  • Twitter update adds photo, video capture to iPad 2

The official Twitter app for iPad has been updated to version 3.3.2, and it now allows you to take and share photos and videos directly from your iPad 2. This functionality was already in there for the iPhone, of course, but now that the iPad is outfitted with a camera, Twitter has made it easy to take and share video directly from Apple's magical and revolutionary device.

The update has a few bug fixes, including a fix that helps location sharing work a little better. What the new version doesn't do is get rid of the trending topics quickbar, a feature that still has some users up in arms after it was added into the app a little while ago. But that fight aside for now, I look forward to seeing some iPads putting video and pictures on Twitter.

  • Real Racing 2 HD to support 1080p video out

Newer models of the iOS device line have offered excellent-quality video out for some time using Apple's VGA connector cable. Now, Apple's 30-pin to HDMI adapter pushes quality even further. Today, FireMint Games announced its updated Real Racing 2 HD will support full 1080p output with (breathless cut-and-paste-from-press-release-excitement!) "rock-solid frame rates, with an unbeatable hands-on, precision control method that'll have your console green with envy."

Sounds pretty cool? We think so too. Real Racing 2 has already won bunches of awards and this new update makes us want to get racing. Click "read more" to see a video of it in action.

Hat tip, Federico over at MacStories

  • Erase the social network past with Last Night Never Happened

Let's be honest: We all enjoy a good night out on the town occasionally, and when fun happens these days, chances are you might say or post something on various social networks that you probably shouldn't, be that something negative about your boss or your ex, or just a little too much information about your current state of mind. Now there's an iPhone app that purports to deal with exactly these lapses in judgement.

Last Night Never Happened is an iPhone app that, when given access to your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts, will delete or replace any social network postings that you happen to regret. The app will go back up to 48 hours, and as you can see in the demo, will clear out any photos, tweets, or Facebook posts you need to delete, optionally replacing them with a much nicer message.

Unfortunately, the app doesn't do any more than Twitter or Facebook, so all of those OK Cupid messages you sent are there to stay. And according to the fine print on the app, it doesn't do Facebook's status updates either, so you'll have to go deal with those yourself. But if you often find yourself regretting messages you sent and posted the night before, Last Night Never Happened may be able to help. It's $1.99 on the App Store right now.

  • Apple wins first round in patent fight with Nokia

A Judge with the International Trade Commission in Washington has sided with Apple in a dispute Nokia brought claiming the iPhone was violating key patents.

Bloomberg News and other wire services report that the ITC has found that Apple isn't violating 5 Nokia patents. Nokia had asked the Commission to bar the sale of the iPhone. Apple doesn't have any comment on the decision today and a Nokia spokesperson in Finland says the company does not agree there has been no violation. The patents in question are related to cameras, battery life, messaging, speakers and the touch screen.

Apple has brought its own patent action against Nokia. Another Judge is expected to have a decision on that issue in June. Today's findings by the ITC Judge are subject to review by the six member Commission.

  • Pulse News pushes out a significant update for iPhone news junkies

Pulse has been a major player in the news aggregation world, garnering good reviews from TUAW and users. Pulse has released version 2.0 for the iPhone and a good program has become even better.

Here's a quick summary of the improvements:

    • Triple the news sources
    • A personalization option
    • Improved speed. The better performance was immediately obvious when I used it
    • Better search that now includes most popular news feeds

This release in general brings Pulse up to the standard of the iPad release. The update now requires iOS 4.0 or above.

I check Pulse several times a day and find it very useful. I'm also loving Zite, which I reviewed last week. Zite is iPad-only, but it is a great way to quickly see what is happening in your areas of interest. On the iPad, I use both apps and get the best of both. Zite is better for discovery of news and information, Pulse News is more restricted to what you tell it you want, but in this latest iPhone release Pulse is moving toward a discovery model as well. Try them both. They are free and I think you'll really like the results you get.

