In the tradition of the "30 years of Apple in 2 minutes" video we recently featured, here's a well-photographed, albeit incomplete, look at some of Apple's best designs. It starts off with the "beige angles" of the Apple II, Lisa and Macintosh before progressing to the "dark portables" (Apple QuickTake and PowerCD) and "translucent colors" (eMate and G3 iMac).
It ends with "glass and aluminum," showing off the current-generation iMac, iPhone 4 and iPad. It's well shot and that ethereal music makes me feel like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are going to pop up at any moment. Well done, Matt's Macintosh! You obviously love your machines, and we can't blame you.TUAWFound Footage: Beautiful Apple design originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 21:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
The wire services and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that the Citi Mobile app that Citibank offered to customers has a security flaw, and that it saved personal account information in a hidden file on users' iPhones. Our own Mike Rose reports that he got one of Citi's letters to customers warning them about the security issue.
The information saved on the iPhones included account numbers, bill payment information, and even security access codes. If customers synced their phones to a Mac or PC that information would also be on those computers and could theoretically be accessible by hackers.
"We have no reason to believe that our customers' personal information has been accessed or used inappropriately by anyone," Citi said.
The newest version of the Citi app is online and is listed as a 'mandatory' update for customers.

This morning we noted that many people who ordered their free black iPhone 4 bumper from Apple as part of the free case program were being notified that the item would ship with 3 to 5 weeks. Now we're receiving tips from TUAW readers who are telling us that they're already receiving shipping notices from Apple for bumpers that were ordered last week.
If this is a general trend (perhaps our readers were the first people to order their bumpers) and not a fluke, it could be a sign that canceled bumper orders are being rerouted to the free case program. Travis from Houston is receiving his bumper by the 2nd of August, and we've heard from other readers that their bumpers are in the mail as well for delivery about the same time.
If you haven't yet ordered your free iPhone 4 bumper or case, be sure to download and install Apple's free iPhone 4 Case Program app before the September 30th cutoff date.
Thanks to Nate, Iggy (in the UK), and Travis for the tips!TUAWFree iPhone 4 bumpers starting to ship originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 19:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - Houston - HandheldsПереслать - MyTown adds product check-ins
Filed under: iPhone
Booyah's very popular MyTown app has updated again, this time bringing some more innovation to the "check-in" idea. Instead of just checking in to locations, the app will now "check-in" to various products with the iPhone's camera. So when you use a certain product, you can use the camera to scan a barcode, and presumably, MyTown will recognize it, add it to your check-in history, and then reward points and progress as usual.
Of course, this also means that Booyah will get a list of your favorite products and merchandise, which CEO Keith Lee says is "a holy grail for marketers and brands" in the press release. It seems a little unfair to take such valuable information from consumers while simply rewarding them with a few achievement points and virtual stickers, but MyTown definitely has a following, and the app's fans can't seem to get enough of their virtual collecting. The app will eventually include other types of gaming in the service, like scavenger hunt for certain items
On the plus side for Booyah, this just means that marketers and brands will be even more interested in supporting the app. We can expect to see even more agreements with real-world businesses from them in the future.TUAWMyTown adds product check-ins originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 19:00:00 EST. Booyah - MyTown - Keith Lee - iPhone - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Survey: 73% of iPhone users are fine with AT&T's service
Filed under: iPhone
If you're the kind of person who loves quoting that ".5%" number given by Jobs at the press conference a few weeks ago as proof that AT&T's reception problems are overblown, you'll love this. A new survey released by Yankee Group says that 73% of iPhone users polled are actually "very satisfied" with their cell phone service. In fact, only 69% of smartphone users in general say they're happy with their provider, so not only is AT&T's service satisfactory according to this survey, but it's actually better than other services. Why is AT&T so hated when their service is actually good?
Yankee Group explains: it's not that the service is great, it's more that the phone is awesome. Customers really love their iPhones, and so even when the reception isn't very good, the overall experience scores high. AT&T says it's just a perception problem: "There's a gap between what people hear about us and what their experience is with us. We think that gap is beginning to close," according to a spokesman.
I'll say this: I carried my iPhone all over San Diego at Comic-Con last week, and the reception I got was just plain terrible. My net connection barely worked, calls were dropped, and I couldn't check email even when I needed to. But I'll admit that the AT&T problems exist in a strange place -- not only does the iPhone's otherwise shining example of user experience helping to outweigh AT&T's problems, but customers' high expectations for the iPhone probably have something to do with all of the complaining as well.TUAWSurvey: 73% of iPhone users are fine with AT&T's service originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 18:30:00 EST. AT&T - iPhone - Yankee Group - Smartphone - AppleПереслать - Time and journal your meditations with Equanimity
Filed under: iPhone
Recently I was searching the App Store for meditation timers. It's quite distracting to glance at a clock while you're meditating, and conversely quite freeing to know that a chime will sound when you're done, so you can just concentrate and get to it.
Of course, it's simple to use the iPhone's clock app to set a timer, and I was content with that for a long time. Then I came across Equanimity and have abandoned the clock. With great features like a journal, preparation and cool-down modes and a progress tracker, Equanimity has become a part of my daily routine.
First of all, it avoids images of lotus flowers, sunsets and Buddha statues. While nice, I find them less-than-useful in this situation since the whole idea is to ignore the app. Instead, it provides the simplest white interface. To begin a session, flip the app over. Select a preparation time (I use 30 seconds) and a cool down time if you like. This simply chimes once to let you know that you've got a pre-determined amount of time -- say, 1 minute -- to go.
Once that's done, flip the app back over. A summary of your session is displayed (see above) along with a button that reads "Start Meditation." The gong sounds and you've begun. If you chose to glance at the app while you sit, you'll notice that the circle gradually fills with grey as time progresses.
Once you're done, you're prompted to write about the day's session in the journal. From there, you can turn the iPhone on its side to view some stats on your meditation history (see an example in the gallery below), like recent sittings, number of consecutive sessions, total practice hours and amount of meditation done per month. It reminds me of the way Gas Cubby displays stats when the app is in landscape orientation, which I like very much.
At US$4.99, it's a great timer with super extras. I recommend it highly. Now go sit!

