- Firefox 4 for Mac: faster, more customizable, and still free
Firefox 4 (free) is now available for your favorite computing platform, Mac OS X. If you've used the Mozilla browser in the past, you're probably already aware of the update. If not, this is a chance to download and try a laudable Mac browser.
The biggest improvement in Firefox 4 is speed. Although we were unable to perform our own benchmarks, the Firefox website shows that page rendering speeds have improved anywhere from three to six times those of the previous release. The Mozilla engineers also worked in a new layers-based graphics system that takes advantage of OpenGL in Mac OS X for faster performance on graphics-intensive websites. In reality, Firefox still felt slightly slower than Safari in terms of opening and rendering websites, although it feels much faster than previous versions of the browser.
As with previous versions of Firefox, there are numerous plugins and add-ons available, as well as "personas" to customize the browser's look and feel. Some plugins will need to be updated from earlier versions, requiring a restart of the browser before they'll work properly.
Firefox Sync is a feature that's available to sync your open browser tabs, bookmarks, and even passwords between devices. If you install Firefox 4 onto several Macs, like an iMac and a MacBook Air, after closing Firefox on the desktop machine and launching the browser on the laptop you can pick up right where you left off. Regretfully, since there's no Firefox for iPhone or iPad, you can't sync your settings to those devices.
For those who hate downward facing tabs in the tabbed browser interface, you can rejoice in the fact that the new Firefox default puts the tabs on top. If you prefer downward facing tabs, no problem -- you can change the setting. I was glad to see that toolbars are now much more customizable. A control-click lets you add or remove many buttons, including various Google applications or even a print button.
I won't belabor the description of the rest of Firefox 4's new features here. Firefox fans should go out and download the update immediately; the rest of you might want to try out the free browser just to see if the new features are enough to make you switch.

Переслать - iPhoto 11 freezes cured by 10.6.7 update?
Looks like this may have done the trick. The Apple support board has been filled for months with complaints about major freezes in iPhoto 11. The issue many people had, including myself, was that iPhoto would freeze, sometimes for 5 minutes or more.
In fact, your whole Mac would become unresponsive. Then, after a while, things would return to normal. It was happening on some older Intel Mac Pro machines, and some iMacs. The common thread seemed to be Macs that had a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card, but some other cards were implicated as well.
It got so bad some people gave up on iPhoto completely, and moved to Aperture or Picasa. Every update to either Snow Leopard or iPhoto got hopes up, but nothing seemed to help. Until now. The latest update to Snow Leopard seems to have squashed the bug and many people are finding the mysterious paralysis is now gone.
I tried iPhoto 11 myself today, and could not trigger the lock up no matter what I did. So if you've been suffering from the problem, see if this latest OS update fixes the issue and give us the good, or bad news.

Переслать - Could future iPhones charge with the power of the sun?
Mark Spoonauer at LAPTOP got a nice story at CTIA today when he sat down with French company Wysips. The prototype he saw puts a solar panel -- a transparent solar panel, thin enough to work with touchscreens -- directly atop the screen of a phone, and with enough oomph to charge the phone with light.
The photovoltaic film (less than 100 microns deep) is only in the development phase now, but Wysips is looking forward to working with glass manufacturers (like Corning, makers of the Gorilla Glass that covers the iPhone 4) to integrate the charger film directly into screen glass.
The solar layer will generate power in room light or sunlight; this version will fully charge a phone in about 6 hours of light exposure, with future generations becoming more efficient as the technology matures. Like the plug-in hybrid technology in today's cars, it might not be enough juice to get you cross-country -- but if the solar film is cheap enough, it would certainly provide a power boost when you're away from your charger.
Fun stuff. Check out the post on LAPTOP's blog and the accompanying gallery of the Wysips prototype.

