- Quicksilver + YubNub: one search to rule them all
Filed under: Productivity, Tips and tricks, Internet Tools
Over at LifeClever, Chanpory has a post about integrating Quicksilver and YubNub, a kind of web search aggregator with a built-in "command line" parser. If you go to YubNub.org, you can enter searches by entering an abbreviation and then the search phrase (there are apparently over 10,000 existing search shortcuts, and you can even add your own). So a search for "TUAW" on google becomes: g TUAW. Similarly, a wikipedia search starts "wp," an IMDB search starts (wait for it), "imdb", dictionary.com with "d," and so on. Using the Web Search Module Plugin it becomes really easy to add this search aggregator to Quicksilver. Just create a bookmark in your default browser that points to: http://www.yubnub.org/parser/parse?command=***
You should now be able to use the standard Quicksilver web searching model to access YubDub (with the Web Search Module installed Quicksilver will automatically substitute the contents of the text field for the *** and open the URL in your browser). LifeClever has the complete instructions. One really neat thing is you can do multiple searches in one line, e.g. mash Apple g wp will open both a Google and a Wikipedia search on 'Apple' in separate frames of a single browser window.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Gaming, iPod Family, iTunes
Last week, we looked deep into our crystal ball and saw the iQuiz would be the next game released for the iPod.* Today, it's available in both the US [link] and UK [link] iTunes stores, for 99 cents and 79 pence respectively. Similar to the old iPod quiz game, iQuiz asks you to identify your music.
*Or maybe we just saw an article at Electronista. Either way, really.

Sure, those little icon utility menus on the right side of the screen -- displays, sound, Airport, etc. -- are handy, but do I really need the Displays icon there for a desktop screen that never changes size, or the Modem icon when I've got broadband? While you can deactivate most of these through a parent application or System Preferences, there's a quicker way: simply hold down the Command (Apple) key and drag the offender out of the menu bar and onto a blank area of the Desktop. Poof! No more icon.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Bad Apple
Well, it looks like the stock options issue that has been pestering Apple for months now may be over. AppleInsider is reporting today that Apple's CFO Fred Anderson has settled with the Securities and Exchange Commission to the tune of three and a half million bucks. Mr. Anderson denies any wrongdoing in the settlement.
Ok, now that all of this is (probably) over, let's re-focus on Leopard, shall we?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

It's true, I admit it, I have a bit of a thing for tabbed text editors (I'm seeking counseling). Anyway, I've discovered yet another one. Peter Borg (who is also behind the very cool Lingon launchd utility) has just released version 3 of his Smultron open-source text editor (with vertical tabs). This update improves a lot of things, including project management, application speed, memory usage, and not least of all, the interface (the tabs themselves are not new). Though I won't be dropping TextMate anytime soon, Smultron definitely looks like an interesting entry in the free text editor sweepstakes.
Smultron is a free download from sourceforge.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Hacks, How-tos, Tips and tricks, Troubleshooting
Over at Macworld Rob Griffiths has a great column on automatically restarting a program after a crash. Although it is much more stable these days, for a while last year Quicksilver was constantly crashing on me and often I wouldn't notice until ⌘ + space was strangely unavailing. If there's any program for you, like Quicksilver for me, that simply must be running all the times (but which unexpectedly crashes sometimes), Rob's hint is potentially very handy. It basically involves using Lingon to create a launchd daemon that watches for a crash log and then restarts the application when it sees one. Full instructions are available at Macworld. I'm now going to go see if I can get this set up for Quicksilver.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mac OS X ships with a powerful and useful command-line calculator called bc. GNU bc provides an arbitrary precision calculator that allows you to type in expressions for immediate calculation. It uses the standard conventions for computer arithmetic, i.e. + and - are addition and subtraction, * and / are multiplication and division, ^ is exponentiation. So to multiple, say, 193 by two thirds, you'd enter 193 * 2 / 3 and press return. Parentheses set the order of evaluation, just as they would in a normal arithmetic statement or in a computer language. e.g. (20 / 3) ^ 5 performs the division before the exponentiation.
You can also use variables with bc. Just assign them using an "=" command. For example, you can set your principal to 100 with principal=100. The special scale variable indicates the number of digits to show after the decimal point. Enter quit to leave bc.
There's a lot more you can do with bc--it's really a full interactive programming language that goes way beyond the simple convenience of quick calculations. To learn about bc, type
