- Adobe gives the sack to Project Rome design app
Just over a month ago we told you about a new content and website creation app called Project Rome that Adobe had released for a public trial. We just got a note from Adobe and a link to a forum post saying in essence ... never mind. Based on feedback from users, Adobe has decided to abandon development of the product after just a few weeks of public availability.
Adobe has not given any specific reasons for canceling Rome, but our own brief trial showed its capabilities to be pretty limited. With all of the content creation software already available and the ease of building sites with content management systems like Wordpress or SquareSpace, Rome didn't seem to offer much that was novel. The education version of Project Rome is completely cancelled, but the "commercial" version will remain available on Adobe labs for anyone that wants to use it.Continue reading Adobe gives the sack to Project Rome design app

Переслать - Oski for iPad is the thoughtful person's word game, with a lot of twists
Oski a word game for the slow thinker. Not for the dimwitted, that's not what I mean, but for the word game player who likes to think - a lot - about her options and to and really plan out the next move. With no randomness and no hidden information, this is a game that invites analysis paralysis. With only 16 moves in each game (eight per player) it's the player who makes the most of each move who will win.
Let's get one thing out of the way right at the start: Oski can be played with a pen and paper. Also, the app is not anything close to the most polished program in the App Store. Still, it's a fun little game - especially when played against another person and not the iPad - and so I think it's worth the $.99 download (Version 1.4 reviewed here). Read on for my reasons why.

Переслать - Infinity Blade hits App Store December 9th for $5.99
Chair and Epic Games' extremely impressive Infinity Blade title has gotten a final release date and price: you'll be able to hack and slash your way around the medieval RPG on December 9th for a purchase price of $5.99. The app will be universal and will run on iPhone 3GS and above, up to and including the iPad and the latest iPhone and iPod touch. Players will be able to level up and gear up their characters as they fight through the world towards the game's big boss, a character called "the God-King."
According to Chair's release, multiplayer won't be enabled right away, but free updates will be coming to the app soon after elease, one of which will allow players to "battle online via Game Center." Sounds exciting. Epic Citadel, the Unreal Engine 3 demo, is of course available for free on the App Store right now, but Infinity Blade will be a full-featured RPG game using the same technology. We can't wait!

Переслать - Microsoft Office or iWork, that is the question
No doubt about it: Microsoft Office is the 800-pound gorilla of productivity suites, both on the Mac and on Windows. In the latest version, Office 2011, the product teams have added lots of zing both in performance and features.
Question is, can you go with alternatives? In particular, what about iWork? The answer is, it depends on the apps that you'll be using, the level of functionality you want from them, how you work, and who you collaborate with. As there are great deals to be had today on Office ($80 for Home/Student, which only lacks Outlook vs. the Business edition), it's worth thinking about the matchup.
[There are other commercial options, like Mariner Write/Calc, open-source alternatives like KOffice, NeoOffice and Open Office.org, and of course cloud apps like ThinkFree, SlideRocket and Google Docs. Today we're talking iWork. -Ed.]
For basic word processing, Pages is up to the task against Microsoft Word. Sure, things are in different places and the lingo may not be as familiar, and that may take some time getting used to. However, if the end goal is to get your thoughts on paper and to have the flexibility to format these words the way you want to, Pages will do the job. And if you need page layout flexibility, Pages' page layout tools makes for a more elegant and easy-to-use solution for documents that require you to position things around.

