  • Leopard Day in Knoxville

It's finally here: Leopard launch day! So I headed down to my local Apple store in Knoxville to join in the fun (and pick up shirt along with a nice new 24" iMac). I thought I'd take you along for the ride. As per usual with the Apple Store, things were run to near perfection. By 6pm the line was well down that wing of the Mall, and when the doors opened they just started handing out shirts to everyone in line. I got there a little late and so was standing in line for about 20 minutes before I got my shirt. They even sent out an Apple Store employee with a cart full of bottled water to hand out to folks in line. There was an impressive number of Apple Store employees, some of them apparently on the store floor for the first time that night.

Once in the store, we entered another rapidly moving line. We were met at the head of the line by an Apple Store employee who asked what we wanted, then scurried off to get the iMac. They came back, took our credit card with their little PDA-like devices and we were off. As you can see in the gallery, many other folks were playing with the display Macs, talking to Apple Store employees, and generally enjoying the up-beat vibe of the Leopard launch.

As I said before, I was absolutely impressed by how well run the entire thing was. Even though there were hundreds of people there, we were back in the car and headed home by 6:45pm with our precious new iMac. My biggest surprise is that they weren't hawking external hard drives more. Sure enough when I opened the box of the iMac there was fresh copy of Leopard waiting to be installed.

  • Liveblogging the Leopard install

    Filed under:

I've got my hot little hands on my copy of Leopard, and I'm about to install it. What better way to spend a rainy Friday night in Philadelphia than installing a new OS and liveblogging it?

Before I did anything I made a bootable backup of my Mac, just in case bad things happen. Mat showed you how to do this earlier. My tool of choice is SuperDuper, but the app doesn't matter as much as the existence of this backup. As a bonus you'll be able to import your settings from this backup if you do a clean install (like I am).

7:07pm: Open disk, toss aside manual, save Apple stickers and slide the disk into my MacBook (2Ghz Core Duo). Start up holding down C.

Find the rest of the updates after the break.

  • 24 Hours of Leopard: Dictionary

    Filed under:

    Feature: Dictionary

    How it works:
Find a word you don't know the meaning of, launch the app, find the meaning, and rejoice. But that's not all! The new and improved Dictionary in Leopard defines words, it is true, but it also shows you Wikipedia information about whatever term you searched for. Dictionary has also been integrated into Spotlight, so if you search of a word the Dictionary definition will pop up in the results. Dictionary will also translate Japanese terms into English, and contains an Apple specific dictionary chock full of Apple specific terms (I wonder if TUAW is in there).

Who will use it: Linguists, Seekers of Truth, and people who can't spell (not that that ever happens to me).

And so ends our 24 Hours of Leopard. We hope you've enjoyed this little warm up to the main event, and remember if you want to see all of the posts in this series just check out this page.

  • Dressed up right for Leopard release night

We asked for it, and even though I'm kind of regretting it, we got it. On the left is young readers Ben and Austin, dressed for the part (I can't believe no one threw red paint on them) at the Leopard launch this afternoon in Holyoke, MA. And on the right, in the, errr, eMac, is reader Geir Arne from Norway. Boy, do they loves them some hilarious Mac costumes in Norway, because as of this posting, he's on the front page of one of their biggest tech news sites.

Oh man, I can't stop laughing, not just at how crazy these guys look, but just at how extremely happy they are to be dressed up like that and buying Leopard. You guys crack me up. All of these guys (and you, if you send us a picture) will be sure to appear in our Halloween costume gallery on Wednesday, so keep sending those pics in! Sure, you could spend hours on a great costume and show it off to one Apple store in the country, but why not take a pic, send it here, and be seen by all the world?

  • 24 Hours of Leopard: AutoFS

    Filed under:

    Feature: AutoFS

How it works: AutoFS isn't sexy, but it does correct one of the longest standing issues with OS X: connecting to network volumes always brings the Finder to its knees. No longer, folks, thanks to AutoFS. Network shares are now mounted on separate threads which means they won't take down your Mac should you try and connect to a share that isn't available (this should negatively impact the Marble of Doom, but I think we'll all agree this is a good thing).

Who will use it: Anyone who accesses files across a network (including .Mac users, AirDisk users, and people connecting to Windows shares).

  • 24 Hours of Leopard: iChat Recording

    Filed under:

    Feature: iChat Recording

    How it works:
Pretty much like anything else with a Record button -- you're on an audio or video iChat, you press that big red button, iChat thoughtfully notifies your participants that they're being recorded, and off you go. Audio gets saved as AAC and video as MPEG-4 (perfect for iPod/iPhone usage, perhaps a bit less perfect for sharing online) when you're done with the conversation. For presentation use, especially when combined with screen sharing and Quick Look, this instantly creates a no-frills alternative to recordable conferencing tools like Adobe Connect, GoToMeeting and WebEx -- at least for small meetings where everyone has a Mac.

Who will use it: iChat collaborators, podcasters, conference callers, and grandparents/grandchildren -- but only those with hearty hardware, as I'd expect iChat video recording to chew up quite a bit of horsepower. For those not quite ready to make the move to Leopard, ecamm's excellent and inexpensive Call Recorder 2 offers similar functionality.