  • Tragedy in Japan hasn't "meaningfully impacted iPad 2 supply"

The Japanese earthquake had a devastating effect on the people of Japan and temporarily shut down many manufacturing facilites. Analysts speculated this disaster might have produced a shortage of key components used in the electronics manufacturing process, but according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, this shortage will have minimal effect on the future supply of the iPad 2.

Munster expects the current shortage of the iPad 2 to continue into the June 2011 quarter, but this shortage is the result of excessive demand, not component production issues. Both the iPad and the iPhone 4 could see, at most, a one to two week delay as a result of earthquake-related shutdowns. This is good news for Apple customers looking to score an iPad 2, especially those international fans who waited in long lines today, only to walk away empty-handed.

Of course, there are many problems Japan faces these days that are much more important than producing computers, but it's good to hear that this isn't another issue to deal with. A resumption of Japanese manufacturing will also help to stimulate the economy in Japan and help rebuild the devastated country.

  • iPad 2 video mirroring to Mac, the cheap and dirty way

Earlier this week, I wrote a lengthy post about how Erica Sadun and I were struggling to find a way to capture video from an iPad 2 on a Mac. Erica wanted to do screencasts, my goal was to have a good way to grab live video from an iPad 2 and broadcast it on TUAW TV Live. We both had a secondary requirement -- whatever the solution ended up being, it had to be inexpensive.

We had received many good comments from readers with possible solutions, but many of them were above our respective budgets. Erica spent countless hours searching around Amazon, looking for the perfect solution. When she finally limped in, exhausted, dehydrated, and dropped the all-important Amazon link at my feet, I knew that we had solved the puzzle. That final piece of the puzzle showed up yesterday afternoon, and I'm now able to grab video from the iPad 2 for about $104.

It's certainly not a high resolution answer to my video capture needs, but it does the job. We're simply looking for a real-time presentation and recording option, and we have it. The pieces are as follows (from right to left in the photo):

    • Apple VGA Adapter ($29.00) -- This is connected to the iPad 2, of course. The other end is connected to...
    • Sewell PC to TV Converter ($37.95) -- This was the missing piece. This box has a VGA input on one side and composite video out on the other. That composite video goes to...
    • Geniatech iGrabber ($36.99) -- This is the part that plugs into the Mac's USB port, and uses a proprietary app to display the incoming video on the Mac's display.

  • Kodak wants $1B in royalties revenue from Apple, RIM

At about 5:00 PM in Washington, D.C., today, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will decide if it should review a judge's findings from January that concluded neither Apple's iPhone or RIM's Blackberry infringed patents held by Eastman Kodak Company. Antonio Perez, CEO of Kodak, told Bloomberg a victory could be worth more than US$1 billion in royalty revenue for the beleaguered company, which lost almost half its market value in the past year.

"This is a lot of money, big money," Perez told Bloomberg.

The dispute centers on a patent broadly described as an "image-preview feature in camera phones." In 2009, Kodak filed similar complaints against Korean manufacturers Samsung and LG Electronics. In those cases, both related to the same patents Apple and RIM are accused of violating, the ITC ruled in favor of the 131-year-old Kodak company. Samsung and LG paid a combined $964 million to settle the matter before it could be escalated to the ITC's full six-member commission which has the authority to ban importation of products that infringe U.S. patents.

  • Apple reportedly working on music locker launch

Stop me if you've heard this one before: Apple is working on cloud-based music storage.

The Music Void suggests that Apple has sealed a deal with the Warner Music Group in regards to an online music "locker" that will be a part of a forthcoming update to MobileMe. Apple is supposedly using that deal to persuade other labels to jump on board.

There's a healthy serving of guesswork with a side of conjecture in that article, so do with it what you will. After all, Apple's got to use Lala and all that storage for something.

  • Commonwealth Bank's Sydney swaps employee Dells for MacBook Airs

Staff at the Commonwealth Bank in Sydney, Australia are preparing to move to a new location, where a fleet of 11" MacBook Airs will replace their Dell desktops.

