- iPad now on sale at Sam's Club
Not only can you buy a jar full of more pickles than a human could ever eat, you can also now pick up an iPad at your local Sam's Club. Apple's magical and revolutionary device has been spotted on shelves at Sam Walton's big box supply store, and pretty cheap, too -- you can get a 16GB Wi-Fi model for just $488, $11 cheaper than it is on Apple's online store. The only problem is that you have to buy a big box of 30 at a time to get that price.
No, of course we're kidding. Considering that Walmart is selling the iPad, it was only a matter of time before these showed up at Sam's Club, and the $11 off is just the discount that Sam's Club makes back whenever you pay for their membership fees. Still, if you're in the market for an iPad and have a Sam's Club card from your business or organization, eleven bucks is eleven bucks.

Переслать - Found Footage: Palm Top 3D Theater creates Pepper's Ghost on the iPhone
A sort of 3D may be coming to an iPhone or iPod touch near you through a new gadget using technology that was developed in 1842 called Pepper's Ghost. Jistsuro Mase, a Japanese artist has created i3DG which converts a 2D images into three layered images that are displayed on three planes using a snap on contraption containing three 45-degree mirrors. The images must be specially designed to be split into three parts, and i3DG then reconnects them for a near 3D effect that can be viewed without glasses. You've probably seen Pepper's Ghost if you've been to a Disney Park, since it's heavily used in The Haunted Mansion and the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to make characters look like they are appearing out of nowhere.
In the picture above, for instance, the woman is on one screen, while the rest of the room's objects are situated on various other screens. Using see-through glass, all of the images combine into one image, which (if you were looking at it in real life) would then translate into 3D. The effect can be very impressive, as long as you understand that nothing can move from the front to the back since all there is to work with is three layers. The video after the break will show you just how good it can be under the right circumstances.

Переслать - How-To: Create PDFs from your iOS device
AirPrint may not be officially implemented in Mac OS X yet, but the feature remains present in the latest iOS 4.2 GM available to developers. For those who do have iOS 4.2 GM installed on their iDevices and are hoping to enable AirPrint, we've got a handy guide for you. Or you can also can use the AirPrint Hacktivator to get the job done.
That all covers printing to paper from iOS, but I've decided to take it a step further for those who want to "print" but remain paperless: Print to a PDF. And not only print to a PDF, but then immediately have that PDF accessible to the same device.
Here are some rather simple steps to get your PDF on.Continue reading How-To: Create PDFs from your iOS device

Переслать - Ed Bott's side-by-side Mac and PC experiment
ZDNet's Microsoft reporter Ed Bott is switching to a Mac. It's not forever and not in the way that you may be thinking, but for the time being he has decided to get serious about a side-by-side Mac and PC comparison he started over a year ago. Using a Mac mini and an HP Pavilion Elite desktop connected to dueling 24-inch monitors and sharing a single keyboard and mouse, he's not so much switching (wonder if he has watched the Apple "Find Out How" videos yet) but rather working towards his goal of being "comfortable enough to move between machines and use the best tools on each one with as little friction as possible." Using Synergy, open-source software that allows the use of one keyboard and mouse with both machines at once, Bott can move between them at will throughout the day.
While this first installment in his "switch" is mostly about getting everything set up correctly, future discussion will include any hassles of platform switching and a comparison of the latest Office versions on each. Sure sounds like a much more complicated way of switching than the method I used with my Mom, which was to ask her to please just listen to me and buy a Mac.
She's been thankful ever since.Ed Bott's side-by-side Mac and PC experiment originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 18:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Adobe is testing optimized Flash Player beta for the MacBook Air
Today Engadget sat down with Adobe's Shantanu Narayen and asked him what the MacBook Air's increased battery life -- sans Flash installed -- meant for the future of Flash in the wake of HTML5.
Narayen kinda dodged the question with this stay-on-message answer: "When we have access to hardware acceleration, we've proven that Flash has equal or better performance on every platform," but then went on to say that Adobe is currently testing a beta version of Flash specifically designed for the MacBook Air.
When Apple introduced the new MacBook Air, news quickly spread when it was discovered the company had left Adobe's Flash Player off the system. You could still run Flash content on the Air just fine -- you just had to download the plugin and install it yourself. Apple said they left Flash Player off the Air so users would be sure to download the latest version. After the new MacBook Airs dropped, however, Ars Technica ran some tests and discovered that having Flash on the MacBook Air could reduce its battery run time by as much as a third. This led me to speculate that the real reason Apple left Flash off the Air is so it could advertise higher real-world wireless usage battery numbers. Shortly after that, Adobe's CTO said the reduced battery time would be the same if the Air was running web pages with HTML5 video.
With today's acknowledgment from Narayen, it's nice to see that Adobe is still trying to make Flash Player a contender. It still seems like Flash has its work cut out for it, given that virtually every major tech company has decided to throw their support behind HTML5.Adobe is testing optimized Flash Player beta for the MacBook Air originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. Переслать - SlideRocket brings web presentations to iPhone and iPad with HTML5
Since the dawn of time, traveling professionals have sought easier ways to present on the go. Pico projectors! Netbooks! Converting presentations to video to show them on iPhones! Then there was Keynote on the iPad, and it was good. Not great, however: presenters with libraries of PPT content have had to convert them over, and keeping your decks up to date with the latest and greatest from the sales department is a drag. Wouldn't it be better and easier if there was a nice cloud-based solution that played well with Mobile Safari?
Enter SlideRocket's new HTML5 player; the freemium web service now supports playing back (not editing) presentations on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with full-screen video, a handful of good-looking builds and transitions, and all the analytics and version control you want. While the normal SlideRocket player requires Flash or AIR to show content, this one works fine without them.
Click on to learn more about SlideRocket's capabilities, and see a video demo of the HTML5 playback in action.

