  • iPad 2: Where and when you can buy one

If you're in the market for an iPad 2, you'll have a wide range of locations in the United States where you can pick one up on Friday. You'll just need to wait until 5 PM local time to do so.

At this time, we've received confirmation that the following locations will have iPad 2 stock available for purchase:

Oddly enough, there is no mention of the iPad 2 on the AT&T Wireless website, although the stores will be selling the device.

What if you're not in the U.S.? Many other countries will get the iPad 2 in just two weeks, on March 25th. Those countries are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

TUAW will have additional information about carriers and retailers in these countries as March 25th gets closer.

  • No Comment: Viewsonic ViewPad 10 press image shows a familiar OS

Good work, Viewsonic; you're now shipping the dual-boot 10" ViewPad tablet that features both Windows 7 and Android as OS choices. We at TUAW wish you every success with the product.

You may, however, want to consider having a stern chat with the design team that's working on product photography. As pointed out by Erik Schwiebert, the "ViewPad 10 Front Hand" image you're sharing with press seems to have fallen through a dimensional portal. How else to explain the fact that it's running PowerPoint for Mac?

Sad to say, but just because a tablet is dual-boot that doesn't mean it will run Mac OS X -- at least, not without a lot of extra help. Nothing like a classic Photoshop foul to merit our Shrove Tuesday honorable mention for No Comment.

  • Adobe releases Wallaby, experimental Flash to HTML 5 conversion tool

Adobe announced the release of Wallaby, an experimental tool designed to convert FLA files to HTML 5. This initial version of Wallaby is meant to convert animated Flash banners to HTML 5-compliant code. This output is optimized for viewing by WebKit-based browsers, including those on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Since it is designed for banners, the first iteration of Wallaby is limited and will not convert ActionScript, movies or sound.

The tool converts the Flash file to an HTML File, a CSS file, a JavaScript file and an asset folder that contains SVG and image content. The exported content has been tested on and is compatible with iOS 4.2. If you are not happy with the output, these files can be tweaked with a text or image editor if needed. If you are a Flash developer and want to give Wallaby a try, point your browser to Adobe Labs' website and grab the Wallaby application. It is a 32-bit Adobe Air application and is available for Mac OS X 10.5/10.6 and Windows XP/Vista/7.

  • Seventh Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta seeded to developers
Wow. It seems like only two weeks ago that the sixth beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 was seeded to developers. Wait - it WAS two weeks ago. Well, today Apple has released the seventh (and hopefully final) beta of the next version of Snow Leopard to developers.

According to Mac developers we've talked with and a report on AppleInsider, build 10J868 has no known issues, but Apple is requesting that they focus on Safari, the Mac App Store, AirPort, Bonjour, SMB, and graphics drivers.

Mac OS X 10.6.7 is widely expected to be the last available version of Snow Leopard, now that Apple has released an early beta of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion to developers. No major feature changes are expected with 10.6.7, unlike Mac OS X 10.6.6 which added the Mac App Store to the operating system.

The release of Mac OS X 10.6.7 is expected by many bloggers to come within the next week, although its availability might be slowed by the impending release of iOS 4.3 and the iPad 2.

  • Best Buy denies it is providing employees with iPads

Best Buy is not planning on distributing iPads to its employees, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Though iPads are not being given out like candy, the electronics retailer did confirm it is using a variety of devices as part of its "Connected Store" pilot program. Several select retail stores are participating in this program and are testing the Apple iPad, the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The program is designed to equip sales associated with a limited number of handheld devices used to help customers evaluate a product and make a purchase decision. Best Buy would also like to make it easier for customers to get hands-on time with these new gadgets and latest technologies. The company is still assessing the utility of this program and has not made a final decision on whether to expand it beyond this limited test run.

  • Ultimate Dinopedia brings dinosaurs to life on your iPad

The Ultimate Dinopedia (US$5.99) from National Geographic is a wonderful reference app that will quickly become the go-to source for kids who want to find out everything about dinosaurs. There are other dinosaur apps in the store, but this is by far the most complete and expansive. It started as a hardcover book last year and has since been turned into a terrific iPad app for kids four and older.

The app is broken down into three parts: Discovering Dinosaurs, Meat Eaters and Plant Eaters. It's chock full of paintings of many dinosaurs by Franco Tempsesta, and the text was written by "Dino" Don Lessem, just as in the book. (Don even has a dinosaur named after him.)

