- LogMeIn Ignition update adds file management / transfer capability
LogMeIn Ignition (US$29.99) is a popular tool for making hassle-free remote control sessions to Macs and PCs. We've reviewed the universal app on TUAW before, and it's a well-designed tool for those who may not want to play with router settings and firewall ports to get a VNC connection going.
Now LogMeIn has added a new feature to Ignition that raises the bar for remote control apps. In an update that appeared last week to version 2.0.264, LogMeIn Ignition gained the ability to view, transfer, and save folders between your iOS device and Mac or PC. The capability is easy to use and very simple; you have a choice of either doing a remote control session or a file manager session when you log into your remote computers. Once that's done, Ignition keeps a status screen available containing windows with either the remote control or file manager sessions for each computer you've connected to.
File transfer works very well. In the app is a Local Files folder where you can store those documents that you bring over from your Mac or PC. You can then open those documents in a compatible app (i.e., Pages for .doc / .docx files) and make changes. There is no "round-tripping" capability -- that is, you can't then save those documents back onto a PC or Mac through the app. However, I'm wondering if the "Saved from Other Apps" folder that appears in the Local Files folder is designed for future use by compatible apps so you can do a round trip.
If you have more than one remote computer that you're connected to with LogMeIn Ignition, you can actually move files between those remote computers. There's now support for AirPrint printing of documents that you copy or move to your iPad, and the app can even wake a sleeping remote computer through Wake-On-LAN.
Existing users of LogMeIn Ignition should make sure that they update their app as soon as possible, and those who are looking for a remote control or file management app may want to consider LogMeIn Ignition for their work. Be sure to check out the gallery for screenshots of LogMeIn Ignition at work.

Переслать - Tripit adds itinerary editing to iPhone app
We've been fans of the Tripit app & web travel manager since we first looked at it back in 2009, and the latest updates to it haven't cooled our ardor at all.
Tripit makes simple something that could be very complicated. It takes all the various emailed itineraries you have for a trip -- flights, hotel bookings, car rentals and so on -- and turns them into one master itinerary with your car rental booking following your flight and preceding your arrival at your hotel. You can view your itinerary online; the iPhone app gives you offline access to it, and with one click you can add the whole thing to your iCal or Entourage calendar.
Now Tripit has added the ability to edit your itinerary in that iPhone app; for example, you can change a flight time in case of cancellation or delay. You can also swipe-delete items that are no longer needed, and Tripit will notify you of conflicts if you make changes to flights.
The price is still right too; the app is free with ads, or there's a Pro version at US$49 a year.

Переслать - Rumor: iOS 5 will be a 'major revamp,' won't debut until fall
TechCrunch reports that two "solid sources" have said Apple will hold off on unveiling the next iteration of iOS, version 5, until this fall instead of debuting in the summer as in years past. If TechCrunch's sources are correct, the iPhone 5 is still likely to debut in the summer, but it will be running a flavor of the current v4 iOS.
In addition of launching in the fall, TechCrunch's sources state that iOS 5 will be a "major revamp of the OS" that will include:
- an heavily cloud-based iOS, with several new services
- a "music locker" service to coincide with the introduction of new iPods
- a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members
TechCrunch also states Apple will first discuss many of iOS 5's cloud-based services at WWDC in June, and Mac OS X Lion will likely include integration with those cloud-based components.
Until Apple makes an announcement about iOS 5 nothing is certain, but if TechCrunch's sources are right about a "music locker" service, it would make sense to hold iOS 5 until the fall when new iPods are traditionally launched. The extended timeline would also give Apple the time to devote sufficient resources to completing work on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which Apple has said will be released this summer.

Переслать - Dungeon Fighter Online comes to iOS in a Slayer Edition
Hot on the heels of its success with Kart Rider Rush, Nexon has brought another one of its free-to-play MMO titles to iOS. Dungeon Fighter Online is one of the most popular titles in the lineup, save for another game called MapleStory. Dungeon Fighter Online is a free-to-play 2D action RPG that came to North America on the PC last year, and now it's out on the iPhone as Dungeon Fighter Slayer Edition, a version that seems to be a more offline-centric setup of the popular MMORPG. Just like the original game, the action is in 2D and fast and furious, but this version costs US$4.99 outright. While there is Game Center integration, it's not clear how this ties into the PC MMO, if at all.
Unfortunately, the reviews on iTunes aren't great. The game currently carries a 2-star rating, so it doesn't seem like Nexon has been able to bring over what made the original version of the game so popular. There are in-app purchases in the game for expanding your inventory and some extra in-game cash, but it's interesting that the company chose not to try for the full MMO experience, especially when games like Pocket Legends have proved that it does work.
We'll have to see how the game goes as it moves forward. Nexon undoubtedly has even more plans for the App Store, but this may be one title that doesn't pan out.
Update: Apparently the game's been pulled -- it's no longer on the US App Store. Maybe after the slow reception, Nexon has headed back to the drawing board