iPhone - App Store - Apple - IPod Touch - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Rumor: TiVo stock climbs on talk of deal with Apple for new Apple TV
A small post in Barron's noted today that TiVo shares have jumped up about 5% today on rumors that the company's DVR technology may be included in the next iteration of the Apple TV.
TiVo's Premiere device has greater functionality than the Apple TV, with the ability to record up to 150 hours of HD video (with the Premiere XL), on-demand video streaming from Netflix, Amazon Video, and YouTube, viewing of photo libraries on TV, and a choice of music and photo streaming services.
There has been a lot of speculation as of late that Apple may be poised to make the Apple TV more than just a hobby. With Google TV just around the corner and Google making deals with Sony, Logitech, Intel, and the Dish Network, Apple may be looking for partners to help jump-start a revival in the neglected Apple TV.
As noted in Barron's:"Is it true? Who knows?"

Our own Steve Wozniak is scheduled to appear on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory sometime later this year, the cast and crew told an audience at their Comic-Con panel this weekend. Woz is already no stranger to television, of course, but I think this is the first time he's appeared on a non-reality show, so we'll get to take a look at the guy's acting chops. There weren't any details on who he'd be playing (presumably himself), or how he came into contact with the show's four nerdy scientists and/or their pretty neighbor.
I like the Big Bang Theory -- while it does succumb to the sitcom genre's usually corny conventions, it's a pretty smart show, and the nerd references are sincere and constant (geekstar Wil Wheaton has also appeared on the show a few times, and I remember seeing Firefly's Summer Glau and BSG's Katee Sackhoff on there as well). Plus, it's always great to see Woz out and about -- we'll keep an eye out for his appearance on the show's season four this year.TUAWWoz coming to the Big Bang Theory originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 17:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Yes, you're getting a bumper for free, but why not wrap your iPhone 4 in something a little more stylish and original? Vaja has released a line of its great premium leather gadget cases for the iPhone 4 -- I love these things, as they're made out of high-quality premium leather, and add an extra little bit of class to a device that already feels like a luxury phone.
I do have to say that I don't really like that flap -- I use a Vaja case on my iPod, and in that case, the magnetically-fastened flap comes in handy, since I don't usually have my iPod open. But on the iPhone, I interact with the touchscreen so much that the flap would get in the way. But Vaja also has some excellent cases (like the iVolution Grip) that just slide onto the iPhone and stay out of your way.
They're not cheap -- the Grip runs $65, and they go up from there. But they are a quality product. While the bumper cases are all right, if you want something really nice to wrap your iPhone in, give Vaja's cases a look.

