  • Steve's D8 interview now available on iTunes

    steve jobs d8

As you know, a few weeks ago Steve Jobs took the stage at the eighth annual D: All Things Digital (i.e., D8) conference, where he was interviewed by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher on the recent goings on at Apple HQ. Unfortunately, most of us couldn't be there and had to sit back and read the tweets and blog postings from the lucky ones at D8, to get a good sense of what was going on. Blog postings! The horror!

Fortunately, Apple has provided full video and audio downloads of Steve's D8 interview on iTunes, both free and clocking in at just over an hour-and-a-half long.

Maybe someone can answer this for me: why is it that many of these conferences aren't simply streamed for the general public, as they happen? Is it because they want to give those in the audience more reason to be there, rather than watching from home, or are servers really incapable of handling the onslaught of traffic?

  • App demo: Round the Clock

Over the next week I'll share the 30+ app demos we caught on tape at WWDC 2010. To kick things off, here's Round the Clock, a productivity app from Masters of the Minute. Round the Clock takes your calendar and presents it as a pie chart for the day or week. If you love pizza, Pac Man and pie charts, you'll love Round the Clock instantly. If you love MobileMe sync on your calendars, you may not (keeping in mind that an advertised feature of iOS 4 is the ability for developers to finally access your calendar data). Google calendar sync does work, however, which is quite nice. At US$9.99, however, you may want to determine if the bells and whistles are worth the cost.

While Round the Clock seems a bit gimmicky, there are a few nice things besides the presentation of data here. First, there are extra edges to pie wedges to indicate travel times so your schedule can accommodate those. Next, there's a simple swipe movement to change days or weeks or even months on the calendar. Why Apple's Calendar app doesn't do this I'll never know. You can also shake at any time to return to the "Today" view -- although in real life I've found shaking an app can lead to unintended consequences (sliding down a bench can indicate a "shake" to the iPhone's peabrain).

Adding data in the app is actually one of the coolest features as the UI has you using sliders and nice, big buttons to enter your info. If you've ever cursed at Apple Calendar app and the crummy way data entry is handled (how many times do I have to forget to save something?), know that Round the Clock does it better. Plus, the way it handles things that happen with regularity is excellent. I guess in Cupertino nothing ever happens on "the last Thursday of every month" but in my world it happens a lot. Round the Clock is the best I've seen at tackling that specific issue.

  • Poll: Did you pre-order an iPhone 4?

    Filed under:

Now that iPhone pre-orders have concluded, many people have been left frustrated by the technical issues that both Apple and AT&T experienced on the 15th. Authorized retailers like Best Buy and Radio Shack also sold their stock within a day or so.

With technical difficulties that hindered many would-be customers, we're curious to see who was successful and through which provider. If you did pre-order an iPhone 4, take our informal poll to let us know who it was with.

In addition, please tell us how long the process took. Ten minutes? Two hours? We'll post the results tomorrow.

  • WWDC 2010: Server Admin Remote and Workgroup Manager Remote for iPad

    Filed under:

One of the most technical, and yet powerful, apps I saw at WWDC last week was Server Admin Remote, an iPhone and iPad app designed by three guys in Germany calling themselves Harlekins. The app is modeled after Apple's own Server Admin tool for Mac OS X server, and basically allows for complete server administration right on the iPad or iPhone. All three developers from Harlekins are IT guys on their own, so they say that they've designed "a tool for IT staff, by IT staff."

I don't have a lot of experience in server administration, but Server Admin Remote seems like a powerful tool. While most of the app is modeled after Apple's own tool (with Apple's blessing -- they've spoken with Apple's OS X server engineers, who told the guys that they were extremely impressed with the app), there are some parts of the program that are actually unique to the mobile version. You can not only browse various servers around the world, but you can view data for each server, check the logfiles remotely, and even do things like see the process lists or actually restart the server directly from the iPad app.

  • iSkin announces An iPad case for the germ-phobic

    Filed under:

Are you a little OCD when it comes to germs? Do you feel like you need to wash your hands after you use your iPad? Did that report about the iPad screens in Apple Stores being hotbeds for assorted fungi and bacteria make you want to take a long, hot shower?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then iSkin has a new iPad case just for you. The only iPad case made with built-in Microban, the iSkin Duo (US$49.99) is a dockable case made from a hypoallergenic silicone that is given a finish to resist the tendency for cases of this type to collect dust and dirt particles.

The Duo has a colorful back with an embossed pattern and special side grips that make for sure handling of your iPad. There are a rainbow of colors to choose from: yellow, purple, brown, blue, pink, red, and clear.

To make sure that your fear of germs is negated, Microban is embedded into the silicone. This antimicrobial agent works constantly to kill fungi and bacteria that can cause staining and odors. Need to sterilize the case? You can wash it in hot water without distorting the shape and fit of the Duo.

iSkin also announced the new iSkin Vu line of cases, and both it and the Duo will be available within a few weeks at retail outlets and online.

