- Apple releases Airport Extreme Update 2007-002
Filed under: Airport, Software Update
Apple has just released a new security update for Airport Extreme. This update addresses the security concerns regarding system crashes caused by "attackers on the wirless network" (You can read more about the security issues here). The update also improves MacBook and MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo compatibility for use with some WEP Open System third-party access points.
Thanks everyone who sent this in.

I recently stumbled across this article about Jajah and the iPhone. Jajah, for those of you unfamiliar with the service, is a free telephony provider that lets you make local and international calls[1]. You place the calls at the Jajah website, and they connect first to your regular phone and then to the phone you're calling and they connect the two together.
So why would Jajah be of interest to the iPhone, which presumably has its own calling plan through AT&T/Cingular? Well for one thing Jajah allows you to place international calls using local incoming minutes. Jajah calls your phone before connecting you to your party. Second, if you subscribe to Cingular's "Metro Plan", which offers free incoming calls, you wouldn't use any minutes at all. Of course, this applies only to users in the free calling regions listed on the Jajah website.
It's a nifty article. I recommend you read it all.
[1] Jajah is also the website of choice for April Fools jokes. I'll let you google the details.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/08/iphones-and-jajah/#comments - Choosing the right TV-to-Go
Filed under: iPod Family, Video
Julio Ojeda-Zapata writes about picking the right TV-to-go in a recent Pioneer Press article. It's an interesting article, because he comes at it from a Windows Media Center point of view instead of looking at the many Windows-based solutions that produce iPod- and PSP-compatible video.
He compares the iPod, the Archos 604, and the Philips Portable Media Center, staying focused on the to-go aspects of each. As a portable video watching device he found the iPod to be "painful" and "cramped", a fair criticism with its tiny screen. The other two players scored higher for their larger screens and their PlaysForSure compatibility, a feature that probably would never come into my own personal scoring system.
As for getting Media Center video onto the iPod, Ojeda-Zapata mentions two possible solutions: Roxio's MyTV ToGo and burning to DVD and then ripping. That's just a little too Rube Goldberg for my tastes.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/08/choosing-the-right-tv-to-go/#comments - iView bumped to 3.1.3
Filed under: Software
The "Batman's utility belt" of image catalog tools, iView Media Pro, has been patched to version 3.1.3 -- mostly bug fixes for the app that fills a cross-platform niche underneath heavy DAM hitters like Cumulus. This might very well be the last update to iView's flagship product (one of my longtime favorites) before it gets rebranded as Expression Media by the big MS, so grab it while it's hot.Permalink | Email this | Comments
