- Apple seeking new paradigm for educating students with special needs
According to a report from AppleInsider, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) this week disclosed a recent patent application for delivering educational content to students in a classroom setting. Filed by Apple in August, 2009, under the title "External Content Transformation," the patent describes new methods for a host computer to deliver content to multiple client devices in a format that accommodates the individual needs of each user.
Apple's concept aims to help educators address the diverse learning needs of every student in their classrooms. For example, a teacher could use Apple's technology to more effectively deliver the material for a lesson. Based on individual preferences, some students may see the content in a larger font size while their classmates simultaneously receive the same lesson as synthesized speech or in Braille.
"A host device can share content with many users, without needing to do significant processing on the host device to accommodate users' needs and preferences," states Apple's patent application.Apple's patent highlights the concept's potential to address the specific needs of students with disabilities, including descriptions of new formats tailored to address the impairments of each individual user. Content would also be adjusted to suit a user's custom system settings or preferences.

Переслать - Apple's Joint Venture small business service plan launches quietly
Apple's new service for small businesses moving to Mac, Joint Venture, appears to be off the ground. The service starts at US$499 for up to five systems, although complete pricing details are not immediately visible on the web page touting Joint Venture.
So, what does Joint Venture provide for the small business that wants to buy Macs? Pretty much everything. To begin with, the Apple Store that you work with will set up all of the new Macs "usually within 24 hours." The setup includes moving data from an existing Mac or PC, and installation of any software that you purchase through Apple.
Apple also sets up a unique Joint Venture page for your company, on which you can set up training for your employees, book appointments with a Genius or Business Specialist at the store, sign up for workshops, or get tech support.
The training consists of up to three two-hour sessions, held at the Apple Store, for your employees. The classes are rather general in nature, but according to the Joint Venture web page, the staff will work with businesses to customize the training. There are also Getting Started workshops held on a regular basis that are designed to bring new employees up to speed on using Apple products.
As for tech support, Joint Venture gives business owners access to the Genius Bar via phone (or in-store visit). The service will even provide loaner machines while your computer is "in the shop."
Like Apple's alliance with OnForce, the Joint Venture program has the potential to cut into the business of Apple Consultants Network (ACN) members. For many ACNs, the initial setup of Macs at a customer site is not only a way to gain revenue, but also provide training to new employees at a firm and integrate the new Macs into an overall system design. Troubleshooting and resolution of issues at a client's location is also the bread-and-butter of many ACN members, and now that service has the potential of being sidetracked by the Joint Venture program.

Переслать - March Madness to stream to the iPad and iPhone for free
CBS, Turner Sports and the NCAA announced this week that streaming content from the March Madness basketball tournament will be made available to iOS users for free. In the past, CBS has streamed the content for free over the internet and to iPhone owners via a paid application. Last year, the iPhone March Madness On demand application cost sport fans $10. An iPad version was not available as the iPad was not yet on sale.
With the subsequent debut and explosion of the iPad, the trio of companies coordinating the March Madness broadcast have decided to extend their reach to Apple's popular tablet. They also dropped the $10 price tag and made the app available for free. The tournament will kick off March 15th and the iOS app will be made available soon (watch here for updates). I know I will be watching on my iPad, anyone going to join me?

Переслать - Talking Carl app has been "hijacked", report angry users
Talking Carl is a mildly famous iPhone app in which a vaguely anthropomorphic red blob repeats things you say to it in a funny voice and responds to touches and prods with giggles and yelps. Readers have been sending us quite angry messages about a mysterious recent update to the app which replaced the cheerful Carl with a cardboard box, but it wasn't immediately obvious exactly what had happened.
The app was originally developed as a collaboration between Yann Le Coroller, a motion designer and graphics expert, and Awyse, a software publisher. TUAW spoke with both Le Coroller and Guillaume Carre, CEO of Awyse, so we could get to the bottom of the story.