According to website iTnews, most of the desktop Dell computers used by the bank's 4,000 employees will be replaced with the MacBook Airs. However, those machines will continue to run Windows. "It is just a hardware change," the bank noted in an email obtained by iTnews. It's presumed that the move is meant to prevent bank employees from having to learn a new operating system. It's unknown if proprietary or mission-critical, Windows-only software was a part of the decision, not to mention the bank's IT department.

It's also interesting to note that the bank has done away with traditional offices and desks for many. Instead, they've set up many docking stations with a display, mouse, keyboard and network access. Also, LCD collaboration screens and smart whiteboards will be used for presentations.

Here's hoping Comm Bank workers enjoy their new Airs, and are prompted to see what they can do with Mac OS X installed.

  • iPad 2 launch day in Ireland

Another report from our special correspondent in Ireland, James Britton

It's a beautiful day in Dublin to be standing in line for the international launch of iPad 2, but apparently Dubliners have better things to do. Either that, or I'm just the only one obsessed about it since last night. Morning checks at Compu b and HMV on Grafton Street in Central Dublin were met with bustling sidewalks but no iPad queues. I have confirmed with Compu b that they will have stock and are the only Apple reseller that seems to have a plan for today. Their 4 locations in Ireland will close at 4:00 pm today to reset and reopen for the iPad 2 unveiling at 5:00 pm. An HMV employee could not confirm any details other than it will be available from 5:00.

While I was milling about Compu b for 10 minutes at midday, I overheard around 4 or 5 other customers asking about iPad availability but none of them stuck around to form a line. The same scenario at HMV down the street - still no queue.

The Irish seem to have Spring fever rather than iPad fever as the thermometer has risen above 50ºF (10ºC). My guess is as soon as the shops close at 4:00, the itch to buy will settle in and queues will form.

UPDATE: I left at about 12:00 for about 2 hours with no line formed and now there 22 people in front of me and 8 behind me. The lucky man to be first in the queue is Kevin who will be buying 2 32 GB 3G-enabled models. Enda Crowley, Compu b Dublin's social media manager, was "shocked to see this many customers waiting with 3 hours to go" and said he will make sure to tally the stock so that nobody in the queue will be disappointed.

  • MacTech Conference 2011 announced for November

mactech conference 2011MacTech Conference 2011 has been announced for November 2-4, 2011 in Los Angeles. Registration is now open with a limited number of early bird slots available. The event will again be at the Sheraton, which sold out some nights last year. We visited MacTech Conference in 2010 and were thoroughly impressed. The efficiency of the event, plus the depth of content for Mac IT folks or developers (there are two tracks) makes it worth the cost. Check out last year's lineup here.

The conference lasts three days, with events during the day and the night. There are lots of opportunities for people to meet, learn from each other and discuss what was seen each day. MacTech acquired NSConference US and has a new Developer Sessions Chair, Steve "Scotty" Scott. Check out Scotty in action on iDeveloper.tv -- he knows what he's talking about! This also means expanded developer sessions from last year. MacTech Magazine is well-known to IT folks, and those sessions will no doubt be stellar again this year.

Pricing for MacTech is $999 for three days, meals included, a MacTech Magazine subscription and sessions, plus all the evening entertainment. Early bird registration knocks that down to $799. There are a limited number of scholarships available as well, and you can find out more here.

We'll be there again this year and report from the conference. Hope to see you at MacTech Conference 2011!

  • QuickCal for Mac: natural language events and todos for iCal

QuickCal has been one of my favorite ways to add items to iCal. It started with a Dashboard widget that let me use natural language to add calendar events. I loved it (actually wrote about it back in '09). Then it became an iOS app, QuickCal Mobile, and I was able to add entries with blazing speed while on-the-go, as well as view all of my upcoming appointments within the app. It currently has a place on my iPhone dock for instant access. Now, QuickCal is a desktop application, available in the Mac App Store, and it has some cool new capabilities.

