- Sex industry embraces FaceTime, world feigns surprise
Filed under: iPhone
When I first saw the iPhone 4 FaceTime demo, I knew it wouldn't take much time before rule 34 took effect. It was inevitable that Apple's video chat tech would be used by the sex industry as a new way to deliver live adult content to customers.
Despite Steve Jobs' best efforts to keep the iOS platform porn-free, the sex industry continues to find ways to work around the edges. While the iOS platform may be carefully guarded in terms of adult-oriented applications, there's little Apple can do to make sure your phone calls, chats, videos and Safari browsing stay clean. Truthfully, for iPhone users who are consenting adults, it's not really Apple's business.
Joel Schectman of the Associated Press reports that the 3 million+ device iPhone 4 ecosystem is already an attractive target for the porn industry. Porn companies are advertising for model positions specific to FaceTime in at least five different cities on Craigslist.
Meanwhile, adult production studios like Pink Visual -- not coincidentally one of the first adult production companies to create an iPad optimized service -- says it will let customers video chat with some of the same models in their videos. Pink Visual's service will be released in the next few weeks and will probably cost around $5 to $6 a minute.TUAWSex industry embraces FaceTime, world feigns surprise originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 21:00:00 EST. It's the first of August -- already? -- and we're back live tonight on Talkshoe, so call in and chat with us about the biggest Apple stories of the past week.
On the docket this evening, we'll be talking about what iPad owners (and the iPad's detractors) are like, the revised iMacs and Mac Pro, Apple's new battery charger and the Magic Trackpad, running iOS 4 on an older iPhone, and what exactly happened to the Michael Jackson zombie.
To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.
If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac or your PC, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients or using the Talkshoe client's ShoePhone tool; basic instructions are here.

Have you been waiting for an easy-to-use jailbreak for your iOS 4.x device? Well, you may have to wait a little longer. Last we checked, the just-announced browser-based jailbreak (a return of jailbreakme.com) was so swamped that the server stopped responding. Jailbreak expert Comex tweets that he is working to restore the site from heavy loads.
Once that happens, you should be able to jailbreak your iDevice by browsing to jailbreakme.com in your mobile Safari application. There you'll be presented with a simple slide-to-jailbreak screen. So far, TUAW has been unable to reach the jailbreakme site to test out the new jailbreak but is looking forward to trying it out when the server gets back in business.TUAWiPhone devteam releases browser-based 4.x jailbreak originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 18:15:00 EST. Jailbreak - Apple - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iPhone 3GПереслать - Competitive antenna tests now gone from Apple site
Filed under: iPhone
Some of our observant readers have noted that the Apple web site is no longer showing videos of competing cell phones dropping bars and signal when held in a 'death grip' like the one made infamous on the new iPhone 4.
CNET got a comment from Apple PR on the change: "We constantly refresh the content on Apple.com. If you'd like access to [the videos], you can find them archived on YouTube.com/Apple." [Never mind the irony that in order to see Apple's competitive marketing efforts, you go to a Google-owned site. -Ed.]
Was Apple frightened off, perhaps by potential law suits, or did the campaign run its course? I'd be betting on the latter. I think Apple accomplished what it wanted to, by raising awareness of reception issues on other smart phones. Apple resorted to the tests only after Nokia, Motorola and others criticized the Apple design either in public statements or in ads.
On the other hand, there is no doubt that some people were seeing the issue, while others reported that everything was just fine. Some of our readers told us their Blackberry, Nokia and Motorola phones had problems just like what was shown in the Apple videos, while others said they could not duplicate it.
The competitor tests Apple posted to YouTube are still there, but it's probably safe to say that Apple is now out of the antenna testing business, at least for cell phones the company doesn't make.
Thanks to our sharp-eyed readers who noticed the change on the Apple web site.TUAWCompetitive antenna tests now gone from Apple site originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - YouTube - Apple.comПереслать - App Review: EveryGame offers up (potentially) every game
Filed under: iPhone, App Review, iPad
Ever wanted to open up an iPad app and have an entire game closet with just about every game ever tumble out? Well, given enough time, that's what could happen with an appropriately titled app called EveryGame [$3.99, universal].
The app is the brainchild of Andrew and Nathaniel Dirksen and it's a strange little bird. Basically, the app is a way for graphics files to sit on top of other files - i.e., a pawn image in a board image - and EveryGame is designed from the bottom up to make it possible to play the game you want on the iDevice you have.
There are a lot of apps with multiple board games built in (something we want to review/compare in the coming weeks, so if you've got a suggestion for a good one, say so in the comments), but EveryGame allows you to build your own. Sure, there are computer-based apps that offer this functionality (like Vassal), but those don't have a magical touch screen. How does EveryGame work in practice? Is it the game closet app to beat all others? Read on to find out.

iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - BoardGameПереслать - Pocket Universe updated with iPhone 4 gyro support
Filed under: iPhone
Pocket Universe has always been one of the best of the astronomy apps, and I reviewed the earlier version positively. I like the use of augmented reality to overlay a star chart on the real sky, and there are lots of features like astronomy news, a planning module for any particular night, and quick and easy guides to finding visible comets and other nighttime events. With some nice clear summer nights there are plenty of things to see and appreciate.
The app has now been updated, and is one of the first science apps to use the iPhone 4 gyroscope. According to John Kennedy, who wrote the program, using the gyroscope speeds up orienting the phone position, because the internal compass is a bit slow and prone to interference.
The app doesn't need internet access, except for astronomy news and linking to Wikipedia articles. All the star charts and graphics are contained in the app. Pocket Universe supports a night vision mode, which turns the stars and object labels red, keeping bright glare away from sensitive eyes.

IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Astronomy - Wikipedia - SmartphoneПереслать - Apple wins design patents
Apple picked up quite a few pending design patents this week -- most of them are pretty old, for products that have released but were simply waiting on the official patent. You can see the whole list over on Macsimum News -- they've got the iPod classic in there, the Apple remote, and quite a few patents for handling various functions of iOS or OS X.
One of the more interesting ones is patent number 7,7645,236, which seems to describe a broadband antenna, much like the one currently used around the edge of the iPhone 4. Obviously, that's been an object of contention on the new iPhone, but the patent was approved, so Apple owns this design, whatever it is.
The wording on the patent is kind of interesting in hindsight -- the patent describes a ground and a resonating element that may lie on the same plane, and they may "be separated by a gap that lies in the common plane." The patent summary then says that, "Electronic components such as the integrated circuits, display, and battery can be mounted in the handheld device so that they do not overlap the gap between the ground element and the resonating element." Guess Apple didn't actually consider your fingers to be "electronic components."
It's kind of incredible to think of all the various innovations Apple is churning out. So many patents get filed and never get used again, but Apple's laying claim to some pretty big developments here in somewhat sizable numbers. It makes you wonder just what things are like around the engineering offices in Cupertino -- there's a lot of solid innovation going on there these days.TUAWApple wins design patents originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 11:30:00 EST.
