- Why Apple has a split personality when it comes to keeping iPhone owners happy
Filed under: Apple, iPhone, Apple History
After shelling out top dollar, the customers felt betrayed and angry. The shine on the company's new flagship product was tarnished. The remedy wasn't cheap... and the CEO stepped up and spoke to those irate early adopters. "We want to do the right thing for our valued customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of us," he said, responding quickly after the first complaints came in. Within a few weeks, the PR hiccup was calmed, and the new product went on to glory and success.
With an estimated 600,000 iPhones sold, the maximum exposure to the company's revenue number would have been $60 million (although not all buyers claimed or used their credit). That's not pocket change, even for Apple; however, when compared with the guesstimated 2x sales increase that the price cut triggered for the iPhone, it was a small price to pay.

I've spoken of my Trailguru love in the past. It's a simple GPS application that has, unfortunately, seemed to drop off the radar at least as far as software updates are concerned. I know its creator is still on the scene -- because I can track his bike runs on the trailguru.com website -- but the iPhone application languishes. That's a big shame, because I have friends on trailguru.com and I have localized months and months of progress there. The site isn't polished or perfect, but I really do like using it.
Today, however, I discovered something fabulous. I learned that Runmeter -- an otherwise excellent application without a cobranded website -- can export its trails to gpx files and e-mail them off. Why is that so exciting?
Well, it means that I can use the Runmeter app on my iPhone 4 -- running in the background using iOS "multitasking" -- and then later send my results up to the Trailguru site via my desktop system. I e-mail them to myself and then use the Trailguru webpage to load the gpx files.TUAWFrankenguru: Exporting Runmeter data to Trailguru originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 21:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone, App Review
Diptic, from Peak Systems, is an iPhone and iPad app that creates interesting diptych and triptych images by combining two or three of your photos into geometric arrangements. Diptic's well-designed interface (which provides nearly flawless execution of a single task), simplicity, and thoughtful balance of features make it a delightful app to use.
The workflow in Diptic isn't complex; you begin by specifying one of five different layouts for your photos. After selecting the layout, each space can either be filled with a photo from your device library, or iPhone users can use their camera to shoot new ones.
Diptic uses the same touch controls that any iOS user will be familiar with in order to transform the photos within their individual frames; you can pan around the image with one finger or zoom in and out by pinching. Tapping on a photo brings up a menu for mirroring or rotating by 90 degrees. The only small disappointment is that you can not rotate images freely; you'll need to plan on fixing issues, like a slightly tilted horizon, in another app before you start Diptic.TUAWApp review: Diptic is a delightful camera app for arranging and combining photos originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 20:00:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPhone OS - IPadПереслать - Apple: No early knowledge of iPhone 4 antenna issues
Filed under: iPhone
What a roller-coaster day! The Wall Street Journal is now quoting Apple throwing cold water directly on today's Bloomberg story. Bloomberg had reported that an Apple engineer had warned company execs about the problems with the new iPhone 4 antenna design early in the development process for the phone.
The Journal quotes an Apple spokesperson as saying:
"We challenge Bloomberg BusinessWeek to produce anything beyond rumors to back this up. It's simply not true."
The Journal also cites sources as saying there will be no recall of the iPhone 4 announced at the press event tomorrow.
It's anyone's guess as to what Apple will say tomorrow. The company may say there is a problem and continue to offer penalty-free refunds, it may give free bumpers to insulate the external antenna to customers who want them, or it may say everything is fine. We can't wait.

IPhone - Apple - Wall Street Journal - Bloomberg - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - iOS 4.0.1 update: As expected, my iPhone 4 still can't place phone calls
Filed under: iPhone
I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.0.1 and, big surprise (not), it still can't make phone calls if I'm holding the thing in my left hand using the kung fu grip of doom (i.e. the normal way I hold a phone). And, unsurprisingly, my 3GS still can make phone calls with the same grip in the same location.
I ran the Strength App, which we've discussed in previous posts about the iPhone 4 antenna issue. It is now showing a more nuanced level of how bad my home reception really is, but the bottom line remains the same. If I put on the Bumper, the thing can just barely make calls. Without, it can't.
The iPhone 4 just isn't a very good phone in low signal areas, which unfortunately is where my home seems to be. The difference is that my old phone never had a problem with those same signal conditions and my new iPhone 4 is crippled.
I know that Apple intended its update to change expectations -- fewer bars indicating less reliability -- but my expectations are that I should be able to make and receive calls in an area where I have already been doing so for the last three years, with Apple-branded equipment.TUAWiOS 4.0.1 update: As expected, my iPhone 4 still can't place phone calls originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 18:00:00 EST. The sad thing? The video might be a parody of iOS4 on the iPhone 3G, but it's definitely the truth on my end as well. Still tethered to an iPhone 3G at the moment, utilizing basic services such Maps requires a good minute of finger tapping and waiting for the OS to decide if it wants to launch the app or not.
Video creator adamburtle lamented on the same thing. He writes, "... it's not because my needs have grown. It's not because I've installed a bunch of laggy software. It's because Apple's firmware has become bloated, with respect to the processing power of the 3G iPhone."
Adam, I couldn't have said it better myself.
Of course, there's the easy answer -- upgrade to an iPhone 4. Then again, it may not be worth it. Let's see what Steve has to say on that tomorrow first. Otherwise, it might be worth just getting a cheap 3GS.

