  • Mac sales growth continues to surge ahead of PCs 3 to 1
In a pattern that has become very familiar to watchers of the computer market in the last few years, sales of Macs have grown at three times the rate of computers powered by other operating systems. According to a report issued by IDC, Apple computer sales jumped 28.5 percent in the July-September 2010 quarter compared to the same period in 2009. Sales of other personal computers only grew by 9.7% in the same period.

The single biggest jump in sales has come from the business market, which is up by 66.3%. Among large and very large businesses, sales spiked 146% and 202% respectively, which is an excellent sign for Apple. Those large businesses tend to be controlled by large IT departments, which are typically very conservative when it comes to computer system upgrades and replacements. The popularity of iOS devices among executives and the more tech savvy is probably playing a big part in convincing these companies to take another look at Apple on the desktop.

According to IDC's estimates of average selling prices, Apple is also now the dollar market share leader in the U.S. home market with 29.4% of all the dollars spent on computers in the period. However, this figure is open to debate based on IDC estimating a higher average transaction price than Apple's own results. Regardless of which revenue estimate is correct, it's clear that Apple is gaining a lot traction in every market except education where PCs outpaced Macs by 11.4% to 5.1%. Apple still has plenty of room to grow however, with only 4.36% of the global computer market.

  • Hands on: AirPlay for audio streaming in depth

My colleague Mike Rose has already taken a long look at video streaming via AirPlay and found it a rather mixed bag. Although it works well as far as it goes, it doesn't support non-Apple apps -- even video streaming ones such as Netflix -- and can't even manage to stream video footage shot on an iPhone from the iPhone to an Apple TV. Meanwhile, Victor Agreda wasn't at all impressed that AirPlay doesn't offer the ability to stream his iTunes library to an iOS device.

However, as someone who owns two Airport Express units and zero Apple TVs, I was more interested from the original announcement in September in audio streaming. So as soon as iOS 4.2.1 hit this was the feature I first turned to and tested out. Here are my findings of what it does, what works well, and what doesn't.

  • TuneLink Auto Bluetooth-to-FM transmitter for iOS 4 devices
    TuneLink Auto
Up until just a few months ago, I had always used an FM transmitter like this Belkin one to play my iPhone through my car stereo. It was unwieldy and it made my Apple Lossless-encoded music sound like garbage, but at least it (kinda) worked for those long trips. If you are still using transmitters but are looking for a wireless solution in your car, Engadget has the scoop on the new TuneLink Auto from New Potato Technologies. It plugs directly into your cigarette lighter and provides a Bluetooth audio link between your iOS 4.0 or higher iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and then transmits it to your radio via the FM station of your choosing. This way, once you pick your music or start the iPhone NPR stream during your morning commute you can put it anywhere in the car and not have wires dangling all over the place. The front of the device even has a USB port that can charge any electronics you may have taken with you.

The TuneLink Auto is controlled by a free app you have to download from the App Store. According to New Potato, using the device is as easy as "PLUG IT, PAIR IT, PLAY IT, SHARE IT!" and is available now for US $99.99. If it works better than the FM transmitters I used for all those years, it may be worth the money. But if you have the option I would definitely go with a wired connection of some sort, as the purpose of having your music in the car is to enjoy it -- not to constantly be changing stations and adjusting wires just to hear it at all.

  • iPhone demand in China still exceeds supply
We've heard some crazy stories out of China about the call for Apple products there, both that Apple is trying to increase supply as quickly as possible, and that they're still not living up to the demand. And here's more news that Apple is racing, and probably failing, to keep up with all of the demand there. China Unicom says that Apple is still falling short of orders in that country. So far, 600,000 iPhone 4s have been ordered, but there's no word on how many of those have been delivered yet.

Hong Kong's Telstra also says demand is high there, and that company says that it too has had trouble keeping up supply under all the demand.

This is both good and bad news for Apple -- China has already been identified in the past as one of the company's biggest possible markets in the future, and it's great to hear that the expectations of demand are being matched, if not exceeded. On the other hand, it's never good to leave money on the table, and if Apple can't take advantage of all of this demand, it'll be doing just that.

  • Hands on: iPad printing with 4.2 and AirPrint, a limited menu

If AirPlay's first-generation limitations have disappointed a lot of would-be iPhone video mavens who had dreamed of quickly sharing their clips to the big screen, you can just imagine how irate everyone is about AirPrint.

The universal shared printer solution for iPhone and iPad was kneecapped in late builds of Mac OS X 10.6.5 for reasons yet to be revealed, and the result is that a big-ticket feature has shipped with very little real-world applicability -- at least, out of the box.

Fortunately, if you're willing to do a little bit of finagling or lay out a small amount of cash, you can quickly gain back the AirPrint functionality you were promised, and more. Let's take a quick look at what's in the 'vanilla' version of AirPrint, then move on to the expanded remix edition.

  • Phil Schiller's Twitter account gets verified

Apple's Phil Schiller has joined Scott Forstall (though not Steve Jobs) over on Twitter -- he now has a verified account to tweet from, and is following a few celebrity and official company accounts so far. The account's actually been around for a while (Schiller tweeted from France while there and mentioned 500 million app downloads when it was announced last January), but only recently got verified, which means there's one more official Apple voice on the networking service.