The app covers about 700 dinosaurs. Each dinosaur comes with a button to play a sound of the correct pronunciation of its name, plus much more information. For many dinosaurs, that's all you get, but others have full-page paintings, Dino Stats (which give you info from the overview page) and a paragraph on the story of the dinosaur, which you can either read yourself or have read to you in a slightly sinister sounding narration paired with nice sound effects. Each of these pages have Fun Facts like "Riojasaurus had only five teeth in the front of its top jaw and 24 more behind them. So chances are it gulped down its food and digested plants in its stomach." There's also Picture Info, such as "Riojasaurus fed in the southern forests of Pangea, the single landmark that stretched across the middle of the earth". Along with this, there are 13 very short CGI videos showing a number of dinosaurs in action. The videos certainly aren't up to the quality of Pixar, but they get the job done. The videos are the only part of the app that works in landscape mode.

  • Rumor: iOS 4.3 today at 10 AM PT, including WiFi hotspot

A rumor fresh out of BGR claims that iOS 4.3 may debut today at 10 AM Pacific Time. This release date is earlier than the March 11 date suggested last week when the gold master version of the mobile operating system was released to developers.

BGR also claims the widely-reported three device WiFi limit of the personal hotspot feature is incorrect. According to anonymous sources, the carrier determines the limit of personal hotspot connections and can allow five devices to connect if it so chooses. That's in direct contradiction to Apple's iOS 4.3 page, however, which says that the feature supports only three devices via WiFi plus an extra two devices via USB and Bluetooth respectively. It's possible that BGR's sources got the five-device number without realizing that Apple is counting Bluetooth and USB separately from the three-device WiFi limit.

[Interestingly, Verizon's version of the personal hotspot feature is listed as supporting five WiFi devices, full stop. That does lend some traction to the BGR five-device concept, but remember that VZW iPhones aren't running 4.3 and won't be for a while yet. -Ed.]

We can't confirm the validity of the iOS release time, so take it with a grain of salt. On the bright side, we shall know in a mere few hours if this is the real deal or merely a false alarm.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Cogs

Cogs is a 3D puzzle game that was originally released on iOS over a year ago, but it has just arrived on the Mac App Store. It's a good one, featuring a completely "mechanical" interface and sliding tile puzzles that build various contraptions of varying difficulty. The app is US$4.99 on the Mac App Store, but it's even cheaper on iOS; it's completely free on the iPhone right now, and it's $2.99 on the iPad as Cogs HD.

Unfortunately, even at those prices, the Mac App Store version is probably your best bet, as it comes with all 50+ levels unlocked and ready for play, while the iOS versions require separate level pack in-app purchases to get access to everything. Still, the free version comes with 10 levels anyway, so if you just want to test out the gameplay, you can. Unfortunately, there's no Game Center integration at all (the app was originally released before that), but maybe now that the Mac version is live, we'll see an update in the future. Whatever happens, if you haven't played this one before, it's definitely worth a look today.

  • GDC 2011: Firemint's Agent Squeek

Australia's Firemint is perhaps one of the most popular developers on the iPhone. Firemint's games, Flight Control, Real Racing and Real Racing 2, can be found in any Apple Store, and likely on most iPhones, too. The company's founder, Rob Murry, and his new acquisition, Infinite Interactive's Steve Faulkner, were in San Francisco last week to show off the third original IP that Firemint is creating for iOS, another line drawing game called Agent Squeek.

In Agent Squeek, you control a mouse on the screen by drawing a line for him to follow, and the goal of each level is to collect various cheeses while trying to avoid hungry cats. But while the game starts out easy, the complexity quickly ramps up, and you can do things like psyche cats into chasing you before dodging the other way, or you can even build gadgets from blueprints that you find.

  • GDC 2011: Remedy brings Death Rally to iOS

Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment is known for making full-fledged console titles like Max Payne and Alan Wake, but it's stepping into the iOS arena with a touch-based remake of its old racing combat game Death Rally, originally released back in 1996. I got to see the game in action at GDC in San Francisco last week, and I liked it a lot. While it does make use of a virtual joystick (something that Graeme Devine had railed at in his panel earlier in the day), this one's done very well, providing both direction and acceleration to your little car as you race around the game's various tracks.

Remedy worked with developer Mountain Sheep (makers of Minigore) on this one, and the polish and experience on the platform shows. The textures are clear and bright, and the gameplay is very solid. There are five cars to start (with possibly more coming later), and each of them handles differently, from a huge van down to a muscle car. The weapons are also very different, and all of them are upgradeable. Spending money earned after every race can be used to improve your car's stats or push your weapons up to the next level. As you race, you also unlock various challenges, like racing against just one opponent or going around a reversed track, that mix up the gameplay.

