  • Found Footage: Quicksilver Google Tech Talk

We here at TUAW are big fans of Quicksilver, the inscrutable OS X utility that you really have to use to understand (and even then some folks still don't get it). The developer of Quicksilver, Nicholas Jitkoff, recently gave a Tech Talk at his employer (some search company or another) in which he explains Quicksilver and the thought process behind its development.

  • Coffee Table Mac?

Remember the Microsoft Surface? It was a prototype device bringing an iPhone-like touch interface to a full sized table computer. The specialty home automation vendor Savant Systems has announced the "Apple-based" "ROSIE Coffee Table Touchpanel Controller." Apparently it duplicates the functionality of the company's in-wall touch-screen controllers, but in a 40" display mounted into the top of a coffee table. They don't specify in what way it's "Apple-based," but I would guess this thing probably integrates a Mac mini and one of the main selling points is its iTunes integration. They also don't say anything about it being multi-touch, so I suspect it's just a really big touchscreen. At the moment this thing is still vapor-ware, and of course there's no pricing info, but I wouldn't expect something like this to come cheap.

  • Jobs on iPhone price drop: "That's technology."

Many TUAW readers are a little upset with Apple for dropping the price of the iPhone by $200 after only two months on the market. I would like to say that Steve Jobs feels your pain, but according to this interview with USA Today it is clear that he doesn't. When asked about the price drop and what he would say to customers who bought the iPhone at the original price he replied, 'That's technology. If they bought it this morning, they should go back to where they bought it and talk to them. If they bought it a month ago, well, that's what happens in technology.'

As someone who bought an iPhone not too long ago, I actually agree with Steve. We all knew that the price of the iPhone would be coming down sooner or later, so I am not upset in the least. I am sure the price of the iPhone will continue to go down, much as it has for the iPod, and I'm ok with that.

The interview also covers whether or not the Beatles will be joining iTunes (Steve says later this year), if iPod Touch sales will impact iPhone sales (Steve says either way Apple is making money), and how much impact NBC pulling out of iTunes will have on Apple's business ('Zero,' was Jobs' estimate).

  • Push-to-Talk developer pack

The barriers to iPhone-to-iPhone communication are quickly dropping away. Yesterday I put together a push-to-talk developer pack in the spirit of "just add water", or in this case, "just add point-to-point data transfer". It includes a sample app and code for recording and playing back audio as well as a record-time limiter that will override any push behavior if a message goes on for too long.

What it needs is the inter-iPhone technology. I throw this kit into the wild. Let's see what comes back.

  • iTunes 7.4 is available

After a brief delay, iTunes 7.4 is finally available for download. We knew this version would include ringtones, but here's the official word from Apple:

"With iTunes 7.4, sync your favorite music and more with the new iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod touch, plus create custom ringtones exclusively for iPhone with many of your favorite songs purchased from the iTunes Store. You can now also play purchased videos with closed captioning (when available), easily rate your favorite albums from one to five stars, and watch videos at a larger size inside the iTunes window."

Go and get it, music fans!

Update: Several readers are unable to get Apple's ringtone feature working. Also, people have had varying success with their own ringtones. What has your experience been?

  • Mac BU slowly releasing Office 2008 details

    Filed under:

Microsoft Office: no matter what your feelings are about Microsoft as an entity there is no denying that their eponymous office suite is an important application for the Mac. Sadly, the newest version, Office 2008 for the Mac, has hit some bumps along the development path and has been delayed until January 2008 (one assumes Macworld 2008 will be its coming out party). There is a limited beta going on, but few have been invited to participate and the only glimpse into the next version of Office that most Mac users have had has been right here on TUAW with our gallery of screenshots from Macworld 2007 (which, I should point out, Microsoft was nice enough to provide to us).

Now comes word that the Mac BU (that's the Microsoft Mac Business Unit, which is responsible for most Mac software that comes from Microsoft) has started to post some new tidbits about Office 2008 for the Mac on the Mac Mojo Blog. They'll be sharing more and more info as the ship date gets closer and closer.

During Macworld I was able to sit down with some Microsoft folks and get a brief look at where Office 2008 for the Mac stood at the time. I was very interested in seeing the next version of Entourage, since that is the one Office app I use everyday. Sadly, at that time Entourage 2008 was so unstable they weren't comfortable showing it to me. Luckily, for me, the first new feature highlighted by the Mac BU is one that is new to Entourage 2008: Out of Office replies. That's right, in order to set Out of Office replies in an Exchange envirnonment Mac users are forced to turn to the Exchange web interface (which offers few options for Out of Office replies). Entourage 2008, paired with Exchange 2007, allows Macs users to set Out of Office messages, as well as configure different messages to be sent depending on who is emailing you, and have the message automatically turn itself off after a certain time (which is killer).

  • Top Chef challenge winner gets MacBook Pro

    Filed under:

If you're a fan of Bravo's Top Chef and you haven't watched last night's episode yet, I won't spoil it by telling you who won the challenge and who got eliminated. I will tell you, however, that the elimination winner received a MacBook Pro 17" as the award for the best performance in the challenge. Not too shabby.

Considering the consistently high level of product placement on Bravo's shows, it's not all that surprising to see a Mac in the mix -- style maven Tim Gunn even sports a MacBook Pro on the host desk for his new show. What I wasn't expecting was the high level of enthusiasm the winner showed for the prize -- jumping up and down with glee, and the other chefs writhing in disappointment. Very nice.

    Thanks, Heidi.
