  • iPhone Dictionary App Roundup

Recently, Merriam-Webster announced that the Collegiate Dictionary was available for the iPhone and iPod touch, and since then I’ve wanted to explore what kind of dictionary options were out there. After all, everyone needs a dictionary right?

The Collegiate Dictionary, although not glamorous in its function, boasts over 225,000 entries, a history of the last 15 searches, and links between entries. Since the app works offline with only a “minimal amount” of memory, I ran to the iTunes App Store to download it — only to have a small heart attack at the $24.99 price tag (ok, maybe just a heart murmur).

So if you’re a poor college student, struggling journalist, or a lost crossword puzzler, you may want to try a few other options out there for getting those precious definitions. I’ve brought a few of my favorites together for you.

  • Mac 101: Sharing Files Between Two Macs

One of the reasons I like Mac’s so much more than Window’s boxes is their outstanding networking capabilities. No matter if I need to add a network printer or share files with someone on my network, it can be done in a matter of minutes.

Setting up two Macs to network and share files can be done wirelessly or wired (if you do it wired just run a regular network cable between the two computers). The following steps are generally the same for both Leopard and Tiger users. There will be a few interface differences, so if you have any trouble just post your question in the comments.

    1. Open System Preferences on the computer that you want to share files from.
    2. Under the Internet and Network section open the “Sharing” folder.
    3. In Leopard, click the box that says “File Sharing”. In Tiger there should be a prompt stating “Personal File Sharing is Off” on the right hand side of the sharing folder. You should always turn personal file sharing off when you are not actively using it to protect your personal information. Under the prompt there should be a button that says “Start.” Click the start button.
    4. Now that you are sharing your personal files with the other Mac (and any other computer around you) can see your public folder in Username/Public. Anything you put in that folder your friend will be able to get.
    5. After your done sharing, be sure to turn file sharing off.

I often use this technique to quickly move mp3’s from my laptop to my desktop because it’s faster than ziping and uploading them to a server.

  • Aqua Hoops: Digital Water-Bubble Basketball

Finding an iPhone game that I really enjoy is a tough task. I like games that fit some basic criteria: they must be easy to play with intuitive controls (pick up and play), they need some type of scoring system so I can compare scores with friends or set personal records, and each “round” can be no longer than a few minutes. So far, the best games that I have found and that fit my criteria are: PapiJump, Brain Tuner, Dactyl, and the freshly launched Aqua Hoops.

Aqua hoops is an electronic version of one of my favorite childhood toys: the water tank basketball game where you push the buttons to shoot air at the basketballs to make them go into the hoops. Features of the electronic version include:

    • Real underwater feel
    • Tilt sensitive physics
    • Simulated air bubbles
    • 7 tiny little plastic* basketballs
    • 3 plastic hoops (not real plastic)
    • Multiple gameplay modes: Free play, One minute drill, Three minute drill
    • Keeps track of your best score for each mode

  • Alternatives to Apple Spaces

Almost a year ago Apple gave us Leopard (OS X 10.5), and along with it came virtual desktops for the masses, in the form of Spaces. For many this was an interesting new way to expand their workspace virtually. For the rest of us [power users?] it was a letdown in execution. What was worse, the third party options looked to be dwindling as well. Last November I called for third party developers to bring the competition - let’s take a look at the result of that call to arms.

We’ll start with the non-contenders of the bunch, of which, sadly are most of them…