Переслать - AT&T confirms it will support personal hotspot for the iPhone
AT&T representative Seth Bloom reportedly told PhoneScoop that AT&T will offer personal hotspot when it debuts with iOS 4.3. As was suggested in earlier rumors, the hotspot feature will require customers to subscribe to the $45/4 GB DataPro Plan with tethering. AT&T was rumored to be interested in personal hotspot, but this is the first time the carrier has stated publicly it was going to offer this feature.
Verizon Wireless launched the iPhone 4 with personal hotspot in February. The hotspot provides WiFi-based internet access for up to five devices using the iPhone's mobile broadband connection. The hotspot feature on Verizon provides 2 GB of data for $20, a charge that is levied on top of the $30 unlimited smartphone data plan.
Rather than a standalone application like the mobile hotspot on Android and webOS, the iOS version is built into the operating system. The service can be toggled on/off and configured from within the settings menu. This deep integration suggests all carriers will have access to personal hotspot and can decide individually whether to offer it to their customers.
When the iOS 4.3 update rolls out to AT&T customers on March 11th, are any of our readers going to bump up their plan to take advantage of this new feature? Let us know in the comments.

Переслать - AT&T denies mass exodus to Verizon in wake of CDMA iPhone 4
There's been a fair amount of speculation about sales of Verizon-network iPhones -- how many (half a million in a day?), how many are being sold to fed-up AT&T customers (Abandon ship! Abandon ship!) -- but AT&T says it's not worried. AT&T Mobility boss Ralph de la Vega says iPhone users aren't defecting to Verizon Wireless any faster than the carrier expected. "We haven't seen any surprises, and everything is pretty much within our expectations," de la Vega stated.
However, de la Vega didn't say exactly how many customers AT&T expected to defect. Some surveys put the number of Verizon iPhones being sold to ex-AT&T customers at around 14 percent. That's a sizeable number -- perhaps 70,000 on the first day of sales alone. On the other hand, analysts at Wells Fargo have said AT&T is expected to lose only 150,000 contract customers in the first quarter of 2011, down from the 225,000 it originally projected.
So that's all right then, everyone remain calm.

Переслать - Two apps to teach spatial relationships and the alphabet to kids
Apps to teach small children letters and words have come a long way since my own kids were playing StickyBear ABC on an Apple ][+. Here are two examples: Lola's Alphabet Train (US$0.99) for the iPhone and iPod touch (it's also available for the iPad as Lola's Alphabet Train HD at $1.99) and KidzBlox ($0.99), which is a universal app. These are both simple (with Lola being harder since you need to know some words) and repetitious, which may bore the stuffing out of parents, but they seem totally appropriate for small children.
Lola's Alphabet Train
Lola's Alphabet Train (by BeiZ) features Lola the Panda, a bear who wants to buy presents for her friends. She must travel to the shops by train. The game features easy, medium or hard modes. To get the train moving, certain tasks need to be completed; some are harder than others. The simplest is a simple letter recognition task. Three letters are displayed as the name of one is spoken. The player must touch the correct letter, which is shown in a text block. Two successful trials move the train onto the next task.
A matching activity presents six letter tiles. Several tiles are displayed quickly (I would have left it on the screen for a longer time) before flipping over. There are three pairs of matching blocks on each screen, and the object is to touch the matching two, which will cause them to vanish. When you touch one, you hear the letter spoken, which is great for reinforcement. Once that task is complete, the train moves on to the spelling task.
An object is displayed and the letters need to spell its name are scattered about. The player must arrange them properly. As you touch a letter, its name is spoken, and when all the letters are in the right place, the name of the object is spoken, which moves the train to the store where you can buy one present. At the store the you'll find items like a robot, car, sheep doll, etc., all at different prices. You "pay" for items with coins collected by completing the aforementioned tasks.

Переслать - GDC 2011: Tatem Games' Carnivores and RoboSockets
Tatem Games is a mobile games studio out of Ukraine that's been making games since the mid-'90s. They originally started with PC games, CEO Igor Karev told me here at GDC 2011, but lately the company's focus has been on the iPhone and the iPad. "It's about timing," Karev says, "we can make cool games, and not spend two years on them." The company's biggest titles are the Carnivores games, a series of 3D "hunting" games (though the titles have grown to encompass more than just killing things) that started out on the PC and have since garnered 3.5 million downloads.
The Carnivores games have a dedicated user base, and Tatem closely follows customers' advice, structuring updates around iTunes comments and input. There is an update due out soon that will bring more mythical creatures into the games, as well as new weapons to use and a new game mode requested by users who don't want to kill the animals; it'll be a photo hunting mode instead, letting the player wander the world with a camera rather than a gun.