Переслать - Comcast turns your iPad and iPhone into a sophisticated remote
Cable giant Comcast has released its free Xfinity TV app for both the iPhone and the iPad (we first saw a prototype demo back in May). The app allows you to browse TV listings, including the massive Comcast On Demand library. You can filter shows by genre, network, resolution (SD vs. HD) and more.
It also turns your iPhone or iPad into a remote. The main advantage here is having an on-screen keyboard, because as all cable and satellite users know, typing with a cursor is about as painful as it gets. You can change channels, and even notify friends with Comcast to watch a program at the same time.
There are DVR controls and the ability to program your DVR when you are away from home, which is great. The glaring omission is the inability to stream content directly to the device. Comcast says that will happen in later updates.
Comments on the app store are pretty negative. Some people are having setup problems while others didn't realize that the app requires digital cable and only works with some of the Comcast set top boxes. Also, for some functions, you still need your Comcast remote. It all seems a bit half-baked but it will probably improve.
The app works on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and requires iOS 3.2 or later. Переслать - Why you really shouldn't have expected more than Beatles on iTunes today
We here at TUAW, and those of you who read us and a dozen other Apple or tech blogs each day were certainly amped about a full-page takeover on Apple.com yesterday. We were subsequently a bit let down when the veil lifted to reveal... The Beatles on iTunes.
Keep in mind Twitter + Ping happened via press release -- a Facebook + Ping update could also have happened inside iTunes without an update to iTunes itself, and likewise just merit a press release without so much hoopla. So why did we expect more?
It's a classic case of what we do when we see a tease from Apple. We expect a unicorn to emerge, bathed in the light of the Apple logo, being led by Steve Jobs carrying a bucket of golden oats. Further, we expect this unicorn to fulfill our every whim, our every desire, be easy to use and be hated by a faction who just likes to hate anything Apple does.Oh, and we know they'll just trot out a new unicorn next year, one you can get in seven colors, but we don't care -- we want this new, shiny unicorn NOW and if we don't get what we expect, we are terribly let down.
But guess what? If you do read TUAW and a dozen other tech sites every day, and you've been reading about Apple for at least the past 10 years, you should have known better. Here are the reasons why.Continue reading Why you really shouldn't have expected more than Beatles on iTunes today