Переслать - iRig Mic: A hands-on review of a hot iOS accessory
If there's one group that has taken to the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch in a big way, it's the worldwide community of musicians. From amateurs who just want to play with making music electronically to professionals who have recorded albums on iOS devices, musicians love the way they can take advantage of the light weight, power, and music-related apps that have been developed for the iOS platforms.
IK Multimedia has come to the rescue of musicians who wish to use their iOS devices to perform and record music with a number of cool and useful software and hardware products. At Macworld Expo 2011, I had the opportunity to interview Starr Ackerman of IK Multimedia about these products including one that hadn't yet been released: the iRig Mic (US$59.99).
The iRig Mic is a high-quality handheld condenser microphone that can be used with any iOS device for audio input. Whether you're using it to record a video interview with an iPhone 4 or iPod touch, or to record vocals for your latest GarageBand song, the iRig Mic is a great asset for musicians and podcasters who want to improve their audio.

Переслать - ScanDrop comes to Mac: makes scanning to cloud services simple
I've been a fan of a paperless workflow for a couple of years now, and I rely heavily on Evernote for organizing everything scannable that crosses my desk. One of the tools I've found invaluable for speeding up the scan and filing process is ScanDrop, as it allows me to scan a document and do basic image editing. I can also send a PDF to Evernote with a name, tags, and the appropriate Notebook setup without having to juggle files between multiple applications.
Unfortunately, this has also kept my scanning leashed to Windows, since ScanDrop didn't exist for Mac OS X. I was delighted to find out that OfficeDrop has debuted a Mac OS X version on the Mac App Store at the bargain launch price of US$1.99. If you aren't an Evernote user, ScanDrop also works directly with Google Docs and OfficeDrop's own commercial cloud service, or you can scan files to any location on your drive, enabling you to sync documents to Dropbox, iDisk or similar solutions.
The only downside is ScanDrop depends on the service to do optical character recognition (OCR), so you'll need to be an Evernote Premium user, a subscriber to OfficeDrop, or put up with the limitations with Google Docs' OCR. If you're saving to your drive, you may need to find an additional tool for OCR or live without searchable text documents.
Make sure to read over the details about scanner support to make sure ScanDrop will work with your hardware before you click purchase.

Переслать - Apple airs new 'Retina' iPhone 4 commercial
Apple has released another commercial in the "If you don't have an iPhone" series of ads. This commercial, titled "Retina," shows off the Retina Display on the iPhone 4. The ad cycles through the Photos, iPod (movies), Maps, and Mail apps. The latest ad comes just one day afterApple released an iPhone 4 ad showcasing Game Center. Apple seems to release iPhone ads in groups of twos or threes, so it's likely that another one may hit the airwaves soon.

Переслать - Apple set to deploy "GM1" release of Mac OS X Lion?
Tech Crunch reports that Apple is set to deploy a Gold Master release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion in the near future. It's been just over a month since Apple released the Lion Developer Preview. A Gold Master is typically the final version of a software product that is then sent on to be mass produced on CD or DVDs (or delivered digitally). Once a software hits Gold Master, it is usually available to the general public within a matter of weeks.
However, this next release of 10.7 Lion, while designated a Gold Master, will actually be labeled "GM1" according to TechCrunch. TechCrunch says this GM1 release will be "only the initial Golden Master candidate" with more to follow. Typically non-final GM candidates are called release candidates, but this is Apple and they always uses their own special naming conventions. However, an Apple GM1 candidate means we'll typically see all the feature tweaks Apple has planned for Lion locked in place, with successive "GM" releases solely focusing on bug fixes and compatibility issues. Mac OS X 10.7 is expected to be released later this summer.
