- TUAW review and giveaway: iSkin Duo iPad skins
Filed under: Accessories, iPad
TUAW's holiday weekend giveaways continue, this time with protection for your iPad.
We first talked about the iSkin Duo iPad (US$49.95) in a post a couple of weeks ago; it's the iPad skin with built-in Microban(R) antimicrobial protection. iSkin was kind enough to send three of the units to review and then give away to TUAW readers.
The Duo gets its name from the two-tone color scheme applied to each of seven different models, but the fact that it protects your iPad two different ways (from scratches and from bacterial buildup on the skin) could have also factored into the product naming.
Made of silicone, the Duo skins provide a non-slip surface. The bezel cover (which is black on all of the models) and the back of the lower back panels (about where you'd grip the iPad in your hands in portrait mode) are given a slight texture to make them even more easy to grip. The silicone is thick enough to protect the iPad from day to day bumps and scratches, and even covers the volume, power, and home buttons to keep moisture or dirt from getting in.

Whether you're just hanging around your back yard, going to the beach, or waiting to set off a huge cache of fireworks, there are always a lot of fun things to do over the Independence Day holiday in the U.S. Here are some apps that can help you enjoy the fun during the holiday.
Grilling: Weber's On the Grill (US$4.99 - separate apps for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad). One of the staples of the holiday weekend is the family barbecue, with friends and family enjoying the outdoors and stuffing themselves with grilled delectables. The app has 250 classic recipes, an additional 40 recipes for rubs, marinades, and sauces, and more. You can store ingredients from any recipe in a grocery list for quick shopping, send the grocery lists to others (good if you're sharing the picnic duties), read tips on grilling, and even watch short grilling videos.
Last, but not least, there's a grill timer right in the app that tells you when to flip that steak. I personally use this app with my Weber Genesis gas grill and it's a winner.TUAWFive app ideas for the Fourth of July originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 03 Jul 2010 16:30:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Most of the news about the iPhone 4 has been negative, particularly about the reception and 'grip of death' that causes the phone to lose signal and sometimes drop calls.
Apple has famously responded to all the bad press, and perhaps has dug an even deeper hole for itself in terms of PR.
All the chatter is not apocalyptic though, and I thought it was worth a moment to point out the other side of the proverbial coin, both from a respected antenna designer who has tested the new iPhone, and from the venerable Consumer Reports group.TUAWiPhone 4 defenders debunk reception, 'grip of death' issues originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 03 Jul 2010 15:30:00 EST. Rocket Cop HD is a swipe-to-play kinda game, where you move a vehicle around by making paths. You avoid obstacles, but can shoot from your bases and do a bunch of other neat things for fans of this genre. The video explains what's happening and you can find it on the App Store. There's also an iPhone version.TUAWApp demo: Rocket Cop originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 03 Jul 2010 14:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - SmartphonesПереслать - The iPhone 4 and the growing art of self-photography
Filed under: iPhone
This little piece over on the New York Times Fashion and Style page is only tangentially related to our subject at hand, which is that the onset of the iPhone 4 and its front-facing camera has put a spotlight on the growing art of self-photography and the casually narcissistic tendencies that drive it. I still found it very interesting, both as a series of tips on how to make some fascinating self-photographs, as well as a little meditation on what it means to learn that cameras are slowly turning around on their owners. When cameras were first created, the photographer was almost removed from the equation -- viewers of photographs were given direct views of subjects.
As time has gone on, the photographer has become more instrumental and important in the camera's life. At this point, in 2010, most of the pictures taken today are taken specifically to be shared on Facebook or Flickr -- here's me at the club, here's my new shirt, here's my and my girlfriend, and so on. Instead of looking through the photographer's eyes at the world, the iPhone 4's camera looks through the photographer's eyes ... back at the photographer.
Maybe that's too serious for the Fourth of July weekend (and if nothing else, the NYT piece offers a great bit of advice for being on camera anywhere: "smile"). But it is interesting that, as front-facing cameras become more popular (and even technology like Microsoft's Kinect, which is basically a camera watching you, the player), the art of photography itself is changing. Going out and "taking pictures" may eventually come to mean "taking pictures of me."TUAWThe iPhone 4 and the growing art of self-photography originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 03 Jul 2010 13:30:00 EST. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Photography - Apple - FacebookПереслать - Nintendo passes on iOS gaming
Filed under: Gaming, App Store
Quite a few traditional gaming companies have made their way on to the App Store -- even companies like Sega, who've been around the block with its own consoles, have sold some games on Apple's platform. Heck, even Microsoft has created an app for the iPhone. But one holdout so far is Nintendo, and according to company president Satoru Iwata, that's not going to change anytime soon.
During a recent investor Q&A, he answered the question of whether the company might ever sell software on another company's hardware by saying that other hardware just isn't good enough. "Other companies don't share Nintendo's values or traditions when it comes to creating devices," he said. "We are absolutely not thinking of doing that."
He was speaking in the abstract of course (the actual question of the App Store wasn't brought up), but it does seem very clear that Nintendo isn't interested in releasing software on anyone else's platform. Until that changes, that means no Super Mario Bros., no Zelda, and no other Nintendo properties on the iPhone.
Of course, there's no shortage of games on the platform, and if you want quality platformers or arcade-style dungeon crawlers, you've probably already got them. But it's too bad that Nintendo is standing so firm -- if you want to play official Nintendo titles, it'll have to be on the DS, not the iPhone.

Nintendo - Satoru Iwata - iPhone - Microsoft - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Comedy Central mutes "eyePhone" Futurama parody
Filed under: Humor, Cult of Mac
If you saw Thursday night's new episode of Matt Groening's Futurama on Comedy Central (and let's take a moment to relish those beautiful words, 'new episode of Futurama' -- mmm, yes), you got an earful of biting satire focused on the enthusiasm of a certain company's customers and their appetite for new, shiny things. As Engadget reported, the episode was unsparing in its portrayal of a world where underpaid laborers dealt with the toxic leavings of other planets' consumerist tendencies. Ouch.
Apparently, not everyone found it amusing. As Mac|Life's Roberto Baldwin noted, one of the clips from the show on the Comedy Central website has been selectively muted; when the Mom character says "Introducing the all-new eyePhone 2.0" in the original episode, now there is silence. Wouldn't you have liked to have been an eavesdropper on that phone call.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

The fix from Apple for the increasing complaints about iPhone 4 reception is, not surprisingly, not going over very well with the lawyers representing people who are complaining of dropped calls.
Apple said yesterday it was 'stunned' to learn the signal strength graph on every iPhone made is not accurate, and is displaying much better reception than the phone is really getting. To fix it, Apple is going to recalibrate the display, essentially giving you fewer bars in more places.
Dan Ward, of Ward & Ward, one of the law firms suing Apple and AT&T told me:
We at Ward & Ward, along with many others, are very skeptical of this "fix." While Apple admits to misrepresenting to the public [about] the signal strength its iPhone 4 is receiving, and then says they will fix that problem, there is no indication that this "fix" will actually solve the underlying design problem.
Another firm with clients suing Apple, Mason LLP, told TechCrunch:
Our investigation revealed that users lost reception when gripping the phone in a conventional manner. We believe that the problem is not merely how the signal strength is displayed but involves a physical blocking of the antennae which cuts off calls.
The other firms suing Apple are also not likely to be persuaded by Apple's explanation, so don't expect those lawsuits to go away any time soon.TUAWLaw firms suing Apple not impressed with explanation of reception issues originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 03 Jul 2010 09:45:00 EST.