The natural language engine is pretty smart to begin with. You can type things like "Dr. appt 4p" and an event is created for today at 4:00pm titled "Dr. appt." You can also get more verbose, adding locations and start and end times. It does todo items, too. "todo - Get something done by wed" will add a task to iCal with a due date. That's not working for me in the current version, but I've seen video of it working splendidly in the upcoming 2.3 release.

You set a default calendar to add to, but you can change the target calendar by typing part of the calendar's name in the entry box. It can run menubar only, dock only or both. You can also set it up to launch directly to entry mode and quit after you finish one event or todo. That's perfect if you just want to run it from Quicksilver or LaunchBar and not have it running permanently.

The menubar offers a dropdown showing all of your upcoming appointments and todo items. You can click an entry to open it in iCal, but you don't really need to. You can see everything you need to -- and in the upcoming version you can also check off tasks and see priorities and days until due -- from that little icon up there. Once the new version is approved by Apple, it will actually turn iCal into a much handier todo list than it normally would be.

Smart reminders automatically set alarms based on the distance away an event is, and the duration of the event. If you set a day long event for a month away, you'll get reminders at configurable intervals up to the date. If your new event starts in an hour, you can automatically set just a 15 minute alarm. You can turn this off, but it makes setting reminders a breeze.

Sound good? Grab it fast, it's only US$.99 while the upcoming version is in review with Apple. It could be days, it could be hours ... who knows? But it's cheap right now, and handy for anyone who uses iCal.

  • Flex testing iPad glass

The folks at iFixYouri had some glass panels from an iPad 1 and an iPad 2 laying around the shop and did some informal tests to see which panel would break under stress. An earlier analysis by iFixit revealed the glass in the iPad 2 was 27% thinner than the iPad 1. The California repair company questioned whether this would affect the durability of the iPad 2's display. Boston repair shop iFixYouri tries to answer this question in a video that features extreme bending, breaking glass and a catchy soundtrack.

Read on to watch the iFixYouri video and let us know in the comments which display you think holds up better under pressure. Hint: bigger isn't always better.

  • New iPhone ad features Game Center

Apple released another "If you don't have an iPhone" advertisement that promotes Game Center on the iOS platform. The short, but sweet video introduces the iPhone as the smartphone with the largest number of games and a built-in social network for gaming. Introduced with iOS 4.0, Game Center sets Apple apart from its competition. The closest competitor to Game Center is the Xbox Live integration on Windows Phone 7. The Xbox Live hub lets Windows Phone users link their phone to their gamer tag and play mobile-enabled Xbox Live games on their handset.

As was the case with the previous advertisements, the semi-smug presentation will undoubtedly raise the ire of Android and BlackBerry users whose mobile operating systems can't quite compete in the gaming arena. Read on to watch the video and leave your thoughts in the comments. In what may be a mistake, Apple has enabled comments on this YouTube video so feel free to chime in there, too.

  • iPad 2 Ireland launch guide

    Guest post by James Britton

Ireland: the land of Guinness, shamrocks, leprechauns and soon - Thinner. Lighter. Faster. FaceTime. Smart Covers. 10-hour battery. Well, the Yanks have had their two-week head start, now it's our turn. It's the eve of the international launch of iPad 2 and excitement is building here in Dublin. We've got a quick preview of what to expect in Ireland for Apple's big day today.

Compu b, the only Apple Premium Reseller in Ireland and the closest thing to a bonafide Apple Store in the Republic, will have limited stocks of iPad 2 on hand from 5 PM local time today. The stores will close at 4 PM then reopen at 5 PM and there are four locations in Ireland where you can queue up: two in Dublin, one in Limerick and one in Cork. I spoke with one of the staff members in the central Dublin location on Grafton Street and he confirmed they would indeed have them. Unfortunately, he did not have any information about quantity available and was even a bit dismissive of my questions about the launch. I'll chalk that up to the fact that he was probably exhausted from dealing with the 999 other people who had similar questions.