Переслать - Mongoliad apps out now on iPhone and iPad
We've been following the Mongoliad project by author Neal Stephenson ever since it was announced last May, and the iOS apps for the project have finally been released on the iOS App Store. The apps are free, but you'll remember that the project is actually a subscription-based universe of fiction, so while there are some free things to read in there, you'll have to buy a membership or a subscription if you want access to everything. You can do so from directly within the app -- it's about seven bucks for more than a novel's worth of material, so it's not a bad price at all.
If you already have a subscription, the app will let you access the content you've got from anywhere, and/or download them so you can read offline. Even if you're not a fan of Neal Stephenson (and you probably should be -- read Snow Crash, and then read The Diamond Age, because they're both terrific), the model itself is quite interesting. We've seen a few other publications decide to publish subscription content on iOS devices, but this is the first time we've seen a fiction author publish a novel as a subscription app. It's the kind of model that should really appeal to authors with the right audience -- we'll have to see what the response to The Mongoliad turns out to be.Mongoliad apps out now on iPhone and iPad originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 19:00:00 EST. Переслать - 27" iMac gets an SSD, process is not for the faint-hearted
There comes a time in a boy's life when his latest toy no longer thrills him as it did when it was shiny and new. Engadget blogger Richard Lai found that his Core i7 27" iMac was slowing down as it neared its first birthday, so he decided to liven things up by popping a 240GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD into the box.
Watching Richard tear apart his baby was a bit unnerving to me. I recall opening a iMac G5 about five years ago to swap out a noisy power supply and fan assembly, and I still shudder to think about that.
Richard was armed with the proper tools: a set of Torx screwdrivers, tweezers, a pair of suction cups for removing the glass screen, and the restore disc for Mac OS X. He also had a handy tool nearby in the form of an iFixit teardown guide for the iMac displayed on his iPad.
Richard noted that boot times are almost three times as fast for the iMac after the heart transplant, and the video (after the break) shows it launching in just over 20 seconds. That's still not enough to make me take apart my iMac. Enjoy the video, if you can stand to watch that beautiful iMac being dissected.

Переслать - iMac turned ant farm for sale on eBay
We've seen lots of interesting ways to use old Macs, including the great Macquarium that pops up every now and again. But I think an ant farm is a new one -- that's what this 17" G5 iMac has been turned into. An ebay seller in Hawaii says he emptied out the Mac's insides and built a custom habitat to slide in and out of the unit, and then filled it up with a special gel designed to grow and support a colony of ants. The only issue? He can't get the ants he'd need for the farm in Hawaii, so he's selling the whole kit and caboodle, ants not included.
The habitat is also watertight (though it's a little small), but if you wanted to use this as a Macquarium, that would work, too. Perhaps for Sea Monkeys? I think an ant habitat would be a little more original, however. Just hope they don't get free. As of this writing, the price is set at only $1 with no reserve, so anyone who wants to try using an old repurposed iMac can jump at the chance.iMac turned ant farm for sale on eBay originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 18:30:00 EST. Переслать - Tesco begins selling iPad in the UK
Tesco, the massive global grocer and merchandising retailer, has today begun selling all six models of the iPad on its Tesco Direct website and in select Tesco stores. While the iPad has been available in the UK since May, the addition of Tesco as an iPad reseller is significant, because it is the largest retailer in the United Kingdom and provides yet another local for UK customers, specifically those not close to an Apple Store, to buy an iPad.
