- Wired: Steve's six sneakiest statements
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Hardware, Odds and ends, Steve Jobs, iPad
Steve Jobs' ability to enchant and persuade is often referred to as the "Reality Distortion Field." It's this power that convinces people who own 2 or 3 iPods that they need just one more.
He's also made some convincing statements that his company later contradicted in grand fashion. Last week, Brian X. Chen compiled six of the biggies at Wired's Gadget Lab (reprinted at CNN), including one of our favorites: "There are no plans to make a tablet," Jobs once told Walt Mossberg. "It turns out people want keyboards ... We look at the tablet, and we think it is going to fail."
Brian also listed Steve's insistence that Apple won't make a cell phone and that "...people don't read any more."
Of course, part of Steve's purpose here is to misdirect market watchers, customers and competitors from his company's plans. But more than that, this speaks to Apple's incredible patience.
Apple isn't usually the 1st to market. It didn't create the first digital music player. It certainly didn't create the first mobile phone and it didn't create the first tablet computer. The important thing is that Apple engineers took the time to devise the absolute best way to implement each of those devices.
If that requires a bit of reality distortion, so be it.TUAWWired: Steve's six sneakiest statements originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 10:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Steve Jobs - Apple - Walt Mossberg - IPod - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Microsoft wants to give you a MacBook Pro
Filed under: Software, Odds and ends
Q. "What's the perfect gift for a long-term commitment?" A. A MacBook Pro tinted the color of an Office for Mac icon.
Microsoft is running a pretty cool giveaway right now called Mac Office Loves You. The prize is none other than a 2.53Ghz 15" MacBook Pro with custom PMS cover and a copy of Office 2008 for Mac.
To enter you must be a registered account holder of Twitter.com. You can enter one of two ways:
- Follow @officeformac, or
- Retweet @OfficeforMac and include the hashtag #officeformac. Only one retweet will be counted per person.
What's the reason for the giveaway? Just because, apparently. "Microsoft Office for Mac loved the Mac community since way back when,'' the site states. Or perhaps they're trying to clear out all their copies of Office for Mac 2008 to make room for the new version. Either way, it's a pretty sweet giveaway. Let us know if you win!

Apple - MicrosoftOffice - Microsoft - Macintosh - Office for Mac 2008Переслать - TUAW review and giveaway -- Bookarc from Twelve South
Filed under: Accessories, Macbook Pro, MacBook, MacBook Air
It's no surprise that TUAW bloggers like the products from Twelve South. They're made only for Macs, they have excellent quality and the company always sends us items to give away to our readers. We've previously had giveaways for the BackPack, BassJump, and now we're giving away a stylish Bookarc.
The US$49.00 Bookarc takes advantage of the ability of Apple's MacBooks (Air and Pro included) to work as a desktop machine when the screen is closed and the computer is connected to an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor. You could just lay your MacBook on the desktop, but then it takes up valuable real estate. How about if you could just position your laptop vertically so it takes up a minimum amount of your desktop? That's what the BookAac is all about.
Like the other products from Twelve South, the Bookarc is attractively packaged, so it makes a wonderful gift for your favorite MacBook owner ... or yourself. After opening the box, you see the aluminum Bookarc with one silicone insert installed, and deeper inside the box are two more inserts. These inserts grip and cushion your MacBook, so you'll want to make sure you have the correct one installed. Not to worry -- they're easy to install and remove. There's not too much more to say in terms of a review, other than the Bookarc looks great and it does its job well.
If you're not familiar with how to use your MacBook with the display closed, TwelveSouth thoughtfully provides a link to an Apple Knowledge Base page that has instructions.
Now, it's time for a TUAW reader to win a Bookarc. Here are the details:
- Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
- To enter, leave a comment telling us what kind of MacBook you're going to use with the Bookarc.
- The comment must be left before Wednesday, February 24, 2010, 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time.
- You may enter only once.
- One winner will be selected in a random drawing.
- Prize: One Twelve South Bookarc desktop stand for MacBook ($49 value)
- Click Here for complete Official Rules.

