  • Mac 101: Pressing F5 in a text field

    Filed under:

More Mac 101, TUAW tips for new and returning Mac users. If you're typing in a text field (in Safari, TextEdit, or most any Mac OS X app), you can press F5 while your cursor rests in a particular word to see a list of words that begin with the letters after the last space.

Holding down Option and pressing Escape works, too.

So, for example, if you type create, you get a list of words including create, created, and creates.

If there are a lot of words in the list, it only shows the first 100 results, sorted alphabetically. The results come from Mac OS X's built-in dictionary.

This trick is useful for when you have a word on the tip of your tongue, need help with possessive apostrophes, or are stuck on a crossword clue.

  • Tate Liverpool launches first UK iPhone art exhibition tour

Tate Liverpool online tourTate Liverpool, one of the Tate art galleries scattered around the UK (the two main galleries are in London, another is in St Ives) has opened an experimental online exhibition tour for iPhone and iPod Touch owners, which it says is the first of its kind in the country.

From now until the end of August, visitors to the Gustav Klimt exhibition will be able to browse the free guide content to their iPhones over the gallery's wifi network, or download it beforehand as a podcast. Spare iPod touches with the content pre-loaded will be available for hire for just $6 (£3).

According to an article about the experiment in Design Week magazine, the guide has been very popular and upped average visit times from 45 minutes to three hours.

If you want to try the tour for yourself without making the trip to Liverpool, you can enjoy it in full on the web.

Thanks to Jonathan for the tip.

  • Fire at Cupertino campus

A three-alarm blaze drew 60 firefighters to Apple's Cupertino campus on Tuesday night. Specifically, it was in building Valley Green Six at 20705 Valley Green Drive. San Francisco's ABC 7 television news has some video.

Investigators suggested that an air conditioning unit could have been the culprit. Fortunately, all employees escaped unharmed. No word on how much damage was done to the building, although some reports say the smoke damage was substantial.

We're very glad that no one was hurt, and hope the damage isn't too bad.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • SoundMeter for iPhone

SoundMeterDo you need to make basic sound level measurements? For example, do you want to prove that your next door neighbor really is playing music loud enough to make your ears bleed?

Faber Acoustical is coming to your rescue with their US$19.99 SoundMeter for iPhone. They discovered that both the built-in and headset microphones of the iPhone have a flat enough frequency response to make them useful for measuring sound levels.

To quote the technical part of their press release, "SoundMeter measures average sound levels with fast, slow, and impulse time weightings. Peak, maximum, and equivalent sound levels are also available. All sound levels may be measured with Flat, A, or C frequency weighting." Got that?

Faber notes that SoundMeter doesn't meet ANSI or IEC standards for precision sound level meters, but it works very well as an inexpensive level meter for hobbyists. They recommend not using the built-in mic on first-generation iPhones (the headset may be used instead), and SoundMeter should be calibrated prior to use.

Faber Acoustical also produces two other really impressive iPhone apps, SignalScope and SignalSuite. SoundMeter for iPhone is available in the App Store now (click opens iTunes).

  • Play Free Bird!

Next time you're at a concert and just gotta have an encore, don't pull out a cigarette lighter. Instead, launch iLightr!

iLightr is a virtual cigarette lighter for iPhone and iPod touch that is available in the App Store now (click opens iTunes). It's only US$0.99 and is an amazingly good simulation of a lighter.

You can choose from several different case designs, light the lighter with either a flick of the wrist or by sliding your finger along the sparker, and the flame sways back and forth as you move the iPhone. The sound effects alone are pretty amazing.

iLighter was developed by Ubermind and is localized in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. The developers do not offer a guarantee that iLighter will cause an 80's hair band to play an encore, nor can iLighter be used to start fires.

  • Best Buy will sell iPhones

MacNN is reporting that US big box store Best Buy will begin selling iPhones on September 7th. The move could help reduce the long lines that are still developing at Apple and AT&T stores. You may remember a rumor about this last month.

Best Buy has been slowly developing a retail relationship with Apple. A few years ago, certain locations were given Mac minis to sell. That program has matured to the "mini stores" in place today. AppleInsider suggests that a major overhaul of the mobile phone departments at all Best Buy locations was the step that finally convinced Apple to hand over the iPhone.