  • GDC 2011: NimbleBit on Pocket Frogs and Tiny Tower

I've been a fan of twin brothers Ian and David Marsh and their iOS games company NimbleBit for quite a while now, so I was glad to finally meet them in person at GDC last week. The brothers Marsh sat down to chat with me about how the company came about, what they thought of the response to Pocket Frogs, and the game they're working on next.

Before NimbleBit was formed, both brothers worked for a "traditional cell phone game development company," but when the iPhone arrived, they figured it was a chance to do something for themselves. Ian started on the company first, and David eventually joined him later on. The brothers have learned a lot over their various iOS releases, and one of the biggest lessons so far is that free is almost always the way to go. "A bigger audience is always better no matter what," I was told. Scoops was one of their first big releases, originally selling for $1 to $2, but when they switched it to free with an in-app purchase, it saw "ten times more downloads than it ever did paid."

  • Game developers looking at iPad 2's speedier A5

The iPad 2's Apple A5 processor may not be listed as faster than the existing A4 -- it's running at the same 1 GHz speed -- but the dual core architecture will be able to accomplish a lot more number crunching while still providing great battery life. Now game developers are getting excited about the possibilities for the new processor.

MacNN is reporting that Unity's Chief Creative Officer, Nicholas Francis, has said that his company will use the A5 to "really fine tune and really optimize it to run fantastic on the iPad." The Unity game engine already runs on multi-core processors like the A5, and now Unity developers can start adding effects to iOS games that previously took a dedicated gaming console or powerful PC. Francis noted that some upgrades could include real-time shadows and shafts of light, effects not previously available on the iPad.

Infinity Blade developer Epic Games comments that their gaming engine -- Unreal Engine 3 -- can already take advantage of the iPad 2's A5 dual-core processor. When PC games are moved to a more powerful PC with multiple cores, "you can ... turn up all the dials in your game to get more details, more textures, more shaders," says Epic's Mark Rein. He also noted that more CPUs brings up the possibility of more complicated physics or more enemies on the screen at once, or perhaps expanding the view of an environment.

Firemint, developers of Real Racing HD, anticipates that the next version of the game will take advantage of another new feature of the iPad 2 as well -- the built-in gyroscope. The company is hoping that they'll be able to improve steering through use of the gyro, as well as kick the graphics of the racing game up a notch.

There is a potential downside for developers: unless apps are coded to take best advantage of the hardware that they're running on, the new apps might need to be marketed for a specific iPad version or they might run slower on the original iPad. From the comments made by these top iOS game developers, it's apparent that they're doing their best to give all iPad users the best possible gaming experience.

  • Canadian carriers Bell, Telus say they're working on iPad 2 data plans

Electronista reports that Canadian carriers Bell and Telus have notified their customers that iPad 2 data plans will be coming within the next few weeks. Another Canadian carrier, Rogers, will keep existing iPad data plans in place for its customers going forward. There's no word on just exactly what the Bell and Telus plans will look like, but details on how they work are supposed to be released soon.

The iPad 2 will be launched in Canada on March 25, two weeks after the US release. And no, there will not be any carrier locks -- looks like Canadian customers will have plenty of data plans to choose from.

  • Study finds AT&T iPhone downloads twice as fast as Verizon's

We reported this morning on Verizon's iPad data rates crushing AT&T's, but if you're looking for raw download speed instead of cost savings, it might be worth checking out AT&T.

Network World reported that studies from Metrico Wireless in five US cities showed that the iPhone 4 downloaded at twice as fast a rate on AT&T than Verizon. The AT&T phone had faster download speeds while moving, but the Verizon iPhone had the better upload speed when the phone was stationary.

For those following this since the Verizon iPhone's release, this is nothing new. A TUAW hands-on last month showed slower data for the Verizon iPhone in Los Angeles. Considering that CDMA is an older technology to begin with, the result of the survey is really no surprise. It is worth noting, however, if you're considering an iPad 2, since the Verizon models will also be CDMA.

  • Apogee's Jam connects your guitar to your iPad

Apogee Jam guitar interfaceWe've seen the iRig and the AmpKit, two interfaces for getting a line-in from your guitar or bass. Both come with effect racks and sound pretty darn good. But where do you go from there? How about a dock interface that records 44.1 kHz, 24-bit audio without line noise? Apogee's Jam guitar interface does just that, and it throws in hardware gain control and LED peak monitoring. It plugs into your Mac, too!