Though typically known for its cutthroat prices, all six models of the iPad retail for the same price as the do on the Apple UK Store. Tesco is the second-largest retailer in the world with stores in over fourteen countries, but it is unknown at this time if the iPad will be available in any of those stores located outside the United Kingdom.Tesco begins selling iPad in the UK originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 18:15:00 EST. Переслать - Laplog for iPad molds to your midsection
I get tons of people emailing me asking if they could send me samples of their product to review. Nowadays a lot of those requests come from people or companies that make some form of iPad stand or another. And lets be honest here: there's not much difference between one iPad stand and the next. Some are lighter than others, some have a sexier design, but they all do basically the same thing: they let you prop your iPad up on a flat surface. One stand that does do something the others can't is the Laplog. Think of it as a bean bag chair for your iPad.
I'll be honest, when I first received the Laplog I took one look at it and thought it was designed in the 1970s. Its muted brown organic linen fabric and its salvaged wood iPad slot certainly scream anything but hi-tech. I actually thought I wouldn't even review it and threw it in a corner of my bedroom. But one night while laying in bed, I was sick of using my fingers to keep my usual iPad stand from sliding off my chest so I grabbed the Laplog. From then on I fell in love with it. It's now my favorite iPad stand I've tested. Its bean bag design conforms to almost any surface be it your desk, the curved arm of your couch or, indeed, your lap. The unique buckwheat hull filling of the Laplog also gives it a tremendous amount of malleability which lets you easily mold the iPad to any viewing angle you want.
The Laplog isn't thin, so if you're constantly on the go it's not something you'll be easily able to fit into your laptop or iPad bag. But the adaptability of the Laplog makes it an ideal iPad stand to have around the house, especially for those of you who read books or watch movies on your iPad in bed. The Laplog also works exceptionally well in the car, whether it's the kids using it to support the iPad while watching a movie in the back seat on a road trip or for your driver's side passenger, so they can easily prop your iPad WiFi+3G on the dashboard for easy viewing of satnav iPad apps.
The Laplog is made in America and eco friendly and available for US$29.95.Laplog for iPad molds to your midsection originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 17:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Google releases Google Earth 6 beta for Mac, introduces 3D trees
Google today released Google Earth 6 beta for Mac, PC, and Linux. Google Earth 6 includes several beefed up features including a better integration of Street View with Google Earth's 3D environment that lets users seamlessly navigate streets across the world.
And speaking of 3D environments, perhaps the biggest (and most unexpected) feature of Google Earth 6 is the introduction of 3D trees. Yes, trees. The 3D trees (over 50 different species) are included in several parks, forests, and neighborhoods from around the globe. According to the Google Earth blog, Google Earth 6 includes 80 million trees worldwide. No word yet on how Google has accurately placed the trees inside Earth, but if they can make a car that drives on its own, I'm betting they've adapted the GPS-enabled cameras from Street View cars to fit on squirrels' heads.
Google Earth 6 beta is available now as a free download and requires Mac OS X 10.5.0 or later.Google releases Google Earth 6 beta for Mac, introduces 3D trees originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Grandma makes iPhone quilt for grandson
We've seen an edible iPhone birthday cake, a giant iPhone wedding cake, and Apple icon cupcakes, but here is the ultimate gift to get your new baby interested in emptying your wallet as a teenager -- the iPhone blanket. Six day old baby Gabriel Augusto Stein is the proud recipient of this cool iPhone quilt sewn by his even cooler Grandma Harriet, and judging by the size of it in comparison to his body he will be able to use it for years to come. "There's a nap for that!" says Dad.

