  • TUAW's Holiday Gift Guide: iPad for photographers

Welcome to the TUAW Holiday Gift Guide! We've sorted the treasure from the junk and are serving up suggestions to make your holiday gift-giving a little easier.

As we enter the first full-blown holiday season since the iPad's release, there are a good many people out there who are either getting one as a gift or toting one along to Grandma's to wow the family and, quite possibly, use it as a laptop replacement. If it's the latter, you're more than likely going to need to use the iPad as a means of clearing the card on your digital camera at some point. Here are a few things that will make the process easier.

  • Shop Savvy for iPhone packs a punch for shopping season

Just a couple of days ago, I took a look at the Amazon Price Check app. It's a great way to compare prices against Amazon and other online retailers. Before you hit the stores this weekend, it's also a good idea to have the free app Shop Savvy tucked away on your iPhone.

It contains an accurate scanner like the Amazon app, but it also includes local prices and a map to get you to your store of choice. Even better, the app puts a little blue dot next to the stores that have your items in stock. The app has been around for a while, but it has been updated to include deals, complete with info about rebates, sales and special promotions. It also includes coupon codes. The app includes reviews, and you can add your own, as well as share the low prices you have found via email, Twitter and Facebook.

I took it on a jaunt to some local stores and it worked very well. The scanner locked in on the barcode quite quickly, and it was accurate. When you simply type in the name of a product, the app suggests what you might be looking for, so it saves you a bunch of keystrokes.

The app does make local and online comparisons, and not surprisingly, the online prices are often cheaper, but not always. This is a pretty handy app if you're running around looking for gifts. I've given it a permanent place on my iPhone, and I think you'll find it both handy and money saving. If you've seen our survey of shopping apps, be sure to add this one to your list.

  • Happy Thanksgiving from TUAW

We may forget it from time to time, but today it's clear: all of us at TUAW are exceedingly thankful that we get to write about what we love and share it with you. We wish you and yours the happiest of holidays.

The pace of posts may be somewhat slower over the next four days as our US team celebrates with family and friends, but we'll still be keeping an eye on the news and the sales through the weekend.

[Also, our apologies for the duplicate comments problem -- our confirmation pages aren't loading as they should. We're working on a fix.]

Everything's on sale somewhere, and "everything" includes plenty of Apple accessories, apps and products. Here's a listing of all the sales we've collected and heard about this past week. There are bound to be more out there, too -- if you know of a good deal this week, feel free to add it in the comments below as well.

    • Best Buy is offering a $100 or $150 gift card with most of its Mac purchases.
    • Target, Toys R Us and Best Buy are all offering bonus gift cards with the purchase of an 8GB iPod touch.
    • Other World Computing has a whole page of deals for the holiday, including $7.50 dock cables, $99 for 8GB RAM upgrade kits and 90% off NewerTech iOS cases and accessories.
    • This isn't Apple-related, but if the iPad is too pricey for you, you can pick up an Amazon Kindle 2 for only $89 on Friday.

A few more deals, including lots and lots and lots of App Store deals, after the break.

  • Australia's Apple Store leads with Black Friday discounts

Down Under it's already Friday, so as is customary, the Australian version of the online Apple Store has already posted the holiday discounts it's offering for the day. All items include free shipping. The US and other online Apple Stores will probably hew quite closely to these discounts when they reveal their deal pages.

The savings hover around 8% for most items, although if you're looking for an iPod touch this holiday you might consider buying it tomorrow -- depending on capacity, you might save as much as 18% off retail.

Note that several domestic retailers (Walmart, Best Buy and Toys R Us among others) are expected to offer gift card bundles tomorrow on the iPod touch -- you'll get $30-$50 of store credit usable on a future visit. If you're a frequent shopper at the store, it's worth considering.

  • TUAW's Holiday Gift Guide: Shopping apps

Welcome to the TUAW Holiday Gift Guide! We've sorted the treasure from the junk and are serving up suggestions to make your holiday gift-giving a little easier.

Tomorrow officially begins the holiday shopping season in the States, and that means recycled air, linoleum floors and Orange Julius stains on your Quacker sweater. Of course I'm talking about the mall, which is best experienced in limited doses this time of the year. To help you get in and out, we've compiled some shopping apps to bring along with you. Here's what we found.

Best bet -- avoid the mall entirely

Some people enjoy the bustle of a holiday mall. Others prefer to stay at home. For the latter, we offer these handy apps.

    Windowshop (Free, compatible with iPad)

Windowshop for iPad provides an iOS-friendly front end to Amazon. The entire selection is available and sorted by category: electronics, books, the Kindle store, movies, clothing ... 34 main categories in total, each with several sub-categories. Tap any item to pop up an information panel with photos, a description, customer ratings and, of course, the Add To Cart button. You can even add to your wish list and share items via email, Facebook or Twitter. Finally, a search field lets you avoid all of that scrolling and tapping. It's a tidy app that provides iPad-optimized access to Amazon's immense collection of stuff.

Those with an iPhone/iPod touch will want to check out Amazon Mobile.

  • ForkLift 2, slick file management, fast file transfers

ForkLift 2 was officially released this week. This is the second generation of the FTP client-cum-Finder replacement, and it brings with it a veritable shipping palette full of new features.