I saw something similar at Macworld, though I don't think it was this particular model. I sat down and played an acoustic with pickups through my iPhone, though, and I was blown away by the clarity of the audio. The dock connector is, in my newly-formed opinion, the way to go. The problem at the time was that it didn't come with any effects, and the convenience of the AmpliTube and AmpKit setups was more convincing to my limited budget. However, with Apple's announcement of GarageBand on the iPad, the tables have turned.

GarageBand's full set of effects, combined with a crisp guitar input, plus editing and multi-track capabilities (all with the polish of an Apple product) make this an amazing prospect. I'm sure I'll be picking one up, as they'll be retailing at US$99 and will be available later this month. See the Jam page at Apogee's site for more info.

  • Apple may drop peripherals and some games from its retail stores

source: wikimedia commonsAccording to The Loop, quoting sources inside Apple, Apple Stores will be clearing out over 30 boxed games and some hardware items from retail shelves soon. The changes are the result of Apple wanting more room to help customers set up their new purchases, get email up and running, and basically familiarize new owners with their gear.

To make room, Apple stores will drop printers, scanners and maybe even some hard drives from the display area. The items will still be in stock, but not out front where they take up valuable retail space. Most games are also likely to be dropped, with Apple retail employees suggesting the online Mac App Store as a good place to find them

It's hard to fault Apple for these decisions. Most of the peripherals can be found at lower prices online. Getting people better and more personalized service seems like a good use of the retail space. The only caveat is that most of the stores are really noisy, and I'm hoping Apple can 'think different' about a way to reduce the racket in the stores so that training and setup can be a bit more pleasant.

  • Rumor: Best Buy to equip employees with iPads

best buy logoForbes reports that "...one of the country's top 10 largest retailers" is prepping to supply its floor employees with iPads. A source notes that the retailer in question has 1,000 locations in the US. Forbes suggests that, with 1,100 stores in its stable -- not to mention its existing partnership with Apple -- Best Buy is a likely match.

  • Some 2008 MacBooks, MacBook Pros can accept 8 GB of RAM

Older Core 2 Duo MacBook and MacBook Pros from late 2008 may support 8 GB of RAM, according to hardware parts vendor Other World Computer. Other World Computer discovered that a newer version of the EFI, when combined with an updated Boot ROM, would let the computer use the full 8 GB of RAM without slowdowns or crashes. EFI is the Mac equivalent of the BIOS firmware on IBM PCs.

Previous tests by Other World Computer revealed that these older Macs could accept 8 GB of RAM, but would come to screeching halt when an application tried to use the full 8 GB. The optimal RAM was assumed to be 6 GB according to tests by OWC. Despite this presumed limitation, reports circulating on the internet continued to suggest the older MacBook models could effectively use 8 GB of RAM with Snow Leopard.

OWC discovered that Apple released a new version of the EFI for these older MacBooks in 2009. This update was designed to reduce the noise from optical drives. OWC noticed that Apple modified the memory addressing in the update and did not notify anyone of these changes. OWC claims the Mac OS X software update does not recognize this latest version as new and does not prompt people to upgrade. Unbeknownst to them, most MacBook users continue to have the old code, which supports 6 GB.

After upgrading the EFI manually and installing the updated Boot ROM, OWC was able to efficiently access the full 8 GB of memory. This is good news for folks with an older MacBook as the 2 GB addition may give older models enough of a boost to stay in service for a little longer.

  • Apple working on video ringtones

Patently Apple recently uncovered a patent filed by Apple that describes methods for creating video ringtones for telephonic iOS devices like the iPhone. The technology is designed to allow users to automatically combine sound and video from various sources, including iTunes and iMovie, to create custom audio-visual alerts for incoming phone calls.

Patently Apple describes multiple ways the patent pending feature could automatically combine audio and video to create custom visuals for each incoming call.

In a simple example, visuals displayed on the device would react to associated audio much like a visualizer in iTunes. In another example, a layered composite could be assembled from multiple video or photographic sources. These layers could be independently animated based on different characteristics in the audio track, such as its mix of high and low frequencies.

The visuals would not be limited to 2D content. Apple's system could offer visual effects in 3D space, including movement, appearance, shape and differing camera angles.

