- The iPad 2 video Apple doesn't want you to seeYouTuber ooLDE has made another of his banned videos -- the videos that Apple doesn't want you to see. Previously he made one for the iPhone 4 and the original iPad introduction. This one is a parody of the iPad 2 introduction video. I thought it was pretty funny, especially since it features Apple's only black and female employees. Make sure you watch it to the end.

Переслать - My top 3 apps: Tom Merritt
Tom Merritt knows his apps. As anchor of Tech News Today for the TWiT network, he sees his fair share of great tech. We caught up with Tom back in January at CES and asked his "top" 3 apps -- they happened to be the ones he uses the most.
Apps discussed:

Переслать - International travelers are best off with the AT&T iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G
With the iPad 2, many people are sure to be excited that Apple is offering both AT&T and Verizon versions of the iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G. After all, many out there bemoan the less than desirable 3G service offered by AT&T, so it's nice that those people can buy an iPad 2 which allows them to opt for Verizon's 3G service. However, if you are a frequent international traveler like me, you'll want to make sure you buy the AT&T version of the iPad 2.
While you can buy any iPad 2 and use it on Wi-Fi networks when you land in a specific country, you won't be able to buy a data plan in most countries if you have the Verizon iPad 2. The reason for this is simple: the AT&T iPad 2 features a GSM chipset, which is the near-universal global standard. The Verizon iPad 2 3G uses a CDMA chipset, which, globally, is nowhere near as universal as GSM.
Of course, I'm assuming that you travel to most places I do, like Europe, Russia, Asia, and South America. If you are going to be traveling to Canada or Mexico a lot, the Verizon iPad 2 will work just fine for you since both those countries have wide CDMA networks. However, for most other parts of the world you're better off going with the AT&T iPad 2. When I leave the US with my AT&T iPad 2 and land in the UK, I can whip out my iPad and buy a 30-day subscription using one of Apple's data partners in the UK. If I had a Verizon iPad 2, on the other hand, I'd be out of luck for 3G data service while in the UK. Just something to think about before you let your frustration at AT&T's service push you into the open arms of the Verizon iPad 2.
Click these links for a full list of GSM and CDMA countries.
NOTE: I've called two different Apple stores asking them if the iPad 2 3G model will be unlocked. The first store's representative said "Yes, absolutely. Just insert a foreign carrier's SIM when you arrive in the country and you'll be able to buy local 3G service." The second store's representative said, "I don't think they'll be unlocked." However, even if the iPad 2 is shipping locked, it is easy to unlock it and if you are an international traveler, you are still going to want to go with the AT&T iPad 2 because you'll be able to use it on any GSM network. An unlocked Verizon iPad 2 will not be able to access 3G data networks in most countries because it uses a CDMA chipset.

Переслать - WiebeTech RTX220-QR RAID: SSD speeds at HD prices
If you're looking for a 2-bay RAID setup for doing either mirrored (RAID 1) or striped (RAID 0) storage or backup, what do you want? Something pretty and shiny, or something that looks like it can withstand a direct attack by a squad of Marines who are having a bad day?
My guess is that you'll want the latter, and the WiebeTech RTX220-QR fits the bill perfectly. It comes in an black aluminum enclosure with a sturdy handle on top, and could easily be mistaken for a car battery charger instead of a RAID array. Inside the black box are two shock-absorbing TrayFree drive bays; these are SATA (1 and 2) bays that you simply insert a drive into and close the door. The drive clicks into place, and you're ready to roll.
I had an opportunity to try out an RTX220-QR for a few days, and what I found was a solid, fast, and incredibly configurable array. Read more to find out what I liked (or not) about this WiebeTech device.

Переслать - GDC 2011: Graeme Devine on the iPad for gaming
Veteran game developer Graeme Devine took the stage at GDC 2011 this week to talk about Apple's iPad (and by extension, the new iPad 2, of course), and called it "the best gaming machine on the planet today." He went through his own thoughts on the device, talked a little bit about how developers could use the metaphor of touch to make the best games possible, and then went through a list of what he felt were the best practices for iOS development.
Devine said that the first time he held an iPad, "I felt like I was holding something from science fiction in my hands. It was different from any other experience I've had before." The iPad reverses the trend in gaming to move the screen farther away from the player, and instead puts it relatively close up and personal. Additionally, the joystick is gone, and while a lot of games depend on that virtual joystick (more on that in a bit), the iPad removes any hardware between your fingers and what's happening on screen. A finger isn't a mouse, either -- rather than selecting and then clicking, fingers on iPad screens just tap and move.

Переслать - Paperless: A solid, easily customizable document manager for OS X
There are several bloggers here at TUAW who are slowly moving toward a paperless office. Steve Sande has had the best success, sharing some of what he's learned about culling out the piles of paper in his freelance business.
However, it doesn't stop reams of paper from entering your life, or to even begin to manage it. Paperless from Mariner Software, formerly known as ReceiptWallet, aims to pull all of the paper pieces of your digital life into one location, then encourages you to keep going by adding to it by creating separate databases within the program to sort out different parts of your life -- a digital file cabinet, so to speak. Paperless works with almost any scanner and even offers a few bundled packages with Fujitsu's ScanSnap scanners that include a boxed version of Paperless. Yes, the irony of including a boxed version of a software designed to make your life paperless isn't lost on us.
The folks at Mariner were good enough to let us dive into the software.

Переслать - Engadget reviews MacBook Pro 2011 edition
If you're hungering for more hands-on detail on Apple's newest laptops, head over to our sister site Engadget where Nilay Patel and Joanna Stern have put the 15" model through its paces in a full review. Not to keep you in suspense: "the new MacBook Pro is the fastest laptop we've ever tested, hands-down." Nice.
While the review gives high marks for performance, it does ding Apple for not revving up the connectivity specs of the laptop or the industrial design (an extra USB port would be nice, as would a standard offer of the higher-resolution display). That said, a machine that is twice as fast as the model it replaces while keeping to the same price points is definitely a good buy.
I had the opportunity to see an SSD-equipped version of the new 15" MBP in action this evening, and it booted to the login screen from a cold start in what seemed to be less than five seconds -- so fast I almost didn't see it happen. The proud owner of the new laptop fired up Xcode and went on to compile a 35MB commercial Mac application in about 67 seconds, when the previous MBP crunched through the same job in about four and a half minutes. Not too shabby.
