- Bending the battery: Using a dock extender to flex your iPhone
Filed under: Apple
Do you use a bottom-connector battery extender? Have you been bothered by the awkward phone geometry that involves? For me, I've found it really hard to deal with the added length, especially with the (tiny!) storage compartment on the top handle of my Jeep stroller. For me, the longer phone-plus-battery length simply doesn't work, which means I can't fit the phone in.
That's awkward because I like to use TrailGuru as I walk to go pick up my youngest from school in the afternoon. After a bit of hunting, I've located a way to detach the battery from the phone to create a bending solution that does fit.
I recently picked up a Male-to-Female dock extender from DealExtreme for under four bucks (with shipping included). The cable lets me "fold" the battery into place for afternoon walks or stick it into my pocket while using the iPhone on a tether.
As far as stroller and backpack use goes, it seems to be working quite well. As for tethering, it's a fairly thick cable, and brings with it all the standard tethered irritations. Frankly, I'm not a big fan of tethered use but when you need that extra battery charge, it's a slight improvement over having the battery pack stuck directly into the bottom of the unit.
DealExtreme ships from HongKong, so it generally takes a week or so for packages to arrive. I've bought lots of things from them and they've been reliable shippers. When purchasing from Chinese suppliers, do keep in mind that the individual item fail rate is going to be higher than you might expect: not a constant issue, but something you should factor into your purchases, and something I've certainly experienced.TUAWBending the battery: Using a dock extender to flex your iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 16:00:00 EST. Filed under: Software, Internet, Internet Tools
A Mac version of Cerulean Labs' Trillian has been years in the making and as of this past Friday, the alpha build of the software is finally out in the wild for Mac users to try. A private alpha has been available since 2007.
Since I dropkicked PCs out of my household five years ago, I've switched between iChat and the wonderful Adium. Trillian has a lot to live up to when it comes to instant messaging on the Mac. Adium, to start with, is free. Trillian costs Windows users $25USD to get full access to all of its features. As stated when the original alpha was released, Trillian is rebuilding its software for OSX from the ground up.
I downloaded a copy of the alpha to try, and I am not impressed. While Cerulean Labs did warn that the alpha version of Trillian is lacking features, the entire experience was just unpleasant. No buddy icons from any of my IM accounts came over and the program looks nothing like the picture included with this article (taken from Cerulean Labs' blog announcement.) Having one-button clicks to access your different accounts is nice -- when it actually works. The most glaring of the missing features is no group chat support, which will be a turnoff for many. Other missing features include a lack of voice and video support, chat logs and more. You have to sign up for an Astra account to even start using the IM client.
When I was on Windows, the free version of Trillian was my IM client of choice. The Mac version has a lot to live up to, and maybe it could hold its own against its Windows big brother one day. But for now, I'd recommend sticking with much better, and free, alternatives such as Adium and Pidgin.

Famed OmniFocus developer The Omni Group has given a brief peak at their development roadmap. The Mac Observer reports that Omni will release OmniFocus, OmniPlan, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner and OmniGraphSketcher for the iPad.
The Omni Group is pretty excited about what all the iPad has to offer saying they feel that, like the original Macintosh, the iPad will be the computer for the rest of us. Omni has already begun porting OmniFocus and OmniGraffle for the iPad and will start working to bring their other products to iPad beginning in the next few months.
Omni is being very candid about their plans for the future of their products and it is refreshing to see a well-known software company keep their users informed. Omni admits that the iPad work will delay future release cycles for the Mac versions of their software but is confident that this is the right decision.

The folks at Mission:Repair have received iPad replacement parts from Apple. While checking them out, they noticed a slot that seems like it could accommodate an iSight. So they pulled an iSight camera from a MacBook pro and guess what happened. It fit perfectly inside the slot in the iPad's frame. In the picture at right, you see the iPad's frame (above and below) and the MacBook Pro's iSight (center).
And to add a little more fuel to the fire, some eagle-eyed event watchers claim that the iPad Jobs held on stage at last Wednesday's event actually did have what looks like a camera along the top bezel.
What does this mean? Will future iPads sport an iSight? Probably. But that doesn't explain why the 1st generation's case has the slot. It must have been pulled at the last minute for reasons of cost, function ... who knows.
If you're not going to buy one until it's got a camera, it looks like your prayers will eventually be answered.

