  • Leopard Server details posted

With all the excitement over the Leopard client, we neglected to mention that Leopard Server will also be shipping on October 26th. Apple has updated the Leopard server website with lots of details including:
    And more!

OS X Leopard Server will cost you $499 for the 10-client version and $999 for the unlimited version (this version is included with Xserves). Leopard Server is covered by both the Apple Up to Date program and Apple Maintenance Program so if you recently purchased a copy you can get the new version for $9.95 (or as part of your Maintenance).

  • iTunes Plus price drop, 'Today or tomorrow'

Ars Technica first reported yesterday that Apple was ready to lower the price of iTunes Plus tracks from $1.29 for the DRM free music to $.99 which puts it in line with the pricing on the DRM laden tracks in the rest of the iTunes Store. Steve Jobs, and you can't get a better source than that, has confirmed with the Wall Street Journal that this will be happening either today or tomorrow.

Most people credit the strong showing that Amazon MP3 has made to this move. Whatever the cause I'm just happy to be able to purchase DRM free music at a lower price.

  • Google Picasa Web Albums Uploader updated for iPhoto '08

The Mac folks over at Google have announced the release of an update to their Web Albums Uploaders for their online photo sharing site Picasa. The single download actually contains two packages. One is a plugin for iPhoto that adds compatibility with iPhoto '08 and automatic conversion of iPhoto keywords to Picasa tags. The other is a standalone drag-and-drop uploader application. In both cases, under the hood there are more substantial changes involving automatic updating and a new Picasa API. In any case, if you're a Mac Picasa user you'll want to check this out.

Update: Unfortunately, it looks like Google forgot to change the download link and it still points to version 1.0 instead of 1.1. The actual download can be found here.

  • TextExpander 2.0 released

SmileOnMyMac today released an update to one of my favorite applications: TextExpander. This snippet expanding utility automatically replaces typed text "labels" with longer user-specified "snippets." Version 2 adds several new features including snippet groups allowing you to organize your snippets better, snippet syncing across .mac, and even AppleScript snippets "which expand to the result of the script."

Version 2.0 is a free upgrade for registered users, and $29.95 for everyone else; a demo is available. If you're upgrading remember to disable TextExpander before you install the new version (I had some problems with that).

  • Apple posts Back to My Mac information

It looks like .Mac subscribers are going to get a little more out of Leopard than the rest of us. .Mac's Back to My Mac feature is new in Leopard, and is pretty neat. Basically, it allows you to connect to a remote Mac over the Internet and access files or log into the Mac remotely. I imagine this is being done with some sort of dynamic DNS (.Mac keeps track of your remote Mac's IP address and allows you to connect to it).

There is a video demoing the feature on its .Mac page, so go check it out.

In what's been nothing but a busy news day for our favorite Cupertino-based company, Apple has announced that the iPhone is, at last, France-bound. Whilst there's no mention of tariffs, the handset will cost €399, and will be available to purchase, croissants and beret optional, from Thursday November 29th.

Bienvenue a la famille iPhone, notre amis Français!

  • iPhone Dev Team announces free unlock

    Filed under:

For all of you who have been holding off on paying iPhone SIM Free $60-$100, good news. The iPhone Dev Team has announced AnySIM 1.1. According to the announcement by netkas, the software has been tested with both 1.0.2 and 1.1.1. AnySIM offers a free unlocking solution for iPhone users and apparently, if I'm reading this correctly, does NOT fix baseband problems from earlier releases. This is meant for "virgin" locked phones only. Download your copy here. Be aware that as AnySIM works, it switches off your WiFi until you reboot. Also, this is NOT intended for phones that will be updated. Do not unlock 1.0.2 and then update to 1.1.1. Updating a locked 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 will relock your iPhone. The team is testing a 1.1.1 restore on 1.1.1 unlocks right now. Remember guys: although the software here has been tested to make sure it avoids corruption--it does not hurt NVRAM/seczone--it is very new and has not had a lot of field testing yet. Caveat hackteur.

