]

  • MacBook Air SSD upgrades to ship next week from OWC

Other World Computing (OWC) wowed us today by announcing its Mercury Aura Pro Express Solid State Drive (SSD) line, an SSD upgrade option for all 2010 MacBook Airs. They offer greater speed than Apple's factory offerings and much more storage.

OWC claims peak data rates of 275MB/s, making them up to 22% fatster than what's currently available. There are four models to choose from: the 180GB model sells for US$499.99, the 240GB costs $579.99 and the whopping 360GB model bears an equally staggering price - $1179.99. That's more than a stock 11.6" Air. Each comes with a three year warranty. Pre-orders are being taken now, and OWC hopes to start shipping "...on/around Wednesday, January 12th."

You'll remember that Apple recently ended PhotoFast's intention to sell SSD upgrade kits for the MacBook Air, but that could have been due to PhotoFast's affiliation with Apple's MFi Program. If you get one of these kits, please let us know how it goes.

  • NOOK kids for iPad app -- another reason to buy the kids their own iPad

Did you see those Barnes & Noble ads over the holidays where they were showing off those nice interactive color children's books that run on the company's US$249 NOOKcolor ebook reader? Well, if the kids were drooling at the NOOKcolor, now they can start hounding you for their own iPad.

Barnes & Noble has released a new free NOOK Kids for iPad app which is specifically designed to play over 230 interactive picture books. More than 50 of the books have professional narrations, including the Thomas and Friends, Richard Scarry, and Olivia series.

Parents can decide what books are appropriate for kids of different ages by using the "Parent's Corner" to set limits. To sweeten the pot, Barnes & Noble is offering two free interactive books -- RIchard Scarry's Colors and Kipling's The Elephant's Child -- when you sign up for the NOOK service and place a credit card number on file with the bookseller. For the adults in the family, Barnes & Noble also provides the free NOOK for iPad app.

  • Comcast to offer 3,000 hours of live streaming content to iPad

Comcast has announced its intention to offer 3,000 hours of on-demand, streaming video content to the iPad. Details are scarce (in fact, that sentence just about wraps the story up), but we do know that the service will include both TV shows, live news and movies. How or when (other than "later this year") the ball will get rolling is still unknown.

Comcast explained a bit more about the Play Now feature that will be a part of its Xfinity TV iPad app in the future. Users will be able to access content anywhere there's a Wi-Fi connection. I could have used such a thing when I was stuck with lousy hotel TV a couple of weeks ago.

We'll keep an eye on this and let you know when it goes live.

COMCAST CHAIRMAN AND CEO BRIAN L. ROBERTS ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OFFER LIVE TV STREAMING ON TABLETS THIS YEAR AND NEARLY 3,000 HOURS OF ON DEMAND CONTENT ON THE IPAD
Enables Millions of Customers to Search and Discover Top Shows and Movies Online, TV or VOD, and
Change TV Channels or Record DVRs from www.XfinityTV.com
PHILADELPHIA - January 5, 2011 - Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), the nation's leading provider of entertainment, information and communications, today announced plans to enable in-home streaming for live and On Demand content this year on Apple's iPad(R) as well as Android[TM] powered tablets. Later this year, customers will be able to watch live news, TV shows and movies in their homes whenever they want. Comcast also made two more announcements about its Xfinity TV service today. First, Comcast provided details about the play now capability that will be available on the iPad in the coming weeks and which will enable the viewing of On Demand programming on the iPad. Second, Xfinity TV online (www.xfinitytv.com) has added additional features that transform any computer into a powerful search engine and remote control.
Play Now Capability on Xfinity TV iPad App
Comcast plans to roll out its new play now feature, which will enable customers using the popular Xfinity TV iPad app to watch nearly 3,000 hours of On Demand content, including popular movies and hit TV shows, either in the home or on-the-go, including anywhere there is a wireless connection. The initial selection of programs and movies is just the beginning. Comcast plans to bring thousands of additional choices to the iPad in the weeks and months ahead and to add the same functionality and content to Android powered devices later this year.
Comcast's Xfinity TV app functions as a television guide, remote control and mobile video player all in one. With it, customers can change TV channels, easily search and browse through their TV and On Demand listings, and program their DVRs. Future releases of the app will include seamless access to social networking sites so customers can share what they're watching with their friends in real time, as well as a 'MyTV' feature that gives customers the ability to send and receive personal recommendations with friends on what to watch.
"Live streaming and the play now feature on our Xfinity TV app are two important pieces of our strategy to deliver any content to any device, any time," said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman & CEO of Comcast Corporation. "Comcast has a series of upcoming online enhancements and app releases that are part of a much larger effort to reinvent how customers interact with their entertainment on TV, online and on mobile devices."
Changing Channels on a Television Set from a Computer on Xfinity TV Online
Comcast has also launched a new feature that enables customers to search for their favorite programs and to change channels on a TV set from a computer via XfinityTV.com. The feature enables millions of customers with laptops or desktop computers to browse, search and find TV and On Demand content online and then select and watch it on their TVs or program their DVRs to record programs for later viewing. This feature also transforms any computer into a sophisticated remote control.
XfinityTV.com offers more than 150,000 online video choices and growing. The site also offers management tools that enable a more personalized experience such as a 'Watchlist' feature that helps keep track of TV shows and movies wherever they are playing - on TV, On Demand or online.
Today's announcement is yet another in a series of scheduled app releases Comcast's development team will deliver on as many different devices as possible including other smart phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers.