It's strange that Apple still doesn't have a real official presence on Twitter -- Schiller follows an account called @AppleIncNews, but it appears to be a simple RSS feed of Apple website news, and it's not verified by Twitter as official at all. There are certainly plenty of fake Steve Jobs accounts, but none of those have been verified either. Especially since Steve seems so easygoing with his Stevemails, you think Twitter would be a perfect place for him to interface directly with the Apple community.

But so far, all we've got is Forstall and Schiller, and neither of them seem very forthcoming about interacting with the community of Apple fans online.

  • Oprah studio guests scream for free iPads, her "favorite thing ever"
Oprah Favorite Things iPadDo I now have to buy an iPad to give to all my Oprah Winfrey-watching relatives for Christmas? Oprah just helped Apple boost their 2010 iPad sales figures even higher by featuring it on her "Favorite Things" episode on Monday. Oprah has aired this segment each year since 2002 and in the past has given her readers cars, trips, electronics, jewelry and clothing. While Oprah has picked the iPod 5G for inclusion on her favorite things list in the past, this year the iPad was chosen as her most favorite thing, and all 275 studio guests received one. Calling the iPad her "number one favorite thing ever," Oprah said that from "our very first moment together I knew it had stolen my heart."

The audience was pretty excited about the freebie but seemed to be a little more excited (and rightly so) about the 2012 VW Beetle they also received. I wonder if they know they have to pay the taxes on that "free" car? Update: Seems VW is paying the taxes on the cars. (Thanks @Doug)

Studio guests this year also received a five-year subscription to Netflix, a 52-inch Sony Bravia 3D television, and a Nikon D3100 digital camera. Click Read More to watch video of the audience screaming when they find out about the iPads.

  • Beatles sell 2 million tracks via iTunes already

Has it really been only a week since the day we would never forget? In that short amount of time, Apple has sold 2 million Beatles tracks and generated 45,000 album downloads via iTunes, Billboard magazine said today.

Not bad for a band that was pretty late to the digital music game -- and one that a good bit of commenters decried wouldn't do much for sales at all.

The top-selling album was 1969's Abbey Road. The top-selling track is "Here Comes the Sun" from the same album.

  • OpenFeint has doubled community since Game Center's launch
When Game Center was first announced way back in April, the first question everyone had was about all of the third-party networks that had already built up in the space. OpenFeint was the biggest of these, and founder Jason Citron had no apparent worries about Apple's advance into social gaming -- he said that OpenFeint would continue to offer features beyond what Game Center did, and that developers would be easily able to use both networks in their apps. A report released last week by OpenFeint says that's exactly what's happened -- the userbase has doubled to a whopping 50 million users since Game Center launched, and games on the network have also increased 119% since Game Center was announced.

Those are pretty amazing numbers -- there was a lot of talk earlier this year that Apple would walk into this space and just dominate (and certainly, I've seen a lot of solid Game Center integration since release, and of course because Game Center is automatically installed in iOS, adoption is probably huge), but that hasn't been the case at all. There's definitely room for services like Plus+ and OpenFeint, even with an official network up and running. OpenFeint, as far as I've been told, is also still planning the OpenFeint X service, with more options for in-game microtransactions, so we'll have to see what they're up to next.

  • TiVo announces iPad app to control TiVo box
If you're like most iPad users, then you probably surf the web and check out IMDB with your iPad while watching anything that might be showing on the television. TiVo knows this, embraces this, and wishes to support this. They want to make the experience between your television and your iPad even closer.

TiVo announced Monday a new, upcoming iPad app that will let you use many features of the TiVo service all on your iPad, without ever interrupting what's happening on your larger television screen.

The TiVo iPad application will allow you to browse TiVo's program guide, schedule recordings, remotely control your TiVo unit, and browse your library of recorded shows. Additionally, the app will search both broadcast TV and premium services like Netflix, let you check out the cast and crew information of any shows you're watching, as well as schedule shows to be recorded while you're on the road.

Upcoming does mean that it's not out yet, but TiVo says we'll be notified in the customer newsletter as soon as the app is available. It will be interesting to get our hands on the TiVo app since it really could open up a lot of powerful features.

  • Field of Glory, Civ 5 out for OS X
Here's two good strategy game releases for Mac OS X this week (in case you want to spend a little time away from the family after the turkey's carved and eaten). First up, Freeverse has released a game called Field of Glory -- it's a turn-based hex strategy game that's originally based on a tabletop title and has you fighting medieval Roman warfare across single player and multiplayer as well as a number of different scenarios and setups. The game is US $39.95, and includes three expansion packs from the PC version, all ready to go right away.

But as cool as that sounds, here's the real hex-based strategy game you're waiting for: Civ 5 is out now for the Mac. And it's available on Steam under the SteamPlay banner, which means for $50, you get both the Mac and Windows versions, digitally delivered to whatever computer you'd like. If you've ever played any Civ game, you know this series is the pinnacle of strategy titles, and the new version not only adds hexes to the mix, but revolutionizes battle (no more stacks of doom) and streamlines city defense as well. I love Civ, and having it available in this way is something to be very thankful for.