  • iPhone 4 lineup starts in Texas

    Filed under:

Don't mess with Texas. Especially Dallas resident Justin Wagoner. He's the first in line for an iPhone 4 at Apple Store Knox Street. For those of you who just glanced at your calendar, you're right. He's a week early.

Calling himself "...a very determined fan," Justin has been posting about his residency on Knox Street on the Macrumors Forums. Inside his tent he's got sleeping gear, a chair, food and drinks and power for his devices. He says that the Apple Store staff have been treating him "like a king." I'm not surprised. When I was in line for an iPad in Boston (only a few hours for me), the staff at the Boylston Street Store were cheering for Miles, our line's leader.

Before you call Justin crazy, remember that a few New Yorkers lined up for the 3G iPhone and the original iPhone a week ahead of time. Here's hoping Justin enjoys his week's "vacation" and, more importantly, his new iPhone 4.

  • Apple updates MobileMe

    Filed under:

MobileMe emerged from its downtime this morning with a new app, improved navigation and significant changes to Mail. The app is MobileMe for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Now customers can locate, lock or even wipe their lost device from another iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Of course, that means you'll need access to two devices, but that's a minor technicality, right?

The new version of Mail is out of beta and available to everyone. There are a lot of changes here, including some that have been added since the beta program started. New widescreen and compact views allow for more of your messages to be seen without scrolling. The older classic view is still available, but seems cluttered when compared to the other two. I'm using the compact view, which displays messages like the iPad does in landscape orientation.

Rules are now in place for everyone (they need a few minutes to get working), and apply to messages received on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad as well.

One-click archiving will send your messages to the archive folder for future reference. It is possible to select multiple messages at once, making archiving easier. Also new is faster performance (there's no need to click and load every message), SSL security and a formatting toolbar. You can even reformat long URLs into something more manageable.

Changes that are new since the beta release include support for external addresses. Now you can read all of your mail in one place. Plus, if you reply to a message received from an external address, you can send it from that message, not your MobileMe account.

Junk mail filtering has also been improved since the beta. Now, flagged messages go directly to the junk mail folder. You can always go in and rescue false positives, however.

Aside from Mail and the new Find My iPhone app, MobileMe navigation has been changed. All of the services now feature a unified toolbar. The cloud icon remains constant, and clicking on it brings up an app switcher for moving between services.

Have fun exploring the new MobileMe. Congratulations to Apple and the MobileMe team on a solid update.

  • Apple releases Find my iPhone app

    Filed under:

Apple has released a Find my iPhone app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch today, bringing the MobileMe service to the three devices (it only tracks the iPhone and iPad, of course).

If your iPhone or iPad goes missing, you can install the app on any other iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and log in with your MobileMe credentials (a MobileMe account is required) to find it. Once located, the app places its location on a map. From there you can display a message on the iPhone or iPad's screen, have it play a sound (even if silenced), remote lock it or even wipe it clean.

Of course, the whole thing hinges on your having a 2nd device to find the first one. Find my iPhone is free and universal and available now.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Super QuickHook

    Filed under:

Hook Champ is a popular title on the iPhone, a game in which you use a little hook to drive a little guy through a series of haunted ruin stages. Super QuickHook is basically a sequel to the first game -- it's done by the same developers, but the gameplay has been tweaked a little bit to offer up a different kind of challenge. While Hook Champ is a little more like a platformer, with designed levels, Super QuickHook has your hero swinging through randomly generated levels, in a Canabalt-style setup mixed with the hook-swinging gameplay.

As you can probably imagine, it's great fun. The app is on sale right now for an intro price of $1.99, though the normal price is $2.99, still a quality deal for a very nice app. And updates are coming soon, with new levels, new items, and new achievements. Even if you missed grappling through Hook Champ, be sure to give this one a look.

  • Rumor: Apple considering HD radio in future devices

    Filed under:

hd radioWay back two or three years ago, we first heard about some HD radios coming out that would allow for iTunes tagging of songs for later purchase. I guess Apple thought that was a mighty nifty idea, as they later gave similar capability to the latest iPod nano, and the company has recently filed for a patent that integrates HD radio right into future iPhones and iPods.

Unlike with traditional FM radio, HD radio transmits with it information on the song, artist and album you're listening to. The most recent iPod nano has a song tagging feature for its built-in, traditional FM receiver, though it relies on later syncing the device with iTunes to make sense of what song you tagged.

With HD radio capabilities built into an iPhone or iPod, theoretically you could set your device to search for a particular song title via HD radio information. You'd also be able to quickly tag the song for purchase and be brought immediately to the iTunes app.