Переслать - Iconfactory working on open-source iOS frameworks for Mac OS X
The Iconfactory is one of the premiere Mac development houses, and as Iconfactory developer Craig Hockenberry posts on his blog, they've just contributed to the developer community "in a big way."
The team has introduced an open source framework called Chameleon, which provides apps designed for iOS an easier porting path to run on Mac OS X as well. Most of the work came from tools built to handle Iconfactory's own apps, but they've released the code to other developers interested in reusing iOS code for Mac OS apps.
A lot of the ins and outs we'll leave for the developers to figure out (the project page admits that Apple may be working on exactly the same kind of solution, and Iconfactory says that if Apple tells them to shut it down, they will), but the bottom line for us users is that developers accustomed to creating iOS apps will have an easier time bringing those same projects over to Mac OS X. That means more quality iOS apps making the leap onto the Mac App Store, and better selection all around.
The project is far from done -- Iconfactory admits that it was really just a toolkit built for their own apps, and the code has lots of holes that the documentation doesn't cover. But they are working on it and accepting donations, and interested developers will be able to contribute as well. It sounds like an interesting project, and it should pave the way for even better apps on both platforms going forward.

Переслать - Xperia Play ad rags on iPhone gaming
Sony has released a few tongue-in-cheek Internet ads for its new Xperia Play smartphone (basically, the PSP phone everyone's been waiting for). In one of the ads, which you can see embedded after the break, performer/Daily Show correspondent/biggest fan of Flight of the Conchords Kristen Schaal goes after "another smartphone" and its gaming capabilities -- namely the iPhone and its button-free touchscreen.
The actual criticisms are pretty vague, to be honest -- there's hints that touchscreen controls don't work so well and even some intimation that the iPhone's screen is somehow too small to see some of the gameplay. In general, everything lands more on the jokey side than any actual pairups.
But that's almost certainly an iPhone she's holding, and this is the most direct attack we've seen from Sony's side going after Apple and its mobile gaming market growth. The Xperia Play has lots of other things to deal with before taking on the iPhone (it's had a pretty disastrous pre-launch so far), but this is an interesting shot across the bow.

Переслать - Apple TV 2 a bit cranky lately? There's a new update today
If you have a 2nd generation Apple TV that has exhibited some flickering or failure to wake from sleep, Apple has just the update you've been waiting for.
Software update 4.2.1 (build 2100) can be had by going to your Settings Menu on your Apple TV, then select General and then Update Software. You can also update your Apple TV by connecting it to your Mac or PC with a Micro USB cable and opening iTunes. (Yes, the Apple TV internal version numbering doesn't align with the overall iOS version, which is 4.3 at the moment.)
The update also fixes audio glitches on some TV models, and then adds the patented Apple 'stability and performance fixes' we know and love. If you have a 2nd generation Apple TV get clicking. The update is suggested for all Apple TV 2nd generation owners.
Important note: Several people are having trouble logging into Netflix after this update. I've confirmed that issue, but I can't bring up Netflix from my iPad or desktop Mac either. Now Netflix has this update on its website. "We're sorry, the Netflix website and the ability to instantly watch movies are both temporarily unavailable."
Thanks to Markus for the heads up.

Garage Band for iPad is, I'm pleased to say, another one of those apps. Software that melds so perfectly with the iPad hardware that when you show it off to someone, their natural inclination is to say "Oh, so that's why I should buy one of these devices."
I love finding those apps.

Переслать - TeleNav GPS for iPhone 4: Free maps, inexpensive turn-by-turn service
At CTIA in Orlando, Florida, TeleNav today announced a new GPS solution for iPhone 4 users. Available immediately in the App Store, TeleNav GPS (free) gives starts off providing 30 free days of personal navigation service, including spoken turn-by-turn directions, 3D moving maps, auto-rerouting, and enhanced search of over 22 million points of interest.
After 30 days, users can choose to just stay with the map and search service, or they can make an in-app purchase of $2.99 per month or $21.99 a year for the full navigation service. The company already has over 20 million subscribers to their services, one of which is the AT&T Navigator app.
That app, which is specific to AT&T subscribers, is also free to download, but costs $9.99 per month or $69.99 per year. The AT&T Navigator app provides many more features at this point, including real-time traffic updates, the ability to download maps for off-line use, and one-touch speech recognition.
TeleNav introduced TeleNav GPS for Verizon iPhone back in early February. That version of the app is no longer available, and has been replaced by this more universal edition.
At $2.99 per month, many iPhone 4 users who might balk at the monthly expense of the AT&T Navigator app may be willing to give TeleNav GPS a try. The app supports both English and Spanish language directions.
Update: TeleNav noted that despite the fact that the App Store listing shows iPad 2 with 3G compatibility, the app was not designed for use with the iPad 2. We have removed references to the iPad 2 in this post.