Переслать - Things that Mac OS X could learn from the iPad and iPhone
It's kind of amazing how the iPad and iPhone have crept more and more into my digital life, slowly encroaching on my laptop use. Of course the iPad isn't very good for Photoshop or some of the high end programs I need to use at times, but I've noticed that over the holidays with time at home the iPad is getting about 90% of my computing attention. Checking the web, email, weather, flight info, you name it, the iPad is doing it all quite nicely, backed up by the iPhone.
It's also made me realize there are some things that iOS should bring to Mac OS X, and the sooner, the better. Lots of the innovations coming to Lion are going to improve matters, but here's what I'm looking for.
When I'm back on my desktop or laptop I find myself constantly double clicking on web pages to get them to zoom up in size. Of course it's a no-go. I've gotten so used to that feature I feel terribly deprived without it.
I love the iOS software update notifications. Yes, the App Store is coming to the Mac, but it will never have pervasive control like the iPad, because lots of applications won't be sold that way; they'll depend on other methods to let you know an update has arrived. iOS lets me update everything at once. A couple of clicks and I'm done.

Переслать - iPhone owners uniquely loyal to Apple
A survey of over 2,600 mobile phone users in Brazil, Germany, Spain, Britain, the United States and China shows that only about 25 percent of smartphone owners are loyal to their current operating system. The survey by German firm Gfk found that 56 percent of smartphone owners were open to trying a new OS with their next phone, with only Apple bucking the trend with a 59 percent loyalty rate to iOS. Microsoft users were the least loyal to their OS with a 21 percent loyalty rate, while Blackberry came in at 35 percent, Android at 28 percent, and Nokia/Symbian at 24 percent.
Lead analyst on the survey Ryan Garner told Reuters that "Loyalty with a handset is a lot more complicated these days in that people buy into experiences at the high-end level. If a phone doesn't do what it says it will do or what the owner hopes it will do, the maker will lose loyalty."
I am not sure that the only factor in loyalty is the OS itself, because as an iPhone user I find myself incredibly frustrated with AT&T's service. Three of my friends have defected from iOS over to Android in hopes that they can use their phone to make phone calls, even though they would have preferred to stay with an Apple product due to the symbiosis with their home computer setup. But with the iPhone's market share still growing, Apple is definitely doing something right to keep those 59 percent of users loyal.
Is the brand of the OS your only determining factor as to what smartphone you go with? Or is it a combination of OS and level of service? Leave your comments below.

Переслать - Chopper 2 for Mac controlled by iPhone
You've probably seen Chopper 2 here on TUAW before -- we originally covered the app's iPad-out-to-TV feature and then chatted with creator David Frampton back at WWDC last year. With the news of the Mac App Store coming soon, Frampton has decided to port the game over to the Mac, and since he already included a way to control the universal iPad app with an iPhone, he's decided to do the same thing for the Mac. On the next page, you can see a video demo of the app on the Mac being controlled by the iPhone version over Wi-Fi.
It's very slick, and I don't think this will be the last connection we'll see between iOS apps and the Mac App Store. When developers are able to "control" versions of all three of their apps (iPhone, iPad, and eventually the Mac), there are probably many more ways they can connect them up, from straight controls like this to regular syncing of information and other connections. I wouldn't be surprised if we even see Apple get in on the action, both enabling this type of cross-platform compatibility in its own apps (controlling Keynote on the Mac from an iPhone, for example), and including helpful calls in the API to let developers do so themselves.
But kudos to Frampton for his work on this one -- he tells TUAW he wants to have the Mac app ready to go on launch day, so if you're a Chopper 2 fan, you'll be able to load it up and play right away.Continue reading Chopper 2 for Mac controlled by iPhone

Переслать - Apple, ASUS top PCWorld satisfaction survey
Apple has garnered yet another win in a customer satisfaction survey -- this time it's PC World conferring the honors onto Cupertino, as Apple has topped both the laptop and desktop categories for most reliable and well-supported computer products. PC World says that Apple also did well in its smartphone category (with, of course, the iPhone), but that the antenna issues and a few other problems with the iPhone kept it from being listed at the top of the category. Still, PC World has nothing but praise for Apple, which is well-known both for solid, perfectly built hardware, and a software experience that rules out as many questions as possible.
This of course fits everything we've heard anecdotally about Apple in the past -- while of course there are sometimes issues from computer to computer or in certain experiences at the Apple Store, most of Apple's products are extremely reliable. Even when they're not, 9 times out of 10 we'll hear about Apple just outright replacing them for customers, under warranty or otherwise.
Asus also joined Apple at the top of the survey for both desktops and notebooks, and down at the bottom, PC World says that Dell and HP both show "troubling" figures for customer support. Both of those companies still saw increased earnings this past year, but problems in their customer support departments and cheaply made hardware have earned them reputations for trouble.Apple, ASUS top PCWorld satisfaction survey originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 15:20:00 EST. Переслать - GateGuru is free and just in time for holiday travelers
I love finding useful free apps. Today I'll steer you to GateGuru, a free app that will help you navigate airport terminals and find food, ATMs, conference rooms and shops. The app was featured in an iPhone TV ad earlier this year, and has been updated since then with some new features and bug fixes.
GateGuru starts by locating the nearest airports via GPS (U.S. and Canada only, unfortunately). You can also type in an airport's 3-letter identifier code or city name. Once your airport is identified, you can select the main terminal or a particular concourse. You'll get a map and a list of what's there, be it food, shops, or services like shoe shine stands or free WiFi.
You also get user-supplied ratings of shops and restaurants. Sometimes there are photos as well. This is all pretty handy, especially if you are in an unfamiliar airport. You can also add your own photos and reviews.