Fortunately, their website will be updated with more details as they become available. After checks with all the major mobile phone networks, it appears Compu b is the only reseller in Ireland that will be selling the iPad 2, apart from Victoria Square in Belfast, Northern Ireland. However, it might also be worth checking HMV since they have been selling the first-gen iPad.

    Pricing

Prices will start at €479 (including VAT) for the 16 GB WiFi-only iPad, all the way up to €799 for the 64 GB 3G-enabled model. Following are the current 3G data plans offered by the four major networks:

    3 - 30 days, 15 GB allowance for €19.99

    Meteor - 30 days, 7.5 GB allowance for €19.99

    O2 - 30 days, 5 GB allowance for €20

    Vodafone - 30 days, 5 GB allowance for €20

None of the plans require an activation fee, all are pay-as-go, VAT is included and bill-pay plans are available with higher data allowances. These plans are very generous, especially the one from 3. Competition is a good thing.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Max and the Magic Marker

Max and the Magic Marker is a really incredible game. It's won awards everywhere, and now it's available from EA on iOS for iPhone and iPad. Essentially, the game is a platformer with Max having to navigate the weird game world by moving and jumping around. But the twist is he also has a magic marker that can be used to draw real-world objects that he can physically interact with. When you combine Max's platforming with the physics-based items created by the Magic Marker, things can get pretty wild.

It's a lot of fun, and the puzzles included in the game are limited only by your creativity. Max and the Magic Marker originally came out on Nintendo's WiiWare platform, but it's available on iOS now with full Retina Display support across all 58 levels. There's no Game Center integration, which is a disappointment, especially from EA, but considering that it's basically a solo affair, it's not a deal breaker. Max and the Magic Marker is US$1.99 on the iPhone (and note that it only works with the 3GS and up) or $4.99 on the iPad.

  • A look at Weather+ and more weather apps for your forecasting pleasure

There are dozens of weather apps available for iOS. Most of us are pretty interested in the weather, no matter where we live. It can affect our schedules, our driving and our recreation. In my case, I do both landscape and astronomical photography, so I'm all over the latest weather information and forecasts. It's probably the same for many of our readers.

Weather+ is on sale for US$0.99. It's a universal app, and a big one, at over 265 MB. The app's huge size comes about because there are a lot of videos that provide a background and give you a visual clue to the current conditions. As weather apps go, it's very pretty, but you have to decide if you want to let it gobble up all that storage.

The app has an impressive list of features. There's no limit to the cities that can show a forecast. You get the usual temperature, wind, humidity, precipitation and visibility details, a five day forecast, and the current time at each of your selected weather locations. You also get some control of how much detail to display.

  • Plug it all in with the 5-in-1 Connection Kit for iPad

    5-in-1 iPad connection kit

Technology. Always moving forward. Faster, slimmer, more versatile. And capable of providing the world with this 5-in-1 Connection Kit for iPad. It was only three months ago when we wrote about the virtues of a 3-in-1 connection kit from the M.I.C. Gadget Store. But technology hurtles onward like a rocket car, and iPad users now have the option to buy a single adapter that can read Micro SD cards and SD cards, connect to power, computers, or peripherals with USB and mini-USB ports, and send an analog video signal to a TV using composite AV cables. That's five adapters in one device, although no more than one of its five functions will operate simultaneously; users can only plug one device into the adapter at a time.

How can you get one of these available-only-in-white über-adapters for your iPad? First, make sure you own an iPad or iPad 2 running iOS 4.2.1 or 4.3. Then, visit usbfever.com to buy your own 5-in-1 Connection Kit for US$44.99 plus shipping.

  • Motion Doctor turns your iPad into a physical therapist

I've got a lot of friends who are doctors, physical therapists and trigger point therapists. One thing they all tell me is that patients usually follow and perform prescribed exercises flawlessly while seeing the PT, but as time goes on and the patients are expected to do their exercises at home, they usually aren't as effective because the PT isn't there guiding their every move.