Переслать - Rumor: Steam looking at iOS integration
This is interesting -- according to a Steam user who got to Valve headquarters in Washington, the popular game network may be looking at extending itself out onto the iOS platform. That doesn't necessarily mean that there would be a straight-up Steam client for the iPhone and the iPad (although how awesome would that be?) but rather, it sounds like Steam is looking at integrating either its social networking or achievement integration features out towards Apple's platform, in the form of an app or something else.
Whatever they're working on we can't wait to see it. Steam coming to Mac OS was a huge boon for Mac gaming, and the success of iOS was, I believe, a major reason that happened in the first place. Whatever Valve wants to do on iOS, there's no doubt it'll big a big bonus for customers.

Переслать - How the iPhone led to T-Mobile USA's sale to AT&T
By now, just about anyone who hasn't been hiding under the proverbial rock for the last three days knows that AT&T is planning on purchasing T-Mobile USA for $39 billion, pending regulatory approval. What you may not know is that a lot of what led to the sale of T-Mobile to AT&T was nothing less than Apple's iPhone.
T-Mobile USA is the American arm of Deutsche Telekom, the large German-based telecommunications company headquartered in Bonn. According to an article on the New York Times Dealbook page yesterday, the iPhone may be one of the main reasons that Deutsche Telekom agreed to make the sale of their U.S. properties to AT&T.
Until the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 on the AT&T network, T-Mobile USA was a solid performing business unit in Deutsche Telekom's worldwide holdings. After the iPhone came out, however, T-Mobile USA began losing lucrative contract customers to AT&T. The article notes that in 2010 alone, T-Mobile USA lost 390,000 customers to AT&T and Verizon, both of which now sell the iPhone.
Theo Kitz, a market analyst at the Merck Finck private bank in Munich, noted that "Without being able to sell the iPhone, T-Mobile was in an unsustainable position and T-Mobile USA became a problem child." We reported in late 2010 that Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann had blamed T-Mobile USA's lack of the iPhone for their fourth-place spot in the American mobile carrier race.
It is comforting to know, however, that all of those T-Mobile USA customers who will be moving to AT&T will have the opportunity to move to an AT&T iPhone when the purchase is complete.

Переслать - Sparrow 1.1 lands in the Mac App Store
The eagerly-awaited 1.1 update to the Sparrow email app US$9.99) has landed in the Mac App Store, adding the promised features and bug fixes.
The app now supports general IMAP, so for those of you who were waiting to add Yahoo, AOL, or MobileMe accounts to Sparrow and totally ditch Mail.app, you can now do so. For the many Mac users who use the app to access your Gmail accounts, Priority Inbox is now integrated into the app.
My personal favorite new feature is a dedicated view for browsing your unread email. Simply choosing "unread" from a tiny popup at the top of the inbox displays only your unread messages. There's also an unobtrusive formatting bar for messages so you're free to change the font, style, size, color, alignment, and indention, or even add a bullet list in the compose window.
One thing that made me surprisingly happy was the new three finger swipe multitouch gesture for showing or hiding the preview pane. On an 11.6" MacBook Air, it's nice to be able to minimize the real estate taken up by the Sparrow window.
If you've created contact groups in the Mac OS X Address Book, Sparrow 1.1 now supports using those groups for doing mass mailings to a team. The Sparrow team also fixed a long list of bugs in the initial versions, improved sync with Address Book, and improvements to the mail database, scroll performance, and memory use. The update takes little or no time to install through the Mac App Store, and for existing Sparrow users, it's a solid and welcome update.

