- Two new Apple retail stores opening this weekend
Filed under: Retail
Apple is on track to open a raft of stores around the world, having largely rolled out the stores it needs in the USA. Still, some cities need extra capacity, so the retail gods in Cupertino have seen fit to bestow upon us two more stores this weekend and another later this month.
Macsimum News reports on a new store in Lexington, KY opening this Saturday at 10am -- the city's second Apple Store. ifoAppleStore reports the opening of another store in Columbus, OH. The following week Philadelphians will get their third Apple Store. Enjoy the expanded shopping options, locals! Filed under: Software, MacBook
PowerPoint stories are like belly buttons: everybody's got one, but some are more interesting than others. The team at Microsoft's Mac BU wants to hear your exciting, engaging and unique PPT adventures, and they're willing to reward you: the best story might win a major prize.
Unlike the "forward this email, Bill Gates will send you money" chain emails that never seem to die, Microsoft's contest is legit. There are a couple of custom-colored MacBook Pros in the pot, delivered to winners selected from those who participate by commenting on the Mac Mojo blog or responding to questions tweeted by the @officeformac account. The computers will be loaded up with Office 2008, and winners will also receive a copy of Office 2011 when it ships.
Full details and rules are downloadable (as a PDF, interestingly enough -- remember, Apple's TextEdit can also open Word's .doc format) and the Mac BU will be posting updates on Twitter and on the Mac Mojo blog.

iBooks gives you a great way to organize ebooks and PDF's, but what about audiobooks? Unfortunately, iTunes still blobs everything together like a big ol' playlist in iTunes. AudioBookShelf is an app designed to make your audio book shelf more enticing. Unfortunately it won't play the audio books in iTunes, giving you instead 12 hand-picked audio books from a library of classics. Favorites like Treasure Island and Gulliver's Travels (one of my favorite books) are read with clear voices, as the developers looked to only include those with quality recordings. See the video for the app in question, or visit the App Store to see the official description and full list of books included in the price of $1.99. The app is universal, so one price puts it on the iPad and iPhone.TUAWApp demo: AudioBookShelf originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 16:00:00 EST. I guess we can take potshots at AT&T all day, but the proof is in the pudding. Or activations, in this case: 3.2 million iPhone activations in Q2, which is 10 times the number for the 3GS the year before. Oblivious to the noise about AT&T's network, a full 27% of those activations are new customers for AT&T, which has to be chafing someone's drawers over at Verizon. Here's hoping AT&T takes the $30.8 billion in revenue and sinks it right back into infrastructure or lowering cost to consumers. Full press release from AT&T here.

IPhone - AT&T - Verizon - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppleПереслать - TUAW review and giveaway: Twelve South Compass iPad stand
Filed under: Accessories, iPad
The folks from Charleston, SC have done it again.
Twelve South, the clever design house that only makes Apple accessories, has come out with the latest in a string of popular and stylish goodies. We've given away a number of their products, including the BookArc for MacBook, BassJump woofer speaker for MacBook, and the BackPack shelves for iMacs and Cinema Displays.
Yesterday we heard of a new iPad stand from Twelve South, and our initial reaction was a yawn -- everybody and their brother has come out with an iPad stand, and most of them are clunky, ugly, or weigh as much as the iPad. Upon further reading of the press release, we decided differently, and immediately worked with Twelve South to review and give away two of these amazing stands. They shipped a couple of the stands overnight, and we received them this morning.
The Compass (US$39.99) gets its name from the drafting tool, not from the device you use to determine where magnetic north is. Folded into its travel case (included), the Compass takes up a space just 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 1 inch (2.54 cm) wide. The Compass can be deployed in two modes. In the first, it looks like a tripod with the two compass-like legs holding the iPad and a third, thicker leg keeping the assembly upright. In this way, you can view the iPad in either portrait or landscape orientation. The second mode holds the iPad up in a slightly tilted configuration that is perfect for typing.

Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Twelve South - BassJumpПереслать - Safari exploit gives your contact info to malicious websites
Filed under: Software
In a report on security in the first half of 2010 Apple has claimed the top spot in the number of security vulnerabilities in their OS and software. According to a report from the security company Secunia, Apple is followed by Oracle and then Microsoft in the number of security flaws reported. It's worth noting that this report does not weigh the severity of these vulnerabilities, only the overall number of them.
Safari itself ranks slightly better in the number of vulnerabilities found in 3rd party applications, taking the number two spot right after Mozilla's Firefox. It may not come as any surprise then that a major Safari exploit was publicly reported yesterday by Jeremiah Grossman, the founder of WhiteHat Security.
The exploit lets malicious sites retrieve your personal data from your Address Book in both Safari 4 & 5 if you have enabled the option to allow Safari to AutoFill web forms with your Address Book info. The exploit does not require the user to even see the forms, it can all happen automatically without you having any idea that you just gave the site your name, company, city, state, country, email and other form data you may have added to your Address Book entry.
It's important to note that this vulnerability does apply to Safari for Windows as well, but it will only grab the personal information you've explicitly typed into Safari directly.
Jeremiah also mentions that he did report this vulnerability privately to Apple on June 17th.

An upcoming free iPhone app, FacePlant, hopes to change all of that. FacePlant is from the same folks who brought you 12seconds and Rally Up, so they had the necessary savvy to supply both the video messaging piece and the social networking feel that FacePlant provides.
Here's the concept: you sign up for a free FacePlant account, which consists of your name and iPhone 4 number. The app goes through your contacts list, and if there's anyone in that list who is registered with FacePlant, they show up on a list of contacts. If they're ready and willing to talk, their name shows up surrounded by a bright orange bar; if they're offline, their name is outlined in gray. With the imminent demise of UIGetScreenImage, a number of readers have asked me how they can use the newer AVFoundation approach to access screen data in their iPhone applications. I went ahead and built some sample code that, when I'm finished messing with it, will be part of chapter 7 of my revised cookbook. I have uploaded the current version to github. It consists of a simple helper class that allows you to start and stop a capture session.
You can request an image from this helper (namely, the last captured image from the buffer), which in this example is loaded into a central image view at the end-user's request. You can also ask it for a view with an embedded preview, using the current session. The example project adds that preview to the navigation bar.
I threw this example together pretty quickly, and as always, I welcome suggestions and improvements.TUAWdevsugar: Accessing an iPhone camera capture session originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

If you thought Apple wasn't serious about quality you haven't been paying much attention for the past decade. In addition to making better hardware every year (with the exception of iBook keyboards), Apple has now promoted Jeff Williams to Senior VP of Operations; he'll be working alongside Tim Cook (Apple's COO, possibly the successor-designate to Steve Jobs) to ensure the company's products are of the highest quality.
Williams will also keep an eye on the supply chain management side, a critical element in keeping costs low while pushing quality into the stratosphere. As AppleInsider reports, Williams cut his teeth at IBM before moving to Apple, and his expertise in supply chain management shone as he helped get the pieces for the iPod back when it was largely "off the shelf" components -- the shelves being mostly located in China. Williams was instrumental in global rollouts of the iPod and, more recently, the launch of the iPhone. Filed under: Education
Barnes & Noble is diving deeper into the education market with an expected August release of NOOKstudy which will run on Macs and PCs and not require a NOOK or any other mobile device. NOOKstudy will act as a hub for eTextbook, class notes, syllabi, scanned handouts, and even non-educational eBooks. It will allow students to take notes as well as highlight passages in eTextbooks. Users will also be able to tag items for easy retrieval using common terms like: "for the final exam". It will provide full searches of anything, in the eTextbooks or your notes, and link into Google or Dictionary.com to look up terms.
Multiple eTextbooks can be opened at the same time, or two pages from different sources can be simultaneously displayed.
The program is currently being piloted at Penn State, University of Nevada, Queensborough Community College, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Comic-Con starts in San Diego today, and I'm down here wandering the aisles, looking for geeky gear and cool games. Scott Pilgrim is already one of the stars of the show, with the excellent comic series having finished up, a new console game coming out soon, and of course the Michael Cera-enhanced movie in theaters in a few weeks. To celebrate, NBC Universal has released this free retro Punch-out game starring the characters from the movie. It's not quite as good as the upcoming console game, but it's an amusing little retro distraction that fans of the movie will get a kick out of.
The app's also connected up for Comic-Con -- it's got news and updates straight from the convention floor, and there is a trailer and gallery from the movie to unlock. Yes, it's adware -- if you have no interest in the movie, there's not really a reason to download the app. But if you're already interested in Scott Pilgrim and want a little more fun from the franchise on your iPhone during Comic-Con, definitely check this one out.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Pilgrim's Punch Out originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 08:00:00 EST. We love iPhone/iPad vs. unwitting criminal stories, especially ones that end happily. Across this category, though, it's hard to hold a candle to the story of Jordan Sturm, Horatio Toure, and one particular purloined iPhone.
The iPhone in question is owned by Covia Labs, and it was being used to test the company's Alert & Respond software for police officers and military personnel. CEO David Kahn had asked Sturm to step outside -- with a phone running A&R's GPS live tracking app -- so he could demonstrate the geographic tool to his PR folk. Moments after she walked out the door, the system came to life... and showed an indicator heading off down the street at high speed. Oops.
Sturm ran back inside, they called police; Toure was arrested ten minutes later and about half a mile away, in possession of the stolen phone. Unlucky for him, but lucky for Covia Labs; they saved the cost of a new iPhone and gained a whole bunch of free publicity.
Note: Several commenters are insinuating that this theft was set up as a stunt to provide exposure for Covia Labs. There is absolutely no evidence to support that theory at this time; the suspect was arrested and details on his arrest were provided by the SFPD, per the original SFGate story. The suspect was booked on felony charges and placed in jail.