Переслать - Richard Branson's iPad-only Project magazine to debut Tuesday
Mega entrepreneur Richard Branson is set to release his iPad-only magazine, Project, tomorrow. That's Jeff Bridges on the cover, no doubt talking Tron inside. Plus, the official blog has stories about gadgets, clothing, Internet culture and movies.
That's about all we know, really. There's no word on pricing, navigation, business model, etc. We'll find out soon enough. One can only assume that the super-competitive Branson is thrilled to have delivered an iPad-only publication before Rupert Murdoch. Переслать - AirPrint Hacktivator enables AirPrint for any printer
You've updated your iPad and iPhone to iOS 4.2 and you want to print something... anything... but that printer hooked up to your Mac doesn't show up in the list of available devices. What can you do to make your iOS user experience complete?
As Mike noted in his AirPrint roundup last week, Netputing took note of the re-enabling process that Chris posted about and created a little hack called AirPrint Hacktivator (which now uses a different method than it did originally, see below). You can easily install it on your Mac and be printing like a maniac from your iOS 4.2 device in minutes.
It's a simple, non-Terminal way to fool your iPad or iPhone into thinking that your shared printer just happens to be one of those HP ePrint printers that work seamlessly with AirPrint.

Переслать - PwnageTool offers risky iPhone 3G, 3GS unlock
Those eager to carrier-unlock their iPhone 3G/3GS under the latest firmware (and only the latest firmware) have an option, if the risk of using iPad code does not dissuade them. The iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of PwnageTool that uses the 6.15.00 baseband from iPad firmware 3.2.2, which runs happily on the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as a result of all three devices using the very same Infineon radio chip.
This unlock isn't for the "weekend warrior." A mistake could render your device unable to execute a full restore ever again. In addition, Apple Store employees will frown upon you if you approach them for advice with an iPhone running iPad code, and that's just the beginning. The more patient among us can wait until the team releases an official bundle.

Переслать - iPad, MacBook Air sell well on Black Friday
I visited an Apple Store last Friday and the place was packed -- we had to wait just for a chance to enter the store and once inside, employees were frequently dipping into stacks of MacBook Airs and iPhones. My experience wasn't unique as Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
Along with anecdotal evidence like mine, Piper Jaffray polled 100 Apple Stores by phone to come up with some real numbers. They found that Macs were selling at the rate of 8.2 units per hour per store, down from 8.3 last year. iPads were selling at 8.8 per hour. Gene Munster noted for Piper Jaffray that the iPad was gaining traction among demographics that typically avoid Macs, though specifics on those groups were not provided. Munster concluded by calling the iPad "the Mac of the masses," and it does seem to be becoming just that.
Additionally, the MacBook Air sold quite well on Friday, according to Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank. Whitmore polled 100 Apple Stores over the weekend as well as 50 3rd-party retailers selling Apple's goods. While he didn't provide any numbers, he did quote employees as calling the 11-inch Air a "customer favorite" that was "flying off the shelves."iPad, MacBook Air sell well on Black Friday originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. Переслать - iPad officially debuts in Nordic countries tomorrow
The iPad continues its march towards world domination. A number of TUAW readers and the Swedish Apple site Alltommac.se are reporting that the iPad will finally make it to authorized Apple resellers in Sweden tomorrow.
It also appears that iPads will be warming hearts throughout the Nordic countries of Norway, Finland, and Denmark tomorrow as well. Confirmation of the launch has been forthcoming from official Apple sources as well as from resellers, many of whom are reported to be planning special early store openings tomorrow to feed the frenzy.
The largest Apple retailer in Finland, Humac, ran teaser ads this morning saying that "morning coffee is one reason to come visit Humaciin on Tuesday," with a tell-tale iPad-shaped coffee stain on the ad.
No pricing information has been forthcoming from any of the retailers at this time.