Переслать - Angry Birds Rio out now on iPhone, iPad, Mac
The movie tie-in game for Angry Birds, called Angry Birds Rio, is now available on the iOS App Store for 99 cents on iPhone, $2.99 on the iPad, and $4.99 on the Mac App Store. The game features 60 new levels of the popular bird-throwing game, stars two characters from the upcoming movie Rio, and features full Game Center integration with all new achievements, as well as "a spectacular boss fight" of some kind. In short, if you like Angry Birds, you'll enjoy this one as well.
The game unfortunately does contain those ads that had some feathers ruffled in the original version, but the ratings on iTunes haven't suffered very much. And the description on the iOS store does promise updates "throughout 2011," so there's more content to come.
In case you don't want to spend the buck just yet, there's also free versions for both platforms that have six levels to check out. But it's Angry Birds -- while it looks from the screenshot like you're busting birds out of cages rather than attacking pigs, the catapult physics gameplay is still the main focus.

Переслать - PDF Expert for iPad offers cloud storage, editing, more
When the iPad was young, many wondered about its potential as an e-reader. Comparisons to the Kindle, while not entirely fair (they're different devices, each with a unique purpose) were inevitable. Today, a year into the grand experiment that is the iPad, reader apps abound. Books for kids and adults, as well as Apple's own iBooks app, fill the store. When it comes to reading PDFs, however, my choice is PDF Expert (US$9.99).
This app features a slew of PDF editing options, generous cloud storage options, a smart "recents" feature, bookmarks, signature support and more. Here's my look at PDF Expert from Readdle.

Переслать - ForeverMap handy but a bit rough
ForeverMap brings maps of every location in North America to your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. The US $0.99 app lets you decide which maps you want, such as a state, a whole country or a province, and download what you need. Maps can be downloaded through iTunes or on WiFi, but not on 3G. You can delete, or add more maps as you wish, the only limitation being storage on your iDevice.
The maps are sourced from OpenStreetMaps.org. The advantage of the app is you have the maps with you without any data connection needed. You can plan a route, find a nearby restaurant or museum, or find an address without ever being connected to the Internet.
The routes you plan can be for walking or driving, but the app does not give you turn by turn directions. It will show you as a moving icon on the map if your device has GPS. There is a bookmark function, and filters so you can select what you are looking for that might be nearby.

Переслать - Flow now available, keeps your tasks beautifully in sync
Flow, the long-awaited task management system by Metalab, is finally slipping out of beta today and opening its doors to the public.
First and foremost, Flow is a web app that many will find very similar to MobileMe in aesthetics. Through this interface, one can add and manage tasks through projects or even delegate tasks to other Flow users (a handy feature for teams). The real killer feature we're seeing with Flow, however, is the cloud-based architecture. Combined with Metalabs' new Flow app for iPhone and their Mac companion app, it's a pretty great way to keep things in sync.
Flow has a 14-day free trial, which I highly recommend trying out. Beyond this time frame, Flow has a monthly cost of $9.99. Metalab is also offering a yearly subscription for the very MobileMe-esque price of $99.

Переслать - What does the AT&T deal for T-Mobile USA mean for Apple?
AT&T confirmed on Sunday that it plans to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telecom. T-Mobile USA will operate as a separate brand until the deal is approved. If approved, this deal would bump AT&T up to 130 million subscribers and make it the nation's largest wireless operator. Though it is not directly involved in this merger, GigaOm suggests that Apple stands to benefit from the union of these two wireless carriers.
This new relationship will improve the performance of the current iPhone on AT&T's network. AT&T has been long maligned for its less-than-stellar network quality, a situation it has been trying to remedy by building out its network and increasing backhaul capacity.
AT&T's network will get a big boost from T-Mobile's cell towers which will be folded into AT&T's cellular grid. These extra towers will extend coverage and provide additional network capacity, especially in the data hungry metropolitan areas. Both San Francisco and Chicago will see a 25% to 45% increase in cell sites as a result of this merger.
In the future, the Cupertino company is expected to continue to sell the iPhone and the iPad on AT&T. When this merger is approved within the next 12 months, AT&T will gradually move T-Mobile customers from the 3G 1700/2100 MHz AWS band to AT&T's 1900 MHz band. AT&T plans to use this vacated AWS spectrum for its LTE network. Once the migration is over, Apple will be able to tap T-Mobile's 35 million customers. This migration is at least a year away, so any boost in sales won't occur until the iPhone 6 or beyond.

