  • Dudes, It's AAPL, Not APPL!

aapl_125I have a major pet peeve with people who constantly refer to Apple’s stock as “APPL” instead of its true stock ticker, “AAPL”. While it just might make more sense for it to be APPL, the truth is that it’s not. So when I see news media, stock promoters and others talk about whether Apple’s stock is too high, too low, or just right (to use Goldilocks terms…), and then follow it up with (NASDAQ: APPL), it drives me a little nutty. My feeling is that if you’re willing to spend over $160 a share on a stock, likely investing thousands of dollars, you should do a little research, and that starts with getting the stock ticker right.

And in case you think I’m reacting to isolated incidents, let me assure you I’m not.

    For example:

    Fox News: October 4
“…the Commonwealth Bank, has used the latest version of Apple’s (APPL) music player…”

    CNN/Dow Jones: October 4
“…Paid downloads of Fox series also are available on Apple Inc.’s (APPL) iTunes…

    CNBC: October 2
“I’ve made some serious fast money on some trades but haven’t pulled the trigger on some others. For example: Research In Motion (RIMM), NVIDIA (NVDA), EMC Corp (EMC), Blue Nile (NILE), & Apple (APPL)…”

    Barrons: October 1
“That’s less lofty an earnings multiple than a pop star like Apple (APPL) boasts…”

    Investors Business Daily: September 28
“Apple (APPL) issued a software update for its iPhones…”

It’s practically an epidemic. Google reports the error as having occurred hundreds of times, even if you include the word NASDAQ. For a company worth nearly $150 billion at the end of market close today, it’s surprising to me that this kind of mistake continues to be made on a daily basis in otherwise outstanding business publications. Can you imagine if they started stating Microsoft’s ticker symbol as MFST or Google as GOG? Give Apple the respect it deserves, and get it right. It’s AAPL.

  • Idiot Alert: Man sues Apple for 'bricking' iPhone

Where high profiles and high profits exist, so do the scum of the earth.

First, Dongmei Li sues Apple for $1 million for chopping $200 off the iPhone. Apparently the $200 she “lost” when Apple dropped the price is now worth 5,000 times what it was a month ago.

Now, Timoth Smith has filed a lawsuit against Apple for ‘bricking’ iPhones that have been unlocked. The ‘bricking’ he is referring to is in reference to an update Apple released that rendered many iPhones useless…specifically iPhones that had been hacked to work with other phone carriers.

His lawsuit ultimately asserts that since Apple refuses to let users use other carriers, they are able to charge more than they would had they “been in a competitive marketplace.” Smith says that as a result of this lack of competition he “paid too much for the iPhone.”

Mr. Smith, last I checked Apple in no way forced you to buy a single item from them. This is a free country and you made the choice to get out of bed, walk your sue-happy butt in to the Apple store and drop some cash on a new phone. You then go and hack it to use other phone carriers outside of who Apple says the phone will work with and now you’re ticked that your phone, gasp, doesn’t work? Get over yourself. Learn some self-control and don’t buy a phone that doesn’t do what you want it to do.

  • Popcorn 3 Review

What Roxio says Popcorn 3 does:

    • Copy DVDs (non-encrypted)
    • DVD-Video Compression
    • TiVoToGo (which only works with a TiVo Series 2)
    • Convert video for lots of devices: iPod, iPhone, PS3, PSP, XBox 360
    • Supports Turbo.264
    • Disc labels
    • Create DVD menus
    • Create compilation DVDs with 4 hours of video
    • Batch “Fit-to-DVD” “lets you que multiple DVD-Video folders for DVD-9 to DVD-5 conversion

I tested Popcorn 3 on a MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.0GHz with 2GB of RAM (a dinosaur in the portable Macs, I know). I do not have a Series 2 TiVo, so I could not test out the TiVo ToGo feature.

  • Top-10 iPhone Optimized Websites

The iPhone does a great job of displaying any website with its Safari web browser and high-resolution display. With the easy touch controls on the iPhone, navigating just about any website is a breeze.

Still, websites developed specifically for the iPhone are optimal because they utilize the screen to the fullest extent, and use less bandwidth (which if you’re on EDGE much, is a necessity).

Below are my top 10 iPhone optimized websites. These stay in my bookmarks and get visited daily.

    1. Facebook - http://iphone.facebook.com/

Probably the best iPhone-optimized website I’ve seen, Facebook has most of the features of the regular website, shrunk down and bandwidth-optimized. It’s super easy to navigate and has me using Facebook almost exclusively over that “other” site.

    2. Digg - http://www.digg.com/iphone/

It’s Digg on your iPhone. It’s fast and very easy to browse. I probably hit this site twice a day to check out what’s new.

    3. Amazon.com - http://www.amazon.com/

I just discovered Amazon this past week. I was in Staples and wanted to check the price of something, so I hit Amazon.com with my iPhone. To my surprise, they had an iPhone optimized version! It doesn’t have the slick design of other iPhone sites, but is 100% functional and loads fast, which is what I want when I’m standing in a store and need to compare prices.

    4. eBay - http://iphone.ebay.com/

After I checked Amazon.com, I decided to look for eBay. They too have an iPhone optimized site, and it’s fast! It doesn’t load photos by default, so you get almost instant search results, and can easily load any photos you want by clicking the “Picture” tab.

    5. Google - http://google.com/

Google Mobile is a great iPhone optimized site, even if it was designed long before the iPhone was released. It loads fast and fills the screen. Just go to google.com and click “mobile” instead of “classic.”

    6. TaDa List - http://tadalist.com/

One major flaw in the iPhone is the lack of a todo list software package. TaDa list is a fast, simple to-do list that I’ve used many times before. I switched to the more robust Backpack, but use TaDa List while on my iPhone for jotting down quick lists.

    7. Leaflets - http://www.getleaflets.com/

Leaflets is a great resource for finding iPhone formatted content and websites. From sports to games to weather, you can find it on an inerface very similar to the iPhone’s native applications.

    8. Yahoo Search (configure in preferences)

My iPhone came setup for Google by default, but I found the Yahoo! search better formatted for my iPhone. The results are similar in most instances, so I use the Yahoo! search.

    9. GoMovies - http://webologistdesign.com/gomovies/demo/

Get movie times and theater inforamtion nicely formatted and fast. I’ve visited several theater company websites looking for showtimes, and while it’s not a problem, the image-heavy sites are slow to load. I much prefer this optimized site that loads in a fraction of the time.

    10. Your WordPress blog! - http://iwphone.contentrobot.com/

That’s right, you can have an iPhone optimized blog with no effort on your part (other than uploading a plugin and theme). I’ve tested it with my personal blog and is as simple as it sounds. Just upload the plugin and theme, turn the plugin on and your WordPress blog is optimized for the iPhone. Visitors coming from the iPhone will get the optimized version.

      UPDATE: iPhone-optimized Wordpress Admin plugin.