Переслать - Teach small children basic foreign language words with iKidz Pro
Every time I've been to Holland, I've been amazed at the number of languages that many people could speak fluently. Perhaps one of the reasons is that the Dutch start teaching their children other languages at a very early age. I came across a very simple and well-designed app that might prove that's true. iKidz Pro (US$2.99) is an educational universal iOS app that teaches very small children basic words in nine languages: US English, UK English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Italian, Russian, Polish and Turkish, with more on the way. For fun, a baby language was put in that doesn't teach anything but is fun to play with.
If a child taps on a picture within a category, the picture expands to the whole screen, and the written word and picture are displayed. If the child taps anywhere on the page, an animated written word pops in, and the word is spoken in a perfectly accented language of the parent's choice. If tapped more than once, each tap shows the printed word in a different color, and the word is spoken again. That's all it does, but for little ones, I think it's more than enough as an introduction to language education.

MobileBurn has tried out three different solutions that help protect your digits from frigid air while still letting you manipulate your iPhone or iPad without resorting to some kind of sausage.
Gloves from Isotoner and Agloves and a retrofit kit from GloveTips.com gave a decidedly mixed set of results in MobileBurn's testing. Fleece smartTouch gloves from Isotoner feature capacitive pads on the tips of the index finger and thumb. While the gloves are warm and the pads work well, their position means that your finger or thumb have to be straight on to make contact. If you often use the side of the finger tip or thumb, you're out of luck. The Agloves are infused throughout with silver, meaning that you can touch the screen any way you want and still control it. However, the knit construction means they don't keep your hands as warm as the Isotoners, and they are apparently very slippery, making it hard to keep a grip on your phone unless it is in some kind of case.
Finally, the GloveTips let you retrofit your favorite gloves with capacitive tips. Unfortunately, the contact points are very small, and if you don't get them in exactly the right spot for the way you hold your phone, they aren't very reliable. If you've tried out any gloves that let you control a touchscreen, let us know how they worked out in the comments. Check out MobileBurn's video in the second part of the post.Continue reading Three touchscreen-capable gloves tested

Переслать - Apple's Cyber Monday sale cuts prices on accessories
The second half of the Apple Store one-two punch of weekend discounts hits today, as the company is offering savings on select accessories and peripherals like the Twelve South Compass stand for iPad (featured in our recent gift guide). Considering that the store isn't necessarily known for everyday low pricing, these sale offers aren't really spectacular savings; there are a few exceptions, however.
The M-Audio Keystudio 49 MIDI keyboard connects to your Mac with a single USB cable and works out of the box with Garage Band and other music apps; it's $70 today, a solid $20 off of the price you'll find elsewhere. The Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox (a solid replacement for the lamented iPod Hi-Fi) is $40 off; it's also hard to find for less than $390 usually. The Panasonic HM-TA1 HD camcorder (with support for the iMovie-friendly iFrame video format) can be found for $140 elsewhere, but the white color is exclusive to Apple; it's $17 off today.
Also on the special offer sheet today: free signature gift wrapping, to put the final touch on your iPod touch.

For all you trivia buffs who may not know the real story, TV Deck has posted a short video where the Woz explains exactly how Apple got its name. An amazing thing is that Steve Wozniak didn't really know himself until recently. The quality of the video isn't the best, but for all you completists, this is today's geeky cocktail party conversation starter.

Переслать - Trunk Notes: a Markdown-based wiki, to go
I know, I went and used "wiki" and "Markdown" in the headline and scared off all of the non-nerds. Nerds, welcome. If you're a non-nerd who kept reading, well, keep reading. Markdown is an easy way to create HTML, and wikis are a powerful means of connecting and organizing your notes. Your mobile note-taking deserves a peek at this.
Trunk Notes is a note-taking app with a built-in wiki (similar to VoodooPad). It works for both iPad and iPhone and provides great tools for editing (and rendering) Markdown. It also syncs with Dropbox and sends emails in Markdown or rich text (HTML). The wiki feature allows you to create automatic links between pages using WikiWord syntax. It's an extremely fast way to create linked notes with rich formatting.
If you don't know Markdown, take my word for it: it's easy. There is some great documentation included in the app, and you'll catch on quickly. Read on for a dive into Trunk Notes.