Переслать - Today is just another day I will forget
When Apple teased "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget" on their home page yesterday I hoped it was going to be something really cool -- like cloud-based iTunes or a subscription iTunes service. When the news began to leak out that the event was the Beatles coming to iTunes finally it was cool, but a day I'll never forget? Nope.
Don't get me wrong, it's great to finally have the Beatles on iTunes, but Apple, lets keep this in check. For $149 and the click of a button it's nice to get all of the Beatles tracks from iTunes if I want them, but most Beatles fans had the band's entire discography ripped when MP3s started going mainstream back in 2001. Heck, hardcore fans probably had their tracks encoded at such high levels in Ogg Vorbis or FLAC that they needed a separate hard drive just to contain their Beatles tunes (and if they don't yet, Amazon will help them out -- today they lowered their Beatles Stereo Box Set to only $129).
Seven years ago a Beatles/iTunes announcement might have earned the "never forget" slogan, but not today in 2010. And while it's only been three hours since the release, the iTunes Store music charts confirms that this isn't the earth-shattering news it was made out to be. Not one Beatles song has cracked the Top 10 list yet, while a new song from Katy Perry or the Black Eyed Peas usually shoots up the charts within minutes of being released -- and without taking up 40% of the real estate on the iTunes Music Store homepage or the front page of Apple.com like the Fab Four has.
I also want to point out that for all the hoopla over today's "event" one thing that could have made it somewhat memorable is a Beatles-branded iPod touch. If a band-branded iPod is good enough for some guys from Dublin, surely a group of four lads from Liverpool deserve one too.
Beatles: glad to have you on iTunes. Apple: I've already forgotten something you said I wouldn't. Wish I could remember what it was...Today is just another day I will forget originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Google Voice for iPhone is finally out on the App Store
Turns out, when Apple announced it was a day you'd never forget, maybe it wasn't talking about The Beatles. Last we heard, Google Voice was expected on the App Store "soon" ... and now here it is. Apple has relented in the battle to allow Google Voice functionality on the iPhone, leaving Google open to release its own official app for the service.
It looks just as good as you'd expect -- you can sign into the service from anywhere, access your voicemail or even send text messages or Google Voice calls, and get push notifications when you've got a new message incoming.
Obviously, you'll need a Google Voice account to use the app, but those are free and easy enough to set up. The app is only available in the United States, according to its description, so those of you outside the country are out of luck (for now). It's also probably not compatible with the iPad -- the listing only says it's available for the iPhone so far.
Our own Mike Rose& TJ Luoma[TJ comments below that he objects to the iPhone-only restriction on the app, as he would like to use it to send and receive SMS on the iPad or iPod touch] are jumping for joy on this one -- we've got a lot of TUAW Google Voice fans, and having this functionality available on the iPhone is a very nice bonus even with the third-party apps already on the market. Переслать - Apple's exclusive digital rights to The Beatles extend into 2011
As you probably know, Apple has secured exclusive digital rights to The Beatles' catalog. But for how long? According to All Things Digital, the deal extends into 2011.
EMI Music spokesman Dylan Jones told All Things D that Apple's deal reaches into 2011 and beyond January 1st. He did confirm that the exclusivity will eventually end, but he didn't say when. For the time being, distributors like Amazon, Spotify, Rhapsody and the Zune will just have to wait.
Writing for All Things D, Peter Kafka wonders if the band will renew the exclusivity deal or even walk away from digital entirely when it expires. The latter seems crazy to us. Paul, Ringo et al apparently got serious about digital when Rock Band: The Beatles came out. We're betting the group has joined the digital revolution for good.Apple's exclusive digital rights to The Beatles extend into 2011 originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. Переслать - Altec Lansing releases Octiv Stage speaker dock for iPad
Altec Lansing has finally released its newest speaker dock, the Octiv Stage, for iPads. The Octiv Stage differs from many docks in that it has a comparatively small footprint and can support the tablet in either portrait or landscape orientation.
The iPad is clipped into a bracket on a rotating arm, and the base with the speakers spans virtually the same width as the narrow side of the tablet. While the iPad's display has excellent viewing angles, the arm of the Octiv Stage also allows the tilt angle to be adjusted for optimum viewing. Like other Altec Lansing speaker docks, the MP450 Octiv Stage comes with a remote that allows users to adjust the volume and navigate through playlists.
According to the press release, the dock also supports the iPhone and iPods, although presumably only in portrait mode. A 3.5 mm auxiliary jack also allows the use of non-Apple players. The Octiv Stage MP450 is on sale now for US$149.95.

Переслать - New iPhone 4 ad touts battery life
Apple has released another TV ad for the iPhone 4 in the U.S., this time bragging about its battery life. The ad begins by stating that the iPhone's lithium polymer battery lets users "work longer, play longer, laugh longer..." and so on while showing off features like email, gaming, video and so on.
The first batch of iPhone 4 ads described FaceTime, while the previous spot, entitled "Every," turned the focus to hardware; specifically, the Retina Display. This ad (still untitled as it hasn't yet appeared on Apple.com) continues that trend by showing off the powerful battery, while slipping in software features as well. You can see it in its entirety after the break.

Переслать - Net neutrality expert calls Apple the number one threat to Internet freedom
According to Tim Wu, author of The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires and the man responsible for the term "net neutrality," Apple is the number one danger to Internet freedom. In a one on one interview with the New York Times, Columbia law professor Wu claims that what worries him most about Apple is that "Steve Jobs has the charisma, vision and instincts of every great information emperor. The man who helped create the personal computer 40 years ago is probably the leading candidate to help exterminate it. His vision has an undeniable appeal, but he wants too much control."
While net neutrality has been a hot topic as of late, and I can understand having some healthy skepticism about monopolistic behavior by corporations, I have a bit of an issue when someone claims that the power of a CEO is similar to that of a great nation. That's a pretty large conclusion he jumps directly to, especially when he says that "the man who starts as the great reformer often ends his career by becoming increasingly paranoid and abusive" to back up the claim. It seems a bit superfluous at best. After all, in 1994 Time magazine wondered if Bill Gates was getting too powerful, but I never saw him transform into an evil, paranoid CEO.
What do you guys think about Professor Wu's claims?