Motion Doctor for iPad (US$14.99) hopes to remedy this. The app contains over 60 professionally shot videos under the guidance of Dr. Desirea Caucci, who is rated one of the top three physical therapists in the nation. The videos are divided into categories including body part, activity, sport or profession. Select your category, say "sport," then choose what sport you do most, such as bicycling. You'll then be presented with a list of exercises and stretches all cyclists should be doing in order to prevent injury. Tap on one of the exercises to see a video demonstrating the exercise, complete with voiced step-by-step instructions.

Even if you aren't an athlete, you can still benefit from this app. It's got sections filled with exercises and stretches for those of us who do lighter activities, such as gardening, sewing, computer work and even watching TV. But the thing I love most about this app is that it gives you a rationale for each exercise or stretch that it tells you you should do. I've been to a few physical therapists, and the good ones always take the time to explain why an exercise is going to benefit you, not just that it will "help fix your knee." This app tells you the why and the how. I highly recommend Motion Doctor for physical therapists and anyone who wishes to maintain injury-free activities no matter what their sport or occupation.

  • Mac mini mounting madness

If you have a new Mac mini that you'd like to mount somewhere, like under a desk or entertainment center, there are two new solutions you can look at.

The first, which we received in the last week from NewerTech, is the NuShelf. This mount comes in two versions. One has a single shelf for holding one Mac mini or a Time Capsule. The NuShelf Dual Mount (see photo above) is slightly deeper for holding two Mac minis, two Time Capsules or one of each. The NuShelf is made of clear PETG thermoplastic, with a circular hole in the bottom to hold the newer Mac mini "memory door." There are also two cutouts in the back to make it easy to reach the SD card slot and power button.

The single shelf version is US$39.95, while the Dual Mount is slightly more expensive at $44.95. The NuShelf is predrilled for mounting and includes four screws to finish the job. Unlike some of the metal shelves that are available, NewerTech notes that the plastic NuShelf is transparent to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals.

  • International iPad 2 launch snapshot: New Zealand

Here's a preview of what international Apple fans can expect for the iPad 2 launch later today. The iPad 2 went on sale in New Zealand about an hour ago as I write this. About 15 minutes or so later, it pretty much sold out nationwide. iPhonewzealand has a good roundup of user pics from lineups all over the nation, and though the lines are much shorter than in the States, they still show great enthusiasm.

Two stores in the city I live in were authorized to sell the iPad 2 according to Apple's website: Dick Smith Electronics (DSE) and JB Hi-Fi. I watched the line progress at DSE, where about 40 people had lined up by the time the launch took place at 5 PM local time. Oddly enough, the first person in line said he'd only queued up an hour beforehand; by contrast, people in major cities like Auckland and Wellington had been in line for several hours hoping to buy Apple's latest gadget. This was in spite of the fact that many resellers didn't give line standers official confirmation that they had stock on hand until well into the day -- New Zealand doesn't have any official Apple Stores, and for some reason, resellers were being very coy throughout the day.

Dick Smith sold through its entire stock of iPad 2 units in 15 minutes. Store employees wouldn't divulge exactly how many units they had ("very limited" was all they could tell me), but based on the number of people who left empty-handed, I'd say this store received a total of 25 units. JB Hi-Fi, on the other hand, actually had stock left over when I went there, with two units unsold. JB Hi-Fi's employees confirmed that they, too, received only around 25 units in total. The good news is, if you do manage to snag an iPad 2, you won't be left wanting for accessories. Although virtually every iPad 2 buying customer left DSE with a Smart Cover, there were dozens left over afterward.

Extrapolating upward from ~50 units sold in Palmerston North, that means New Zealand received at most 2500 iPad 2 units on launch day. Note that this is a very rough back-of-the-envelope calculation based on comparing the number of units in Palmerston North (50) versus its population (~80,000) versus the population of New Zealand (about four million). In reality, I'd guess the total number of iPad 2s sold today probably numbers closer to 1500 or less -- still much higher than my very pessimistic estimate of 500 units. That being said, given the very limited stock sold where I live and the 3-4 week shipping delay, I'm glad I got mine from the States.