Переслать - AirPrint for less: Deals on HP printers for Cyber Monday
Given the options for getting AirPrint working with your existing gear, it's probably not necessary to run out and get a brand-new printer just to enable output from your iOS 4.2-enabled iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. If you actually need a new printer, however, it's worth considering whether one of HP's AirPrint-ready models is suited to your printing lifestyle. For Cyber Monday, HP is offering instant rebates on all the Photosmart inkjets that are qualified for AirPrint use.
While HP's press materials indicate that all of the company's ePrint-capable printers will eventually work with AirPrint, only about 10 printers are ready for iPad printing out of the box or with currently shipping firmware (full list here). Of those, almost all of these are discounted for Cyber Monday, ranging from US$30 off the budget Photosmart D110a (for a total cost of $70) up to $50 off the C510a and $100 off the A910n. All models include free standard shipping for the sale event.
Chances are, if you've got an educational or EPP (employee purchase program) discount, you'll be able to shave a few more dollars off these prices. Our colleague Laura Heller at WalletPop suggests checking price aggregator sites like Fatwallet.com or Dealnews to verify that you're getting the best deal, and make sure that your local office equipment chain (OfficeMax, Staples, etc.) won't beat the price.

Переслать - New MacBook Pro could arrive in April 2011 with SSD, Light Peak, no DVD
Update Put your checkbooks away, folks. Electronista has all but debunked this rumor. By crunching the numbers, they confirmed that (at today's prices at least), such a MacBook Pro could easily be priced out of the market. Read on and dream, but don't expect this machine to appear on your desk any time soon.
-----
Three Guys and a Podcast are reporting that the next-generation MacBook Pro will likely arrive in April 2011 with a new design inspired by the latest slim-line MacBook Air. That means that the high-end laptops will probably dispense with spinning drives altogether and come equipped only with solid-state drives of up to 512GB capacity. If you haven't yet finished ripping all of your CDs and DVDs, you'll want to complete that task before migrating to a new MBP because the internal optical drive will probably follow the floppy into the annals of history.
With the internal speed bottlenecks reduced by the flash memory drives and new Sandy Bridge CPUs, Apple will also work on speeding up the external communication interfaces. Light Peak may finally debut on the MBP, two years after it was originally announced by Intel. Whether or not Light Peak makes it to the party, we expect that USB 3.0 probably will arrive in an Apple product on these new machines. The fate of Firewire is unknown at this time, but it seems unlikely to make the cut, especially if Light Peak is included. The one exception may be if Apple keeps one of the current generation 15-inch machines in the lineup as an entry model. If the 13-inch MBP also remains in the lineup, the new interfaces, CPUs and perhaps a higher resolution display will be what set it apart from the similarly sized Air.
Users are expected to be able to put this speedy new hardware to work with a new version of Final Cut Pro that should debut around the same time. Not much is known about FCP at this time except that it should be faster.New MacBook Pro could arrive in April 2011 with SSD, Light Peak, no DVD originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 08:45:00 EST. Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Cookie Rush
Cookie Rush is an interesting title. The goal is to keep some villagers away from a giant rolling cookie, but instead of guiding them directly, you control them by placing jump arrows in their way -- it's kind of like a group Canabalt where you're controlling the environment rather than the character. Things get frantic quickly. As you go along, you have to dodge gaps and try to get your villagers up to rescue vehicles, there are dogs to dodge, and there are bad guys that you don't want jumping up with the rest of your folks.
I like Cookie Rush. It's pretty original (given that the main villain is a gigantic rolling cookie, it pretty much has to be), and it's worth a shot if you like arcade-style platformers. It's too bad there's no free version to try, and if you're on the fence, you might want to wait for a lite version to come along. But OpenFeint achievements and leaderboards add some fun functionality for just US$0.99. If the idea of the gameplay appeals, it's worth a look.TUAW's Daily App: Cookie Rush originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
