- Announcing Trunk, an app store for Evernote
Filed under: Software, Internet Tools
Evernote announced a new extension to their platform today, Trunk. It's essentially an App Store for Evernote, highlighting applications, hardware and platforms created by third parties which integrate with Evernote in various ways. Trunk offers easy access to new tech for users, as well as a means for third-party developers to capitalize on their work.
Evernote has been a shining example of making good on the "Freemium" business model, where you offer a basic service for free and provide an upgrade path to paid plans (in Evernote's case, a $5 per month Premium plan). It's a very common business model on the 'net, but not everyone manages to turn a profit on it to the extent that Evernote has. The announcement of the Evernote Trunk includes the promise of an App-Store-esque model for developers to make money and share in profits.
Among the developers featured on the Trunk and in today's press conference were Egretlist, Voice2Note, SAP StreamWork and social application Seesmic. The latest version of the Evernote Mac client has a button in the top toolbar for Trunk, where you can see services, mobile and desktop apps and hardware which can be added to Evernote to expand its functionality. Some services are free, some are premium. Voice2Note, for example, adds search to voice notes and the ability to add notes via your phone. 5 transcriptions per month are free, but you pay about $30 a year for unlimited transcriptions plus the ability to tag notes by adding "tag with..." to the end of an audio note.
Social notebooks from the likes of BlackBook and Make Magazine are now available through Trunk as well. Evernote also mentions potential future enhancements such suggestions (similar to SpringPad, I assume) and semantic analysis.
Notable, but not part of any press coverage today, is a change in the tag display of the new Mac client. Selecting View > Show Unassigned Tags will trim the visible tags in the sidebar down to just tags related to the current search or selected note. It's a major improvement to usability and one I'd been hoping would show up for quite some time.
Evernote is a free service which can be upgraded to transfer 500MB per month and store any type of file for $5US per month or $45US per year. The desktop client for Mac is free, and so are the iPhone and iPad versions (the iPad app is especially cool). Take a look, and check out the Trunk to see what functionality you might want to add to Evernote.

A new NPD Group survey says that if Apple ever does release its rumored cloud music service for iTunes, there will definitely be an audience. Over 25% of iTunes users polled say that they would be interested a free iTunes cloud service. And about half of those would be interested in actually paying $10 a month for services like music sharing and streaming their personal libraries through iTunes. Out of an estimated 50 million users in the US, NPD says that 15 million or so would be interested in a free service, and around 7 or 8 million wouldn't mind paying $10 a month to Apple.
Keep in mind that this is a survey done in May of this year, Apple hasn't even worked their marketing magic on something like this yet, and it doesn't even exist. If a service like that was actually offered, it's not hard to think that word of mouth and/or a well-marketed feature set would drive that audience even higher.
But NPD concludes, not too surprisingly, that there is an audience ready for any iTunes cloud plans that Apple wants to reveal. Filed under: iPad
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg loves his iPad, apparently -- he carries it with him everywhere, uses it for briefings, and even reads speeches off of it, as seen above. He's checking weather in the places he's heading off to vacation at, and he's reading in iBooks, too -- lately it's "The Fires" by Joe Flood and "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition" by Daniel Okent.
Very cool to see someone so busy and so important trying to seriously use Apple's magical device to improve their day-to-day. And even the Mayor realizes that what he's going is important -- he's consciously trying to go "paperless." Glad the iPad could help him. "It's amazing," he said at a tech conference recently. "I told Steve Jobs the other day, if he can improve on this, it'll really be amazing. I just, every time I play with it, I discover something new."
Wait, improve on the iPad? That's a tall order, Mr. Mayor. But maybe Cupertino will see what it can do.