This is really wild -- Japan's Aircord lab has used the iPad to create a 3D effect, but not what you'd think, with the standard glasses and views. Instead, the iPad is used to project a set of three images onto a specially-coated glass pyramid, which then reflects the three video images in all directions, creating a 3D effect as you move around the display.
You can see the thing in action in the video after the break -- it's not completely perfect (obviously, when you hit a seam while moving around, the image distorts and breaks up), but there is a definite projected hologram feel to it as you look head on. And really, any high resolution display could be used here, but I'm sure the iPad is the cheapest and most handy option for something like this. Very cool idea for sure -- it's tough to think of a real application (maybe a museum installation is the most obvious use), but it is a neat effect.

Gameloft isn't the only company having a sale this week -- Capcom has also put most of its iPhone titles on sale for Comic-Con: You can pick up the great Phoenix Wright for just $2.99, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Dark Void Zero and Mega Man 2 for just 99 cents, or Street Fighter IV for $6.99.
Good set of deals to choose from there. I think that big EA sale a while back set a precedent for price drops like this -- a nice discount on a game quite a few people have been waiting to play can definitely send it catapulting into the top lists on the App Store. To join in from your Mac or PC, just go to the next page by clicking the link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a live stream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to join in on the fun by asking questions or making comments.
If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application.
We haven't forgotten about iPad users, as you can tune in to TUAW TV Live on your iPad! That link will send you to a non-Flash page, although you won't have access to our chat tool.

The latest hotness wandering around the blogs is this iPad app called Flipboard, which turns your favorite social network content into an easy-to-read magazine-styled layout. It does look good -- the idea is that pictures and text are all pulled in from various social feeds, and then assembled together by the app to make a full-color, full-featured magazine that you can flip through instead of pulling up various feeds and/or running a bunch of different clients. We saw a similar app at WWDC this year that pulled content from RSS and styled it in a magazine fashion.
Personally, I'm not entirely sold -- I have the same problem with this app as I did with RSS readers for a long time, which is that I like to see content in the format it's generated for. If someone likes something or posts a link on Facebook, I'd rather see what it looks like in the same space they created it for, not crammed into an app's magazine-style formatting. You may make the argument that information is increasingly growing context in-sensitive, and you'd be right -- I do use an RSS reader now, after many years of trying to read blog items on their own blogs, and social networks are growing more interchangeable as they fight to find their own spots in your attention.
Flipboard may work well (and at the low, low price of free, it's hard to argue against at least trying it out, though word is that the servers are hammered at launch), but I think there's still something to be said for seeing your tweets in your Twitter client and your friends' pictures on Flickr. I'm not quite ready to completely separate all of my social network content from its original form quite yet.TUAWFlipboard turns social network content into a virtual magazine originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 16:00:00 EST. Apple hasn't traditionally been a company that calls out its competition by name, but that's not the case with this Antennagate campaign -- it's posted a video and added information to its page calling out the Nokia N97 mini for suffering from the same issues the iPhone 4 is getting complaints about. In the video above, you can clearly see that yes, holding the Nokia phone by its antenna will cause the signal bars to drop.
Honestly, though, I'm not really sure what Apple is trying to say with this page and these phone comparisons. Yes, Apple, you win -- your phone is just as bad as everyone else's? Don't get me wrong -- I haven't picked up an iPhone 4 yet, but only because I haven't been able to find one. The reception issues don't really bother me. Still, I think it's the wrong tack for Apple to take just putting their phone alongside everyone else's and saying this is an industry-wide issue. I bought my original iPhone (and will buy the iPhone 4) because it's better than everyone else's, and it's weird to see Apple apparently trying to convince me otherwise.