Переслать - Opera for Mac includes BitTorrent functionality
Anyone want to take bets on how long it is going to take the free Opera 11.01 web browser to get pulled from the Mac App Store?
In a post this morning at TUAW sister site DownloadSquad, blogger Lee Mathews noted that Opera is the first web browser to make it into the Mac App Store that isn't based on the Webkit core of Safari. It's also the first BitTorrent client to make it into the Mac App Store.
Apple has never been fond of the "special" uses of BitTorrent technology, particularly in the realm of distributing illegal copies of music, movies, and software. The company previously shut down an iOS app, Drivetrain, that could be used to remotely control the Transmission BitTorrent application, citing that "this category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third-party rights."
If Apple chooses to look the other way on this specific functionality of Opera for Mac, we're wondering if some of the other features -- including extension support and a built-in email client -- might hit the Mac App Store hot button. We'll be keeping our eyes on the Mac App Store to see how long Opera remains available.

Переслать - Blackberry Messenger coming to iPhone?
A rumor from BGR today suggests RIM is preparing to bring its popular BlackBerry Messenger to iOS as well as Android. Details are sparse but the Canadian handset manufacturer reportedly wants to own the messaging space and can propel itself forward by opening its popular Messenger service to other platforms. RIM is moving quickly with the Android version, but may encounter a stumbling block with Apple's App Store approval process. Nonetheless, this rumor is quite tantalizing, especially when you feast your eyes on the above screenshot that landed in our inbox recently. Interesting, no?

Переслать - iPads bought in last 2 weeks eligible for $100 refund
If you bought an iPad within the last two weeks, you're eligible for a $100 discount from Apple, according to website Electric Pig. There are two "catches," if you want to call them that.
First, you must have your receipt. Second, you must be within your 14-day return window. Fifteen days won't cut it. Those requesting the refund must visit an Apple Store. Apple sales reps say the process will take about two weeks.
There isn't a lot of time to request the discount, but it's better than nothing and the refund should please a lot of people. Good luck!

Переслать - Apple now owns FaceTime.com
Apple debuted its FaceTime video calling service when it launched the iPhone 4 in June 2010. The Cupertino company faced a potential trademark conflict with FaceTime Communications, a company that delivers a unified communications platform for enterprise businesses.
Rather than fight the company over the trademark, Apple negotiated an agreement with FaceTime Communications to obtain the rights to the name. The company recently changed its name to Actiance and transferred the trademark as well as the domain name of Facetime.com to Apple.
Though under its possession, the domain does not yet point to an Apple-created website. Interestingly enough, Apple still does not own the iPad.com domain name, though it owns a trademark for the term.

Переслать - Will you buy an iPad 2?
The dust of the announcement has settled, and the immediate effects of Steve Jobs' famous Reality Distortion Field have waned. The iPad 2 is almost here: get used to it. Predictably, crackpots and pundits have had their say, and just as with the original iPad, not everyone is thrilled with Apple's latest device. And just like the original iPad, the crackpots and pundits are wrong, wrong, wrong-o wrong. This thing will sell in the millions. The tens of millions.
The question is, are you getting one?
I can't answer for you, but I can answer for me: the iPad 2 addresses almost every gripe that kept me from buying the original iPad, so just try to stop me from buying one. Back in December, I asked you what you wanted from the iPad 2, and I presented my own wish list as well; Apple hit four out of six of my wish list items. As someone once said, two out of three ain't bad. Unfortunately, the one feature readers wanted most from the iPad, an increase in display resolution, didn't make the cut this time around. I suspect a fair number of those readers might hold off until the iPad 3.
I won't be waiting any longer. Despite the same 1024x768 display resolution as the original iPad, and despite the top capacity still topping out at 64 GB (a complaint that's at least partially mitigated by iTunes Home Sharing in iOS 4.3), I'm taking the express train to iPadia as soon as Apple pulls it into the station.
When the iPad was first announced last year, I didn't think there was enough of a gap between the iPhone and the Mac to justify its existence. But after getting an iPhone 4, a far faster and more capable device than my iPhone 3G, I noticed a couple of things. First, I noticed that I was using my iPhone for a lot of the stuff I used to do exclusively on my Mac. Second, I found the only truly restrictive aspect of the iPhone 4 was its small screen. "Gee," I thought, "if only Apple made a product that was a bigger version of the iPho- OH, HEY."
I'll be one of the legions of "Kool-Aid drinking fanboys" ready to buy an iPad 2, and I'll do it with a smile (followed by a wince when my credit card statement arrives). How about you? Are you joining the iPad ranks for the first time, upgrading from the original iPad, waiting for the iPad 3 with Retina Display/antimatter fuel cells/built-in Cuisinart, or just waiting for this touchscreen "fad" to blow over? Let us know in the poll below.