Mobile Crunch has posted a few pictures of Apple's Game Center app (still only available to developers and therefore still under NDA), and it appears that Apple is still working on the look and feel of the app. Previously, they were going with the dark blue look you can see above on the left (though I'm not convinced that wasn't just a placeholder), but the latest update has a much more colorful and textured look to it, almost like a felt game table or board game set.
I suppose it's also interesting that you actually need to sign into iTunes from the app -- I don't know if Apple would be able to simply sync everything up all the time, but I'm still entering my password in the App Store app every time I buy something new, so I suppose that would follow.
Game Center is still due out sometime this fall, and Apple is still testing and developing it behind the developer NDA wall right now.TUAWGame Center gets a new look originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 16:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

For all of his exceptional qualities, part of Woz' popularity these days lies in the fact that he is really the prototypical Apple fan -- he stands in line like everyone else, he postulates about Steve Jobs' condition, and he loves the products just as much as we do. So when even Woz admits to having reception issues with his iPhone 4, then you know it's a real problem. In an interview with a Dutch journalist, Woz says that he's been experimenting with the death grip and reception along with the rest of us. "I concluded that the effect only occurs in some places," he says, "It's like the AT&T dead zone has been extended with this new phone."
Of course, unlike most of us, Woz usually always carries a backup phone or, you know, three. And even though he's experiencing the dropouts and the issues, he's still impressed enough with the hardware that the device in general "is worth the care in holding it."
Still, Woz is the prototype for most of us Apple fans, and if even he is having the same issues that we all are, it must be time to hold a press conference. I'm sure Woz will be waiting and watching along with the rest of us tomorrow morning.

Mac fans who work with high definition camcorder clips have been aware of Elgato's Turbo.264 HD for a while -- it's a USB dongle that provides hardware acceleration for editing HD clips without converting them first. Today the company has released a software edition of the hardware device.
The Mac application, known as Turbo.264 HD SE (for Software Edition), is essentially a converter for encoding HD video for consumption on the Web or on other devices. The Software Edition uses sophisticated algorithms to convert standard and high-def files quickly, and can also work in tandem with the Elgato Turbo.264 HD hardware to boost video conversion speeds up to four times. Turbo.264 HD SE is now included with the hardware.
A free trial version of the software, which will only encode the first 3 minutes of your video, is available for download from Elgato. Elgato - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - MacintoshПереслать - Uh oh! Apple engineer reportedly warned company about iPhone antenna design
Filed under: iPhone
Apple's antenna woes continue with unabated fury today. Bloomberg news is reporting that Apple's senior antenna guru raised concerns about the antenna design planned for the iPhone, and allegedly told Steve Jobs that design could lead to dropped calls.
The engineer, says Bloomberg, is Ruben Caballero according to a source cited tin the article. It's also reported one of Apple's carrier partners also questioned the performance of the antenna design.
Apple has declined to comment on the report, and Caballero isn't responding to calls and emails. He might be busy checking those Silicon Valley help wanted posts. A quick check shows a Ruben Caballero of San Jose has several patent applications for antenna designs, including one that is a design for a "handheld electronic device with conductive bezels." Sounds familiar. The Linkedin site lists Caballero as a Senior Director, iPhone/iPod at Apple. He's been there since 2005.
It's not unusual for a design team to have differences of opinion on technical matters. I've been through a few of those meetings myself. In light of the current storm of controversy over the iPhone design, those conversations take on added importance.
You can bet Steve Jobs will be asked about all this at the news conference tomorrow at Apple headquarters.TUAWUh oh! iPhone - Steve Jobs - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Ruben CaballeroПереслать - Consumer Reports: Apple's Bumper fixes iPhone 4 antenna issue
Filed under: iPhone
Consumer Reports, the same magazine that said earlier in the week that it couldn't recommend the iPhone 4 (even though it is their top-rated phone) because of the antenna issue, is now reporting that Apple's Bumper fixes the problem.
The organization's report stated that "With the Bumper fitted, we repeated the test procedure, placing a finger on the Bumper at the point at which it covers the gap below. The result was a negligible drop in signal strength - so slight that it would not have any effect, in our judgment." Consumer Reports went on to say that duct tape would also do the trick, and that in their opinion, any fix should be done at Apple's cost and should not come out of the consumer's wallet.
While this doesn't provide an answer for other reported problems such as the "proximity sensor issue" or the "Bluetooth headset issue," it does lend some strength to speculation that Apple could announce a giveaway of Bumpers to all iPhone 4 owners at tomorrow's press conference. An offer of a free Bumper to every iPhone 4 owner would be a much less expensive solution to the antenna issue than a full-scale recall of the devices.