The iPhone's ongoing technical issues made it to David Letterman's Late Show last night, as he presented a "top ten signs you've purchased a bad iPhone." It's as funny as Letterman usually is -- I especially liked the Pop Tart one, and you even get a nice less-than-sincere apology to Larry King for a previous top ten inserted right in the middle there.
I wonder what kind of cell phone, if any, Letterman carries around. The guy's not exactly technically inclined, and while the iPhone would probably appeal to him if he tried it (how could it not?), he might just be too much of a luddite to even bother.
In other late night show host iPhone news, Conan also tweeted about the iPhone 4's reception issues -- apparently the design flaw in his iPhone is that "people get angry when I talk on it during a funeral." I wouldn't worry too much about that, though, Conan -- Apple will probably fix it in the next OS update.TUAWLetterman lists 'Top Ten signs you've purchased a bad iPhone' originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 15:30:00 EST. Filed under: Accessories, iPod Family, iPhone
iPod car stereo integration is great. You can control your music library with your car stereo's controls. In some cases, you can see track info like artist, song and album information. Best of all, your iPhone's charging via a dock connector while all of this is happening -- that is, if you have a fairly recent integration kit.
While many older car stereo integration kits can play and control music through their iPods and iPhones, they've lost the ability to charge newer models. The reason for this is that Apple re-engineered the dock connector for the iPhone 3G, second generation iPod touch and fourth generation iPod nano onward.
However, you can empower yourself against this annoyance with Scosche's passPORT. The passPORT is a dongle that serves as an intermediary between your car's dock connector cable and your iPhone, charging it while you're enjoying your music.
Scosche has a list on its site with car compatibility information. While my car's kit -- the original iPodYourBMW factory kit -- isn't on the list, it worked flawlessly with the passPORT.
The Scosche passPORT is available at the Apple online store, and at some Apple retail stores for US$19.95.

Viewfinder for iPad is now available on the App Store. I plan to offer a fuller review and an interview with its developer, Fraser Speirs sometime in the next few weeks.
For those who aren't familiar with Viewfinder, it is a search front-end for Flickr. Viewfinder will let you filter for certain licenses (such as Creative Commons), and gives you easy access to the proper links to use for attribution. Viewfinder does not connect to your Flickr account. It doesn't upload pictures, and it won't let you view your friends' timelines. It's meant to help you find pictures on Flickr. We've mentioned Viewfinder for iPhone before, but this is an app which definitely benefits from iPad's larger screen.
You could just use Flickr.com on the iPad for this, but Viewfinder makes it faster, better looking, and easier. If you spend a lot of time on Flickr, it's definitely worth the $9.99 asking price. Viewfinder will save a history of your downloads, making it easier to go back and find or verify license types and links to the images.

Apple's been on a bit of a shopping spree lately. French-Canadian newspaper cyberpresse.ca is reporting that Apple has purchased the online mapping company Poly9. The paper reports that many of Poly9's employees have been moved to California, and that their website is no longer online.
One of Poly9's products was Poly9 Globe, which presented a zoomable, cross-browser globe that could be rotated and manipulated by the user. You can see it in action here at Skype. If this rumor turns out to be true, it will be the 2nd maps-related purchase Apple has made lately. You'll remember the company grabbed Placebase last year.
What's up with Apple's sudden interest in cartography? I'm sure we'll find out via a future software update.

A marquee feature of Safari 5 is its ability to use 3rd-party extensions. Apple is collecting examples of great ones from registered developers to be featured in a gallery. There's no word on Apple's judging criteria or when the gallery will be launched, but Apple is really pushing this technology so be assured that it's going to get a publicity push.
It's also unclear just how Apple will distribute the extensions. A blurb inviting submissions reads "The Safari Extensions Gallery will feature a one-click installation process that allows users to seamlessly install extensions from your website without ever having to leave the Gallery." That sounds like developers will host the extensions while Apple provides the link. Some serious vetting will have to ensure quality.
While we wait for Apple's gallery, check out the collection at Safari Extensions. It's a nice collection that's growing all the time.