Переслать - Accused Apple manager could be forced to return $1M in kickbacks
Back in August we learned of the arrest of Paul Shin Devine on charges of taking over $1 million in kickbacks from Apple suppliers. Since that time, prosecutors have been following the money trail and have now asked U.S. District Judge James Ware in San Jose, California to order the forfeiture of US$1 million in cash and assets. The government has frozen $950,000 in cash from six different bank accounts belonging to Devine.
Devine was a global supply manager for Apple until his arrest and was accused of providing confidential information to suppliers before they negotiated contracts with the company. Prosecutors are still hanging on to Devine's computers as part of the investigation of the case. The indictment of Devine included 23 charges of wire fraud, wire-fraud conspiracy, and money laundering, each of which carries a potential 20 year prison sentence with a conviction. Devine has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and is currently out on bail.Accused Apple manager could be forced to return $1M in kickbacks originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST. Переслать - You can't buy me love, but you can buy the Beatles on iTunes
It slipped out a bit early, but the Beatles complete back catalog is available through iTunes. The individual albums clock in at $12.99 (with the Past Masters and the White, Red and Blue albums are $19.99) while a boxset of the Beatles' entire work is available for $149. Individual tracks are $1.29 each. The boxset includes all 13 of the band's studio albums, Past Masters and an iTunes LP with mini-documentaries, photos, notes and more. The mini-documentaries were initially featured with last year's CD boxset and are also included on the individual albums. The band's mono collection does not appear to be available at this time. The iTunes page has a number of features, including ads, a highlight reel and the first-ever Beatles' concert on U.S. soil in 1964.
Apple updated the iTunes Store's front page to officially announce the release shortly before 10 a.m. ET.
This is the culmination of a long and sometimes bitter battle that has its roots in a 1978 lawsuit between Apple Corps and Apple Computer. After winning a lawsuit against Apple Corps in 2006, Apple began actively courting the surviving band members and their heirs. It was a long and winding road indeed as the Beatles spent the interim releasing both the remastered albums and Rock Band: The Beatles. As the years slipped by and iTunes continued to dominate the music industry, it became more of a "when" and not an "if" the Beatles were going to be on iTunes. Paul McCartney even starred in an iPod ad in 2007. The group's solo efforts have been available for a few years as well.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Time Geeks
Time Geeks is a charmer. It's basically an image finder -- you're presented with a picture full of various things and goings-on and tasked with seeking out a certain item or image in that picture. There are a few of these on the App Store, and some of them are pretty lousy, but Time Geeks is anything but. You're still just pointing and clicking, but the images in Time Geeks are just incredible. They're gorgeous pixelated art, packed with not only great looking colors and shapes, but also nerd and geek references aplenty. I saw references to Lost, The Legend of Zelda, Star Trek, Dragon Ball Z, Lemmings, and a few other really obscure geeky properties -- and that's just the first few goals in the first level.
The game also has six different game modes to play with and seven mini-games -- it's very much packed with content. There's even a very intuitive editor where you can create your own pictures using all of the little sprites and art that the actual game uses. The full version is just 99 cents, which is a bargain as-is, and the team has promised updates in the future. Just in case all of my gushing hasn't yet sold you, there's a lite version to try out as well.
I was really impressed with Time Geeks. Image search and find apps tend to be a little underpowered and are usually just attempts by the developer to build a simple game and grab a few bucks. But Time Geeks is a lot of fun, and it's definitely a full-featured title that's worth a look no matter what kind of games you like.TUAW's Daily App: Time Geeks originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST. Переслать - Outlook 2011 review: Beyond Entourage, not quite Outlook for Windows
TUAW dives into Microsoft Office 2011 with reviews of the apps that make up the suite.
The legend lives on, in somewhat different form. The last time there was a version of Outlook for the Mac, it was Outlook 2001, it ran on Mac OS 9, and it only spoke MAPI (the legacy Exchange mail protocol). It lived alongside Office 2001, which already included Entourage for POP mail and contact/calendar management, so the writing was on the wall.
Once Mac OS X came along, Microsoft settled on Entourage as the new Mac personal information management app, and Outlook was long thought to be dead on the platform -- until now. Is it a worthwhile part of the 2011 package, or does Apple's Exchange 2007 support in Snow Leopard's built-in apps match up well? Let's discuss.
First things first: Outlook 2011 is not actually Outlook as you know, "love," and use it on various flavors of Windows. It is essentially an upgraded and revamped version of Entourage 2008, but it's polished up with some changes that will make some workflows smoother. I have been using it as my primary email client at my day job, and so far it hasn't had the random fits Entourage was known for. Another thing to note is the difference in editions -- if you buy the Home & Student Edition of Office 2011, you won't even get Outlook. You have to buy Home & Business or the Enterprise corporate edition of Office to get Outlook at all, so if your focus is a shiny new email client, it will cost you (or your employer).Click "Read More" to see the new features in this resurrected app for the Macintosh.