The patent also describes a means for callers to send the "seed" information about a particular song or video. These caller "signatures" could further alter the visual experience for the recipient or offer dynamic links to relevant content for the receiver to check out later. Aside from offering a unique new method for verifying the identity of incoming callers, Patently Apple suggests this technology could bring social networking concepts to ringtones by allowing users to share their latest favorite songs and videos with the people they are calling.

The general concept of an animated ringtone is not new. App developers like iFoneTec already offer video ringtone software for the iPhone and Android platforms. (Note: iFoneTec's iPhone app appears to require a jailbroken device.) Existing video ringtone solutions appear limited to playing the same video clip every time a call comes in from a specified contact. Apple's proposed new technology seems to offer a more dynamic and extremely customizable experience that can be configured to some extent by both the caller and the receiver.

Of course, Apple often files patents for technologies that never find their way into shipping products. It's unknown whether or not we'll ever see Apple's dynamically animated ringtones on the iPhone. The technology described in the patent would certainly showcase the media capabilities of the iPhone and offer a variety of new opportunities for users to express themselves.

Apple's patent, credited to Brian McKnight and Michael Neuman, was originally filed in the third quarter of 2010.

  • iPad 2 line has formed in Texas

A tent has appeared outside of a Texas Apple Store, and it's believed to belong to the first person line for an iPad 2. That, or deforestation is taking its toll on area Boy Scout troops.

At right is a shot of the tent on McKinney Avenue in Dallas, which is serving as a temporary location for the Knox Street Apple Store while it's being renovated.

Who's in the tent? It's been suggested that it's Justin Wagoner, who was also the first to line up for the iPhone 4 in Texas. It sure looks like the same tent to us. Of course, it's quite possible that, in some zany scheme to turn a profit, the tent manufacturer produced more than one grey-and-white model of that size and shape.

iPad 2 sales will differ from the original iPad launch, as pre-orders are unavailable. That means, if you want to get an iPad 2 in person on Friday, you must first wait in line. See you then!

  • Making custom alert sounds for your Mac

When you're fed up with your Mac telling you it's not about to open the pod bay doors and wondering if, Dave, you really want to do that, you may want to think about making some custom sounds for it yourself. And as luck would have it, there's a great tutorial on how to do just that over at Macworld.

The article looks at both recording your own sounds and using GarageBand to convert your sound files, and how to add the resulting sounds to your system.

The article walks you through capturing your own sounds using a microphone and QuickTime Player in Snow Leopard, including how to get rid of initial pauses and the sound of you clicking your mouse at the end of the recording.

It goes on to discuss how to convert your recordings to the AIFF format needed for system sounds in OS X using iTunes or GarageBand, and then it explains how to insert the sounds into your system and attach them to specific events.

Again, it's a nice tutorial that we recommend you check out. Have fun.

  • Ask TUAW: The iPad 2 Is Almost Here! Edition

The iPad 2 is almost here, and in honor of Apple's latest gadget, we're having an iPad 2 edition of Ask TUAW this week! We got a few interesting queries from last week's post, but this is going to get mighty boring without your questions about the iPad 2, which will be released on Friday!

Here's what we need you to do: go to the comments of this post, think of those niggling questions that keep you awake at night thinking about your Mac, iPod, iPad 2, iPhone or AppleTV, and fire away. You can also email your questions directly to ask [at] tuaw.com.

I'll be at my local Apple Store for the iPad 2 launch on Friday, will you?

    Onward to questions!

Chris (and a number of others!) asks:

I own a first generation AT&T 3G iPad and will be upgrading to the iPad 2. I am grandfathered into the unlimited data package for $30 a month.

Can I transfer my data plan to my new iPad or are the data service "subscriptions" connected to a specific device?

Yes, you can! AT&T confirmed with me that it will be possible to grandfather your unlimited data plan to the iPad 2, but it hasn't released the exact mechanism for this upgrade. Most likely it will involve removing your micro-SIM from your original iPad and slapping it into your brand new iPad 2. We've got a few more days for everyone to figure out how it's going to work though.

  • Terminally Geeky: use automatic login more securely
    Automatic login preference shown enabled

Imagine if you rebooted your computer, and it automatically logged you in, launched all of your login apps, updated your Dropbox folder, MobileMe, email, RSS, Twitter and everything else without you even having to enter your password.

That auto-login capability is built into your Mac, and in fact, it may be the default setting on your Mac, so this may be how you're used to operating. But if you're like me, you disabled auto-login for security reasons, so when you reboot your Mac, it stops at the login screen, waiting for you to enter (or click on) your login name and enter your password.