Переслать - iPhone 5 rumors: new antenna, metal case
Trial production for the iPhone 5 has already started in China, according to speculation from The China Times published on Tuesday. According to the report, Apple's fifth-generation smartphone, expected to launch during the third quarter this year, will feature a metal chassis, more sensitive antennae design, dual-core A5 processor, 5-megapixel still camera, 4-inch, scratch-resistant touch screen, and near-field communication (NFC) technology.
The China Times report reiterates many popular rumors about Apple's next generation iPhone. Despite ditching the current iPhone's glass backing in favor of a metal chassis, The iPhone 5 is expected to maintain many of the design sensibilities of its predecessor while evolving the device's underlying technology. At the center of the fifth-generation iPhone sits Apple's potent, dual-core A5 processor, likely to double the iPhone 5's performance. To address perceived issues with signal attenuation in the iPhone 4, the iPhone 5 includes a re-designed, more sensitive antenna. Apple also reportedly crammed a larger, 4-inch display into the iPhone 5 which stretches closer to the edges of the device's face without changing its overall shape or size.
The China Times report [translation] also claims Apple will include an NFC chip in each iPhone 5. NFC technology would allow users to associate financial data with their devices to enable a rapid, wireless payment solution that could one day replace plastic credit cards. Previous rumors have gone back and forth about Apple's plans to include NFC chips in the iPhone 5. If included, the chips are likely to be provided by Qualcomm, according to Boy Genius Report.

Переслать - Tiny Wings theme song now available as free download
As we reviewed in late February, Tiny Wings is an addictive game from the moment you first launch it. For a tiny app, it's powerful enough to knock the mighty Angry Birds off its perch atop the paid app list in the App Store. As of early this morning, Tiny Wings still enjoyed the top spot.
And like many addictive games, you've probably found yourself humming the catchy theme over and over as well. Creator Andreas Illiger is generous enough to provide the Tiny Wings theme as a free MP3 download through his site. Even though it's free, Illiger asks downloaders to respect his copyright and not use the music in commercial works.

Переслать - CRU-DataPort's ToughTech Duo QR: RAID for the road
I recently reviewed the WiebeTech RTX220-QR RAID array, which I found to be a fast and rock-solid array that would be great for office use. After returning the drive to WiebeTech, I was contacted by the company about a new array that could provide the same speedy RAID features in a much more portable format. That array, from WiebeTech's parent company CRU-DataPort, is called the ToughTech Duo QR, and it uses two 2.5" notebook hard drives in a solid aluminum shell in either a RAID 0 (striped) or RAID 1 (mirrored) configuration.
Like its big brother the RTX220-QR, the ToughTech Duo QR is built to take a beating. The array isn't exactly lightweight at 1 lb., 12 oz., but it is tiny enough to fit in a briefcase or backpack for travel. How tiny? The array is 3.5" deep by 6.26" wide by 1.34" high. Inside the box are two 2.5" notebook drives (in this case, two 750 GB 7200 RPM drives) that are in easily removable trays. There's a small metal plastic stand included for holding the array vertically next to a computer.
No tools are required to remove the drives, and the company provides succinct instructions on the packaging about how to use this feature to create an offsite backup disk using RAID 1. You just power down the drive, pop open the drive tray, take one drive out and replace it with another identical drive, then close the tray, power back up, and rebuild the RAID array. Stash the removed drive in a safe place, and you still have a mirrored 750 GB drive that you can carry with you.