Переслать - Quick tip: AirPlay with unsupported apps
Back in January, we reported that Apple had begun approving third-party apps that support AirPlay, Apple's new wireless audio streaming protocol for listening to iPhone or iPad music over a speaker system hooked up to a compatible Apple networked device, such as an Apple TV or an Airport Express.
But few applications so far have released updates to take advantage of that capability. However, you can easily trick your iDevice to stream audio from an unsupported application to your stereo.
All you have to do is go into your iPod app, start a song and choose your AirPlay speakers. Then return to your home screen and boot up the app that has the audio you want to hear. Your iDevice should automatically switch audio source from iPod to the app, because most apps, when booted, retain the current state for audio output, which in this case is AirPlay.
Bingo. AirPlay on apps like Hulu, or Pandora! Note that this only supports audio, not video. Apple has also announced some updates to AirPlay in iOS 4.3, coming next week.

Переслать - Due: A simple, beautiful, wonderful reminder app for iOS devices
Perhaps the most important of the distinguishing factors of the App Store and iOS development is the insanely high quality of apps. Not all apps -- not by a long shot -- but the ones that are made with care and attention are truly wonders of form and function wrapped in a gorgeous shell. Due is one of those apps. It takes the mundane task of setting a quick reminder and makes it easier than using a calendar app and more, dare I say it, fun than it should be. No tricks, just good solid design and all the functions you need within easy reach.
Functionality
Make no mistake, Due is just a to-do list with timers, so if you're looking for something else, Due isn't for you. But if you ever used Diddlebug on the ancient Palm OS, this is as close as I've found (with Diddlebug you drew on the screen and added a timer). Why there's no iOS version of Diddlebug is beyond me, even a crappy 8-bit version would suffice. At any rate, Due allows you to create a timed reminder with a default notification and chime within about 4 or 5 taps, depending on some options. Four if you accept the default timed "on the next quarter hour." You can adjust the default time interval in the app's settings, from 1 minute to 30.
Reminders, once created, go in a queue. Tapping on a reminder allows you to set whether or not snoozing is allowed, if you want a reminder to repeat, chime options and if you want to reschedule this for 10 minutes, 1 hour or 1 day later. All of that in a submenu, and it's quite intuitive to boot. Swiping a reminder allows you to delete it.
An example of the app's lovely attention to detail: when you go to set a reminder, there are four "default time" buttons which correspond to when you wake up, what time you eat lunch, when you leave work and just before bedtime.

Переслать - Best Buy, Sams Club and Wal-Mart to carry the iPad 2 at launch
When the iPad 2 makes its retail debut on March 11th, customers will have a variety of retail outlets from which to purchase Apple's latest generation tablet device. In addition to online and brick and mortar Apple Stores, the iPad 2 will also be available from Best Buy and possibly Wal-Mart and Sam's Club.
If you remember from last year, several big box retailers signed on with Apple to distribute the Cupertino company's popular iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Besides Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, you also have Target and wireless carriers Verizon and AT&T with the iPad lining their shelves. Keep an eye on these retailers to see if their signage switches from the iPad to the iPad 2 in the upcoming week.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Sky Combat
I can't say that I'd call a top-down arcade shooter the best fit for the iPhone's touchscreen, but in the case of Chillingo's Sky Combat, it works. You drag a finger around the screen, guiding an auto-firing chopper through quite a few different maps of various forces, attacking and defending from rockets and constantly grabbing upgrades and score. The graphics are 2D, but it looks great, with plenty of fiery explosions to go along with the realistic vehicles.
With a full campaign of ten missions, a single mission mode, an endless mode, three difficulty levels to play with and full Crystal and OpenFeint integration, Sky Combat is packed to the gills with extra features. There's a 1.1 update on the way, and there are a total of four different control schemes, so however you want to play it, you can. It's an excellent game, a more than respectable scrolling shooter for the iPhone and a bargain at just US$0.99.
Chillingo has made a reputation for providing great games like this, and I got to see a few more of their upcoming titles at GDC this week. Stay tuned for a preview of those, as well as an interview with the company's executives.

