  • Adium offers first look at video integration
When it comes to video and audio conferencing on the Mac, or rather more importantly video and audio conferencing with our PC brethren, there aren't many choices beyond Skype and SightSpeed.

Thankfully, there's hope for Mac users - not only has Microsoft committed to releasing a version of Microsoft Messenger that will allow audio and video chats, but the very excellent open-source Adium project has revealed the new look of Adium's 2.0's (still under development) video chatting in a blog post celebrating Leopard's release.

A version using the new code 2.0 is, sadly, still in the future - and there's no release date for the A/V feature set. If you're wanting to follow the progress of the Adium team, however, as they work towards a release, the code is now available online along with screenshots of what we can expect.

  • Adobe updates CS3 Leopard compatibility info

    Filed under:

There was some doubt about Adobe products working with Leopard prior to launch, which caused no end of consternation among the designoscenti -- to upgrade or not to upgrade? Fortunately Adobe has released updated info (PDF) on the CS3 suite and Leopard, and the news is mostly good. Most CS3 components will work fine under Leopard, with the exception of some video workflow issues with After Effects/Premiere, and some unspecified problems with Acrobat 8.1. Updates for the video applications are expected in December, and updated versions of Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader are scheduled for January.

While this is unfortunate for those who depend on Acrobat for PDF workflows (despite the enhanced performance of Preview in 10.5, there are a few things that Acrobat does do better), it's good to know that the workhorse apps Photoshop and Illustrator will behave themselves under Leopard.

  • Installing Leopard on a PC

OS X and Macs are like chocolate and peanut butter, two great tastes that taste great together. However, nowadays OS X is designed to run on Intel processors, which power most of the world's non-Apple make hardware, so it isn't odd that some folks might want to get Leopard running on a PC that Apple didn't make. If you are one of those people this link is for you.

The guys at Dailyapps have figured out how to install Leopard on a PC, and it only takes three steps. They also list all the things you'll need to get this going. This isn't a supported configuration, obviously, so some things might not work. You're on your own if you want to run Leopard on a PC, but Apple is more than willing to sell you a Mac with Leopard pre-installed.

  • Unsanity urges customers to make sure APE is current before upgrading to Leopard

    Filed under:

Not all Leopard upgrades have gone as smoothly as hoped, which is not unexpected (and why we always back up before upgrading, right? Right.) and not necessarily cause for enormous alarm. One frequent alert, however, has been the implication of Unsanity's Application Enhancer (APE) framework in some upgrade problems. APE has a long and sometimes controversial history, with some developers swearing BY it (Audio Hijack, for example, uses APE to enable the "Instant Hijack" functionality) and other developers swearing AT it (APE's ability to modify other applications at runtime, necessary to enable some tools, can also make app debugging more difficult).

We relayed an early warning on APE (8:31 pm Friday) as part of Scott's liveblog of his Leopard upgrade, but without confirmation from the developer there wasn't much more to say... until now. Rosyna of Unsanity sent out an urgent email alert to mailing list subscribers (reproduced in whole below) recommending that APE be updated to the current version (2.03) prior to upgrading to Leopard, lest badness ensue. Note that v2.03 of APE still won't actually do anything under Leopard, which knocks out a large slice of utility functionality, but it won't crash either.

In general, if you are doing an upgrade install, I recommend an AppFresh or VersionTracker pass to make sure that all your bits and pieces are as current as they can be. Plus, that backup... don't skip it. Really.

    Thanks Laurie!