So, will Best Buy move many iPhones? I still encounter much anti-Apple sentiment from hardcore Windows lovers, and big electronics stores can be an epicenter for that type of thing. However, it seems to be reserved to Apple's computers.

My hope is that the staff is well trained, as I'm sure we all remember the unpleasant experience of shopping for Macs at Circuit City several years ago.

  • Carlsbad (CA) Apple Store opening Saturday

Practically biking distance from my girlfriend's house will be a brand-spankin'-new Apple Store for San Diego North, in Carlsbad. No longer will north county residents have to drive to UTC or Fashion Valley to get a Mac fix. Or fixed, as the case may be.

Apple is planning a grand opening there at 10 a.m. on Saturday, including free t-shirts for the first thousand customers.

And if you see a tall, goofy-looking guy in a Threadless t-shirt, say hi! If it's me, I'll say hi back!

  • Maperture brings geotagging to Aperture

    Filed under:

Maperture is a nifty little plugin for Aperture that lets you geotag photos in your library. We've covered quite a few different geotagging apps for the Mac, but this is the first one that works so well with Aperture as a plugin.

Basically, Maperture integrates an interface to Google Maps which allows you to easily place your pictures on a map, saving the location information as metadata in the photos. Since it's a front end for Google Maps, you get its built-in features like the satellite and hybrid views, etc. In addition, Maperture will automatically place images already containing location information on the map for you. Now the only problem is remembering exactly where you were when you took the picture!

Maperture is a free download from Übermind and requires Aperture 2.

  • Terminal Tip: Burning a disc

Are you a Terminal geek (or wannabe, but not the pop star type)? If so, did you know that you can burn discs right from the Terminal window with a simple command and a drag/drop? Just enter the following command followed by the path to a folder or disk image:

    drutil burn filehere

Don't type the "filehere" -- that's where you put the path to the file/folder that you wish to burn. You can either type the location manually or drag and drop the file onto the Terminal window. But that's not all you can do with drutil; you can also eject media from the optical drive by typing "drutil eject." To see all of the available drutil options, just type in drutil for a quick list or man drutil for a full description.

  • MobileChat now available in the App Store

Today Twenty08 released a new instant messaging client for the iPhone/iPod touch. MobileChat (iTunes Link) allows you to connect to multiple IM services, including:
    • AIM/ICQ/.Mac/MobileMe
    • Windows Live/MSN

In many ways, this application for the iPhone looks like a cross between Adium and AIM for iPhone. This application is feature rich, allowing you to take and send images or IM a phone number from any of your 10 supported IM accounts, Most notably, MobileChat allows you to use Apple's forthcoming "Push Notification" system for notifications when the application is closed. • Found Footage: Misleading iPhone ads?

A slight kerfuffle has kicked up in the last few days about whether Apple's iPhone 3G advertising is too misleading. 37Signals raised the complaint that a recent iPhone 3G ad (YouTube link) set up false expectations, as it shows an iPhone loading a web page, finding a location on Google Maps, and downloading an attachment at lightning speed. Now comes this nice side by side demonstration video as embedded above.

What do you think? Is this false advertising on Apple's part, or should everyone just know that TV ads are always unrealistic?

  • Microsoft Office 2008 updated to version 12.1.2

    Filed under:

Earlier today, Microsoft released the 12.1.2 update to Microsoft Office 2008, downloadable via MS Software Update and from the MS website. The 160 MB update requires Office 12.1.1 and, in addition to security fixes, resolves several bugs. The hit list includes two of my personal annoyances: Word's sluggish launch speed and Entourage's insistence on truncating URLs after the ampersand character. The full list of changes is in the continuation of this post.

Installed the update? Let us know if you see any dramatic performance changes, gotchas or improvements.

Thanks to Erik Schwiebert for the heads-up (and best wishes from TUAW for a speedy recovery).