When it comes to file transfer, ForkLift 2 has just about all the bases covered: FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3, iDisk, SMB, AFP and NIS, with impressive speeds and FXP copy capabilities. You can connect directly, as you would in a standard FTP browser, or you can mount the disk in the same fashion that the latest version of Transmit does. This allows for access to remote files from any application, remote editing and some additional file management tools. ForkLift can save "Droplets," similar to other FTP clients, which give you a drop target for uploading to a specific server and folder. You can also set up a sync between any two folders, remote or local, and save the set as a "Synclet," a small app that will run the sync automatically.

The interface is slick, with a few features that make this a killer app for me. It maintains the original ForkLift's two-pane, tabbed interface, and it adds a Favorites panel, better progress meters and extensive keyboard navigation. My favorite new feature is the Stack, similar to what Path Finder has, where you can temporarily collect files on which to perform mass actions. You can turn any file selection into a stack, and you can have multiple stacks going at any time. Another feature I love is Workspaces, which lets you define pairs of folders to open at the same time. It sounds simple, but if you do a lot of filing from one folder to other subfolders, it's a very nice time-saver.

The tool set is pretty impressive, too. From being able to create both aliases and real symlinks to splitting and combining large files, it brings in a ton of functionality that Finder has always been missing. It even has a Trash App command for removing an application and its data, à la AppZapper. Selecting files is a breeze with the advanced search, filter and selection tools. ForkLift even has a multi-rename feature for performing mass filename changes.

I won't try to detail every one of the new features -- it's an extensive list. I will say that I think ForkLift 2 brings to life a truly integrated file management environment that combines the best features of leading FTP apps and file managers. A single-user license is US$29.95, and ForkLift 1 users can upgrade for US$19.95. There's a family license available as well, which covers all the Macs in your household, for US$49.95. You can find out more, and download a free trial, at the BinaryNights website.

  • iOS 4.2.1 brings baseband signature check, unlockers warned to wait

unlock iphone 4With the release of iOS 4.2.1, Apple has again gained the upper hand in the ongoing cat and mouse battle against iPhone unlockers. While the U.S. Library of Congress has decreed that users who choose to unlock their mobile devices for use on alternative networks cannot be prosecuted under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), there was unfortunately no prohibition on companies locking phones in the first place.

As a result, Apple has continued to tweak its locking mechanisms with every new release of iOS, including the one released earlier this week. Starting with iOS 4.2.1, the main part of the operating system checks the baseband firmware at startup, and if it doesn't match an expected signature, the phone will not boot. In the event of a failure, the iPhone will be stuck in recovery mode until it is restored to its original form. The baseband firmware is the portion of iOS that actually controls the cellular radio hardware, and this is what must be hacked in order to allow iPhones to be used on carriers other than AT&T (or whichever overseas provider sold the phone).

This change could potentially make things much more complicated for developers creating unlocking tools. However, if past history is anything to go by, it will be more a matter of when and not if they succeed. In the meantime, those that are using iPhones on T-Mobile USA or other non-original carriers will want to sit tight on iOS 4.1 or earlier.

  • Apple hiring BlackBerry enterprise sales staff

The era of the BlackBerry's dominance in the corporate communicator market may be drawing to a close, and Apple is recruiting staff to speed that process along. Over the past year and a half, Apple has hired at least five senior enterprise sales reps from Research in Motion (RIM), the Canadian manufacturer of the BlackBerry.

In April 2009, Geoff Perfect joined Apple from RIM as Head of Enterprise iPhone Sales, and he has since been joined by four colleagues with contacts in the business. It's unknown how much of the increasing corporate adoption of iOS devices is due to the efforts of this crew and how much would have occurred organically as a result of employees bringing in their own iPhones. Either way, there has certainly been no love lost between Apple and RIM in recent months.

Apple has recently claimed that the iPhone is outselling the BlackBerry and that smaller seven-inch tablets are a bad idea. In response, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie has accused Apple of playing fast and loose with the numbers and spreading disinformation about devices like its upcoming PlayBook tablet. Ultimately, RIM's biggest problem is unlikely to be either staff poaching or executive sniping. Instead, it is the lack of any real innovation or even keeping pace with its products. Hiring Perfect and his colleagues is probably just a bonus for Apple.

  • SlingPlayer for iPad now available [update: does not work with PRO]

Just a week after the teaser video was released, SlingPlayer for iPad (US$29.99) is officially available. This app lets you stream anything that comes from your Slingbox SOLO, PRO, or PRO-HD to and iPad via Wi-Fi or 3G. Thirty bucks is kind of high, and the app isn't universal so you're looking at sixty bucks if you want to toss an iPhone into the mix.

Note that the Slingbox Classic, AV, PRO and TUNER are not supported for use with SlingPlayer Mobile. If you own one of those you're not completely out of luck; you can take advantage of an upgrade offer to save $50 on a new Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD.

[Updated regarding Slingbox PRO compatibility. The app description from Sling suggests that the app is compatible with the Slingbox PRO when used on the iPad, but our readers report differently. We apologize for any confusion, and we are contacting Sling to find out what, if anything, they intend to do to compensate PRO owners who bought the app in error.]
