- The British like Macs
Apple sales are strong in the UK according to Macworld UK. iPod nanos and shuffles are leaping off the shelf and the high demand for iPods means that some items are now in short supply. Even Mac Pro sales have gone up in anticipation of the release of Adobe CS3. Macworld suggests that the demand for entry-level MacBooks will actually exceed the supply this quarter.
And then there's AppleTV. I'm not sure why Apple TV is such a good seller--pre-orders nearly match the anticipated initial supplies--because there's still no iTunes video store yet for the UK. Perhaps hope springs eternal or people really want to watch iPhoto slideshows or listen to their music on their TV or something like that. UK readers: what's your take on this?

As a lifelong Mac user, I haven't had the pleasure of "switching" (something which seems to happen quite often). Sometimes it goes poorly, I'm sure, and the would-be Mac user goes back to a Windows world. Other times, it goes well...very well.
Blogger The Northlondonhippie is celebrating his second year as a Mac user with a heartfelt post about his beloved iMac:
"Sometimes, even when it's sleeping, I just glance over at it, sitting quietly in the corner, on my desk and I can't believe how good it looks."
Umm...yeah. it's OK to love your Mac, Northlondonhippie, just don't love your Mac. You see what we mean?
Thanks, Sean!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Cult of Mac, Apple
In May of 2001, the first Apple Store descended upon Tysons Corner Center of McLean, Virginia. Six years later, there are now 174 Apple Stores spread across the globe, with the Fifth Avenue location in New York City attracting 50,000 customers per week. Sales average $4,032 per square foot (while shops like Tiffany & Co. stand at a measly $2,666), and in 2004, Apple reached $1 billion in annual sales faster than any US retailer, while sales hit $1 billion per quarter last year.
In short: Apple has become one of the most successful retailers in America. It's not sheer chance or luck that has driven the success of Apple's retail venture, however: Apple has reinvented the design and operation of the retail store from the ground up, as is noted in this excellent and enlightening Fortune Magazine article. Check it out for a fascinating look behind the scenes of the development of the Apple Store, and how Steve Jobs and co. have landed a spot in Fortune's top 10 Most Admired Companies.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Humor, Switchers, Cult of Mac
WFAA has posted an article about the fundamental dualities of the world: Ford vs. Chevy. Coke vs. Pepsi. Mac vs Windows. It's not a very deep article or a long-one, but several quotes (particularly those from WFAA's online operations manager--and Mac aficionado--Doug Boehner) made me laugh out loud. "It's strange and cult-like...Once you kind of drink the Kool-Aid of the Apple product you realize: Oh my gosh, this is what a computer should have been doing all along."
I personally didn't know that retailer JC Penney was switching from Windows to Mac. Good for them!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Bloomberg is contemplating the future of Apple laptops this morning. Specifically, flash-based laptops with no internal hard drives.
It has been suggested that Apple would use NAND flash memory chips in their machines, which are still much pricier than slim hard drives. Of course, NAND chip manufacturers are all for it: "It would be positive for flash memory makers in that new demand can be created from diversified applications,'' said James Song, an analyst at Good Morning Shinhan Securities Co. in Seoul.
It sure would be nice, as laptops could become much thinner (consider that the iPod nano is 80% smaller than a 80GB iPod), lighter and have less moving parts. Plus, we can already boot OS X from a usb flash drive, so why not?