All told, this paints a picture for the international iPad 2 launch that pretty much everyone had to expect after seeing how things went down in the US -- though countries like the UK and Australia, who both have official Apple Retail Stores, are likely to get much more allocated stock than New Zealand, where everything goes through resellers. Yes, the iPad 2 is launching in 25 countries on March 25..., but if you want one, you'd better get in line as soon as you finish reading this sentence. Go!

  • Muscle System Pro II shows the great potential of iPad apps

Mark my words: Muscle System Pro II will one day appear in an iPad commercial. It's that good. This is one of those apps that show you just how powerful the iPad can be. Muscle System Pro II by 3D 4 Medical is an interactive learning tool that allows the user to completely explore the muscular anatomy of the human body. It uses photorealistic 3D models that the user can control in real time. You can strip away muscle layer by layer, rotate around them, view different parts of the body from different angles, and that's just for starters.

You can look up 433 of the major muscles in the human body. Rotate any part of the body around to see its anterior, superior, inferior or lateral views. Pinch to zoom in on a specific muscle, and you'll see just how detailed the 3D models are -- you can even see the direction the muscle and fascia fibers are running. When you tap on a muscle's pin (a marker labeling the muscle), a pop-up shows the muscle's name, its origin, insertion, what action it performs, its innervation and its arterial supply. Furthermore, you can add a note to the muscle to record your thoughts or comments about it.

Muscle System Pro II isn't cheap at US$39.99, but this isn't your run of the mill app. This is a 3D powerhouse of interactive anatomy that every doctor, chiropractor, nurse practitioner and massage therapist should own, not to mention every medical student or anyone interested in human anatomy. When you use an app like this, it's easy to tell that tablets are not just the future of consumer computing, but of learning and medical reference as well.

Check out the video after the break to see Muscle System Pro II in action.

  • iPad 2 international lines now in full swing

The retail launch of the iPad 2 in countries around the world is fast approaching (or already underway, depending on where you are), and lines are in full swing. For those keeping track, the iPad 2 will launch today, March 25, in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK at 5 PM local time.

Similar to the US launch, the international lines for the iPad 2 are long, with many folks reporting hundreds of people in line. According to Rob Edwards, one Sydney store reportedly has 400-500 people waiting for an iPad 2. Germany is also reporting long lines with nearly 800 people lined up in Munich and Oberhausen. We have canvassed our readers and scoured Twitter to give you glimpse of the excitement. Check out our gallery below to see what is happening across the globe. We will update our gallery with fresh images as the rollout begins in Europe, Canada and Mexico.

  • Samurai II and Supermarket Mania now on Mac App Store

Two popular games on iOS have found their way to the Mac App Store recently. First up, Samurai II: Vengeance was recognized as a TUAW Daily App a while back, and it's still a great game with solid action gameplay, a great graphical look and plenty of polish. Those features have all made it to the official Mac App store release, and for US$13.99, you can play the game on a big screen at 60 FPS with actual buttons (probably a keyboard and mouse).

Supermarket Mania is another popular iOS game in the time management vein, and its sequel (originally a PC title) is now on the Mac App Store. The game sends protagonist Nikki to "Tinseltown," where she's got to organize and grow a supermarket while making sure the shelves are stocked and the customers are happy. Supermarket Mania 2 is $6.99 and is a nice addition to the time management genre for Apple's growing platform.

  • Come join a TUAW meetup on April 3

Wow! Just a few weeks ago we mentioned TUAW meetups on April 3 to celebrate the availability of the original iPad. Less than a year later, the iPad 2 is available -- along with thousands of apps tuned to the larger screen. Some of those apps are multiplayer, and we hope you'll bring those along with you to the meetups.