More coverage of TUAW's inside look at developer boot camp. See below for notes & disclaimer.
It's Tuesday at Big Nerd Ranch, and we're deep into writing simple apps for our iPhones. Once Mark Fenoglio had finished teaching us some fundamentals of C and Objective-C, Joe Conway took over as instructor to lead us through actually creating iPhone apps. He'll be finishing out the course with us. Right now, we're studying CoreLocation, and creating maps on which we can find locations and add annotations. Things are starting to get interesting, and we're really starting to apply the knowledge to our own projects. The lab should be busy tonight!
In the video after the break, you'll get a chance to "meet" Joe. I think the interview captured his Daniel Tosh mannerisms and humor pretty well (see the outtakes after the outtro). You'll see Joe at least one more time before the week is over. There will be some videos posted after the course, as we're actually in the middle of nowhere and the upstream connection isn't conducive to shipping large quantities of video to YouTube. That will be changing in the future, more on that when we talk to Aaron Hillegass.
In order to give our readers the first-hand account of what it's like to experience developer boot camp, Big Nerd Ranch has permitted Brett to attend complimentary classes and has provided transportation/lodging assistance. Other than those considerations, no sponsorship or advertising relationship exists between BNR and TUAW. This series is not an endorsement of BNR's programs or teaching methodology.

Over the last week or two, my keyboard (an inexpensive Macally Apple-style unit) has been dying a slow but inevitable death. When I found myself having to hit the space key about 5 times for each successful contact, I knew it was time to start looking around for a replacement.
Of course, the most obvious replacement to buy will be the Apple wireless Bluetooth system. I've been dying to get one to play around with BTstack. That's the open source Bluetooth stack project that allows users to pair keyboards and other devices with a jailbroken iPhone.
The problems with the wireless Apple keyboard, though, are the arrow keys (very very small) and home/end/pageup/pagedown cluster (apparently non-existent). Only the full size Apple keyboard offers those features. So I'm going to turn to the TUAW Braintrust. What do you guys out in reader-land like use as your keyboards? Have they been a success or not? What keyboards can you really recommend? And what keyboards are must avoids? (My Macally? Probably the latter.) Let me know in the comments, what your suggestions are.
And, as a follow-on, what are your views on keyboard protectors? Worth the money or not? I'm living in a child-ridden dietcoke-danger environment. If I go all-out and buy Apple this go-round, should I pay the 30% premium to get a plastic shield? Help me decide with the following poll.

Filed under: Hardware, Rumors, Mac Pro
Apple's top-of-the-line Mac Pro hasn't been updated since the Quad-Core model received support for 16GB RAM in September of '09. The last major revision introduced the Nehalem Xeon 3500 Processor last March. Today, HardMac is reporting that the Core i7-980X and Core i7-970 processors could arrive this month.
HardMac notes that the chips are due to become available in March. If, they suggest, Apple still has a tight partnership with Intel, they could have exclusivity in the days or weeks before the official March release. Note that Apple was the first to use the Nehalem Xeon thanks to just such an arrangement.
Details of Intel's Core i7-980X Processor leaked in December. Code-named "Gulftown" the 32nm, six-core i7-980X will be labeled as the i7x ("Extreme Edition"), not the i9 as many expected. It will be the first dual-socket, six-core processor from Intel. With 6 cores and 12 threads, a dual-configured, i7-980X Mac Pro will sport 12 physical cores and 24 logical cores. Expect a top frequency of 3.33GHz.
In other words, don't replace your old Mac Pro just yet.