Переслать - MacBundles invites customers to 'Build Your Own Bundle'
Ever since the success of MacHeist, it seems like resellers offering bundles of applications at heavily discounted prices are proliferating. MacBundles has an interesting new twist: a la carte application bundles. Just like buying a CD that has a few songs you really like along with a bunch of filler, the same is usually true for these packages of apps. But at MacBundles, you can now get a full slate of a dozen apps for $50, or if some of the choices don't strike your fancy, you can select as few as five to create your own bundle.
Customers who opt for five or more programs will pay just US$5.95 for each application, a price that drops to $4.95 per if you buy ten. Of course at that latter price you are already paying the same price as the full package of twelve, so you may as well just get them all. Given the discounts on these packages, it's usually worth just buying the whole thing even just to try out the apps. The current offering is available only until November 28.

Переслать - iPhone Minecraft client posted, pulled
If you keep a close eye on the App Store (or have a quick RSS feed following it), you might have noticed an app called Minecrafted up there on Monday morning. It's a Minecraft client for iOS, a version of the extremely popular indie game that can be run on an iPhone, and connect up to real Minecraft servers. But before you run to download it, not so fast -- the app has been pulled from the App Store already, and if you try to find it on the US store, you'll get an error message.
So what's the deal? TUAW contacted the app's creator, Trevor Wilkin, and he told us that his original idea was to create the client, submit it to Apple, and then get official approval from the makers of Minecraft before putting it live. Apple threw it live right away, however, and Wilkin says he "pretty much freaked out and removed from sale as quickly as I possibly could." He doesn't know whether the app is legit or not -- it's all original code, according to the description, but presumably he backwards engineered a few things, because it's apparently compatible with current servers and versions of the game.
Wilkin sounds innocent enough to us. He says that he has "no desire to hurt the brand and just wanted to introduce a useful tool. I still hope to work out an official solution that doesn't step on anyone's toes." We hope so, too -- having Minecraft up and running officially on iOS would be a nice bonus for both iPhone owners and fans of the incredibly popular game.iPhone Minecraft client posted, pulled originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 01:30:00 EST. Переслать - Rage: Mutant Bash TV brings id Tech 5 to iOS
We saw id games' newest title, Rage, demonstrated earlier this year on an iOS device, but now there's more details and specifics on just how it's coming to iOS. It's not a straight port of the PC and console shooter -- rather, id is calling it Rage: Mutant Bash TV, and releasing this version of the game as an original, on-rails shooter. IGN has some video of the game running, and it looks pretty great. While the on-rails part means that you don't control movement at all, the camera controls and shooting gameplay look like a lot of fun.
Of course the graphics look terrific -- Epic Games' Infinity Blade will apparently have some competition for the best-looking next-gen game on iOS. And while there's no word yet on what kind of Game Center integration we'll see (or, you know, price or date), apparently the game will have a "TV Out" option, allowing you to output the video to your television if you've got the appropriate cables for your iPad or iPhone. Sounds good -- we'll keep a look out for this one and let you know when it's out.Rage: Mutant Bash TV brings id Tech 5 to iOS originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 22:00:00 EST. Переслать - Forbes calls Scott Forstall a 'name you need to know'
Do you know who Scott Forstall is?
According to Forbes Magazine, you should. As part of a crowd-sourcing project for the January issue of the magazine, Forbes asked readers to suggest the names of people who will be important in 2011. One of the picks was Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iPhone software.
Forstall was one of the NeXT engineers who followed Steve Jobs back to Apple, and in his current role he's the man behind the wild success of iOS. It's estimated that iOS currently runs on over 100 million devices worldwide.
Apple's executive profile for Forstall notes that he "is one of the original architects of OS X," and was "responsible for several releases of the operating system, most notably Mac OS X Leopard."
Looking forward to the future release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, we can expect to see Forstall's genius at work as elements of iOS make their way onto the Mac.