Currently we're having meetups in over 60 cities worldwide. Just head over to this Meetup page and either join an existing meetup or start one of your own! Ideally, you could meet at a place with Wi-Fi, but that isn't required. We also prefer the venue be all ages (not 18 or 21-and-up). Load up some multiplayer games to play with others, or just bring some cool apps you've found that you'd like to share.

We hope to see you there!

  • Square Enix launches Hippos Lab, puts App Store titles on sale

Legendary Japanese game developer Square Enix has launched an internal studio called Hippos Lab, which will be dedicated strictly to making original content for smartphone platforms (specifically Android and iOS, we're guessing, but the company's obviously leaving its options open). The studio's been working on a title since March 7, and we're supposed to see its output very soon. Square Enix has already had a lot of success with its own content on the App Store, both original games and ports from other platforms, but this is a more formal dedication of resources to the mobile gaming market.

And speaking of Square Enix's content, the company has put a whole slew of its titles on sale to celebrate the Final Fantasy III release earlier this week. We already told you the first two Final Fantasy games were on sale, but the original Chaos Rings RPG is also half off (cheaper than I've ever seen it), as is the great old Secret of Mana title. And the puzzle/real-time strategy game Sliding Heroes has dropped to the low price of completely free. Some excellent deals from Square Enix on the store right now.

  • Apple files patent for graphics-based contact management

AppleInsider has discovered a recently filed patent by Apple that would, if implemented, overhaul the way users navigate through their contacts on the iPhone. The patent, "Segmented Graphical Representations for Recommending Elements," describes a way for users to navigate through their iOS contacts in a way other than through text-based lists.

An example of how Apple would use graphical elements to let users sort through their contacts would be by presenting a collection of graphical tiles which display thumbnail photographs of the contacts. Tap on the photograph to view that contact's information or (perhaps) directly call them. Using images for contact navigation isn't limited to just an individual contact's photo, however. Apple also states that people who work in the same company, for example, could be grouped into one image such as the company's logo. Click on the logo to see all the contacts you have at that company.

The patent also describes how graphics-based representation system could be applied to music, allowing users to search through their music by album covers presented in a mosaic tile. Apple typically files patents for things that never materialize, but that's not to say this graphics-based music and contact management system won't show up in iOS 5. The Contacts app itself has not seen a significant update since its inception in the first iPhone OS, while the iPod/Music software in iOS has received very few updates since its inception as well. Now about that Weather app (is a location-based/rotate-to-view-hourly-forecast weather app really that hard?)...

  • Mac OS X 10.6.7 suggests support for generic video cards

Hacker Tony of TonyMacx86 discovered that the latest Mac OS X 10.6.7 update for the 2011 MacBook Pro includes native graphics acceleration for select AMD and ATI video cards. These cards include seven Radeon 5xxx and three 6xxx models that are not present in any shipping Mac products.

Several of these AMD/ATI cards may debut in the upcoming refresh of the Apple iMac line, but Tony believes Apple's support for these cards extends beyond built-in hardware. The hacker proposes the idea that Apple may support off-the-shelf video solutions in its upcoming desktop models.

In this scenario, a Mac user would be able to swap out their video card, similar to how PC users replace video hardware on their Windows machines. Most Macs do not currently offer user-replaceable video cards, with the exception of the Mac Pro line; even there, only a very small subset of the cards on the market have Mac-compatible drivers.

  • Verizon prices first-gen iPads to move

Following in the footsteps of AT&T, Verizon has drastically lowered prices on the first generation Wi-Fi iPad, according to MacRumors. If you stop by a Verizon store, you can now pick up the 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad for only $299, the 32 GB Wi-Fi for $399 and the 64 GB Wi-Fi for $499. These prices are obviously only good while supplies last.

Last week we noted that AT&T had dropped prices on all of its first-gen iPad 3G models. Currently, the only iPad 3G model AT&T still has in stock is the 64 GB one for only $529. Considering that's only $30 more than the 64 GB Wi-Fi model from Verizon, AT&T's stock of that model is sure to run out soon.