Переслать - Warren Buffett hesitant on Apple, tech companies
Multi-billionaire investor Warren Buffett says he still has no plans to invest in technology companies, including Apple, preferring to stick with companies like Coca-Cola because it is "very easy for me to come to a conclusion as to what it will look like economically in five or 10 years, and it's not easy for me to come to a conclusion about Apple."
Buffett's latest comments came at the opening of a new cutting tools factory in Daegu, South Korea, in which his investment company Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has a share. Even though he's a long-time friend of Microsoft founder Bill Gates -- the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation receives around $1.5 billion a year from Buffett -- the 80-year-old investor has never been comfortable with technology companies.
He says that, although recent events in Japan mean that technology stocks are depressed and therefore a good buy at the moment, he's sticking with what he knows. In fact, it's only within about the past five years that Apple stocks have out-performed those of Coca-Cola. Hindsight shows that a switch to Apple from Coke five years ago would have made Buffett a much richer man, but with around $50 billion to his name, his foresight seems to work pretty well.
While Apple's stock has gone up like a rocket in the past five years, Coca-Cola's has remained fairly stable -- and in the previous five years, Apple's stock was in the doldrums in comparison, and Buffett's choice looked wise.
And now, it turns out, even Bill Gates is investing in Coca-Cola via its Mexican bottler Femsa.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Buddy Rush
Buddy Rush is an interesting entry to the App Store that's done very well on the Top Paid charts with its microtransaction-based business model. Basically, it's a Diablo-style dungeon crawler, though it's much cuter and more kid-friendly than most hack-and-slash games. It's also a full action RPG, with loot, experience, classes and everything else. The twist here is that it's social. You log in to Facebook when you start off, and you "play" with your friends. They're represented in game by NPCs, but they get rewards when you play with their characters and vice versa.
It's a very interesting concept, and considering that even the text in the game is super kid-friendly, it's a weird genre mix that really appeals to an audience that's hooked right into online social networks. As I said, you must log in to Facebook to play the game, which may be a problem if you're careful about your online identity -- the app requires permission to access your friends and wall online. But for players who are already connected and aren't worried about a few extra wall posts promoting a game they like, it won't be an issue.
The model's also out of the ordinary. You can buy in-game currency with in-app purchases to open up things, like extra character slots and extra items. None of it's really required, which is the right way to do it for a game like this, but since Buddy Rush is sitting on the Top Paid list on the App Store, somebody's definitely putting some money into this one.
In short, Buddy Rush is an interesting experiment that appears to be working. The game is free on the App Store, and it was recently updated for the iPad as well. This is far from the last we'll see of this game and its kind -- my feeling is that social, connected, casual games like this across many genres are only going to get more popular.

Переслать - Modding the iPad 1 to work with the Smart Cover
If you saw the Smart Cover during that announcement a while back and have really wanted to use it with your iPad 1 instead of buying a whole new iPad 2, you may be in luck. One enterprising blogger named Dan Provost agreed with you, and he found that if you super glue a few rare-earth magnets to the side of the iPad 1, the Smart Cover can fit quite nicely right along it. It's a little hacky (depending on whether you mind having a few magnets super glued to a device as slick as the iPad or not), but since we know the Smart Cover is really just magnets and fabric, it should work great.
Of course, if you don't want to go that route, there are cases for the iPad that will happily do what the Smart Cover does without requiring you to do any gluing. But if you want Apple's solution for the second iPad to work with your beloved first version, this might be just what you're looking for.

Переслать - Apple sues Amazon over 'App Store'
On March 18, Apple filed a complaint against Amazon in California over Amazon's use of "App Store," a trademark owned by Apple. According to Bloomberg, Apple has asked the court to bar Amazon from using the "App Store" name in its Android software development program and upcoming Android application store, titled the Amazon Appstore.
In related trademark bickering, Microsoft filed an objection in court earlier this year in hopes of denying Apple the trademark for "App Store," arguing that the term is generic enough to apply to any digital store that sells applications. Apple quickly struck back, pointing out Microsoft's trademark on the generic term "Windows."
As for Apple's suit against Amazon, the claim stated that "Amazon has unlawfully used the App Store mark to solicit software developers throughout the United States." Apple reportedly tried contacting Amazon three times about the use of its trademark since the beginning of the year, but Amazon has yet to "provide a substantive response."