  • Why I'm skipping AirPlay
It's pretty simple: I want to stream music from my Mac to my iPad or iPhone. Why? Because I sometimes connect one of those iOS devices to a home stereo. Those devices do not contain my entire iTunes library. Unfortunately, AirPlay won't let me stream my iTunes library to my iOS devices. Thus, I'm not able to use AirPlay in my home.

I don't own an Apple TV. The Airport Express I have is an older model that causes my Airport Extreme Base Station to freak out, requiring frequent reboots of either device, often randomly, never at a good moment. Yet, with all the awesomeness of AirPlay, I cannot do one simple thing: play music (or anything else) from my $2,000+ MacBook Pro to my iPad. Instead, Apple wants me to pony up another $99 for an Apple TV -- a device I simply don't need right now.

I'm not sure why this is so. There is a 3rd party application on the store right now that will do this called AirVideo. In fact, true to its name, it'll stream more than music. I used to use Airfoil to do this from Mac to Mac and from Mac to iPhone. Why this seemingly simple use case is hobbled by Apple's design is beyond me. It's such a puzzler that I wrote Steve Jobs an email about it. Naturally, I have yet to hear from him.

So I'm throwing it open to the audience: would you also like to stream music or photos or movies from your Mac to your iDevice?

  • Great GPS navigation deals for holiday travelers

As the holidays approach we're seeing some very tempting prices on navigation apps for the iPhone. Here are some deals worth considering if you've been waiting for price drops.

My favorite app, from Navigon is on sale Black Friday only. The USA version drops to $29.99 from the regular $49.99. The MyRegion versions, giving you a choice of the US East or West Coast, or the central states drops $10.00 to $19.99. I've consistently recommended the Navigon app because of it's many features, excellent voice directions, and easy GUI.

I'd also point our readers to the CoPilot Live app which is on sale this week only. The North American version, which contains maps of both the US and Canada is now $9.99. A high resolution version for the iPad is now on sale for $19.99. Those prices are 50% off the regular cost. If you'd like to see what CoPilot Live can do, watch this video demo.

We've already reported that the Magellan Roadmate app is also on sale for $34.99 until December 1, so no more excuses and stop getting lost on those road trips.

You had to see this coming. Rovio is reportedly prepping a Christmas-themed update to the ridiculously popular Angry Birds game for iOS. Finnish TV site MTV3 has the scoop (English translation) with a screenshot showing snow-bound pigs about to receive the wrath of flying snowballs.

MTV3 suggests that the game will be out "before December." You'll remember Rovio recently shipped a Halloween version of the app for $0.99. Expect the yule version to cost the same.

  • Use Dropbox to backup a few folders every day
i have always been a security / backup freak

There's a nice little tutorial on Justin Schwalbe's blog for using a simple script to backup a few folders to a Dropbox backup folder every day. Why would you do this? Well, let's say you aren't always able to connect to a hard drive for Time Machine, but you have a couple of document folders you want to make sure are backed up off site every day. If you are traveling but have internet access, this script plus Dropbox will save your bacon -- or your files, at least.

Note that you should be comfortable with bash scripting to successfully implement this backup solution. You can, of course, also keep folders in Dropbox itself, but Justin's scripted method allows incremental backups that keep versions from a few days back, so (sort of like Time Machine), if you find yourself needing a file from two days ago versus five minutes ago, you'll have that in a dedicated folder based on the date.

If you're not comfortable with Terminal or scripting, consider carrying a USB drive with you and relying upon Time Machine, Apple's built-in backup solution.

Update: As noted by Justin in the comments, this creates encrypted disk images. Also, Dropbox does have versioning that goes back 30 days, available on the Dropbox site.

  • Foxconn expands iPad production to second plant according to report
If a report from Digitimes is to be believed, Foxconn is adding iPad production at a second factory in Chengdu, China to help meet demand for the Apple tablet. Since it launched last spring, Foxconn has been producing iPads only at its plant in Shenzhen which has a capacity of about 2.5 million units a month. Shenzhen is expected to ship about 7 million units in the October-December quarter bringing total 2010 shipments to 15 million units.

While Foxconn has not announced any production increases, Digitimes claims that component suppliers have reported that Foxconn began shipping iPads from Chengdu earlier this month. Digitimes is claiming that Foxconn will put in 50 assembly lines at Chengdu bringing total iPad capacity to 40 million units annually, although it's not clear if that number is the combined output of the two factories or just units from the new factory.

It's worth keeping in mind that while Digitimes does sometimes break real news, it has a spotty record when it comes to accuracy. However, if the iPad follows the pattern of the iPod and iPhone before it, sales of the iPad could really explode when the second generation model arrives sometime next spring. The probable addition of "missing" features like cameras for FaceTime could push the iPad to a whole new level.

  • Tether your iPhone with the Nexaria BC2 router

The Nexaria BC2 router is a rather ugly 802.11b/g/n router that will allow tethering on the iPhone 3, 3GS and 4. Unfortunately, you must plug the thing into an outlet to power it up, providing somewhat limited use. Typical use case for tethering is using your phone as a modem and connecting to your Mac on the go. Here, you are chained to your desk. But if you're willing to uglify your work space, the router will grab that bandwidth from your iPhone (using your data allotment from AT&T) and beam it around your room via Wi-Fi for the low price of $189. Ideal? Hardly, but it works for what it does.