iPhone - AppStore - IpodTouch - Apple - SmartphonesПереслать - Logitech gives away free wireless mouse and keyboard (it's an app)
Filed under: iPhone, App Store, iPod touch
Peripheral manufacturer Logitech has released a free app that lets you turn your iPhone or iPod touch (or probably even your iPad, if you're Stephen Colbert) into a wireless mouse and keyboard. The free TouchMouse app [iTunes Link] is perfect for those situations where you've connected your Mac to a TV and want a way to control it from the comfy confines of your favorite couch.
There are actually two components to TouchMouse; the iPhone app and the Logitech TouchMouse Server software. The latter comes in Mac OS X and Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) versions, and must be installed on the Mac or PC in order to "host" the virtual mouse and keyboard created by TouchMouse.
The "mouse" has three buttons for your "clicking" pleasure, and uses the majority of your iPhone screen as a touchpad. With the touch of a button, you can bring up a keyboard to type on your Mac or PC.
There are other apps that can do the same thing if you're not a fan of Logitech. Air Mouse Pro [US$1.99, iTunes Link] is probably the most powerful and popular Wi-Fi mouse in the App Store, while Rowmote Pro [US$4.99, iTunes Link] has a large and vocal fan following. If you're looking for free (and who isn't?), Logitech's TouchMouse app can give you a taste of remote control at absolutely no cost.