What if you could have both? What if you could have the security of the login screen with the convenience of automatic login?

That's what I'm going to show you how to do.

  • Verizon crushes AT&T on iPad entry-level data rates

Well, I wish I didn't travel internationally so much after seeing the data rates both AT&T and Verizon are offering iPad users for monthly, non-contract plans. If you are deciding on whether to get a Verizon iPad or an AT&T one and will use 1 GB or less of data per month, Verizon just decided for you.

As you can see from the chart that AllThingsD assembled, Verizon offers substantially better 3G data rates for the iPad than AT&T does -- at least for those users who want to be on the lowest tier. For $15, AT&T will give you 250 MB of data per month, whereas for a mere $20, or just another five bucks, Verizon will give you 1 GB of data -- that's four times the amount from AT&T. If you want to keep it on the lowest tier, Verizon is the way to go.

  • Analyst: Apple sold 1.1 million MacBook Airs in 2010

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities predicts that Apple sold an impressive 1.1 million MacBook Air units in the last few months of 2010. Kuo originally predicted sales of 700,000 units but bumped up his estimate after receiving new information from Asian supply chain sources.

The second generation MacBook Air debuted in October 2010 in 11- and 13-inch models and is reportedly selling at a brisk rate. This boom in sales is casually evidenced by the growing number of MacBook Air models spotted in the wild. Its slim and sexy form factor, coupled with favorable reviews have only bolstered the popularity of this model.

Apple has not released sales figures for the MacBook Air, but its Q1 2011 financial earnings report confirmed the Cupertino company sold 2.9 million notebooks during the 2010 holiday shopping season. This sales number includes MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. If Kuo's 1.1 million estimate is accurate, then over 40 percent of Apple notebook sales came from the MacBook Air.

Kuo is not the only analyst to take note of the MacBook Air. Shortly after launch, Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar suggested the popularity of the MacBook Air may cannibalize iPad sales. We recently took our own look at the question of the MacBook Air versus iPad and came to the conclusion that the two devices target different audiences. The question is not whether the MacBook Air is superior to the iPad, but which device is best suited to your needs.

  • TweetCaster Pro: An alternative to the 'd**kbar' in the Twitter app

    Timing is everything.

Just about at the same moment that the official iOS Twitter apps were updated with a new "Quick Bar," which was met with almost universal disdain, Handmark started shipping its new TweetCaster (US$4.99 Pro and ad-supported free versions available) Twitter app for iPhone. There's no "dickbar" in TweetCaster, and in fact, the app does everything it can to let you zip the lips of annoying tweeters or trends.

Yeah, we've all seen a lot of Twitter apps, but TweetCaster is a bit different, and that's what made it interesting enough to try. The official Twitter app recently added the annoying Quick Bar, designed to let you know what was trending in Twitter, which means that lately it's been filled with the phrases "Classic Tattoo Fail," "Breakout Kings" (which appears to be a paid promotion for the new cable TV series), "thataintwinning" (somehow related to some actor from Ferris Bueller's Day Off), "Justin & Selena" and so on.

  • iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 JavaScript benchmarks show big performance gains

Some of the first speed tests coming in show that hardware and software improvements in the iPad 2 are giving it decent performance gains over its predecessor -- and over rival devices.

CNET UK decided to spend its brief hands-on time with the iPad 2 by running the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark, which CNET calls "an increasingly important indication of overall performance. The better a phone or tablet is at dealing with JavaScript, the faster more complicated websites such as Facebook will run, which means your whole experience with the device will feel faster."

CNET found initially that the iPad 2 is up to four times faster than the original iPad, but not all this speed improvement is down to the upgraded hardware. The speed advantage dropped to a 1.5x boost when CNET updated the original iPad's OS to a beta version of iOS 4.3 that it happened to have lying around. This could be good news for anyone who wants an original iPad just for web surfing. Heavy discounting to clear stock means you can pick one up for $100 less than this time last week, a bargain if you don't want the cameras and other goodies that the iPad 2 brings.

The other good news is the boasting rights this will give you over owners of rival Android hardware; iPad 2 cleaned the clocks of the Galaxy Tab (3x faster) and the Google Nexus S smartphone (also 3x faster). Since it will also be getting the iOS 4.3 update, the iPhone 4 will be 2.5x faster.

    Thanks Nik!