Переслать - AnandTech research shows Verizon iPhone 4 'death grip' reports are overblown
Consumer Reports tested the Verizon iPhone 4 using the same methodology as the original GSM version, and with the same results: signal strength drops if the iPhone 4 is gripped in a certain fashion, commonly known as the "death grip." As a result of its testing, Consumer Reports decided it couldn't recommend the Verizon iPhone 4, either.
Similar testing done by AnandTech throws some cold water on Consumer Reports' findings, however. Not long after the Verizon iPhone 4's launch, AnandTech found the Verizon iPhone 4's "death grip is essentially mitigated."
The Verizon iPhone 4 experienced a signal loss of 16.5 decibels (dB) when held in "death grip," compared to signal loss of 15.5 dB when held "naturally." This is far better performance than the GSM iPhone, which experienced signal loss of 24.6 dB in "death grip" and 19.8 dB in "natural grip." In other words, the Verizon iPhone 4 in "death grip" mode experiences less signal degradation than a GSM iPhone 4 held "naturally."

Everyone following the iPad 2 announcement is aware of the new Smart Covers for the iPad 2. These flap-like covers attach to the iPad using a magnet and have an accordion-style look. The covers, amusingly enough, also resemble a style of Japanese bath tub lids! The resemblance is so uncanny that the unveiling of these new cases caused a flurry of bath tub lid comments among Japanese Apple fans (our Rick Martin points to Asiajin's note that the caption above translates as 'Completely Identical,' a common Japanese web meme similar to the English 'Separated at Birth'). Makes you wonder how many unsuspecting Westerners will be the target of quiet snickering when they whip out their Smart Cover-adorned iPad 2 the next time they are in Tokyo.

Переслать - Firemint announces Real Racing 2 HD, enhanced graphics for iPad 2
Expect to see a rash of new and/or improved games for the shiny new iPad 2 in the near future. One of the first publishers out of the gate is Firemint, announcing enhanced graphics for Real Racing 2 HD.
Firemint says that although it had no detailed advance knowledge of exactly what iPad 2 would bring, the actual announcement has turned out to suit what they've been developing very well, i.e., gyroscopic controls, faster graphics and a lighter form factor that will be easier on gamers' hands when holding the device.
"Real Racing 2 HD has been significantly enhanced beyond what could work on existing devices, and our efforts have definitely given us a head start on iPad 2," Firemint says. "All these attributes combined with our enhancements to Real Racing 2 HD will create the most precise and intuitive car racing experience on any device. The 1080p HDMI output also opens up some great possibilities." Sounds like those enhanced graphics are going to be really enhanced.

Переслать - Apple awarded patents for virtual keyboard, Pages and more
According to Patently Apple, the US Patent and Trademark Office has just published 23 new patents granted to Apple, including one regarding virtual keyboards and another for Pages, part of Apple's iWork suite. Apple filed a patent application for a virtual keyboard just two months before the original iPhone's launch. It covers a method of operating a touchscreen to activate one of a number of virtual keys, allowing the device to work out which key you meant to touch even though your finger may not actually be on it.
The Pages patent deals with the process it has to go through to convert files from other programs, like Microsoft's Word, Excel or PowerPoint or PDF files, which turns out to be much more complicated than you'd think.
The other patents cover a number of products, from a world travel kit power adapter and technical details of the DisplayPort adapter to editing blocks of a web page in an email program and multimedia data transfer.