The possible, yet highly unlikely event of a full iPhone 4 recall would cost Apple dearly, according to Tony Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research.
He has issued a report with a US$1.5 billion price tag as his best guess. However, that's not what Sacconaghi believes will happen. Instead, he suspects Apple will relent and issue free Bumper cases to those who want them. With an estimated production cost of $1 each, the cost would drop significantly and frankly hardly disrupt Apple financially.
Earlier this week, several people suggested that a recall is inevitable, while others insist that it's not really a big deal. As I said yesterday, whatever Apple's going to do ought to be done sooner than later. While Apple is silent, consumers are seeing stories like this.TUAWEstimate: Full recall could cost $1.5B originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 10:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
On Wednesday, July 7th, ZVRS held a party for 200 people at the Hard Rock Café in Philadelphia to announce and demonstrate its iZ video relay software (a collaboration between Apple, AT&T, and ZVRS) for the iPhone 4. This is a major achievement that will benefit the deaf community.
ZVRS is a company that provides video relay services (VRS); the service allows the hearing impaired to communicate via videophones while using an interpreter as an intermediary.
Using FaceTime video conferencing, the iZ software will act as an intermediary, allowing spoken words to be transformed into sign language (and vice versa) in real time. The service will be rolled out on July 26th, which is the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In the past, the only way for the hearing impaired to communicate was either in person or by way of the TTY (teletypewriter); the TTY is a device that's about as large as a laptop computer, and it allows the hard of hearing to type on a QWERTY keyboard and have the communication transferred. However, iZ breaks that barrier; it will allow the deaf to pull an iPhone 4 out of their pocket and effectively communicate. Now, another technical impediment will be on its way out. This is wonderful news.
At first, the technology will only be available through Wi-Fi and the iPhone 4, but it's a safe bet to say that it will eventually filter down to other devices and be able to use cellular service. For now, though, it's quite a start.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - Apple - iPhone 4 - AppleInsiderПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Osmos for iPad
I first saw Osmos last year at the IndieCade festival in Culver City, California, and a few months back, (creators) Hemisphere Games shared the news that they were bringing the excellent art title to Apple's platforms. Now, Osmos for iPad has been released on the App Store, and it's just as beautiful and entrancing as the original indie game. The idea is that you control a kind of planet/blob thing by floating around a space-field; your goal is to "eat" the orbs that are smaller than you are by touching them. The challenge, however, is that the more you move, the smaller you get, so the goal becomes to navigate without becoming smaller than the orbs you need to eat.
That may sound confusing, but the extremely ambient game is anything but. Excellently detailed graphics, a great electronic soundtrack, and intelligently considered controls make for a really intoxicating experience. I can tell you firsthand, especially since I heard from Hemisphere a few times during the development of this one, that a lot of thought has been put into this title and how to best implement it on the App Store.
The game is US $4.99, but for the excellent experience you'll get from it on the iPad, it's more than worth the price. If you're looking for a great, original gaming experience on Apple's magical tablet, Osmos is it.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Osmos for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 08:00:00 EST. taptaptap, Tapbots, and Macheist have released a very well-designed calculator app for the iPhone and iPad called Calcbot -- it's available for 99 cents right now on the App Store. I would say that I don't know why we need another calculator app on the store, but this one's designed by Tapbots, so it's basically a clinic in UI design for the iPhone: clean and beautiful Retina Display-enabled buttons, gorgeous animations, a swipe-to-access extra set of functions, and the ability to go back and look at past calculations and even email them off. Basically, this is a calculator app you want to take a look at, even if you already have a calculator app.