MacBook - Apple - MacBook Air - United States - MacbookProПереслать - Apple posts two new iPhone ads
Filed under: iPhone, App Store
Apple has posted two new iPhone ads tonight. Both ads seem to target Joe Average and spotlight situations we find ourselves in every day.
The first, called "First Steps," targets moms and grandparents who want to show/never miss a single moment of the new tyke's life. The mom uses the iPhone 3GS to record her son's first steps, sends the video file as a MMS, and then starts a conference call with the grandparents to talk about the video. The ad ends with the mom saying "We would never have shared all that without the iPhone."
The second ad is titled "On Hold" and presents a situation we're all too familiar with. A man calls 1-800-204-7450 and is put on hold (before you try, I already called the number. A voicemail answers that says "At the tone, please record your message." I didn't leave one). The man then checks his email, pays a credit card bill, buys Monopoly from the App Store, and plays the game -- all while on hold.
As always, the apps spotlighted in the ads can be found here.TUAWApple posts two new iPhone ads originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 00:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

AppStore - iPhone - Apple - TUAW - Credit cardПереслать - Apple's 7 commandments of app sex?
Jon Atherton at Chillifresh, the app developer of Wobble, has posted what he says are Apple's new rules regarding sexual content in an iPhone app:
I have spoken with Apple, and the following are the new rules:
- No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)
- No images of men in bikinis! (I didn't ask about Ice Skating tights for men)
- No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)
- No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs
- No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex - all banned
- Nothing that can be sexually arousing!!
- No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but ...)
I've said this before, but I am glad that Apple has made these changes (pulling stupid "sexy" apps). I'm sick of seeing a "Hot Asians" app show up in every category (from Entertainment to Productivity to Utilities). The "sexy" apps were getting out of control, and they started to show up so much it was making it even harder to find good apps in the App Store.
There's a good chance that this is the reason Apple has decided to pull those apps and not, as Atherton insinuates, that Apple has imposed some sort of Sharia law on the App Store - which is pretty insulting to Islam's 1.3 billion members. The fact that Playboy is still available while thousands of junk "sexy" apps have been purged should be evidence enough that Apple is going after these cheap clutter apps and hasn't actually launched a war on sexuality.
Is Apple handling this in the best way? Perhaps not. I think Apple could create a new category of "sexy" apps that could be disabled in iTunes' preferences (or, even better, require an opt-in from users before they're visible). Apple's not the only vendor that chooses to exclude some content in its store. Best Buy, for example, doesn't allow hardcore porn to be sold in its stores. That's not censorship -- there are plenty of other places customers can go to get what they're looking for other than Best Buy.
The problem with this analogy, of course, is that for most iPhone owners, there's only one App Store, and no place else to go for adult-themed apps.TUAWApple's 7 commandments of app sex? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 21 Feb 2010 20:30:00 EST. Filed under: Macworld, Cult of Mac, Podcasting
They're the voices you hear coming out of your computer and your iPhone -- you know, the ones that tell you what's coming soon and why you might want to save up for future purchases. Yes, contrary to what you might have guessed, podcasters have faces to go with those voices; we showcased three of our favorites in our livecasting sessions from Macworld Expo, and the clips are reproduced in the second half of this post.
Our threevictimsvisitors deliver distinctive voices on Apple news and the Mac/iPhone community. First up, Shawn King of Your Mac Life, who graded the expo from his 13-year perspective as an Internet broadcaster. Second, the maven of daily Mac news (and a TUAW contributor), Ken Ray of Mac OS Ken. Last, friend to novice Macheads everywhere, Victor Cajiao of Typical Mac User. Enjoy!

Apple - iPhone - Mac OS - Macworld Conference & Expo - TUAWПереслать - Glass stair from Apple Fifth Ave spiral staircase on eBay
Filed under: Retail, Cult of Mac
So here's one for the hardcore Apple fan: you can own a supposed piece of the staircase from the Fifth Avenue Apple retail store in New York. eBay seller heylookitskibbe is auctioning the stair for a starting bid of $700 with a Buy It Now price of $2500. Though he doesn't identify himself as an Apple employee, he said he picked up the stair "before it could be thrown out over a year ago" after it had to be replaced when a customer dropped a Snapple bottle on it and cracked it.
Want it? Well, you're going to have to pick it up in Brooklyn, New York and the seller recommends you bring a car and a friend or two -- the step weighs 250 pounds (114 kg).