The iPod is elegant and small, glossy and slick. Why not cram it into a log? The huge, hollowed-out tree trunk you see at right is an iPod speaker system. Created by Austrian design studio KMKG, the piece begs for an adolescent wood joke that I'm going to resist.
When I say it is a speaker system, that's the truth. There are no electronic speakers inside. Instead, the piece is created in a way that enhances the wood's own resonance. Customers can chose their own type of wood and length of the finished piece. Note that the one above weighs 130 lbs, so choose wisely. There's no word on pricing or availability, but we assume it's one of those "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" arrangements.

Millennial Media has a new report (out this morning) that they sent along, and it's got some interesting research, based on their advertising network, about Apple and its place in the smartphone market. As you can see above, Apple's still got the majority base of OS users in the smartphone market; while we've heard that Android has pulled ahead in sales, this research shows that Apple has a clear majority in terms of actual OS usage.
Android did, however, see an increase in the number of devoted, single-platform developers. Currently, 31% of single-platform devs are working on Android (an increase of 2%) and 57% are creating apps for the iPhone. Games remain the number one app category on the network, while social networking apps are down and news and sports apps are up.
Finally, Millennial is seeing a huge spike in ad requests. Apple ad requests jumped up 36% month-over-month, and iPad ad requests alone blew up 205% month-over-month in June. Both Android and RIM saw big ad request increases as well, suggesting that more developers are learning how to successfully use ads in their apps.TUAWMillennial Media report has Apple with 56% of smartphone market, ad requests up big time originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 09:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone, App Store
Helsing's Fire is an interesting little title with a pretty original gameplay premise. The idea is that you place torches in an area full of objects and walls, and you have to target or hide certain creatures with that light. The backstory of the game is about the adventurer Van Helsing and his fight against the undead, but it's more of a strategy title; the idea is to line up the light and shadows in just the right way in order to conquer various monsters on the playing field.
While it doesn't start out very tough, more gameplay features slowly get added (eventually you have to match color attacks with certain colored monsters, and you only get a set number of attacks per stage, so you have to plan things out pretty carefully). And while the backstory is really just a frame for the gameplay, it's got a fun edge to it; it's a nice satirical spin on the old "fighting Dracula" theme, and there are a few fun celebratory fist bumps in between stages with Helsing and his assistant.
For 99 cents, Helsing's Fire offers up a good bit of original gameplay that spans 90 different levels. A survival mode and full Crystal integration add some extra fun as well, so the game is well worth the buck.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Helsing's Fire originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 08:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone, App Store
We posted about Archetype the other day -- it's an impressively solid multiplayer first-person shooter for the iPhone that brings some hardcore gameplay to Apple's touchscreen platform. And apparently there are a lot of hardcore players out there -- in just one week of release, Archetype has picked up 160,000 players. There have been over 320,000 matches played so far, with over 2 million player kills between them -- that's over 20,000 an hour. Publisher Villian says that it's obviously thrilled with the response, and that "future updates, offerings and new game features" are being worked on.
This is interesting for a few reasons: first, most iPhone offerings tend towards the casual. Little pick-up-and-play games often seem to be the norm on the iPhone, as the vast majority of developers seem to be searching for one little interesting gameplay idea and running with it. But Archetype seems to hint that if the experience is done well enough, there's definitely a large audience of "hardcore" gamers on the iPhone.
And it's worth mentioning that Archetype doesn't have a lite version and sells for $2.99. Before this game, the most high profile FPS on the store was probably Ngmoco's Eliminate, which went with a free-to-play model in the hopes of garnering a larger audience. But Archetype's success seems to show that (again, if the experience is good enough), there's room at higher price points for a solid player base. We'll have to see where Villian goes with this in the future -- we've heard from other developers that quick and free updates can really make an app grow even bigger, so if they can pull that off with Archetype, they'll really have an iOS juggernaut.TUAWArchetype nets 160,000 players in first week, promises updates and features soon originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 21:30:00 EST.
