  • CLEAR offers 4G iSpot mobile broadband to iDevice owners
Since the promise of unlimited 3G internet access via AT&T on the iPad has evaporated into the mist, the makers of various mobile WiFi hotspots have been nosing around the iStuff market with solutions aimed at iPad, iPod touch and iPhone users who don't want to pay full freight to AT&T.

Up until now, the products or concepts we've seen have all been capable of supporting any WiFi-enabled device that you might want to use with them, but here's a new wrinkle: CLEAR has launched the iSpot, a version of the company's WiMAX Spot mobile connectivity device that is designed to work only with the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

Yep, that's right -- you can't use your Mac or PC laptop with this lovely white broadband widget, just your iOS gear. Engadget reports that the iSpot is doing MAC filtering (that's Media Access Control, not Macintosh) to identify the legit devices.

It may seem like a fairly onerous restriction (and one that could be worked around relatively easily by a savvy user), but it comes with a hefty benefit. The iSpot normally sells for $99, but it's on sale today for $29; monthly service for the device is $25 for unlimited data. That compares very favorably to CLEAR's monthly charge of $40 for unlimited access on its similar Spot device, which supports all sorts of WiFi clients.

Of course, since the iSpot is a 4G-only device, it does you no good whatsoever if you're not covered by CLEAR. The company's footprint is growing, but it's far from ubiquitous; the iSpot is probably best for someone who's not planning to travel much with it.

  • App Star winners announced

The App Star awards are hosted by Appsfire, highlighting up-and-coming apps deserving of more attention. In the second round of awards the winners are: IsoCards, Mixr and LiveRider. We'll have more on these apps in the coming weeks, but here's a rundown:

IsoCards: $1.99 for iPad and iPhone. One of my first iPad downloads, IsoCards added the ability to hold your cards in your iPhone (or iPod touch) and throw them onto the table on the iPad. This is just a simple table and cards, but perhaps one of the best implementations of real-world game pieces on the iPad out there. If you want to play cards but are missing a deck, check out IsoCards.

Mixr: a DJ app for iPad, it isn't yet available.

LiveRider: a free app designed to work with the LiveRider hardware. LiveRider attaches to a bicycle and allows you to record your cadence, speed and session time. It will play music in the background, chart progress and more.

  • iLounge leaks details on next-gen iPods, iPhone, iPad
Earlier today, iLounge reported on a few tidbits of leaked info regarding the next batch of iPods (due in September), as well as details on a possible "iPad mini" and iPhone 5. iLounge has given out very accurate information in the past, so it's likely that at least some of their info is spot-on. Here's their leaked info, presented roughly in order of how likely it is to be true:

    1. A new iPod nano and iPod touch will debut within the next couple of months. This one is a no-brainer; Apple's been holding annual September refreshes of its iPod line as far back as I can remember. The iPod shuffle is also due for an update, with iLounge claiming the device will come with a 1.7" touchscreen display. The current shuffle has no controls on its body at all, with all input coming from its included headphones' buttons, so even a touchscreen barely bigger than a postage stamp would be a welcome improvement. Notably, there's no info offered on the iPod classic -- many people believe the iPod classic will be retired this year.

    2. Apple will redesign its bumper cases to an all-silicon design to reduce the cost of its free bumpers for iPhone 4 program. This is probably the impetus behind Apple's insistence that current iPhone 4 owners must apply for a free case before September 30.

  • Report: iPhone 4 owners report fewer dropped calls than iPhone 3GS
With all of the Antennagate hoopla since the release of the iPhone 4, you'd think that owners of the new phone are never able to complete a call normally. According to a recently published survey from ChangeWave Research, iPhone 4 owners are reporting fewer dropped calls than iPhone 3GS owners.

5.2% of iPhone 4 owners reported dropped calls during the month of July, while 6.3% of owners of the iPhone 3GS said they had experienced dropped calls in a June survey. The survey also noted that one in five iPhone 4 owners said that the antenna issue had caused them problems, but respondents also overwhelmingly felt that Apple's solution (the free case / bumper giveaway) was acceptable.