  • New birthday icon for Calendar in iOS 4.2

The release of iOS 4.2 has brought us a nice little surprise in the form of the new icon shown in this post. If you're tracking birthdays in your Contacts application, those birthdays will appear in your iCal calendar with a little gift package icon. It's a nice little touch to the friendly organizer application, and helps you visually spot that special day for your loved ones.

No one's made a big deal about this being a new feature in iOS 4.2, of course, since it's such a small detail (much as the new Voice Memos icon is a small detail). But for those of us who rank reaching out to loved ones to say "Happy Birthday" as a priority in our to-do list, this little touch might be a favorite change in iOS 4.2.

In order to set up this functionality, pull up the Contacts record for the person whose birthday you want to track. Select Edit in the upper right hand corner, scroll to the bottom, and tap "add field." Then enter the birthday, and the date will show up in your calendar app.

Updated to correct iCal/Calendar app mixup.

Thanks to Ryan for the tip!

  • Easily fix "vanishing" iPhone music in iOS 4.2.1
Some iPhone users are reporting that their iPhones are unable to play music after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1. Fortunately, the fix is simple (for most). In fact, all you must do is re-sync your iPhone.

If you receive a message that the iPod app is unable to play your music after updating (you'll see a message that says something like, "There is no content on this device"), just connect it to your Mac and sync with iTunes as usual. Yes, that's it.

There seems to be additional trouble for those who are manually managing their music. One thread poster notes that he has to launch the iPod app, play a song and then sync every time new content is added, or the problem returns.

What has your experience been? Please share a fix if you've found it and help some folks out.

  • News Corp's iPad-only publication supposedly due Dec. 9
Reuters recently reported that News Corp is working on an iPad-only publication, "The Daily," and today's rumor suggest that it will be introduced at a December 9th (or thereabouts) press event featuring Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs. It's also suspected that this event will see the introduction of the much-rumored App Store subscriptions that many publishers have been clamoring for.

Apple is supposedly developing a Newsstand app for iOS, perhaps similar to the iBookstore. If so, The Daily could be among its offerings. Rumors price The Daily at US$0.99 per week.

If there is an event scheduled with Murdoch and Jobs on the ticket, you can be sure that they'll be discussing more than a news app. We'll let you know if and when the announcement goes official, and of course will have full coverage on launch day.

  • Steve Jobs action figure no longer available
The Steve Jobs action figure has been making the rounds of the internet in the last few days. Rocking a black turtleneck, blue jeans, and an iPhone, the magical and revolutionary replication of Apple's chief honcho has been a huge hit for many fans of Apple. Unfortunately, according to M.I.C. gadget, Apple has already kindly asked M.I.C. gadget to cease the marketing and sale of the figure since they never gave any kind of permission for use of Apple's copyrights and trademarks.

Still, the figure looked like it was pretty awesome. The figure's likeness to Steve Jobs was unmistakable and the level of detail was kind of crazy. The tiny little iPhone the figure held even had the Apple logo on the back of it. The figure came with speech bubbles you could fill out yourself, empowering little Steve to say things like "Magical and Revolutionary," and "One more thing." I might quibble a tad with the use of the phrase "action figure" to describe the miniature statue, but the overall effect is awesome enough that they can call it that if they want.

While it's regrettable that the Steve Jobs action figure is no longer on the market, we can hope that Apple sees the demand for such a thing and creates their own version.

  • Apple teases Black Friday specials but don't expect much
    apple black friday 2010
Apple has sent out emails and posted a page teasing a Black Friday sale on November 26, 2010. If history is any guide the Black Friday deals at your local Apple Store won't be that spectacular. Last year's Black Friday sale consisted of MacBook Pro models reduced by $101, a slight discount on the iPod touch, the nano and Apple TV plus a decent discount on the iMac. I wouldn't expect the already low-cost new Apple TV to be discounted this year, but a push to sell new iPods would definitely make sense -- they make terrific presents. The Mac discounts will likely be there as well, although if I were to make a bet, I wouldn't bet on the Air having a discount. The iPad may see a discount, given the rumors of an update early next year, but with Oprah's recommendation and the popularity of the device who knows how deep a discount it'll be.

Will you be standing in line at your Apple Store, or will you take advantage of these bargains on the online store (or Apple Store app)?

  • New HTML5 and web standards support in iOS 4.2
Mobile Web Programming has a detailed writeup of the new HTML5 and W3C future standards support included in yesterday's iOS 4.2 release. These new APIs haven't been fully documented yet by Apple but these changes have been uncovered as part of Mobile Web Programming's own independent research. They include new standards like Accelerometer and Gyroscope support in the DeviceOrientation API, the WebSockets API that's part of HTML5, and information on how to invoke printing dialog in mobile Safari.

Some of the new functionality includes expansion of the DeviceOrientation API to include the accelerometer and gyroscope on devices that have them, so web apps can react to the device being moved around. WebSockets is a new HTML5 standard that allows developers to build even more responsive webapps (by allowing JavaScript to create raw TCP socket connections to HTTP servers), and now comes to mobile Safari for the first time.