With iOS 4's multi-tasking capabilities, most likely one would be able to listen to HD radio stations while performing other tasks, much like you can do now while listening to iTunes. While streaming apps like Pandora are popular and will have backgrounding capability, HD radio does one thing Pandora doesn't: it won't use up your data plan.

Of course, as with any number of the slew of patents Apple files for, there's no telling whether we'll actually see HD radio built into future devices.

  • Who wants an iPad? Almost everyone!

    Filed under:

My wife and I are currently cruising the Baltic aboard the Disney Magic. Of course, two things we couldn't leave at home were our iPhones and iPads. One thing we found immediately was that many of the crew members and passengers on the Magic had never seen an iPad, and they were fascinated with the device.

As an example, Burak, the manager of one of the three restaurants on the ship, had me demo the iPad to his wife. She is on the ship for a few weeks as a guest of the cruise line, and he needed her to "approve" his planned purchase of an iPad. After a short demo of Photos, a few games, and iWork, Burak's wife gave his purchase the thumbs-up. I can now count the restaurant manager as a good friend.

  • iPad hacked with Verizon MiFi innards

    Filed under:

Here's a mod for everyone crying into their Rice Krispies because the iPad isn't on Verizon. Someone at the Dish Network Store has taken apart a Verizon MiFi and crammed its brain into a 3G iPad (after removing the AT&T parts, of course). The result is a Verizon-powered iPad that's also a mobile hotspot called the "iPiFi."

The MiFi's innards are narrower than the iPad's AT&T parts, but also taller. Getting it in place meant removing a portion of the iPad's speaker assembly. The modder claims that the effect on sound quality was minimal, and we can only take his word on it.

Those of you with a MiFi know that it shuts itself off after 30 minutes of inactivity. How would or soldering superhero deal with that? Why, install a simple switch from Radio Shack and poke it through the slot meant for a SIM card, of course. Now the iPiFi's connectivity can be restarted with the flick of a fingernail.

Still, two problems remained. One was the MiFi's blinding green power indicator light, which was visible through the display. That was easily removed with needlenose pliers. Finally, the MiFi was connected to the iPad's internal antenna which provides plenty of reach.

That's all cool, but what has he lost? His warranties, for one. GPS is also out the window. But those are small prices to pay for such a cool mod. An iPad that provides Wi-Fi connectivity for itself and four other devices? Yes, please.

  • First Look: Life, a web browser optimized for the iPad

    Filed under:

Developer Saied Ghaffari's company, It's About Time, should be well known to TUAW readers. We highlighted the widget iPad app the company created, which regretfully never made it to the App Store. Apple essentially banned all widget apps, so Saied and company decided to try something different: creating a web browser optimized for touch navigation on the iPad.

The result is the Life Web Browser. Ghaffari's team looked at the shortcomings of Safari and alternatives such as Perfect Browser before beginning design. Safari doesn't provide tabbed browsing, and tapping any link opens a new window that must be loaded prior to viewing. Perfect Browser adds tabs, but Ghaffari's team found that tabs weren't exactly the best interface for navigating an iPad browser. In addition, tapping a link opens a new tab and the user must wait for that tabbed window to load.

Life is built upon WebKit, the heart of Safari, so any features that are added to future versions of Safari should make it into Life. But that is where the resemblance ends.

  • Ten tiny and amazing Mac apps you've never heard of

    Filed under:

The following is a guest post from Tod Maffin, one of Canada's most influential web and technology commentators. Thanks, Tod! -Ed.

Air Video Server (Mac app is free, iPhone/iPad app is $2.99 or free Lite version) This is a great little app that for people who have lots of videos on their computer, but want to watch them on your iPhone, iPod Touch, and an iPad. Previously what I had to do was to convert the videos to MP4 (often a very slow process), import them into iTunes, and tweak the metadata. Only then could I watch the movies I have on my iDevices. That still wasn't a great solution, since those videos then took up space on those devices.

This app is really a tiny file server that runs on the same computer on which your videos are stored. You can point it to any number of directories containing your videos, including attached servers, and it'll stream them live to any of your iDevices. The other great bonus is it'll convert from basically any video format -- on the fly. Brilliant.

[You might have heard of this one -- we covered it on TUAW back in April, along with workalike competitor StreamToMe. -Ed.]

Appfresh (Free) I've always been an early adopter and, probably to my detriment, I always want to try the latest versions of programs. Appfresh will scan your Applications folder and compare your versions with the latest versions. Within a minute, it'll have a list of programs that need updating. You can always pick and choose which to update - it suggests beta versions, so if you're not up to a pre-release version, you can opt to not update that app.

Keep vigilant, though, for big upgrades to paid programs (i.e., from 3.1 to 4.0) -- they may drop a new version that wants you to pay for an upgrade, leaving you to manually find and re-install the old version (if it's still available on the developer's site!). [TUAW post from back in ought-seven.]

Click the link below for the rest of the list.