The survey contained more fascinating information about the iPhone 4. While 72% of iPhone 4 owners are Very Satisfied with their phones and another 21% weigh in at Somewhat Satisfied, those numbers are lower than what ChangeWave saw for the iPhone 3GS in August of 2009. At that time, 82% of iPhone 3GS owners were Very Satisfied, and 17% were Somewhat Satisfied. ChangeWave believes the tidal wave of negative publicity around the release of the iPhone 4 may be the cause of the lower numbers for the new phone.

Even more fascinating were the results of a survey question asking "What do you dislike the most about your iPhone 4?" While the same question about the iPhone 3GS last year found 41% of respondents griping about the short battery life, a huge number of iPhone 4 owners find AT&T to be the worst thing about the phone. 27% found the requirement to use AT&T's network to be their top complaint, while 24% found the coverage, speed, and quality of the AT&T network to be their top beef.

ChangeWave thinks that now that the wave of negative publicity about the iPhone 4 has passed, the phone may eventually surpass the customer satisfaction figures of the iPhone 3GS.

  • iPhone 4 camera won't open? Try these steps

There are numerous reports of the camera in iOS 4 failing to open. I've seen it quite a bit on my iPhone 4, but it comes and goes. While some folks are swapping out hardware, I'm not so sure this is a hardware issue. I still advise you to call Apple or visit a Genius Bar, but this appears to be a memory issue more than anything. I'm hoping iOS 4.1 will fix the problem.

What happens is that you go to use the camera on your phone, and the shutter won't open. You may see this in the Camera app, or in other apps like Facebook or Ya Gotta See This! which use the iPhone's camera. In other apps it may simply be that you can't click the button to take a pic, or the image of what you'd see never appears. Either way, something is gumming up the works. Here are a few possible fixes:

    1. If you're multitasking and you have a bunch of apps that use a lot of memory (games, usually) open when you double-click the home button, you may want to force some of those to close. Just hold down an icon for a couple of seconds as those you were going to move icons around, and you'll see a red circle with a white minus sign. Tap as many apps as you can live without for the moment, close out the shelf, and go back to the camera. If memory has cleared up, you may get a picture.

    2. One way to clear the memory is to reboot the iPhone. Just hold down the power button until the red slider appears to power down the device. Turn it back on and see if you can take a picture.

    More on the next page.

    [Hat tip to Brandon Martinez]

  • iPad moves closer to sale in China
On Monday, the iPad moved one small step closer to the Chinese market when it received the China Compulsory Certification from the China Quality Certification Center. Other certifications will be necessary, but this important first step has been taken.

The Chinese government will ultimately determine if and when the device is sold. Before that happens, it will be subject to other regulating bodies like China's Telecommunications Equipment and Certification Center.

Liu Liang with the consulting group iResearch suggests that the iPad would sell well in China, despite competition from other devices. "The iPad is a top tier device," he said, "and the Apple brand has a great deal of influence among consumers."

You'll remember the trouble Apple had before bringing the iPhone to the Chinese market. Initially, wireless devices were required to use China's own WAPI standard, a measure that was relaxed earlier this year, when devices were allowed to have both WAPI and Wi-Fi. Since then, the iPhone has gone on to sell very well.

Apple has not announced formal plans to sell the iPad in China, but (slow) progress is being made. Here's hoping our friends in China can get their hands on iPads soon.

  • Safari Extension highlight: A Cleaner YouTube

    With the addition of the
Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website over the last few days, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

Here's a nice extension for those who visit YouTube but dislike its visual clutter. A Cleaner YouTube by 200ok Web Consulting removes all of the ads, sidebar items, comments and pretty much everything else that isn't the video you're watching. Once installed, youtube.com simply shows a search field. Enter your criteria and hit return to review the neatly-presented results.

Select a video to watch and it appears centered in a field of white all by its lonesome. Nice, eh?You'll notice that some features are missing, like comments and the embed link, but who needs those, right? The developer says that comments at least are in the works.

If you like things to be nice and tidy, check out A Cleaner YouTube.

  • Flickr find: Creative Griffin case mod nets owner a family of cases
If there's anything we love to hear about here at TUAW, it's great customer service. Reader Cristina made our morning with a story of how the team at Griffin Technology went out of their way to turn a bad situation into a happy one for everybody involved.

Cristina had purchased a standard Griffin Reveal case with white sides to protect her iPhone 4. After a few weeks, she noticed that the "sides got really nasty," so she decided to bring it up to Griffin. She contacted customer service at the company through their website, talking to a customer service agent named Curt.