Not only is Mobile Web Programming's information detailed and informative, the comments to the post are also fairly illuminating. There's a lot more going on in yesterday's iOS 4.2 release than a casual user might suspect, and there's a lot of great news in this release for web developers. If you have any interest in the spinning cogs and gears that make the mobile web work, it's definitely worth your time to check out this writeup. These additions help buttress the idea that Apple is committed to supporting the ongoing growth of HTML5 web standards and the importance of those open standards.

  • Redsn0w jailbreak already live for iOS 4.2.1 on all devices

As expected, that was fast. The current exploit used by jailbreaking tools greenpois0n, redsn0w and limera1n attack the iOS device's boot rom, which is outside of the bits Apple can change in software. As such it cannot be addressed without issuing new hardware, meaning that for the time being all iOS devices are capable of being jailbroken using the same method.

Our own Erica Sadun reported iffy results from an early jailbreak of a dev build of iOS 4.2 but these have been resolved and iPhone Dev Team are reporting that their redsn0w tool can now jailbreak all iOS 4.2.1 devices.

    There are some caveats, however.

Firstly, if you use the ultrasn0w tool to unlock your phone (so you can use it with any carrier), then you have two problems. One, the tool itself doesn't work on iOS4.2; two, if you allow iTunes to update to the newer versions of the baseband software in 4.2 then it might never work again on your phone. If you rely on carrier unlock, or think you might ever come to rely on it, you should always stay away from iOS updates until one of the dev teams supply a tool to create custom IPSW files. This will give your phone all the creamy goodness of 4.2.1 but keep the old, unlockable baseband software in place.

Secondly, on newer devices (specifically iPhone 4, newer model iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch 3G and beyond, and iPad) this is a so-called tethered jailbreak. This means whenever you reboot your device you have to physically have it connected to your Mac or PC with the jailbreak software running; otherwise it'll boot back up without the jailbreak in place. Obviously this can be a serious nuisance.

Expect both of these caveats to be addressed in time, although of course there is no guarantees as to when. If you are not put off, then Redmond Pie have a really nice walkthrough of the jailbreaking process.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Delta's JFK terminal goes iPad crazy

Back in the day, it was not uncommon to sit down in a booth at a diner and find a box with lists of songs that you could browse and play back through the jukebox. Fast forward to 2010, and the Delta Airlines terminal at New York City's John F. Kennedy airport. With most people carrying a jukebox in their pocket, eateries like Croque Madame have installed Apple iPads in the booths that allow travelers to place food orders, check their email or read the news while waiting for their connection.

OTG Management is installing as many as 200 iPads in the Delta JFK terminal and plans to do the same at LaGuardia soon as well. Since travelers typically have limited time before they have to catch flights, OTG isn't implementing any time limits, but hopefully they are putting some sort of anti-bacterial, anti-grease screen protectors on the tablets. Considering how many people go through major airports, using a touch-dependent device like the iPad in an area where people are eating probably isn't for the germophobic.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Astronut
You may have already heard about the Iconfactory's new game Astronut, but just in case you haven't, we'll happily be the ones to tell you. From the makers of Ramp Champ and Twitterrific comes a game that's sort of a mashup between Dizzypad, Captain Ludwig and Doodle Jump. You play a little astronaut bouncing from planet to planet and trying to make his way up the screen, all while avoiding aliens and other traps and troubles along the way. Astronut's a little more forgiving than most of the other "jump"-style games. Not only are there three sections of your heart to go through, you can pick up more hearts, shields and other items along the way. You also get a "boost" that allows you to invincibly fly past any number of bad guys or enemies (as long as you're pointed in the right direction).

As a result, the game is a whole lot of fun to play. Rather than trying to time out each jump perfectly, you constantly bounce around the map, ascending and sometimes even landing huge jumps for bonus points. There's Game Center integration in the form of leaderboards and achievements as well, so there's quite a bit of game here to play.

There are 24 levels total, and the first four are included in a free download that comes more than recommended -- it's a lot of fun. If you like it, you can buy the rest of the game for US$1.99 via an in-app purchase. The Iconfactory never disappoints when it comes to well-executed, solid designs, and Astronut is another great app in their growing library of quality App Store titles.

  • Hands on with AirPlay: iPad and Apple TV updates make a magic combination

On the topic of iPad 4.2 and Apple TV 4.1, the first version combination to support video streaming via AirPlay, we might as well get all the caveats out of the way first. Yes, you still can't push streaming audio or video from your Mac to your iPad without third-party apps. No, you can't use AirPlay to show videos from your iPhone's camera roll, and people are plenty steamed about that. It's not a codec issue, as iTunes can easily stream the same videos to the Apple TV, so most likely the iPhone 4's AirPlay implementation isn't quite fully baked yet to handle those streams.

You can't play video from most iPad apps until they're revised for iOS 4.2 (which may not be possible yet, see note below); right now it's the Video app and YouTube for videos, Photos app for picture slideshows, iTunes for streaming from your Mac. Aside from audio (supported from most applications) that's all there is. Some iPad apps (Hulu Plus, for example) may never allow AirPlay support for licensing reasons.