  • iHome gives further details on AirPlay-ready speakers
iHome's first AirPlay compatible wireless speaker system didn't make it out for the holiday season as expected, but they have just released further information on the system, now known as the iW1.

We first got wind of the iW1 last September. Back then we simply knew that it would be a wireless speaker that incorporates Apple's AirPlay technology, and that it runs off of a rechargeable battery. It streams digital lossless audio from your iTunes library and compatible device (using Apple's Remote app or iHome's own custom app).

Today, iHome has shared some additional tidbits, including:
    • Multiple iW1 speaker support -- enjoy music streamed all around your house simultaneously with AirPlay and multiple iW1 speakers
    • Built-in rechargeable li-ion bettery with included charging base
    • Studio Series speakers -- high performance audio featuring Bongiovi Acoustics DPS with specially tuned woofers and tweeters with a clean, efficient Class-D amplifier
    • iPhone / iPod / iPad docking, charging and local audio playback via USB cable
    • A capacitive, backlit, touch-sensitive control panel
Electricpic reports that the iW1 will retail for £299 (roughly US$465 as of this writing) and should be available around February or March of this year. That's quite a steep price, but just slightly undercutting Sonos ZonePlayer 120 at US$499 (we recently reviewed the $399 Sonos S5).

  • Remote HD brings AirPlay to older Apple TVs

Well, we did not see that coming. Although there's been a flurry of development around the AirPlay service for iOS 4.2 devices, iTunes and the current iOS-based Apple TV model, expectations for ever seeing the instant-play capability on the older Mac OS X-based Apple TV models were quite low. Of course, where official support is not forthcoming, enter the legions of eager hackers.

The team at FireCore (producers of the aTV Flash unlock & enhancement suite for both original and new Apple TVs) have relayed the news today that the Remote HD iPhone app (US$3.99), when paired with an unlocked first-gen Apple TV, enables AirPlay video playback from iOS 4.2 devices to the older ATV models. Audio-only streaming isn't in this build, but is coming soon. You can unlock your Apple TV 1st-gen using the open-source atvusb creator, or with the $40 full-featured aTV Flash product.

It's not clear exactly how the Remote HD device-side plugin is performing this fancy trick, but we'll try to get word from them and expand upon it soon. Meanwhile, if you've got an unlocked original ATV, check it out!

Thanks to Pratik & Tomek for the tip.

  • Bodega expects to thrive along side Mac App Store

Competition is a good thing, and the leads behind Bodega say they'll be there right alongside the Mac App Store when it debuts tomorrow.

"Bodega is not going anywhere," product designer Phil Letourneau told The Loop. "It will continue to grow in terms of developers and customers coming into Bodega."

Bodega recently updated to version 1.3 and Freshcode is promoting the software as a approval-free alternative to the Mac App Store -- unless submissions are offensive or contain illegal content -- with no restrictions to APIs. Developers will also incur more revenue -- 93 percent with Bodega versus 70 percent for Apple.

We wish the folks behind Bodega good luck and look forward to what Apple will reveal on the 6th.