The two talked for a bit about the issue. Curt wanted to see the case to view the damage and also asked why Cristina couldn't just return the Reveal to Best Buy. Well, a quick glance at the case shown that she had modified the case into "Lester," who you can see at right. Yes, a pair of stick-on googly eyes and a red smear of paint had given the plain case a personality and a name.

Curt was in awe of the case mod, and mentioned that it would look good on his desk. Curt offered to send Cristina two new Reveals (one black, one white) if she'd send Lester back to the company. Cristina agreed, but only with the guarantee that Curt would take good care of Lester.

A few days later, Cristina received the black Reveal case. Yesterday, she received a much larger box containing what she thought would be the white case. Much to her surprise, inside were six Griffin Reveal cases, all with names and faces except for one labeled "Design your own."

You can view Cristina's new family of cases in her Flickr gallery.

  • Capo 2 detects chords and tabs in your favorite songs
We reported on the original version of Capo a while back, and now the folks at SuperMegaUltraGroovy have released version 2 over on their website. The biggest feature in the new release is "a highly detailed spectrogram visualization," which basically means that they've implemented what the first app couldn't do; there's actual chord detection in the software. As you play the song, you can see visualizations of where the notes fall on the scale, and you can lay down chord markers that will automatically mark out your chords. Basically, you can reverse engineer the song.

It's pretty wild. You'll still need some musical insight since the app doesn't always get it perfectly right, and you'll need to know where the chord changes are in order to mark them out. It's impressive, though. I was able to get a basic chord structure out of the first verse of the Decemberists song above, and if I played around with it some more, I bet that I could reproduce the song on the guitar.

You can also have it write out tabs for you, and all of the features of the first version are back; you can mark out choruses and verses on all of your songs, correct pitch and speed, and set up loops to play along with. If you do any amount of playing around with your favorite songs, it's a fun tool to have. Capo 2 is US $49 as a new purchase or US $19 as an upgrade from the first version. It's also available as a free five minute trial download from the site.

  • Installing iMovie HD 6 without iLife '08

When iLife '08 and '09 came out, I was pretty happy about all of the new bells and whistles -- except for iMovie, that is. As much as I wanted to like the completely revamped iMovie, to me it was as tasty as "New Coke" when compared to Coca-Cola Classic.

When Apple released iLife '08, it provided a free download (which is no longer available, so I hope that you saved it) of iMovie HD 6, and it could live alongside of iMovie '08 harmoniously.

However, let's say that you've just completed a fresh install of Mac OS X, and you want to install both iMovie HD 6 and the latest version of iLife, iLife '09. That's not the most straightforward of tasks. First, you'll have to install iLife '08, because the Apple-provided, free download of iMovie HD 6 does a check to see if you have iLife '08 installed; if you don't have it, you can't proceed. Your next step is to install iMovie HD 6 and then install iLife '09.

With this little tip, you can save 10 minutes of your life and install iMovie HD 6 without iLife '08.

    • First, mount the .dmg file of the iMovie HD 6 download that Apple provided (I hope you kept it).
    • After it's mounted, right-click on the installation package and select "show package contents."
    • In the "Contents" folder, double-click on this file: "Archive.pax.gz." This archive will extract its contents to a folder named "Archive," which you'll need to locate.
    • Inside the Archive folder, you'll find a folder named "Applications," and living in this Applications folder, you'll find the "iMovie HD" app. Just drag it over to your Applications folder, and you're all set.

Readers, tell us what you think. Did it take you a while to fully embrace the '08 and '09 versions of iMovie, or do you still wholeheartedly prefer iMovie HD 6?

  • TUAW's Daily App: Star Dunk
Star Dunk is a strange little mix of online basketball (you can see the basic idea here) and an interesting cosmic aesthetic. To shoot the basketball, you just touch the screen and drag until your guideline is lined up, and then you fire away and try to drop in as many shots as possible. You get bonus points for extra nice shots, and if you hit all four targets on the "backboard," you can grab power-ups as well. High scores earn you Plus+ achievements and in-game rewards, like different balls (with various useful attributes) to use.