Переслать - Damon Albarn making next Gorillaz album completely on an iPad
Musicians love the iPad -- it's a powerful computer with an intuitive interface, and that turns Apple's tablet into one of the best musical instruments (both real and virtual) around. Now, Damon Albarn, formerly of Blur and now frontman for the band Gorillaz, has become a fan as well. He tells NME that he's making a brand new record completely on the revolutionary and magical device. "I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad," he said. "I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record."
That sounds interesting -- the album is apparently an official Gorillaz album (Albarn frequently collaborates with all kinds of artists for the "band's" music), and Albarn says it should be out sometime soon, "before Christmas." We'll have to look forward to it -- all of the iPad music we've heard so far sounds great, and it'll be intriguing to see what kinds of decisions Albarn makes just by working on an iPad.

Переслать - 10.6.5 server update back online, with a small security tweak
The Mac OS X Server 10.6.5 update is back online, now marked v1.1 and with an incremented build number. It's available through Software Update and for download after fixing a memory aliasing issue in Dovecot's handling of user names.
We reported earlier that the 10.6.5 Server update was pulled briefly, coincident with reports of a number of issues. These included problems with Whole Disk Encryption, DNS resolution issues, LDAP/Open Directory master hiccups and remote connection drops. It's not clear yet whether the revised update is only associated with the reported security issue, or if it's going to address the other problems reported. Our advice: Wait a few days before applying, use a non-production server to test, and back up first.

Переслать - Why 10.6.5 and Symantec's PGP Whole Disk Encryption didn't get along
Those of you who joined us for last night's TUAW Talkcast know that one of the Mac OS X 10.6.5 issues that we discussed dealt with PGP WDE (Whole Disk Encryption), a Symantec product that is used to encrypt an entire hard drive. PGP WDE is very useful to those who carry sensitive information on their MacBooks, as they can be assured that nobody can access the info or even boot the machine without knowing the encryption password.
Mac OS X 10.6.5 "broke" PGP WDE, with users of the product unable to boot their Macs at all. Rich Mogull at TidBITS looked into the issue and provided a wonderful explanation of how disk encryption works, as well as why the OS update caused the problem.
As Mogull explains, PGP WDE integrates with the Mac firmware so that powering up the computer forces it to enter a special unencrypted state that displays nothing but a password prompt. Entering the correct password then decrypts the normal operating system, which is in an encrypted partition on the disk. To display the special password prompt at bootup, PGP makes changes to the boot.efi file that is used by your Mac to begin loading Mac OS X.
What happened? The shipping version of 10.6.5 overwrote those changes to the boot.efi file, so the pre-boot password prompt was never loaded. Symantec had tested PGP WDE with the beta versions of 10.6.5 with no problems, but apparently something was changed by Apple at the last minute before distribution of the update.
Symantec has posted a recommended upgrade process, and has also created a PGP Recovery CD image that can be downloaded and used if you're already upgraded to 10.6.5 and are stuck in "an unbootable state." As we mentioned on the TUAW Talkcast last night, problems like these are a good reason to keep a bootable clone of your hard drive on hand.

Переслать - Australia election campaign promises iPads in every hospital
In what I can comfortably say is a previously unimagined application, the iPad is now being used as an election promise to entice voters in Australia. ZDNet notes that the promise was made last week by Victorian Premier John Brumby as part of a proposed new state health policy, which would see iPads given to every doctor in Victoria's public hospitals, "noting their potential to impact positively on long-term hospital problems such as scheduling across the health ecosystem". Australia-based iSoft, an e-health vendor, has welcomed the policy due to their interest in targeting the iPad for use with its medical applications. Victoria has invested $360 million in an extensive overhaul of its record-keeping systems and iSoft is a key supplier of their efforts.
My own dermatologist uses an iPad during exams and has said it makes record keeping much easier for his nurses and assistants. Meanwhile, I just sit there thinking it's cool to see my doctor carrying around an iPad. It's only a matter of time before tablet computing takes over for paper records in medical settings.

Переслать - Wall Street Journal confirms Beatles on iTunes
Ethan Smith of the Wall Street Journal writes that iTunes will soon be carrying the Beatles catalog, according to "people familiar with the situation." According to Smith, this deal was finalized recently -- as late as last week -- between Apple and EMI group.
If so, this plays into the Beatles-style hints of today's teaser announcement on the Apple home page and supports the notion that iTunes will begin selling the Beatles music as early as tomorrow.