The team is now working on finishing the iPhone revirginizer that will safely revert your iPhone to its shipped (locked) state. You like? Buy the guys a beer or something. Nazdrovyeh!

Update: The team says if you get a "failed to unlock" on 1.0.2, you're still probably unlocked. Reboot and give it a try.

    Update 2: Mirror here.

Update 3: Instructions have shown up here.

  • Lakeside (UK) Retail Store opens this Saturday

    Filed under:

Rejoice, UK Apple fans, for England's green and pleasant land is about to be graced with another Apple retail store, just in time for Leopard's release next week (and the iPhone launch early next month). This Saturday morning, the UK's twelfth retail store is opening its doors at the Lakeside mall in Essex. All the usual paraphernalia of a store opening is scheduled from 9am on the 20th, with 1,000 commemorative t-shirts up for grabs, and the "Digital Lifestyle Collection that includes a 13-inch black MacBook and a silver 4GB iPod nano" offered as a raffle prize.

As ever, if there's any TUAW operatives visiting Lakeside this weekend, do send us stories and photos - and let's hope you score a t-shirt!

  • Apple raises Leopard Academic price

One of the many benefits to working in Higher Ed (as I do), or being a student (other than all that book learnin') is Academically Priced software. Many software vendors offer up their products that significantly lower prices for people in the academic circle. Apple has long done this, but it seems they have adjusted their pricing. Tiger cost a mere $79 with the academic discount, but sadly that steep discount it gone.

Numerous readers have emailed us the new academic price for Leopard: $116. That's right, if you're a student Apple understands you have a budget and will gladly knock $13 off the sticker price.

While this price increase is bound to make some folks grumble, Leopard is a pretty sweet deal even at full price.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Leopard Spotlight: iPhone notes syncing confirmed

It was widely expected but the big Leopard features list page we posted on earlier confirms it: notes syncing of some sort is finally coming to the iPhone. This feature will be integrated into the new Mail.app, and the notes folder will basically be handled like a email mailbox, "so you can retrieve notes from any Mac or PC or access them from your iPhone." This will presumably be possible though .mac notes syncing which is also revealed on the page. Unfortunately, however, it looks like Marker Felt is here to stay.

I just hope that some good solution is worked out for integrating these Mail.app notes with other popular snippet applications like Yojimbo, etc.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

  • Leopard system requirements

    Filed under:

If you're reading TUAW (which you're doing right now!) then I suspect there are one or two things amongst the 300+ new features in Leopard that have whetted your appetite. Don't pre-order just yet though, because you have to make sure that your Mac can handle all that Leopardy goodness.

Here are the minimum specs your Mac will need to run Leopard, according to Apple:
    • Intel, G5, or 867MHz+ G4 processor
    • 512 megs of RAM (though if you only have 512 megs of RAM you should get some more. Trust me, I'm a pundit)
    • DVD drive (Leopard is shipping on a DVD, and your Mac needs to read it to be able to install it)
    • 9GB of free disk space (though I bet if you customize the install and leave out all those printer drivers and extra languages you can save lots of space)
In addition some features have further requirements:
    • Time Machine requires a hard drive in addition to your boot disk (external or internal is fine, I would imagine)
    • Photo Booth requires a camera of some kind (shocking!) and a processor better than a G4. If you want to do those wacky backdrop effects you'll need an Intel Core Duo or faster
    • Screensharing requires a speeding net connection (300 Kbps is Apple's recommendation)
    • DVD player requires a 1.6GHz or better proc for super cool de-interlacing (I hate interlacing!)
As you might expect, Leopard will work better on newer Macs, but older Macs aren't left out in the cold. A shiny nickel to the first person who gets Leopard to boot on a G3 iMac!

  • So what other tricks can we expect from Leopard?

    Filed under:

Along with today's announcement of Leopard's release date, Apple has also now updated the Mac OS X site to reflect all the enhancements you can find in the latest release of OS X. So, what's new?

