  • Which Way Is Up!?

Based on my time spent playing with the iPhone interface, I present to you my new term which represents a very serious condition facing geeks today.

    Scroligo | skro-li-go |
    noun
The vertigo-like sensation induced by switching back and forth between the inverted scrolling orientation on iPhone and the traditional on a MacBook trackpad.

Believe it or not, after limited exposure to the iPhone’s touch interface, and the act of flicking up in order to scroll down, I’ve found myself attempting to two-finger scroll upward on my trackpad in an effort to scroll my browser down the page. The odd part is that it seems so natural on the iPhone, even though it’s historically the non-traditional way of doing things. Apple’s own interface designs suddenly contradict themselves…

Which leads me to wonder if in Leopard - or a future OS update - we’ll gain the ability to invert the direction of our trackpad’s scrolling. Just because it’s always been this way (scroll down for down, and up for up) doesn’t mean it’s necessarily correct (or in-correct). Now that I think of it, I prefer the inverted controls when playing video games (Halo!) as well. I guess I’m just asking for the option to set my scrolling preferences as I like them.

  • Leopard most likely on track for October release

According to ThinkSecret, Leopard is still on track for its delayed release estimate of October.

This gives Apple a matter of a few weeks to declare a Gold Master, produce a significant number of copies and get them to retail stores. It’s a time crunch for sure.

I don’t remember the exact timeline of things with the release of Tiger, but if memory serves me correctly Apple had atleast a month or two of pre-ordering Tiger on their site…which hasn’t been the case of Leopard. Maybe Apple will be ditching the pre-order and just surprising us one morning with Leopard being available.

    Only time will tell.

  • A chink in the AirPort armor?

Is it possible the AirPort Extreme base station isn’t catching all the malicious traffic bound for my home network? I just opened Console to check on an issue I was having with lookupd, but I was distracted when the ipfw.log firewall log file popped up with quite a lot of blocked attempts.

How many? Try 7831 over a two-hour span. Clearly a distributed denial-of-service (dDOS) attack, all 7800+ of these log entries were bound for ports 32787, 32788, and 32789, from 713 different source IP addresses. Thankfully, the Mac OS X software firewall denied all those requests. But it leads me to wonder: Why did the AEBS let them through anyway?

I checked my port forwarding rules, and there’s nothing there that would specifically allow TCP traffic through on these ports. I have exactly one port range forwarded and it’s thousands away from these three ports, which are used, the best I can uncover, for “sometimes an RPC port”.

Can anyone with a stronger networking background help me out here? Is this a vulnerability in the AirPort Extreme, or should those ports be open for a reason that has no clear documentation?

  • Spire releases new line of laptop bags

    Spire Laptop Bags

Spire, makers of fine laptop bags, have just released an update to their line of laptop bags.

The new bags are definitely a bit more stylish and not quite as cold and business looking as the previous line.

Prices start at $80 for the smaller bag and go up to $100 for the largest with three colors: green, blue, and black.