Переслать - Bump adds music-sharing upgrade
Bump is an older app on the App Store that allowed you to "share" contact information with another local phone not actually by Bluetooth, but by simply placing the two phones near the same location, and then sharing the information across a wireless network. Now, Bump is apparently adding a new trick to its arsenal. In version 2.2, out on the App Store now, you can actually "share" any of the songs in your iTunes library. Bump still doesn't actually push information from phone to phone -- instead, it will read out the song's information, and then give the receiving phone a YouTube link to hear the song, as well as links to preview and buy the song on iTunes (assuming it is available).
It's an interesting way of getting around the licensing restrictions that have prevented hearing the same music on multiple devices, and of course it solves the trouble of getting two phones up and wirelessly connected long enough to actually push a file across. A neat little bit of innovation for an app we installed on the iPhone a long time ago.Bump adds music-sharing upgrade originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. Переслать - Apple to offer youth workshops at select stores
Apple will host holiday-themed workshops for kids ages six to 13-years-old this month. Topics will include photos, videos and presentations. That sounds just swell, but the bad news is that the workshops will take place at a very limited number of Apple Stores.
Only 12 stores are participating, including some in Colorado, Florida, Michigan and New York. You can find the full list here. The number of workshops also varies from store to store. For example, Colorado's Flatiron Crossing Apple Store has just one, 90-minute workshop listed, while New York City's Upper West Side store lists six over four days.
Unfortunately, I'm out of luck here in Massachusetts as there aren't any listed. Selections probably depended on each store's typical traffic and number of trained staff, among other things. If you're lucky enough to attend one of these, have fun and let us now how it goes.

Переслать - iPad owners' usage increasing over time
Business Insider recently surveyed 500 iPad users about their habits with some interesting results. Among the most interesting is that nearly 80 percent of respondents (77.6) said they use their iPads more often now than they did when they first got them, suggesting that, after the novelty had worn off, customers continued to use their iPads. Even more so, in fact.
The study also found that 71 percent of participants use their iPads between one and five hours per day. Additionally, 28.9 percent said that their iPad has become their primary computer. Personally, I use mine as a supplement, but my wife hasn't touched our MacBook Pro since the iPad came home.
Most participants reported spending the bulk of their iPad time browsing the Web (37.7 percent) while 39.4 percent claim to have downloaded between 20 and 50 apps (most people paid for about 10 apps).
There's more, of course, which you can read here. It's an interesting study with a decent-sized sample.iPad owners' usage increasing over time originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - 10.6.5 Server update pulled by Apple
Update: Version 1.1 of the 10.6.5 updater is online. If you're going with it, best to use the Combo updater.
If you were listening in on the Talkcast last night, you heard Steve relay a tale of woe from a client who rushed to update his server to the latest Snow Leopard build, 10.6.5, only to encounter a slew of Open Directory problems -- and with no backup to revert to safely. (Let it go forth from this time and place: Do Not Do This.)
Seems like his buddy may not have been alone in finding the update less than ideal: AppleInsider reports that the update has been "quietly pulled" from Apple's servers.
The problems with the update, as reported on Apple's discussion boards, include DNS resolution issues, LDAP/Open Directory master hiccups and remote storage/server connection drops. None of it good, and none of it immediately subject to workarounds; let's hope there's a patch to the patch sometime very soon.

Переслать - Analyst says Christmas may not be so green for the iPad
There is at least one Scrooge this holiday season, and it's Ashok Kumar of Rodman & Renshaw. While there had been estimates of 6 million iPad sales by the end of the year, Kumar has pulled back to an estimate of 5 million because the iPad, and other tablet PCs are just not "must have" purchases.
Other issues may be difficulties in the supply chain, and the analyst notes that Dell and Samsung are cutting back production due to lower-than-predicted sales. Apple has expanded retail outlets who sell the iPad, including Target and Verizon. It's also been noted bysome observersKumar himself that sales of the 11.6-inch MacBook Air could be cannibalizing the Pad (emphasis on the 'could be' as opposed to 'shown to be with hard evidence).
Apple has estimated sales for 2010 of 4.9 million iPads. Of course it's all speculation for now. The new iOS 4.2 could stimulate tablet sales, and it should be noted that Apple almost always exceeds predictions. Even Mr. Kumar is still bullish on Apple, and rates the stock as a "market outperform."We should note for the record that Kumar's scorecard as a predictor of market trends and product announcements for Apple is, to put it mildly, quite spotty. Take his iPad estimates with the requisite large grain of salt.

Переслать - Apple to release products in China more quickly
Apple has battled a thriving gray market in China over the last few years, and hopes that getting new products into customers' hands more quickly will help to address the problem.
You'll remember that the iPhone didn't hit the Chinese market until 2009, a full two years after the U.S. launch. In that time, a hugely disruptive gray market emerged and continues to operate.
Since then, the delay between U.S. and China product releases has shortened. The iPad and iPhone 4 became available in China just six months after their respective U.S. release, and Apple intends to sell the MacBook Air in November, just about a month after hit shelves in America.
Apple products are becoming more popular in China, despite that fact that they still represent a niche market (Apple holds just 5.9 precent of the Chinese smartphone market share, for example). Of course, these delays aren't entirely on Apple's shoulders, as all electronic devices sold in China must first receive the approval of several governing bodies.