[Update: As noted by a commenter below, the current version of the iOS SDK does not expose the video portion of the AirPlay APIs to third parties, meaning that any app developers who are reportedly looking to implement video streaming (like Netflix) are going to have to negotiate support with Apple on a case by case basis. If the SDK is revised once the frameworks stabilize and third parties do get access to the AirPlay video streaming capabilities, that changes the landscape considerably.]

Doesn't matter. AirPlay is astonishing. In a stroke, the $99 Apple TV has been transformed from a capable but somewhat pedestrian streaming player and video rental device into a true digital hub -- the home entertainment equivalent of a Star Trek replicator. Pushing content to the Apple TV feels fundamentally different than pulling from iTunes, mostly because it's so much easier to control and switch when sitting in front of the full library.

Pushing video from the iPad to the big screen is revelatory; it looks and sounds fantastic, and knowing that I can walk into any Apple TV-equipped household and instantly show any media on my device is going to make that holiday gift list for the grandparents a lot easier.

It's true that the lack of iPhone camera roll playback is pretty surprising, and for a lot of people that potential feature was a big driver in going out and getting the Apple TV in the first place. I hope it gets corrected soon, but there's plenty more in AirPlay that's worth exploring.

Let's walk through the one-click Apple TV update process and take a look at the basic AirPlay functionality.

  • Edible iPhone birthday cake
iPhone iCakeAnd you thought that store-bought $10 cake you got for your birthday was cool. Sure to be the envy of Apple fanboys everywhere, Chris Samuels -- an independent iPhone and iPad developer -- received this detailed iPhone cake for his birthday from his wife Cath.
Everything on (and inside) the cake is edible, with the icons carefully made from frosting and food coloring. With all the work that must have gone into this cake it would almost be sad to eat it. Almost.

This certainly isn't the first Apple device made in cake form. Check out this iPhone wedding cake, these icon cupcakes and this tasty chocolate Apple I cake.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Samuels. We look forward to seeing what Cath makes for you next year. Maybe a chocolate-covered iPad? Some iChocolates? Be sure to let us know!

  • Just in time for Thanksgiving, The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks
Although the print book has been out for more than a year, The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks by Jan and Mike Berenstain (US$2.99) has just hit the App store in time for Thanksgiving. This is the tenth in the series of Bear books released by Oceanhouse Media, and it employs the same excellent engine used by all their books. Instead of having one picture per page, the engine allows for lots of panning and zooming, so one picture can be used for multiple pages. I consider this a good idea since kids like to swipe pages, and although there are only 35 pictures in the book, it will take 108 page swipes to get to the end. This cinematic approach is very appropriate for this type of book since it allows the virtual camera to uncover parts of larger graphics when they are appropriate, keeping the story and the reader's interest flowing.

The story is appropriately simple. Papa Bear bartered some furniture for a few cases of Farmer Ben's best Apple Blossom honey along with Squanto the Turkey, who will stay at the farm until fattened and ready for Thanksgiving dinner. Sister Bear becomes attached to Squanto and wants to keep him as a pet. Her wish is eventually granted via a bit of Thanksgiving magic.

  • PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit raises the bar for interactive children's books

PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit
(US$4.99) is the first of what will be a series of PopOut! books published by Loud Crow Interactive Inc. It tells the well-loved tale of naughty Peter Rabbit getting into Mr. McGregor's garden, eating his fill of all the yummy vegetables, and when he's discovered, escaping back to his family. Many of us have a warm place in our hearts for this story, having enjoyed it as children. It's an old story, dating back to 1902. The app is similar to the wonderful Alice for the iPad in both the old world look and feel and in the sheer elegance of execution.

The pages look like they were printed on old parchment, and the Beatrix Potter watercolor illustrations are both intact and improved. On most of the pages, the backgrounds, when tilting your iOS device, come alive and move. Most of them were created on two or three planes that move at different times, creating a multi-plane illusion of depth that is both gentle and effective. Most everything you touch moves, revealing hidden objects while appropriate sound effects play. A lovely touch is that the interaction often varies. For example, tapping on a bush drops a large blackberry but subsequent taps only produce berries intermittently. Tilting the device allows the berries to "roll" onto the next page, and tapping a berry itself squashes it.

Similarly, on a page with leaves, every few taps brings up a different leaf that moves. This is all done to the perfectly chosen strains of Claire de Lune by Debussy. Options are given to have the book read by a wonderfully expressive and appropriately British female voice, or you can read it yourself, keeping the music and sound effects intact. When having it read, each spoken word is highlighted for young readers. Either way, tapping on a word speaks the word; that's a nice feature that more and more interactive books have adopted.

  • Fifth Ave. Apple Store recreated in Minecraft
The Minecraft Mac was cute and all, but if you think that was the pinnacle of Mac-related creations in Minecraft, you're underestimating our readership. Reader Simon sent along this set of Flickr pictures, which shows off an entire recreation of the Fifth Avenue Apple Store, complete with glass cube on top and a store full of products down below. Unfortunately, there's no way to model out iPads or iPhones in Minecraft, so there's just a whole bunch of what looks like Mac minis on sale. But then again, that sounds like a great store, too.