A month or two back, I shelled out US$4.99 to pick up a copy of yxplayer, a video playback utility available on the App Store. Yxplayer isn't particularly user friendly or over designed. I am also about as far away from yxplayer's core demographic as anyone can get. (More about that later.) And yet, I'm going to give it a double pair of thumbs up and recommend it to anyone who owns a video-capable camera that shoots AVI video.
I am a mom. I own an inexpensive Creative Vado unit. Right now they're selling at Amazon for about $50. We picked ours up at a Newegg sale for something like $25 shipped last year. It's a great little Flip-like video system that my 7-year-old can happily use and that works well with our living-room media Mac mini. It takes pictures (they aren't fabulously good) and shoots AVI video (ditto) and my son loves it to pieces.TUAWWatch AVI videos with yxplayer originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. Filed under: iLife
If rumors are to be believed, Apple's iLife suite will receive a major upgrade in a month's time and feature a brand new application.
Apple-centric site Mac 4 Ever claims (Google translation to English here) that the newest incarnation of the collection will be released on August 7th. Rumored features include 64-bit compatibility and a "nouvelle application (mystère !)." Also among Mac 4 Ever's list of features are improved Faces and Places in iPhoto, a totally revamped iWeb and most interestingly the absence of iDVD. Perhaps the new application will replace it, or maybe it will be a download.
Or maybe these are baseless rumors and who knows what will happen.
Last week, we noticed an "iLife '10 for Dummies" book on Amazon France, which has since been pulled. Keep an eye out for the next few weeks and we'll see what happens.

Oh, the ever-growing mountain of Twitter apps. Not since the Cola Wars has such a fierce battle for commercial dominance been waged. Today's combatant is unique in that it's a Safari 5 extension. It's young, and with a little work could be quite nice.
Ostrich is an extension for Safari 5 that monitors twitter while staying out of the way. Installation is easy. First, make sure you've got extensions enabled. From the Develop menu, select Enable Extensions. Next, open Safari's preferences, click Extensions and turn it on. Once that's done, download the extension, double-click it and give Twitter permission to connect when prompted to do so.
You'll notice that a tiny ostrich head has been added to your toolbar. As new tweets arrive, a numbered badge appears just above the poor fellow's eye. Click it to reveal the Ostrich UI. This simple drop-down displays up to 20 tweets at a time. New arrivals are tinted yellow. Across the top you see icons for your friends' stream, replies to you and your favorites.

Today, the Library of Congress has ruled in favor of both jailbreaking and unlocking phones according to an Associated Press Statement published on the New York Times. The Library of Congress statement can be found here if you'd prefer to read the original. The Washington Post has also picked up this story.
This ruling responds to an EFF petition, one opposed by Apple, that maintains the current status quo, allowing iPhone owners to continue both practices, and pushes things even further. I looked at two world conquest-style games that follow from the original Risk board game: Strategy and Conquist. Admittedly, I'm not a big Risk fan. I much prefer games that involve more building and planning and less random dice rolling. With that confession on the table, I did find that both games were well made and offered many nice features.
For US$3.99, Conquist for the iPad offers an app that, of the two, is closer to real Risk. The map is the standard Risk world (see the screen shot above) and Risk-style grace notes like those cards you collect and trade in are included in game play. Conquist provides multi-player interaction using a single interaction board, so you don't have to "pass and play" your iPad around. Filed under: iPhone
Gee whiz. It took Apple a while to respond to all the "death grip" stories, but Steve Jobs certainly got his point out in an unprecedented news conference July 16th and in a letter to customers July 2.
Now that the Bumper/Free case program is under way, delivery is said to be 3 to 5 weeks. Hey Apple, what's your hurry? Unfortunately we live in a world of instant gratification. See an app you want? Download it instantly. Want to see a video? It's a click or two away.
While most people aren't having reception problems with their iPhones, those that have been complaining will find a delay of up to 5 weeks a bit much. That will put delivery for some into September. That's a lot of dropped calls and a lot of dodgy data reception. It's about the delivery speed of those crummy TV offers from the now deceased Billy Mays.
There's no denying that Apple has done a good thing by offering cases, and using an app to register was an awfully clever idea. There may be supply problems, but my local Best Buy and AT&T stores seem to have plenty of iPhone 4 cases now.
Do you think Apple should have stepped up the pace a bit?

Steve Jobs - IPhone - Apple - AT&T - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Expenditure
Filed under: App Store
Expenditure is another great-looking app found via the excellent Well-Placed Pixels blog. It's an expense tracker -- you can add transactions into the app with just a few taps (and even attach a photo, note, or category to each debit or credit), and then browse your collected budget. Obviously, you could use it to just see how much you're spending each month, but it can also be used for things like traveling (the app will automatically calculate currencies for you) or keeping track of business expenses. It's not a super full-featured business application, but it will do the basics smoothly and beautifully.
You can find it on the App Store for US$1.99, and as an iTunes commenter points out, using it will probably save you the $2 you spend on it. There is a lite version that only allows eight transactions (enough to see the app in action, though not enough to actually put it to use), so if you're not sure about spending a couple of bucks, you can check it out that way as well. Excellent app -- the functionality is a little limited (by design -- the developers just wanted a simple expense tracker), but the great aesthetic and design elements make up for the simplicity.