Переслать - Guitar World & Agile Partners introduce Lick of the Day app
If there's one thing we love here at TUAW -- besides Apple, of course -- it's music. And it especially rocks our world when these two great loves meet.
So, when we got wind that Agile Partners (makers of GuitarToolKit and TabToolkit, which, by the way, are fantastic) and Guitar World Magazine were collaborating on an iOS app, well, you can only imagine, the TUAW offices were in a ruckus.
Today sees the launch of Guitar World Lick of the Day: an iOS app that teaches you a new guitar move every day, by the pros. With tutorial videos featuring Guitar World instructors, and the likes of Joe Satriani and Zack Wylde (to name a few), now you can have that master class you've always wanted!
So, how does it work? You download Lick of the Day free from the App Store. It comes preloaded with a few sample lessons, but the idea is that you subscribe to the lessons for either one-month (US$4.99), three-months (US$12.99) or six-months (for US$19.99).
Each lesson is video instructed with a corresponding practice mode. In the practice mode there are settings that control the music notation, tempo of playback, a looping option and playback with a metronome. A "dynamic fretboard" will show your fingers where they need to go, synchronizing with the scrolling music notation. It's all very sharp and effective. And if you're left handed, don't fret! You can invert the fretboard to accommodate. Finally, each lesson has a "performance note" that's written by a Guitar world instructor, too.
We've had a brief play around with the app and can safely say that we are already shredding it up like never before. The tutorials come in a variety of styles / genres of music for guitar: from rock and blues to jazz and country licks.
With iPad and iPhone / iPod touch versions, If you're a guitar player and you're looking to improve your skills and technique, we'd definitely recommend you go and check out Lick of the Day, now! However, if you've never picked up a guitar or you can only just manage Kum-ba-yah-my-Lord, you might need a more experienced friend to help you get your head around it.
Either way, Lick of the Day is an exciting and effective app that we can't wait to spend more time with.
Hit the read button for some PR shots of the app and a video about the app.Continue reading Guitar World & Agile Partners introduce Lick of the Day app

Переслать - iAd will launch in Europe this week
Shortly after the Japan iAd deal was sealed, Apple is rumored to be ready to launch iAd in Europe this week. The Financial Times reports that a number of very big brands are already on board, and that Apple will make the announcement later this week. L'Oréal, Renault and Nestlé are reportedly among the early adopters.
Apple has twice delayed the European roll out of iAd, the Financial Times suggests, because agencies are balking at the US$1 million minimum meant to attract top names. One anonymous advertiser said that many still see iAd as "experimental," and are hesitant as a result. "Clients don't really take [iAd] that seriously yet," he said. "It goes in the experimental category, along with most of the rest of mobile advertising."
Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal suggests the opposite; Apple's efforts have given an across-the-board boost to mobile advertising.
Good luck to Apple and its partners in Europe.iAd will launch in Europe this week originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - iCollect Movies HD catalogs your movie collection on your iPad
MacMegasite reports that Hooked In Motion has released the iCollect Movies HD 1.0 app (US$4.99), which lets movie fanatics catalog their Blu-ray, DVD, HD DVD, UMD, VHS, Betamax, and Laserdisc collection right on their iPad. While the iPhone version, iCollect Movies Pro ($2.99), can use its camera to scan the barcode and find your movies, iPad users will have to manually enter either the title or the barcode, which some users may find a minor inconvenience -- at least until the iPad gets a camera, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later.
Once movies are cataloged, iCollect Movies provides detailed notes from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes along with regions, subtitles, and aspect ratios. A built-in search function allows users to search for all the movies they own starring a specific actor, how many times a movie has been watched, and any ratings that they may have recorded in the past.
iCollect Movies HD 1.0 for iPad syncs with iCollect Movies Pro for iPhone and directly with the icollectmedia.com website. This allows users to back up and share their collections via the Web and other Apple devices. If I hadn't ditched my entire DVD collection a while back, I could totally find a use for an app like this. Переслать - iTunes November announcement: The likely and long-shot possibilities
Is it all about iTunes? Big stuff is going down tomorrow, as you know if you've happened upon Apple's front page today. Our TUAW back-channels are all aflutter as we are brainstorming as a group to figure out Apple's big tease. We've been searching the web, scanning HTML source, scanning the iTunes application bundle and more all to try to second-guess what might be happening.
No, we don't have any firm answers, but here are some of the things that we think might be included in tomorrow's developments. We'll run down our thoughts and discoveries to date, which we will be updating and amending as new facts come to light.
So take these thoughts for what they are -- guesses and observations. We're not certain about any of it, and we're happy to be corrected or pointed towards more or better facts. Feel free to jump in in the comments -- we're dying to hear what you think as well.