Very nicely done, Simon. I'd like to know how long something like this takes -- I've built a few things in Minecraft myself, but nothing this, err, realistic, and definitely nothing of this magnitude. Awesome stuff, though -- what's next?

  • World of Goo coming to iPad, Gunstar Heroes out now
Here are two good pieces of news for iOS gamers. First up, World of Goo, the practically classic indie game that has you building little structures out of blobs of goo, is headed to the App Store just as soon as Apple approves the app for iPad. The app will feature one-screen multiplayer, with up to 11 fingers building up and drawing goo paths out on the screen. There's no iPhone version yet, but it's not outside the range of reason, as long as 2D Boy can make it run "buttery smooth."

And Sega's classic side-scroller Gunstar Heroes is now out on the iPhone as a US$2.99 app. Early word on the game is that it's an excellent port of the much-loved Genesis title. As with most ports, the controls simply consist of on-screen buttons, which can sometimes get in the way of the action. But if you're a Gunstar Heroes fan, you've probably headed over to the App Store to download the game anyway -- it's got quite a rabid following.

And finally, if you are an iOS gamer, stay tuned later on this week. I'm expecting to see some gigantic sales on the App Store for Black Friday, and we'll be covering and collecting as many of them as possible. Be sure to follow us over on Twitter as well -- sometimes we'll fit in even more quick sales over there.

  • iPads now helping food charity feed the hungry
FareShare iPad AppJust last week we wrote about iPads being given out to doctors in Australia, and now we are seeing another hospitality-based use for them -- tracking food donations and pickups for Melbourne's FareShare food charity.

An iPad app developed by volunteers and employees of FareShare acts as a data-entry point for their drivers, who enter the amount and ingredients of donated food they have collected on their routes. This information is then accessed by the chefs who can plan their meals according to what food will be arriving back at the kitchen later that day.

According to FairShare's Food Donations and Logistics Manager Chris Scott, the information "is helping our kitchen plan what to cook, and is increasing the number and diversity of meals we can make. We can also re-distribute packaged food straight to charities' doors faster than ever before." Use of their app has also streamlined the charity's record-keeping and freed up more time to work on charity-specific endeavours rather than paperwork.

FareShare runs their app on three donated iPads and hopes to receive three more to equip even more drivers with the technology. With iPads (and tablet computers in general) being deployed more and more for corporate use, it's nice to see them being used for charity work, too.

  • MacTech Boot Camp gives IT Mac mavens pre-Macworld day of workshops

Hopefully, if you're headed out to Macworld Expo next year, you've already made some hotel and air travel plans, as reservations in San Francisco are already filling up if not filled up completely. But just in case you're still planning out the trip, make sure to try and include an extra day at the beginning.

MacTech is going to be hosting a one-day boot camp for IT and tech support folks interested in learning more about how to support small home and business users. I just attended the MacTech conference a few weeks ago here in LA, and while it was definitely centered around the IT and developer side of things (or at least people who want to know more about those fields), it was also an excellent networking opportunity, offering up lots of contact with all kinds of the best folks in the industry.

The Boot Camp is taking place January 26, 2011, the day before Macworld, in San Francisco. It includes a networking lunch, along with sessions on all kinds of topics. It's probably not for everybody, but if you have an interest in the subjects covered, it'll be a really nice way to start Macworld week off right. Just be sure to get those reservations in soon -- you'll need your hotel and air covered ASAP, obviously, and reserving for the boot camp by December 15th will save you $200 (registration will be $295 instead of $495). If you're going, we'll be sure to see you there.

  • iPhone 4.2 how-to: Setting custom SMS alert tones

One of the less-heralded new features in iOS 4.2.1 for the iPhone is the addition of a slew of new SMS message tones, along with the ability to assign text tones to particular contacts. The expansion of choice is welcome, and I hate to look gift text tones in the mouth, but there are still some frustrations in the mix.

The biggest issue is that as far as we can tell, 3GS owners aren't getting the new ringtones at all; only iPhone 4 users are seeing them. It's not clear yet if this is permanent or temporary.

Even if you have the new tones, what you see is what you get; you still can't add your own custom SMS tones without jailbreaking. For another thing, as Chris Rawson pointed out last week, these new SMS alerts are mostly freakishly long -- who has time to wait for 10 seconds of music whenever they get a text? It is a puzzlement.

Update: Reader Peter Park, a database admin by trade, wrote in to say how much he appreciates the longer alert tones -- when you're depending on an SMS message to wake you up in the middle of the night when a server is offline, you want to make sure you hear it. Point taken!

You may find one of the new SMS tones to your liking; for my money, most of them sound like they might have been recorded between takes on the Looney Tunes scoring stage, although "Anticipate" is a dead ringer for the Stair Dismount music sting. The only one that I feel like I might be able to stick with for a while is "Noir," which is short enough not to drive me bonkers.

Whether you stick with the classic alerts or dip into the new and "improved" ones, you can still have some fun assigning specific tones to particular people -- very handy if you want to make sure that your spouse or your boss always get your attention in a hurry. Read on for the simple steps needed to set this up.

