- Shiira 2.0 goes official
We've seen the betas for quite some time now, but Shiira v2.0 - the feature-packed open source browser based on the same WebKit that powers Apple's Safari - has gone official. As far as I can tell, the feature list hasn't changed wildly from beta into this full version, but check out some of the slick tricks Shiira has up its sleeve:
- Tab Exposé (yep: Exposé comes to browser tabs)
- Sharing bookmarks with Safari
- Side drawer showing bookmarks and history
- Search field with choice of search engine
- Cache control panel
- Window appearance switching (Aqua and Metal)
- Enable/disable favicon with bookmark
- Wheel button operation (open in new tab, and tab switching)
- Auto-tab for bookmark folder
- Displaying back-forward list on toolbar buttons
- Search text field for bookmark and history

- Mac User Groups on the Wane
Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends
Australia's Sydney Morning Herald has an article today about the decline of Mac User Groups. Once the force that brought Apple enthusiasts together to share their interests and expertise, the social face-to-face in-person MUGs are dying out and being replaced by online resources. "People work longer hours, have less leisure time and are less inclined to join clubs for social reasons," the SMH quotes Noel Jackling. User groups are apparently getting smaller and grayer.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Video, Odds and ends, Apple
Yet another Get A Mac ad has surfaced, though this time it is the British version that has a new addition. The ad, called 'Office Posse,' features PC, Mac, and Microsoft Office (those are the people in the colorful suits). Office runs just fine on the Mac, and it is implied that Office would rather run on the Mac (who wouldn't?). Another clever, if not compelling, Get A Mac ad.

More Mac 101, TUAW tips for the new Mac user and for us forgetful veterans. I often hear a complaint from switchers and newcomers: "Why do I have to use the mouse for everything?" Of course, we all know that there are scores of keyboard commands waiting to be used, but some particularly helpful ones are less than obvious.
Check out the Keyboard Shortcuts pane of the Keyboard & Mouse system preference panel. There you'll find my new best friends, "Move focus to the Dock" and "Move focus to the active or next window." With the first shortcut (control-F3 by default; note that on a laptop keyboard, you need to add the Fn key as well, lest you inadvertently mute your sound) you pop up your Dock, and you can select an application with the left and right arrow keys. Hold down the option key and you can relocate the selected app to another Dock slot. It's not a direct substitute for Command-Tab application switching, but it's still helpful.
The second option works like a supercharged version of the Command-` window rotation shortcut, cycling through all your open windows in all applications -- similar to the difference between the F9 and F10 Expose options. This is a great timesaver when you've got two or three apps open and you need to swap between them rapidly.
Have fun exploring the rest of the Keyboard Shortcuts pane!

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, OS, Software, Features, Leopard, TUAW Interview, iPhone
In the first interview of this new mini-series, Brent Simmons of NewsGator / NetNewsWire shared some of his thoughts on Apple's delay of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard in light of the iPhone. For this second installment, Wil Shipley of Delicious Monster / Delicious Library steps up to the plate on feeling like a new programmer again, a reason to be happy that Leopard was delayed and why the iPhone's release is a great time to work at Delicious Monster. Wil has a great perspective on Apple and their products, and - as anyone who reads his Call Me Fishmeal blog will know - an entertaining way with words. Read on for Wil's responses to my questions after the jump.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Bad Apple
Joel Rosenblatt of Bloomberg.com writes that former General Counsel Nancy Heinan may still be sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission for the backdating issues that recently plagued Steve Jobs, Apple, and Pixar according to her attorney Miles Ehrlich. Heinan's history with Jobs goes way back, into the days of NeXT, where she was general counsel before moving with him back to Apple. She stayed with Apple until last May, when she resigned several months before Apple disclosed the backdating investigation.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Merlin Mann over at productivity blog 43Folders is taking a look at the Smart Folders feature of Apple's Mail today. His favorites include a folder to hold "flagged" messages, a recently sent folder (within the last two days) and recently viewed (same criteria).
The one I thought was clever was a collaborative effort between Address Book and Mail. In Address Book, he created a group based on geographic location (particularly, San Francisco). Back in Mail, he created a smart folder to group messages received from contacts in the "San Francisco" group. That's a pretty good idea.
I'm sure you see the question coming: What are your favorite smart folders setups? I actually don't use any, as I want an empty mailbox. Any message that I think requires me to somehow do something I forward to my Backpack "Inbox" page, where it waits for me to decide what it is and act accordingly. But that's me.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/04/23/macapper-announces-switchers-giveaway/#comments - Panic releases Coda web editor
Filed under: Software, Internet Tools
The folks at Panic are celebrating the tenth anniversary of their incorporation today with what developer Steven recently called "...our biggest, most ambitious new software launch of all time." Today, we can tell you that project is Coda.
It's being billed as "One-window web development," and from what we can tell, it looks pretty awesome. I only played with the demo briefly, so there's obviously a lot more to this app then you'll find here (Steven's blog is a good place to go for the full scoop).
First of all, the UI is beautiful. When first launched, Coda offers to import your Transmit favorites, which it did perfectly for me. It then "taped" each project if found in my copy of Transmit to the main window. To work on a project, just double click it and it "flips" into view. One more click logs into the project's remote files and displays them in the left hand sidebar. Select any file to begin working on it. Super easy and fast.
One more thing that needs to be mentioned, and I'm only scratching the surface here, is the "Books" feature. One click and you're brought to a virtual bookshelf that houses volumes on HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP. Click any book to begin "reading" it, and quickly jump to any topic you are particularly interested in just by clicking a keyword. You can also order hardcopy versions of any of the books.
Coda retails for $99 (lower introductory rates are available for now) and requires 10.4 or later. Now if you'll excuse me, I really want to stop typing and return to playing with Coda.

Filed under: Retro Mac, Blast From the Past
Casey Ryback, Steven Segal's character in Under Siege, never had it easy but he had great toys. Sure, he was "just the cook" but apparently SEAL cooks have access to some amazing gadgets. Like special communicators, explosives and Miss July. Under Siege was so successful, the filmmakers decided to create a sequel, Under Siege 2, which takes place on a train with his niece (that actress from Roswell and Grey's Anatomy) and a Newton. No, really! Not kidding here. Behold the glory that is Newton in Under Siege 2.
Update: My bad. This seems to be a repeat of a post from before my time here at TUAW. If you have a great (but non-repeat!) idea for Blast from the Past, drop us a note via our Tip form.

Who among us hasn't seen the geeky "Wargames" from 1983? More to the point, who didn't want to play Global Thermonuclear War with Joshua, the lovable hunk of circuitry that teaches us that, "The only winning move is not to play." So true, Joshua. So true.
To learn the lesson for yourself, check out Defcon. It's an online, multiplayer game (you can play solo if you wish as well) that challenges you to outwit your opponents and blow them all to smithereens. After all, what's a little mutually assured destruction among friends?