iPhone - Apple - Nokia N97 - Nokia - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Get the New York Times on iPad via BN... sort of
Filed under: iPad
Update: Barnes & Noble's PR team pinged us to point out two salient points. #1, the message above does in fact note that only the iPod touch and iPhone versions of the newspaper/magazine subscriptions are temporarily offline -- the iPad subs are still available, as I found. #2, via the "Go To" button at the top of the eReader app screen, you can access an abbreviated table of contents (a list of the paper's sections); that's a help, but still not a particularly well-adapted navigational approach for all the stories in the NYT. My apologies for the errors.
We got the heads-up from reader Jehuda S. that Barnes & Noble is now listing the New York Times as available for subscription or single-copy download into the company's B&N eReader app. A quick check of B&N's site does indeed show the paper available for $0.99 a day, or $19.99 for a monthly subscription -- the monthly price is the same as Amazon's Kindle version, but that edition isn't available for iPhone or iPad yet. Amazon's deal with the NYT is a possible explanation for the kneecapped Editor's Choice app, which doesn't offer the paper's full content.
Great, so the paper's ready for prime time on the iPad courtesy of Mr. Barnes and Mr. Noble? Well, not so much. First of all, even though I was able to go through with the $0.99 purchase of today's paper [for my iPad], the site is featuring a banner update as seen above -- newspaper delivery is being 'temporarily suspended' to theiDevicesiPhone and iPod touch, with a 'better reading experience' around the corner.
That's good, because the current reading experience is downright cringeworthy. There's no navigation to speak of except for section front pages and 'next story' / 'previous story' -- in order to see the whole paper, you have to scroll via the page scroller at the bottom (today's edition shows as 525 screensful, not easy to manage). There's no master table of contents,no overall list of sections, no moxie whatsoever. It's a bit like someone faxing you the New York Times, story by story -- not at all a positive way to consume this premium content.
I can't recommend you get the Times in this fashion until B&N revamps the reader; good news is, it looks like there's consensus on that point over at B&N.

Twenty-four hours later the book's title and cover has been removed from Amazon France, yet "iLife '10" still remains in the book's description.
Today, reader Flo from Germany notified us that she discovered an iWork '10 book on Amazon Germany. The iWork book is titled iWork 10: From Zero to Hero and is set for release on October 10. We've also found the same book on Amazon France. Apple has traditionally released updated versions of iLife and iWork at or around the same time. Given that this is the second book (from a separate publisher) that seems to corroborate that updated iLife and iWork suites are in the works, it's looking increasingly likely that we can expect them by the fall. This is really awesome. While there are rumors that an iPhone 4 Steadicam is in production, Spencer Watson didn't wait -- as you can see above, he went ahead and built a Steadicam-type rig for his own iPhone out of some parts he had sitting around. As you can see from the video it takes, it works pretty well. While you probably wouldn't want to use it in place of a professional rig (the iPhone isn't really meant for high-motion video, and it looks like he's applied some other stabilization filters), it definitely looks better than if the iPhone was on its own.
You can pick up some of the parts he used in his online store, but it all looks pretty easy to put together. All together, he says it was about $40 of parts from Home Depot or a skate store, and I'm betting it's about a weekend of work. Very cool.