The crew at Outer Level (developers of the kid-friendly, bug-chomping game Bullfrog) apparently have a problem in common with me, and plenty of other Mac users: too many software license codes and no system for organizing them. Excel and FileMaker, too bulky; flat text files, too plain; leave them in email and let Spotlight sort them out... tempting... but no. Enter LicenseKeeper, a $20 solution to this age-old challenge.
LicenseKeeper 1.0 will let you type or copy in your registration info, sure -- but it's also prepared to keep track of vendor website URLs, support email addresses, and lots of the other bitsies that tend to go missing when you need them. It will import directly from Mail.app and scan for serial numbers in the inbound registration message (a killer feature if you use Mail; I'm waiting for the equivalent Entourage capability). You can even attach files to the serial number records. A downloadable demo will handle up to five license records and three attachments each before asking you to pay up.
There are two other options for this task that I haven't mentioned so far: a general snippet organizer like Yojimbo or KIT, or a free license tracker like Licensed. Either path might work for you if LicenseKeeper isn't to your taste.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/08/licensekeeper-tracks-your-serial-number-collection/#comments - Two versions of Photoshop CS3 coming your way
Filed under: Multimedia, Software
When the complete Adobe Creative Suite 3 package is revealed on March 27, Adobe will announce not one, but two distinct versions of Photoshop, including a standard Photoshop CS3 and the new Photoshop CS3 Extended. Photoshop CS3 Extended includes the same tools as Photoshop CS3, but it also contains a brand new set of features for the integration of 3D and motion graphics, and image measurement and analysis functions. This marks the first occasion (edit: since Photoshop 5.0 Limited Edition?) in which more than one version of Photoshop will be made available, with the new version targeted at individuals in the fields of video, architecture, engineering, medicine, and science.
With the new PS CS3 Extended, video editors and artists can perform 3D model visualization and texture editing functions, as well as the ability to paint and clone over multiple video frames. Final animations can be exported as QuickTime, MPEG-4, and Flash video, among others formats. Additionally, users in the scientific, medical, and architectural fields will be able to extract quantitative and qualitative data from images with special measurement and analysis tools, with support for specialized image formats.
Kevin Connor, senior director of product management for Adobe digital imaging says: "At one point in time, we considered separate versions, but we found a lot of overlap in the features that these people needed.... Rather than create a new application, Extended is a superset of features that can specifically benefit people in those markets." An official list of features for Photoshop CS3 Extended, in addition to pricing information will be unveiled on March 27, and the complete CS3 suite will launch later in the spring.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Adium 1.0.1 is a great (and long-awaited) release for the free & open-source multiplatform chat client. The work, however, continues, and the Adium developers are politely asking for your help. First, there are a slew of items that need user feedback, and you can do that, right? Second, additional skilled devs are wanted so that some of the "cool but challenging" features on deck (video and audio chat, anyone?) can be tackled. Let's show the fine folks behind the quacking some TUAW love.

The "Batman's utility belt" of image catalog tools, iView Multimedia, has been patched to version 3.1.3 -- mostly bug fixes for the app that fills a cross-platform niche underneath heavy DAM hitters like Cumulus. This might very well be the last update to iView's flagship product (one of my longtime favorites) before it gets rebranded as Expression Media by the big MS, so grab it while it's hot.Permalink | Email this | Comments

The TUAW Podcast is upon us, and for #21 I decided on a screencast of that NetNewsWire 3 beta sneak peek released a couple weeks ago. The new version is a slick piece of work with a lot of nice new features, and I go over all the good stuff in just under 8 minutes. This H264/AAC podcast weighs in at 800 x 450 and 42MB, and can be had from our iTunes Store Podcast directory, this direct link or our own podcast rss feed. Enjoy!
P.S. - don't forget to digg us in the digg podcast directory as well!
[Update: It seems we had some problems with properly linking the podcast directly and for the iTS, but things should be good to go now. The direct link is now working, and our iTS podcast directory should refresh at least within an hour or two, but likely within 30 minutes.]Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Features, How-tos, Productivity, Tips and tricks
Along with Quicksilver, TextExpander is one of my must-have Mac utilities. TextExpander is a "snippet" utility that will automatically paste in content based on user defined abbreviations. For instance, I have "bc" set to expand to "because." However, the pasted text can be much longer (e.g. "sig" becomes a several line email signature). Today on the SmileOnMyMac Blog, I ran across a great tip I hadn't previously known about TextExpander (RTFM), viz. that you can use "%clipboard" as a variable in your snippets. When the snippet expands the clipboard content is automatically placed wherever "%clipboard" appears. The original tip involved using this to create Amazon.com links, but it quickly occurred to me that I could use this to easily create hyperlinks when for posting on blog comments (not TUAW) or on forums.Continue reading TextExpander Tip: Using the Clipboard in a Snippet