  • 24 Hours of Leopard: Front Row

Feature: Front Row is updated to work just like Apple TV, but on your computer.

How it works: To tell the truth, I kind of liked the spinning icons of Front Row (and so did this kitten), but the Apple TV interface is nice, too. You can play all of your content (and even content streaming from other computers) straight through the interface, and obviously, DVDs, Podcasts, and Photos are all included in there as well. It's all built right in to every copy of Leopard, ready to operate from across the room with the still awesome Apple Remote.

Who will use it: Anyone watching movies or playing media from a distance on their Mac. And especially those of us planning on picking up a mini-- hook up a video out to the TV, and you've now got an Apple TV that does so, so much more.

  • Aperture 1.5.6

Attention Aperture, there is a new version out. Apple just just released Aperture 1.5.6 which:
    • Resolves some issues with iPhoto 7.1
    • Solves some issues with metadata and sort ordering in the iLife Media Browser
    • Improves reliability
It also makes Aperture compatible with Leopard.

    Thanks, Brian.

  • Wallstrip interviews Fake Steve Jobs

Those stock obsessed folks at Wallstrip, the daily video blog about all things Wall Street, have posted a short interview with the man behind Fake Steve Jobs. If you don't want the illusion of FSJ to be shattered you shouldn't watch this video, but it is very entertaining.

You'll find out why FSJ started blogging, what he thinks of the real Steve Jobs, and his thoughts on the Big Dig.

    Thanks, Dave S.

  • 24 Hours of Leopard: Guest user account
    Feature: The Guest user account

How it works: You've got a friend (well, probably more than one, but for the purposes of this example, just one). Your friend, a curious and look-through-your-medicine-cabinet sort, needs to check his email and get some driving directions on your computer. Don't want to give Nosy McSnoopsalot free rein to peek through your collection of model railroading websites? Just log in with the Guest account; a fresh, unimpaired new user for temporary access to your machine. As soon as he logs back out, the Guest settings vanish into the ether, and the next Guest who logs in gets the default settings, desktop, etc. as if the original guest had never been there.

Who will use it: Sooner or later, everyone, unless you have no friends -- or you don't care who gets their grubby mitts into your stuff.

  • Leopard delivery delays hit some areas

Brian A. sent a tip to say he called his FedEx delivery manager in Huntsville, AL, and they told him that they were backed up with Leopard deliveries. Apparently, they weren't able to make the 10:30 AM deadline in some areas, and though delivery is still scheduled for sometime this afternoon, they'll be showing up late. How late? We're not sure, but hopefully not too late for Apple stores to receive their copies. Hopefully, this is just a hiccup in shipping, and not the start of a widespread delay.

In other news, reader Don also had a problem with his Leopard delivery-- when checking his tracking number with FedEx online, he noticed to his dismay that someone named "Ramirez" had already signed for his package (and he doesn't know anyone named Ramirez). He called Apple and they blamed FedEx, saying that FedEx was reusing tracking numbers, and the signature Don was seeing was for a different package.

And even if you have your copy, you may still be having problems-- Paul got his copy in Australia last night, but says Software Update has been zerged to death. With so many people trying to sign on and get their new apps, it may be a rough road for installers this weekend. Good luck out there.

Update: We've also heard about a delay out of Indy. If you were expecting Leopard in the US by 10:30am, odds are you don't have it yet.

  • 24 Hours of Leopard: Safari 3

Feature: Safari 3 (out of beta!)

    How it works:
Safari 3 is the third revision of Apple's web browser based on the open source Konqueror HTML rendering engine (also known as KHTML). Apple has open sourced its contributions to KHTML under the WebKit moniker. Safari 3 adds a host of new features to Apple's metallic web browser. Some of my favorites include: enhanced search that makes it easy to see highlighted items, it can remember what tabs you had open and offer to reopen them when you relaunch Safari, integrated PDF tools (so you no longer need to download a PDF and open it in Preview), and it is fast.

    Who will use it:
Most Leopard users, anyone using an iPod touch or iPhone. It is the default web browser on OS X systems, so that ensures lots of people will be using it (and even our Windows using friends can get in on the fun).

  • VMWare Fusion 1.1 beta hits RC status

Sure, it's not like you had scads of free time today, but in case you're hankering for 164 MB of virtualization goodness, be it known that VMWare Fusion Beta 1.1 reached release candidate status yesterday, and you can download the new beta (along with a 30-day trial key, if you're not already a Fusion user) from VMWare's site.

I've been testing the 1.1 beta for a while now, and although it's a bit slower than 1.0 (probably due to remaining debug code) it seems to be working very well. If you're moving to Leopard today, 1.1 is what you want -- 1.0 isn't compatible with 10.5 despite enhancements for Leopard listed in 1.1, some commenters report no problems with Leopard and 1.0, YMMV. For those on the Parallels side, recent patches to both 2.5 and 3.0 should keep things running smoothly under Leopard.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.