  • Silly accessories: The Steve Jobs iPhone dock

This thing is right up there with the iPod sex toy and toilet paper dispenser. The Steve Jobs iPhone Dock features a plastic bobble-head doll of Mr. Jobs, gesturing elegantly (as elegantly as a plastic doll can gesture) towards your docked and charging iPhone. Unlike many cool bobble-head dolls (including those that are life-sized), this thing says, "I'm a fanboy of legendary status." Expect your friends to treat you accordingly.

Originally intended to be a one-off piece, the scuptor has put four up for sale on Ebay. Impress your geek friends and scare away potential dates with one of your own.

    Other Apple-inspired oddities include
And finally, this list would be incomplete without the KNG iPod DJ Dock. Oh, yeah.

  • Mac 101: Spotlight, your application-launching pal

    Filed under:

More Mac 101, our series of tips and tricks for new and returning Mac users. Love it or hate it, Spotlight's ubiquitous search has changed the Mac OS X experience; quick and (mostly) reliable full-text indexing is now part of the landscape. It's not just for finding files, however; did you know that Spotlight makes a handy application launcher too?

You can launch most any application by hitting the Spotlight hotkey (-Space by default), then typing the first few letters of the application's name. Chances are it will be the "top hit" for your search, so go ahead and hit Return or Enter to launch it immediately. This approach doesn't have the power-user moxie of third-party launchers like QuickSilver, Butler or LaunchBar, but it's helpful for applications that don't live in your Dock when you want to reach them quickly.

If you've got ideas, suggestions or questions on the Mac 101 front, just let us know below.

  • Evernote for iPhone revved to 1.2, allows on-device editing

If you were underwhelmed by the initial release of Evernote's client app for the iPhone ("Hey, I can't edit these notes -- what's up with that?") you might be a bit happier now that version 1.2 has been cleared for takeoff in the App Store [store link]. The geotagging, photo-note-taking, audio-recording backup brain now gets editing features on the device, longer audio clips, bug fixes and more.

One feature that's been in demand from iPhone users without unlimited data plans is a failsafe switch to prevent note synchronization unless the device is using a WiFi connection; it's present in this version, and it seems like a clever adaptation to the multi-network nature of the iPhone (of course, iPod touch users don't know from this 3G business, and Evernote works fine for them as well). You can download the updated version or check for updates in the App Store to get it.

  • A month later, it's still Mobile 'Meh'

Yesterday, Mobile Me was down again, underscoring how little the service has improved since its introduction last month. Pockets of users have been affected regularly by outages and slowness since the service first came online. MacRumors calculates that Mobile Me has been up 96 percent of the time (that is, down for 13.5 hours) over the last two weeks.

As a Mobile Me subscriber, I wonder if the opening-day trial subscriptions will matter in yet another month: that's when, for many (but not all) the 60-day trial period expires. If those disappointed with the service choose to flee, then perhaps the server load will decrease, and performance will improve for the rest of us.

Of course, we all read Steve Jobs' leaked email, and surmised that he gave many more expletive-laden tirades before the memo was released. We have a promise from the top that service will improve by December, and that's some solace, but what of the meantime?

And what of the blog? Your friend and mine, David G., hasn't posted a thing since July 29, promising an update post that never arrived.

Until then, I suppose all we can do is watch the support page, keep calm, and carry on.

  • Lenovo Olympics 2008 App

Do you want to keep up with Michael Phelps and his quest for Olympic gold? Are you Interested in seeing photographs of women beach volleyball players competing on the sand (nudge nudge, wink wink)?

Lenovo, the Chinese manufacturer of ThinkPad and IdeaPad notebook PCs and other electronic devices, is providing the free Lenovo Olympics 2008 App [iTunes link] in the App Store now. You can download it from your iPhone or iPod touch by going to the App Store and searching for Lenovo; the same app is available for Windows Mobile and Blackberry devices via lenovo.zumobi.com.

While the app is filled with advertising for Lenovo and Intel, it also provides you with photos taken at the Games, news (a bit behind the sports websites), profiles of random Olympic athletes, and blog entries by anonymous athletes. The latter is particularly frustrating, as the blog entries feature the sport and country of the athletes, but not their names!

The app will be available for the duration of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and was developed by Zumobi.