  • iPads at TJ Maxx were bought at retail

Just in case you missed it, here's a resolution to the whole question of where those iPads at TJ Maxx came from. A high tech tablet isn't really the usual fare for the discount clothing retailer, and Steve Jobs himself confirmed that the chain wasn't an "authorized reseller" of Apple's magical, revolutionary device. But TJ Maxx says in an official statement that it has its ways: "Earlier this week, a small number of T.J.Maxx and Marshalls stores received a very limited quantity of first quality electronic tablets that were sourced from a retailer," the chain tells Fortune.

In short, they bought the iPads from someone who was authorized to sell them, and then resold them (losing about $100 off of the standard retail price) to whoever came in the store and found them.

Why? The "coming in the store" part was the important one -- for around $8000, according to analysts, TJ Maxx picked up a sizable amount of foot traffic from people just coming through the doors on the weekend before Black Friday, not to mention a flurry of publicity on Apple blogs like, say, this one. In short, it was a publicity stunt.

Honestly, as publicity stunts go, selling iPads for $400 is a pretty good one. Steve himself wasn't real happy about it, but if any other retail chains want to pick up the banner, we'll follow the charge.

  • Apple releases AirPlay video for 4.2 iPad feature

Apple has released a new promotional video that informs customers about AirPlay, the iOS 4.2 (and iTunes) feature that lets customers stream movies, music and photos from an iOS device to a current-generation Apple TV, Airport Express-connected speakers or AirPlay-enabled speakers.*

We're testing this now, but the happy actor in the video makes it look easy. Just tap the AirPlay icon on your iOS device to send video, audio or photos to the appropriate device. With the multitasking power of iOS 4.2, you can even leave the video app playing, for example, and knock off a game of Angry Birds while you watch your show.

Note that AirPlay is very much a one-way street. That means you can send data from an iOS device to an Apple TV or speakers, and that's it. No iPad to Mac, for example, or Mac streaming to iDevices (although you can use third-party tools like Air Video and AirFoil to get the effect). Still, it's a swell feature that we'll cover more in-depth for you soon. In the meantime, enjoy the video after the break.

*From partners like JBL and iHome.

  • Apple retro-fitting iPhone 4s with 5-point Torx screws

[Editor's Note: Several commenters have pointed out that the 5-point Torx screw is not unique to Apple gear, and although they are somewhat more difficult to work with than 6-point Torx or conventional screws, tools are readily available to remove them if needed. The actual "tamper resistant" Torx TR screws have a center pin designed to prevent the use of alternative tools, which these screws do not have.

The question of whether the Torx replacements are primarily for mechanical or security reasons is not yet completely resolved. It is possible that the screw change has nothing to do with device security, but if it were simply a manufacturing change, there is no reason Apple could not use 6-lobe Torx instead, which will work with the more common driver heads.

Finally, the original version of this post credited Cult of Mac for both the story and the accompanying image; we have since learned that the actual source was 9to5 Mac, and that CoM used the picture without crediting the site correctly. Our apologies.]

Apple has begun retro-fitting iPhone 4s brought in for service with proprietary Torx screws, meant to keep customers out. Similar to those used to keep the new MacBook Air sealed, these screws are of Apple's own design and send a clear message: do not enter.

What would prompt such a move? No doubt the cottage industry of after-market conversion kits of white casing parts has something to do with it. The anti-tampering screws are showing up on recently-purchased iPhone 4s as well.

On one hand, it's an understandable move: Apple makes no money on those kits. On the other, it seems like dirty pool. I've almost always been able to open my Apple products and make at least some changes on my own, even cosmetic ones (like the white iPhone kits). Locking the iPhones and MacBook Airs down eliminates that option entirely.

  • UK iPad subsidy plan to be announced later today
Everything Everywhere is the UK's largest mobile network operator, and it owns the UK telecom brands Orange UK and T-Mobile UK. According to Marketing Week, the two telecom brands are expected to issue a formal announcement on November 22 that they will sell the iPad at their dual-branded stores. Not only will the Everything Everywhere stores be carrying the iPad, but they will also offer a discount plan to consumers who enter a service contract with their telecom brands.

The discount plan to Orange and T-Mobile subscribers could mean up to 70 percent off of the iPad price tag if the subscriber signs an 18 month or 2 year contract. This is pretty big news, since this is the first widescale iPad subsidy being offered to consumers. Hopefully, Everything Everywhere is merely leading the charge, and we'll soon see iPad subsidies from other mobile carriers.

No further details have been offered yet, although we should expect more contract details with the formal announcement soon.

  • iPad will hit Korea on November 30
ipad koreaEarlier this month we reported the iPad had cleared governmental hurdles in Korea and was about to begin taking pre-orders. Today, Electronista reports that over 60,000 pre-orders for the iPad have been taken. KT Corp. is offering the iPad in Korea with a subsidy if you sign up for their data service, bringing the 16GB version to less than US$200. You can still buy a Wi-Fi model without a subsidy for around US$559.

Competitor SK Telecom, meanwhile is selling the Galaxy Tab with some success, predicting over 1 million in sales by the end of the year. As far as we can tell, SK Telecom is still considering carrying the iPad (and iPhone 4), but there have been no new announcements from Korea's #1 carrier. Until then, the iPad will continue to be sold by KT Corp.