Apple, clearly keen to show what they've been working on in the last few months (what with the delay n'all), have listed all 316 features, categorised them and allowed you to peruse them at your leisure. Here's just a few that caught my eye:
    • AppleScript can now read and write plist files (whilst a little thing, and a niche feature at best, this is promising if you're wanting to backup items such as serial numbers for applications from the application plist files, and do it in AppleScript)
    • .Mac syncing of more system items (Dock items, Dahsboard widgets, Mail notes and, it appears, even the entire System Preferences)
    • TextEdit now support Open Document and Word 2007 files.
    • Open panels now have a Media Browser tab, allowing you to open items directly from the relevant location.
    • Library Randomization - identical to Windows Vista's Address Space Layout Randomization, meaning that people looking to exploit Mac OS X can't rely on system code being at a specific memory address (i.e. it's harder to persuade an OS X system process to execute malicious code). Whilst Apple has always touted the more robust security of Mac vs Windows, it's good to see they're not sitting on their laurels and becoming complacent with OS X. Also of note is the digital signature technology in all the Leopard applications (and third-party developers can sign applications too). I've always believed this to be a technology that would be used in any iPhone SDK, so seeing it within XCode is a promising move - even if the possible use of Digital Signing in an iPhone SDK is pure conjecture on my part.
    • Front Row now sports the Apple TV interface, and the integration with the Apple Movie Trailer site.
    • iChat has seen a smorgasbord of new features added - Photo Booth effects, new media codecs, video and audio chat recording, tabbed chats, the ability to hide your own local video from a chat window, and screen sharing.
The list goes on. After a somewhat disappointing WWDC Keynote this year, the '300+ feature' proclamation has reassured me that Apple hasn't necessarily lost its way as a desktop OS and computer company. 26th October just cannot come quick enough.

  • The Leopard countdown begins

    Filed under:

Apple has updated their homepage to display a countdown until Leopard day. You'll recall that Apple has done this for the last few versions of OS X. The real question is, did you pre-order Leopard yet? Sound off in the comments! As soon as I finish writing this, I'll be ordering my copy.

  • Road Trip GPS plugin for Apple TV

A little while back, Apple TV Hacks posted on a great idea: one of their readers, Brandon Holland, is using an Apple TV as a carputer. He chiefly uses it as an in-car entertainment center, but it also does double duty as a GPS system using the Road Trip plugin which he has now released over at AwkwardTV. It can read GPS data from "any NMEA enabled GPS via a serial connection such as a USB to Serial adapter or a Builtin Serial Port. Map Quest maps are obtained via expedia.com and both USA and Europe maps are availiable and working!" Unfortunately, it doesn't yet store the maps locally so it presently depends a network connection, but Brandon says he's working on it, and soon expects to have it "so that map packs or trips can be cached for a trip."

Obviously you'll have to hack your Apple TV to make this work, but given its small size and power requirements, the Apple TV seems like a great foundation for a carputer.

  • Apple's 10 year comeback

9rules' Apple blog has an interesting look at the last ten years of the company that makes the Mac. In 1997, everyone from Wired to BusinessWeek was proclaiming the death of Apple, rumoring that they'd get out of hardware completely, or that they'd merge with Sony or even Nintendo (those rumors are still floating around, I think). Then, in 1998, Apple introduced that Bondi Blue iMac, and the rest is history. They became a company known for making simple, beautiful and iconic computer products, and in 2001, the deal was sealed with the iPod and in 2003, iTunes.

And now, ten years later, it's 2007, the iPhone has been released, iTunes is the biggest online music store in the world, and bumping shoulders with even traditional retailers. Apple's not quite on top of the world (let's not forget that while they dominate the categories they choose to dominate, they're still a fraction of the overall market), but there is no question that Apple as a company is going gangbusters. Amazing to see the difference between where the company was just 10 years ago, and where Apple is headed in 2008 and beyond.