Переслать - What was MIA from the big iPad announcements today?
Pretty exciting stuff at the Yerba Buena Center. From where I sit, the new iPad is a substantial, but not groundbreaking upgrade. I do think it has created some unpleasant drama for the Android and unshipped BlackBerry tablets.
On the other hand, life is not all about fawning over every move Apple makes (despite what it feels like some days). As I step outside the Reality Distortion Field, there were some things I wanted to see Apple include.
More storage: We've seen the iPhone storage increase over time while prices stayed the same. The iPad is sitting at the same configurations at the same price. It would have been nice to see the 16 GB iPad dropped, with the 32 GB at the lower price point.
Screen: I didn't expect the screen resolution to increase. That would have jacked the price up, and Apple surely didn't want to do that..., but a non-glare screen option would have been awfully nice. Using the iPad outside or in a room with a lot of windows is no picnic.

Переслать - Apple's new Digital AV Adapter: what it will and won't do
Apple introduced the iPad 2 today and along with it rolled out a few new accessories to accompany its new tablet. One new cable to hit the retail shelves is the Digital AV adapter, which can be used to pipe content from your iOS device to your TV. Not just iPad 2-specific, the adapter is compatible with the iPhone 4, the original iPad and the 4th generation iPod touch (although it is somewhat limited on those devices, see below).
One side of the adapter plugs into the 30-pin connector on your iOS device while the other connects to an HDMI cable attached to your HDTV. Right next to the HDMI plug is a second 30-pin connector that lets you charge your iOS device while you are connected to your TV. When you purchase the adapter, don't forget to have a spare HDMI cable as the adapter is packaged alone in its box.
Before you grab one of these adapters, take note that there is a major difference in functionality between the iPad 2 and the older iOS devices. The iPad 2 is the only device that supports mirroring and 1080p HD. With the second generation tablet, you can send your apps, presentations, websites and more to your HDTV in full HD. The only exception is movies, which are streamed at 720p. The iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th gen and iPad will only push over 720p-quality slideshows and movies. The adapter will also send over digital audio to TVs that support this feature.
The Digital AV adapter will be available for US$40 from the Apple online store and in Apple retail stores when the iPad 2 becomes available on March 11.

Переслать - Apple, Microsoft still sparring over "App Store" trademark
Earlier this year, Microsoft filed a complaint with the Patent and Trademark office against Apple over the Cupertino company's attempt to trademark the term "App Store." Microsoft objected to this patent on the grounds that "App Store" was a generic term. Apple responded to this complaint in full force stating in one section of its rebuttal,
Yet, Microsoft, missing the forest for the trees, does not base its motion on a comprehensive evaluation of how the relevant public understands the term APP STORE as a whole. What it offers instead are out-of-context and misleading snippets of material printed by its outside counsel from the internet and allegations regarding how the public allegedly interprets the constituent parts of the term APP STORE, i.e., 'app' and 'store.'"
Apple also points out the irony of this complaint as Microsoft holds a trademark for the word Windows, which should be considered a part of a building, not a term owned by Microsoft. The USPTO has not commented on these filings, nor given a date when it will make a decision regarding the App Store trademark. Though it may seem like a silly spat, the term App Store is thrown around loosely by a variety of companies, a situation that would change dramatically if Apple is granted this trademark.

Переслать - Original iPad reduced to $399/$349 refurb
Apple is clearing out original iPad inventory, starting at just $399 for a new unit or $349 for a refurb. If you have a mom, a grandfather, kids, whatever, seriously, what are you waiting for? No matter how amazing the iPad 2 is (and it's lovely, really it is), this is an insanely good price for a device that's wickedly wonderful. From reading to games to email to browsing, the old iPad isn't going to stop being useful any time soon.
Buy one soon, before channels clear out, and before I give into the urge to pick up a few myself -- a move that would thrill my children and imperil my marriage.
I personally own the 16 GB Wi-Fi unit and have never found the lack of onboard storage to be an issue, especially with great apps like Air Video and LogMeIn out there to help connect my iPad to movies and resources from back on my Mac.

Переслать - iOS 4.3 announced, different features for different devices
Today at the live event, which our own Medical Leave Steve showed up to host, we got a peek at the pending version of iOS 4.3. This will be out on March 11, along with the next generation iPad, also announced at today's event. At first glance, the important differences depend on which iThing you're actually running it on.
First and foremost to iPad owners is the following: a rollback of the switch function! Now you will get the option of what that little flippy switch controls: orientation lock or mute.
There is also a marked improvement in iOS 4.3 if you have a GSM iPhone: Personal Hotspots are now an option! There's no question there will be a charge for this, but at least it will appear sooner than later. Now for the things that are improvements for all devices that will run iOS 4.3: AirPlay will now let you stream from your photo library as a slide show, from App Store apps, and even websites.
Also for everyone is a notable update to Safari. Now the Nitro JavaScript engine will power Safari, making mobile web surfing a little perkier as well.
NOTE: This update is for iPad, iPod touch gens 3 and 4, and ONLY the GSM iPhone. Those shiny new Verizon iPhones will just have to wait.