iPhone - AppStore - Apple - IpodTouch - iTunesПереслать - Rumor: Apple developing second tablet device, made from unicorn tears
Just when you thought Apple tablet rumors were dead -- because, you know, they kind of announced one already -- another has emerged like a zombie rising from its grave to feast upon the brains of gullible fanboys. You may want to grab your salt shakers and wash its grains down with a stiff shot of whiskey for this one though. TechCrunch (a company familiar with tablet devices *wink*) is reporting that Apple may be hard at work developing a second tablet device - this one more computer than consumer device, said to be bigger and badder than its recently announced sibling. TC's MG Seigler claims to have "heard" from second-hand sources (I didn't realize Goodwill sold rumors) that iPad Maxi will feature a more robust software stack with more in common to the desktop flavor of OSX rather than iPhone OS, and powered by Intel's Atom processor.
Before the iPad was revealed last week, rumors circulated for a long time that Apple might be working on two different sizes for the screen of the device. Some had the device as small as 7″, others were saying it would go up to 10.6″. (The actual size of the iPad is 9.7″.) But the information we're hearing is that Apple is thinking much larger for another version of the product, maybe all the way up to the 15.4″ size that it currently uses for one version of the MacBook Pro.
Believe it? Neither do I. I call shenanigans.TUAWRumor: Apple developing second tablet device, made from unicorn tears originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 07:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Apple - IPhone - iPod - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Mac OS XПереслать - Skype: Dude, where's my 3G VoIP?
Filed under: iPhone, App Store, SDK
It's been nearly a week now since Apple lifted the restrictions against using VoIP over 3G to place calls on the iPhone. Within hours of the withdrawal of restrictions, iCall [iTunes Link] and fring [iTunes Link] both updated their backend to allow users to place calls over a 3G connection. In neither case was it even necessary to download an updated version of the app from the App Store; both iCall and fring basically just "flipped a switch" behind the scenes that allowed VoIP over 3G. After almost a week, neither app has been pulled from the App Store, so it seems VoIP over 3G is here to stay.
What about Skype? Skype is apparently "awaiting clarification" from Apple. They want to make sure the updated terms of the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK also apply to the 3.12 SDK before they submit an update. This caution from Skype is somewhat puzzling considering at least two other apps have been merrily humming along with VoIP over 3G enabled for almost a week without any punitive measures taken against them; fring even allows users to place VoIP calls over 3G through a Skype account. We contacted Skype three days ago to get some clarification of our own, but they haven't got back to us.
Here's the thing, Skype guys: if the state raises the speed limit on your local highway to 70 mph, changes all the signs, and stops pulling people over when they drive faster than 60, it's a pretty safe bet that you can drive 70 mph now. iMac - Apple - Firmware - Radeon - TUAWПереслать - The good and bad of iPad pricing
Filed under: Hardware, Peripherals, Bluetooth
I think all of us were surprised at the entry level cost of the new iPad at just US$499.00. In a recent article at ars technica it's stated that the pricing "confirms what a major shift in strategy the iPad is for Apple's business." My colleague Sang Tang also says the evidence is persuasive that the price of the iPad makes it disruptive for competitors.
Could be. I've talked to more than a few people who weren't considering the iPad until they heard that relatively low price point. Of course Apple has stripped the iPad pretty bare: there's no USB, no camera, no SD card, and so on. Certainly some of the Windows 7-based tablet computers will cost more, and they will have more features, but it's still rare that Apple finds itself in a position like this to compete on price.
There's one place where I think Apple has slipped up, and that is the premium charge for 3G access. They're charging 130 bucks for what can't be more than a 20 dollar chip, and from a tactics perspective, I think that's a major mistake. I might be drawn to the cheapest iPad, but if I am traveling for one week and want 3G access, my iPad is just a paperweight. I think it would have been better to have just three different iPad models, starting at $499 and ending at $699.
At that price, people might opt in and out of 3G service, especially since AT&T has allowed you to buy in one month no contract increments. Without the chip built in, people don't have the easy choice.
It appears that the 3G iPad also gives you GPS, but that's hardly an expensive option -- one firm is offering to add GPS to a Bluetooth chip for less than a dollar. Recently it was estimated that the 3G, power management, and GPS chips cost about $16.00 for the iPhone 3GS, so the cost can't be that much more significant for Apple. And of course, iPad owners who have built-in 3G capability would be tempted more than once to get 3G service. I know I would be.
But even with 3G, the iPad is a bargain, at least compared to what it could have cost. It has shaken up the consumer electronics industry, and I'm sure more than one company is looking at price adjustments. We're looking at you, Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
$130 for 3G is a lot to ask, and it would have been nice for Jobs to aim for consolidating a product line, rather than introducing it with six separate models at once. But even with those extra charges, it certainly seems like the iPad's price will definitely shake up the tablet market, and the eReader industry may not be far behind.TUAWThe good and bad of iPad pricing originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 20:00:00 EST. Filed under: Software, Hacks, Odds and ends, Apple, Security
And now we're at the point in the iPad cycle where there's just enough information out there about it that people are interested, but not enough that they can discern credible information from scammers. That's the report of the BBC, which says that "hi-tech" scammers are using iPad-based searches to prey on users and install various types of "rogue security software." The news here isn't necessarily that scammers are out there scamming people (that happens all of the time), but it's that scammers are cashing in on the iPad frenzy to do so. Then again, that's probably not a huge surprise, either: they probably always latch onto whatever the hottest search topics are, and this past week, of course, it was the iPad.
In my own personal opinion, these fearmongering reports are the biggest scam of all. Even the BBC is only reporting this based on information from Symantec, and that's S.O.P. for the antivirus company: a) release a report that claims everyone is in danger and that viruses are everywhere, b) get some less-than-tech savvy journalist to believe it, and c) sell copies of your antivirus software and profit. In reality, if you click links only on trusted sites and keep an eye on everything coming in to your Mac, you don't need Symantec to tell you how to be safe. If you install "security software" that you happened to pick up while searching for iPad news, of all things, then you can't be surprised when your system gets compromised.TUAWScammers exploit Apple iPad fever originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 19:30:00 EST. The geek clothiers at SCOTTEVEST keep coming up with great ways to stay in the news, and their latest tip is, not surprisingly, iPad-related.
One of the first products from the company was the Travel Vest for Men (US$100), which has been a popular way to hide every piece of tech gear you own in plain sight since it first appeared in 2000. What's great about the Travel Vest, as well as most of the rest of the SCOTTEVEST line, is that they're perfect for traveling with a lot of tech toys. You simply load up all of the 22 pockets with equipment, spare batteries, cables, or SDHC chips, walk up to security, put the entire vest into the bin for x-raying, and you're ready to go.
Well, someone at the company was thinking, and as soon as the dimensions of the iPad were verified as being about the size of a Kindle (something else you could stash in one of the bigger pockets), SCOTTEVEST proudly announced that they're the first clothing line with a pocket for the iPad.
This attempt at free PR definitely worked for SCOTTEVEST, as a lot of the Apple media has been picking up on this story. We're all just thankful that it's not another series of bad movies with Woz.