  • iPad 2 mockup, case appear at CES
    Dexim iPad 2 case
We have already seen a few iPad 2 case renderings hit the Internet, but Engadget hit the jackpot when they stumbled on a real-life case at CES. The case was developed by Dexim and included a notch for a front camera, a hole for a rear-facing camera and an opening for larger speakers. The case even enclosed a mockup iPad 2 fashioned out of aluminum. The mockup device was slimmer than the current iPad and featured tapered edges similar to the fourth generation iPod touch. Beyond the iPad 2 styling, the case also included a magnetic, removable Bluetooth keyboard that lets you use the iPad as a laptop.

While intriguing, the appearance of this Dexim offering does not bring any new information to the table. All the iPad 2 physical characteristics embodied in this case have been hinted at in earlier leaked information and previous case designs, What is does do is cause us to stop and consider the source information that determined this case design.

As we saw with Hard Candy Cases last year at Macworld Expo 2010, it is common practice for case manufacturers to produce mockup devices and prototype cases prior to a device's release. Dexim may have designed this case using information from sources that unofficially confirmed the hardware characteristics of the iPad 2. It is equally possible that the company is betting the bank that earlier rumors are correct with the hope that it can be among the first to launch a next generation iPad case. Regardless of their source information, the novelty of this iPad 2 mockup will no doubt turn heads at CES and will be a public relations win for Dexim.

  • Altec-Lansing inMotion Air wireless home stereo is Mac and iOS friendly

Longtime audio equipment manufacturer Altec-Lansing has announced a new wireless home stereo system at CES this week. The inMotion Air system is an attractively-styled US$199.95 unit that can receive music from an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or any other stereo Bluetooth-enabled device. Two styles are available -- one in black and the other in a gunmetal finish.

inMotion Air comes with a built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery for portable use, providing up to seven hours of music. For listening to the iTunes library or internet radio on your Mac, the device comes with an included wireless adapter with a range of 100 yards. The wireless adapter is designed with a passthrough connector so that it never needs to be unplugged from your Mac. While you control Bluetooth playback from the individual mobile devices, a remote control is included for handling computer-based content.

Altec-Lansing engineers have tuned the inMotion stereo with a special sound codec technology that counteracts the usual tinny sound quality of Bluetooth audio. One unique feature is that two inMotion Air units can be tied to the same wireless adapter for more immersive sound.

The inMotion Air will be available from the Altec-Lansing website and Radio Shack stores in February.

  • Become a creative multitasker with IOGraph

Ever feel like spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations weren't your true calling? Do you yearn to have a more creative side but can't find the time with all your office commitments? I've got just the thing for you. IOGraph is a fun little app for Mac OS X and Windows that turns all the starts, slides and stops of your mouse into modern art.

Simply launch the app and go about your boring day-to-day office work. IOGraph works in the background by recording all the moves of your mouse in pencil-thin lines on a white digital canvas. When you stop your mouse a dot forms. The longer the mouse is static, the larger the dot will be. By the time you leave the office you'll have created a canvas that Pollock would be proud of.

Besides being cool for making you a savant, IOGraph is an interesting app that allows you to track just how much cursor love your screen gets, and at the end of the day, you'll even have a new piece of art to set as your desktop wallpaper. The image for this post is the result of IOGraph creator Anatoly Zenkov's 3 hours of work in Photoshop. It'd be interesting to see what someone ends up with after playing Left 4 Dead 2 for a few hours. IOGraph is a free download.

  • iPad increasingly popular among restaurateurs, diners

We've been talking about the iPad in restaurants for a while, starting back when the Lecere Corporation began testing their FIRMS point-of-sale system. The iPad seems especially effective for wine lists, and we covered the story about Bones in Atlanta seeing an 11 percent improvement in their wine sales.

According to the Associated Press, an upscale Chicago steakhouse called Chicago Cut is seeing similar results. While the owners are hesitant to lay their 20 percent increase in wine sales directly at the iPad's feet, they definitely credit Apple's magical and revolutionary device with some of the credit. Au Bon Pain is also experimenting with the iPad in six of its stores, using the tablet to do away with paper ordering pads.

The iPad has the ability to simplify a great deal of the order process in restaurants, communicating customer choices and orders back to the kitchen without wasting reams of paper. It's probably only a matter of time before we see even more dining businesses embrace the iPad.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Daytum

Just a couple of months back in this feature, I posted about an app called Dayta that allowed you to track and monitor any type of data you wanted to follow. Now, here's another app that will do basically the same thing, but with a few more features and a little extra style. Daytum is a newly released iPhone app (though the website itself has been around for a while) that will help you keep track of any numbers you want: your calories or weight, your sports team's records and stats or even a business' information. Once you've collected that information, you can display it in any number of ways, allowing you to see and track all of your numbers easily. It's a very flexible system that's limited only by the way you decide to use it.