The iPad 2 will be available starting March 11, and there are no pre-orders.

Переслать - iPad 2 cameras set for FaceTime
Now that the new iPad is confirmed to have both a front- and a rear-facing camera, the iPad joins the iPhone, iPod touch and Mac as a FaceTime-capable device.
The new iPad front-facing camera features VGA quality video at 30 frames per second, which is the main camera people will use during FaceTime chats, but presumably the iPad 2 FaceTime program, like the iPhone 4 FaceTime, will support camera rotation. The rear camera on the iPad features HD-quality video at 720p resolution.
No word on whether a Windows version of desktop FaceTime is in the works.

Переслать - Apple will update iMovie app to support iPad
It's no surprise with the new cameras on the iPad that Apple has also introduced a version of iMovie tailored to the iPad, but is a universal update that includes the iPhone.
Features include a precision editor, multitrack audio recording with more than 50 sound effects, new themes, the use of AirPlay to stream to the Apple TV, sharing HDs and the ability to upload to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and CNN iReport from the app, in addition to a send to iTunes button.
The iMovie app is $4.99. The update to support the iPad will be available on March 11, but those with the iPhone can download the current version of the app now.

Переслать - Apple announces GarageBand for iPad
Earlier today, Apple announced GarageBand for the iPad (US$4.99). Available March 11, this app puts the power of audio recording and editing on the sleek, portable iPad. Features include touch instruments, guitar and amp effects (you can plug your guitar in for live recording), 8-track recording and mixing and more than 250 loops. Plus, you can email an AAC version of your song and even share projects with GarageBand for Mac.
You say you're not the most talented musician in the world? No worries. The app's "Smart Guitar" will keep you in tune by suggesting chords and even "strumming" the strings for you.
When I think of what I paid for a junky 4-track recorder in high school, one that was a glorified cassette deck, and compare it to this thing, I'm floored.
Apple announced the iPad 2 in a press event earlier today. You can catch our live coverage here.

Переслать - Apple announces Smart Covers for iPad
After the lackluster reception to the original Apple iPad case, a new product called Smart Covers was introduced alongside the iPad 2 today.
The case will come in five colors in both polyurethane and leather -- the poly costing $39 and the leather $69. The cover is more like a cover flap that leaves the back of the iPad exposed. It's held on by magnets, which are said to help auto-align the cover with the iPad. It has a microfiber lining that will clean the screen.
The cover will wake the iPad when you peel it back, and put it back to sleep when you close it.

Переслать - Apple announces iPad 2 in 2 colors, will feature dual cameras and A5 chip
After much fanfare, Apple officially announced the iPad 2 today with a new dual-core processor called the A5 and both rear and front-facing cameras. It is up to two times faster than the A4 chip and nine times faster graphics with the same amount of power consumption. The iPad 2 also has the gyroscope found in the iPhone 4 and the current-generation iPod touch.
The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than the current model and weighs 1.3 pounds. It's even thinner than the iPhone 4; the iPhone 4 is 9.3 mm thick while the iPad 2 is 8.8 mm thick. It will be available in both white and black, with the white model available on day one (avoiding the fiasco that surrounded the while iPhone 4). There will be models that work with both AT&T and Verizon. The iPad 2 will also have HDMI mirrored video output up to 1080p through a $39 accessory.
The price on the iPad 2 is the exact same pricing model as used for the original iPads starting out at $499 for a 16 GB Wi-Fi only version and topping out at $829 for a 64 GB model with both Wi-Fi and 3G.
The iPad 2 will ship on March 11.
Edit: Apple has updated its iPad page with the technical specs for the device. The back camera will support 720p HD video recording with up to 30 frames per second with audio and a 5x digital zoom still camera.
The front camera will also have video recording, but is VGA and a VGA-quality still camera -- most likely the same one found in the iPod touch.