Переслать - How to transfer game saves between iOS devices, without iTunes, and without jailbreaking
If you own multiple iOS devices, you may have noticed that syncing game saves between them is nowhere near as easy as syncing other types of data. In fact, most people probably don't even know that it's possible to sync game saves between devices.
This isn't a big deal for most casual-type iOS games, but some games, like Infinity Blade or Chaos Rings, provide epic play lengths that represent hours upon hours of time invested. Why should you start over from scratch just because you bought a shiny new iPad 2, but all your game saves are on your iPhone 4? Apple does let you restore backup info from one device to another, but if you'd rather set up your iPad 2 as a new device, there's no Apple-sanctioned means of transferring your save data afterward.
Phone Disk comes to the rescue. We covered Phone Disk last November, when it was temporarily available for free, but it now costs US$19.95 for a single-user license. If you want Finder-level access to your iDevice's media files and third-party apps without having to jailbreak, it may well be worth the cost, especially since with a little bit of poking around you'll be able to locate your game saves and transfer them between devices using the Finder in Mac OS X.

Переслать - International iPad 2 launch still on track
Apple has confirmed that the iPad 2 launch in the UK is still planned for this Friday, March 25, according to TechRadar. There was concern that the launch would be delayed due to supply issues, but an Apple spokesperson apparently says that the company is still following the date listed on the website, which means the UK will get iPad 2 on Friday afternoon. The launch has definitely been delayed in Japan due to the Sendai earthquake and its consequences, but supposedly (according to an Apple Store employee), it's on everywhere else, including Canada.
If you are trying to get an iPad 2 somewhere in the world this weekend, be warned that the international launch will probably suffer from the same issues that the US launch did, with long lines, long waits and not a lot of solid information to go around.
Update: We've heard from sources connected to Apple's sales operations that there is no way iPad 2 inventories can be effectively shifted from one country to another; each country's product is unique in terms of regulatory certification and the back cover part, so once it's built for a place, that's the only place it's going to be sold. If manufacturing was going to be adjusted to shift the balance of iPad 2 production in favor of US models, that call would have needed to happen several weeks ago -- before the US rollout and corresponding availability crunch.
But aside from all of that trouble, here's hoping you get the iPad 2 you're looking for. Good luck!

Переслать - China grants Apple 11 patents covering iPhone 4
Apple has just been granted 11 patents in China on the iPhone 4, according to Patently Apple, and there are some interesting potential consequences for future iPhone design, the site says.
The 11 patents are each for slightly varying designs, which could, say Patently Apple, help strengthen rumors that the next iPhone will have a metal back. One patent emphasizes the iPhone 4's stainless steel band, for example, while others cover the glass cover, button positions and more.
This means that if the next iPhone does sport a metal back, any new patents would only have to be updated for the new materials, rather than be redone for the whole new piece of hardware. That saves time and money later on, and right now it means that Apple is ready to make changes to the iPhone's design if needed.
The patents were filed in China late last year and finally granted this past week.

Переслать - Apple approves "gay cure" app, then removes it on 3/22
Update: The app has been removed from the store as of 3/22, per CoM.
Today, everyone has their knickers in a twist over yet another controversial app that Apple allowed into the App Store. According to the Register, an application that helps customers discover "freedom from homosexuality" can be purchased from Apple's iTunes-based store. Activist organization Truth Wins Out has a petition asking Apple to remove the app.
Rather than to go into details or express any opinions, TUAW prefers to point back to TJ Luoma's excellent post from a few months ago that says everything there really needs to be said on the topic.
TUAW contacted Apple for a statement and will update the post in the event that we receive a reply.
Please feel free to discuss Apple, censorship, and App Store in the comment thread for this post. Posts that discuss other posters, the morality of the application in question, or any issues of lifestyle choice or biological imperative may result in your comments being deleted and you being banned from this site.