The game is a ton of fun! It's got that perfect "just one more try" feeling to it that keeps you going back for another round. And the graphics are terrific for the game's simplicity; there are lots of sparkles, and even some fun zoom angles, interspersed with ambient background music and glossy sound effects. Star Dunk is a great little title, and it's only 99 cents. So, if that online basketball gameplay appeals to you, it's a no brainer.

  • Pulse News Reader for iPad update makes you a news editor
A new update to Pulse News Reader for iPad now lets you mash up your own mix of news for others to subscribe to. The update to version 1.1.4, which went live last evening, provides each user with their own "pulse" if they so desire.

What's a pulse? It's actually a Posterous blog (with a pulsememe.com domain name). If you're looking through some of your feeds in Pulse News Reader and see a post that you'd like your friends or followers to read, just tap on the "heart" icon and the post is added to your pulse. Followers can subscribe to your pulse in Pulse News Reader for iPad by searching for your name or handle in the app, then searching under Pulse Users. For example, if anyone wants to see what news I'm excited about, they can subscribe to Steve Sande. Whether it's a news item I've added from another site or something that I've written and posted to my Pulsememe blog, it gets published and the world gets to read it. If friends or followers aren't Pulse users, they can still follow what I'm interested in by going to the blog that's created at stevesande.pulsememe.com.

Now here's the cool thing. If a lot of people are tapping the heart icon for a specific post, it ends up on the top stories page at Pulsememe.com. People who add a lot of posts are considered top editors and are listed on the Pulsememe page. In other words, this becomes a way for hot news items on the blogs you follow to rise to the top of the Internet heap, at least for a while. If there's anything I'm not happy about, it's that I can't connect this to my existing Posterous blog -- it ends up going into the special Pulsememe blog instead.

The update is free to current users of Pulse News Reader for iPad, and the My Pulse feature should be making it to the iPhone version soon. Take a look at the gallery below for a few screenshots.

  • The Wedgepad bean bag stand for the iPad
The Wedgepad ($27 shipping only to the US), taking a cue from Veronica Belmont's Cat stand, is a comfortable iPad stand comprised of a wedged bean bag and four white elastic straps. It's very light, weighing in at only five ounces. The straps hold your iPad securely and its pliability and microsuede bag make it feel quite nice on your lap, where it's meant to be used. When attached, it seems to become part of the iPad. I've been playing around with one for a few days and haven't taken it off my iPad yet.

It only works in landscape mode and can be used in a 30 degree mode which stands the iPad nearly vertically. That's not a great angle for your lap but it's okay for viewing on a table, especially if you are watching a movie and don't need to tap any buttons. I've used it mainly in the 45 degree mode, which is a perfect viewing angle when on your lap. My only complaint is that the white straps make it look a bit cheap, and it appears that it's holding your iPad hostage, but that's nothing that a black Magic Marker can't fix.

You may remember it being announced in May and then tumbling into obscurity. There were production problems, and a small number got shipped, but now there is adequate stock. Pick one up now and you'll get free shipping, too, at least until the end of August.

  • hacksugar: Move past FieldTest with Signal

Missing FieldTest? It was a "secret" iPhone application that used to report all kinds of basic signal and connectivity details for your phone. You could access it by typing a special sequence (*3001#12345#*) into the Phone app. Field Test would list your local cell towers, their ids, relative strengths, and so forth.

Apple ditched Field Test in iOS 4, which made a lot of people sad. Having that information in-hand can really help with certain diagnostic uses of the phone, not to mention assist with home brew location calls. (Core Location has not been available from the command line, making home brew workarounds a handy asset.)

  • Forrester Research says iPhone and iPad 'secure enough' for most businesses
That's a change from 2007 when the iPhone was not a recommendation from most of the IT firms, and many large companies posted a 'keep out' sign for the iPhone. Now Forrester Research in a new report says that the iPhone running iOS 4 and the iPad are 'secure enough' if companies implement the correct security policies and controls.

In the report, Forrester consultant Andrew Jaquith says the iPhone (and iPad) gives enterprises enough security options to enable them to say "yes" instead of "no."

Forrester still says the RIM BlackBerry still rules the roost as far as security goes, because it can be customized and security settings are more fine grained, but the firm add that the iPhones and iPad can be made very secure in an enterprise environment.

That's good news for Apple, and for companies who are seeing increasing pressure to integrate Apple products into their suite of tools. The full report is available to Forrester customers.