The iPhone app is only part of the equation, but it allows you to both enter data on your own and monitor it however you'd like. It's very well designed, and it has an excellently simple look and interface for entering data. Unfortunately, seeing your data back is not quite as well done, but that's all right; that information is also available on the website from any browser. Best of all, it's free -- the mobile app is free to download, and the service is free to use. There is a premium subscription available for US$4 a month with more space (and the option to keep your stats private -- that may be a major drawback for a lot of users), but the free version works just fine as well. If you need an app to track some custom data, but didn't want to jump on Dayta, give Daytum a look.

  • CES preview: Docks, satellites, radar, blood pressure and more

Here's a brief rundown of notable items we saw last night at the pre-show event for the press called Unveiled here at CES 2011. We'll have more hands-on coverage of some of these items this week, plus a ton of other docks, more docks, some items that aren't docks, and a few more docks and accessories for your iPhone, iPad or iPod. There may even be some items for your Mac!

We wrote about the Withings blood pressure monitor already, but seeing the device in action was a treat. The app looks easy to use and easy on the eyes, and the design on the hardware is impressive. Withings also makes a Wi-Fi scale and introduced a baby monitor that allows you to see your baby via your iPhone or iPad, but also communicate with them.

The nPower PEG is a "personal energy generator" that uses kinetic energy (like when you walk around) to charge up a 1000 mAh lithium polymer battery. In turn, this battery can recharge your iPhone, iPad, etc. You can also charge the battery using the USB port, but where's the fun in that? It's much more fun to shake the thing like a Shake Weight, harnessing all that kinetic energy so that you can play another hour of Infinity Blade.

Click "Read More" to check out the rest of what we've seen so far.

  • Mophie Juice Pack Air for iPhone 4: Review and giveaway

We've talked about Mophie's Juice Pack rechargeable external battery cases for iPhone before; we did a review of an early model and have given you the news of the Juice Pack Plus for iPhone 4. We finally got our hands on a Juice Pack Air for iPhone 4 for review purposes, so now it's time to give you the skinny on how this battery pack works with the latest incarnation of the iPhone.

    Design and size

Like the previous version for earlier iPhones, the Juice Pack Air for iPhone 4 comes with a USB-to-micro USB cable that is used for syncing and charging the case. The four LEDs that are used to indicate the amount of charge in the battery pack are still there, but have moved to the bottom of the case from the back -- I'm speculating that this was done to make the case thinner.

The older Juice Pack seemed somewhat flimsy to me, but the iPhone 4 edition seems to have been designed with more strength in mind. The case has a silver-colored band around the side to mimic the iPhone 4's stainless steel antenna, and comes in either black, red or white plastic. Installing the case is a cinch: you slide off the top of the case, slide in the iPhone 4 dock connector first, and then slide the top of the case onto the top of the iPhone. The weight of my "naked" iPhone 4 is 4.9 ounces (139 grams); the Juice Pack Air brought the total weight up to 7.3 ounces (207 grams). Without the Juice Pack Air, your iPhone 4's dimensions are 4.5 x 2.31 x .37 inches (115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm); with the battery case installed, the dimensions swell slightly to 5.07 x 2.51 x .68 inches (128.8 x 63.8 x 17.3 mm). There's a photo of the phone and case side-by-side on the next page.

  • Skateboard-inspired grip tape wrap for the iPhone 4
Most people I know are keen on keeping their precious iPhones smooth and scratch-free. They opt for ergonomic surfaces that will keep the device looking cool as it's protected, the smooth surface allowing for easy pocket removal when needed. Sometimes, though, that slick surface can cause the phone to get away from you when you least expect it. So, butterfingers, this may be the solution for you.

SlickWraps has a US$20 skateboard-inspired adhesive wrap for the iPhone 4 that's complete with scratchy skateboard grip tape on the back and faux wood grain on the front and sides. All of the necessary cutouts are there, including one for the Apple logo in the back.

Instead of it being scratched, the iPhone 4 will be doing the scratching. I imagine a phone with grip tape won't be all that easy to remove from a tight pocket, so think about that before slapping this on your device.