Plus, Macheist is sweetening the deal as usual -- that 99 cent price is for a limited time only, and if you do pick up the app, you can spread the word about Calcbot on Facebook and pick up a free copy of the Socialite social networking app for Mac, which will allow you to manage all of your various social personalities all just one place. It was a great connection given the circumstances. Unity CEO David Helgason gave a talk at the Develop conference, going on this week in Brighton, England, and had some harsh words for Steve Jobs on supporting iPhone gaming. Jobs previously said that using "middleware" like Unity to develop iPhone games "produces sub-standard apps," but Helgason fires back that Jobs "doesn't understand the economics of game development fundamentally." Most developers, Helgason seems to be saying, can't be jack-of-all-trades with their code -- they need libraries like Unity to do some of the lifting, especially on smaller-scale platforms like the App Store.
Stuart Dredge at Mobile Entertainment is doing a great job of covering all of the other iPhone gaming news coming out of Develop as well -- he's got talks by the developers of Ngmoco's Godfinger, Rolando's Simon Oliver, and Ideaworks Game Studio, the company that brought World at War: Zombies to the iPhone for Activision (that last talk sounds similar to the one we saw earlier this year at GDC).
If there's a theme among everything developers are saying, it's probably that they're finding flexibility a must on the App Store -- while an app may be developed with one feature or pay model in mind, things often have to change quickly during development or even after the app goes live. Filed under: Apple Corporate
Like a league of zombies that just won't go away, Mac clone maker Psystar just keeps coming back for more punishment. In the most recent chapter of this ongoing courtroom drama, Psystar filed an Opening Brief with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in its request for an appeal to the permanent injunction that keeps the company from making Mac clones. Contrary to its former tactic of making all court filings open, Psystar requested that the Opening Brief be sealed.
Apple, on the other hand, made its Answering Brief public and the contents were interpreted for The Mac Observer by an attorney who said that Psystar's strategy seems to be focused on "getting the court to adopt a radical revision of the Copyright Misuse doctrine that would in effect destroy copyright and force all copyrighted works to be licensed."
Apple's Answering Brief noted that "Because Psystar has no proof that Apple has inhibited competition or suppressed creativity, Psystar urges this Court to abandon long-standing precedent and create a new doctrine of per se copyright misuse. Under this doctrine, any license agreement - such as Apple's SLA - that restricts the use of copyrighted software to particular hardware is per se copyright misuse."
Apple also stated that "Psystar's grossly overbroad per se theory of copyright misuse would eliminate fundamental rights guaranteed by the Copyright Act -- the rights to control the reproduction, modification, and distribution of copyrighted works." The court system is unlikely to completely revamp the long-established tenets of copyright law, but the way this case seems to keep coming back from the dead, anything is possible.TUAWApple and Psystar still battling in court originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 13 Jul 2010 18:00:00 EST. One more classic Steam title has been added to the Mac lineup -- Day of Defeat is now available on the OS X version of Steam. It's a Source-engine WWII multiplayer shooter that's not quite as popular as Counter-Strike or Team Fortress 2 (both of which are also available on the Mac at this point), but still provides some Axis and Ally-style fun. Personally, I think I prefer Enemy Territory, but Day of Defeat makes use of the Steam Play feature, so if you already own the game on Windows, you can download and play it on your Mac without paying any extra. If you've never played it before, you can pick it up for just $10 or (even better) buy it along with a few other classic Source titles for $30.
That just leaves the Left 4 Dead line as the last big Valve title yet to be released on the Mac. They've been pretty faithful with their weekly releases, so by this time next week, you could finally be killing zombies on the Apple OS. Stay tuned!

On Thursday, iOS developer Tiger Style will release Spider: Bryce Manor HD in App Store. TUAW was lucky enough to get an early peek at this application. Spider was one of the most popular iPhone games of last year, and offers an interactive puzzle where you explore an abandoned mansion as a tiny arachnid, building webs to trap insects. I gave Spider a hands-on try and, as you can see in the video, I am neither nimble nor quick. I found the game mildly entertaining but a little frustrating -- I think most users who are a little better coordinated will have more fun building their webs and catching their insects but klutzes like myself might not have as much fun.
First released on the iPhone, the game has been redesigned thoroughly for the iPad. Developer David Kalina tells us, "We took a lot of care making the game really sing on the iPad, [adding] an iPad exclusive single device multiplayer game mode called 'Sidekicks' -- it's the sort of experience that you can really only have on the iPad." I appreciated the graphics and music design, where clearly a lot of time has been invested.
The game should be available on the iPad this Thursday for $4.99.
