- Rumor: iPad config page mentions camera
Filed under: iPad
It's already more or less a not-so-well-kept secret that the iPad will very likely have a camera eventually, but just in case you needed yet another hint that that's the case, Apple has provided. AppleInsider found a security document over on Apple's website (I think this is the one [PDF] though it appears to have been edited) that says the iPad has a restriction setting that will cut off "use of the camera" with an Exchange policy or a certain configuration. That would indeed seem to indicate that some future form of the iPad will come camera-equipped.
Or does it? While AppleInsider's document explicitly shows an iPad, here's the iPhone Security Overview, and it looks like a lot of the text was cut-and-pasted from the document for the little handset to the one about Apple's tablet. It's possible this is just a typo, basically -- whoever was writing the new document for the iPad just forgot to take out the part about restricting the camera. Since both devices run iOS, there are probably a lot of similarities between each, and a lot of reused documentation.
Even if this is just a mistake, though, the building evidence for a future iPad camera is hard to ignore. It's a sure thing that we'll eventually see an updated version of the iPad hardware, and once that comes around, it's hard to believe Apple isn't strongly considering putting a camera (or two) on the device.

Apple - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppleInsider - IPadПереслать - Cloud-based iTunes will be "modest in scope"
We've heard a lot of rumors about a cloud-based iTunes service, and apparently Apple is working on exactly that, but the company has reportedly told a few music label executives that any service that debuts will be only "modest in scope." CNET says that Apple's strategy isn't exactly clear -- apparently Apple doesn't have the agreements it needs with music companies to actually distribute music from the cloud, but Apple has instead put streaming service Lala (which it acquired late last year) to work on video streaming, not music. Of course, this is all second- and third-hand, and Apple has yet to officially comment on the matter, but it sounds like Apple is working on something more like YouTube or Hulu than a music streaming service. The cloud-based deal would consist of "digital shelves," where users could store videos or other media, rather than a full music library.
Interesting. There's no question that a cloud-based music database would be extremely popular, and indeed Google is already working on just that, supposedly. Engadget notes that the iPhone 4 launched with the same memory capacities as the 3GS -- perhaps memory isn't such an issue when you can store your movies in the cloud? It seems like Apple's past relationships with the record companies are making the road a little bumpy, so the first official word we see of the iTunes cloud may have nothing to do with distributed music whatsoever.

Переслать - Found footage: Automate Foursquare with Future Checkins
Filed under: iPhone
I'm a fan of Foursquare, the social networking app that allows you to check into locations that you visit. Don't ask me why -- I find it to be somewhat intrusive, but I love the fact that I can be the mayor of a number of places I frequent. The only problem is that if I'm running a lot of errands, pulling out my iPhone to check in at each location can be annoying and time-consuming.
Enter developer Tim Sears, who has come up with the perfect solution for Foursquare aficionados. His new app, Future Checkin (US$0.99 introductory price), uses the backgrounding features of iOS 4 on the iPhone 4 and 3GS to constantly check your location and then automatically check you into Foursquare locations that you frequent. No longer do you have to remember to check in -- your iPhone will do it for you.
Sears does warn you that using Future Checkin will reduce your battery life as it constantly checks your location. I can see where the app would be very useful if you have your iPhone plugged in while running errands, as the battery concerns would be minimized. Future Checkin is definitely a unique solution to a rather silly problem, and I love the fact that I now have one less thing to remember to do.TUAWFound footage: Automate Foursquare with Future Checkins originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 15:30:00 EST. The folks at Minty Boost have unveiled a rather interesting Apple secret: just how the company charges its devices. In the video on the next page, you can see the whole process reverse-engineered. It's rather technical, but as long as you make sure all the wires go where they need to go (you need to lay out a certain series of resistors on the USB data lines, so that the device thinks it's hooked up to an official charger), you can actually build your own iPhone or iPod charger.
In fact, there's a new Minty Boost kit which comes with prebuilt circuitry that you can use (inside an Altoids tin or whatever you want to use) to create your own iPhone USB charger. You can read about the whole process of reverse engineering Apple's process over on the official blog -- it's fascinating both how Apple implemented this process of "verifying" a certain USB charger, and also how Minty Boost eventually figured it out. It's definitely very technical, especially when you get into some of the final steps of amps and volts, but the bottom line is that by lining up those resistor levels, almost anyone can put together a working charger for any Apple device.Keep in mind that if you aren't familiar with basic electronics safety, these are not the projects for you.

iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - iPod - Battery chargerПереслать - Bringing the Remote app shine back to the iPod app
Filed under: iOS
Sachin Agarwal, co-founder and CEO of Posterous, wrote a blog post yesterday calling Apple a "huge start-up." Fair enough description, but what really interested me about the post was Agarwal had some info on one of my favorite iPhone apps - the Apple Remote. The app, if you aren't familiar with it, allows you to turn any iPhone or iPod touch into a remote for your computer's iTunes library. It's a terrific little app that hasn't been updated in over eight months -- even while most of Apple's in-house apps have been. Why? Agarwal says that the Remote app is written by a single person at Apple and he is busy with other projects at the moment.
All that's interesting, but the real reason I'm writing this is so that Apple will listen again and give this coder a big fat raise and put him to work on the actual iPod app for iPhone and Music app for iPod touch. As you can see above, the layout of the two apps are fairly similar. However, the Apple Remote app is much easier to navigate thanks to the big, colorful playlist icons that mimic the ones you see in iTunes. Those icons make your playlists more distinguishable -- something that is always welcomed on a small screen.
It's a small difference, yes, but one that makes the user experience that much better. I always had wondered why Apple would add the colorful icon features in the Remote app, but not in the main music player apps on the iPhone and iPod touch. Now I know -- because it wasn't Apple, but a single developer on staff that put a little extra love into his project. For that, I hope Apple takes notice, gives the guy a raise, puts him back on the Remote app project so he can update it for the iPad, and most of all use his excellent ideas to make the regular music player apps that much better.TUAWBringing the Remote app shine back to the iPod app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:30:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone OS - IPod TouchПереслать - Jailbreakme site utilizes PDF exploit in iOS
We reported on the return of browser-based jailbreakme.com yesterday. Today IT security guru F-Secure revealed just how the site is able to work.
The jailbreak method utilizes a PDF exploit found in the iOS software. Charlie Miller with Independent Security Evaluators, tweeted, " Starting to get a handle on jailbreakme.com exploit. Very beautiful work. Scary how it totally defeats Apple's security architecture."
What the exploit does is take a PDF sitting in a subdirectory of jailbreakme.com, shown on the right, and brings it into your device. PDF browsing is done through Safari, and the jailbreak exploits that weakness by using a corrupted font placed inside the PDF file to crash the Compact Font Format handler and allows access to the iOS.
iPhone devteam member chpwn told us today, "There are other (public) exploits in Safari, including some on Apple's website that are fixed in desktop Safari but not iOS. Therefore, the JailbreakMe exploit isn't really a big deal for security."
And even if it is, apparently there are other ways into the system. Comex, author of the exploit, sent a tweet yesterday saying, "M aybe I'll rely on USB based stuff for the next jailbreak so that Apple won't patch it so fast."

Safari - iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPhone OSПереслать - Why Jailbreak?
Filed under: iPhone, Jailbreak/pwnage, iPad, iOS
I'm curious: why do people jailbreak?
Ever since the Library of Congress ruled in favor of jailbreaking although it may void your warranty and now there is a browser-based jailbreak, I've started to pay attention to jailbreaking, at least a little.
My friend Jeff Barszcz posted some of his reasons, and I found some of them really compelling.
The last time I really paid attention was before Apple opened the App Store, and I'm guessing a lot has changed since then.
Here is what I know about jailbreaking: 1) there's a program that lets you run any program in the background, 2) there's an app to turn your iPhone into a Wi-Fi hotspot, 3) there's a program that gives you quick access to turn things like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Data on and off quickly, as well as adjust settings, 4) there's an app that lets you access your iOS device via SSH and you ought to change the default passwords if you turn on SSH.
Let me be clear: I'm asking for specific examples of applications and uses that people find with jailbreaking which aren't available otherwise. I'm less interested in philosophical reasons involving the words such as "freedom" and "open" although I understand those are compelling reasons for some people.
So, dear readers, tell me: what jailbreak apps you think are "must haves" that might convince someone to become a jailbreaker?Image via FHKE on Flickr.

iPhone - App Store - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone OSПереслать - Viewfinder for iPad review and interview with Fraser Speirs
Most Mac users know Fraser Speirs as the developer of FlickrExport which allows you to easily export pictures from iPhoto or Aperture to Flickr. Most iPhone users probably know him from Darkslide (formerly "Exposure"), a Flickr client that he developed for the iPhone. Back in September of 2008, he posted that he would not develop additional applications for the App Store because of the way that apps had been both rejected without explanation or (even worse) accepted and then removed without warning.
That changed in May of 2010 when he announced that he was "Back in" to iOS development, due to the iPad. The end result of that decision is Viewfinder for iPad, a "photo search and download" app for iPad.
Fraser's story has interested me from the beginning because (at least in my experience) it's fairly rare in life that someone makes such a public, definitive statement and then later reverses it. While I suspect the "knee jerk" reaction to hearing his story is negative, I find it compelling because of his honesty. Adults can (and do) change their minds. Some might see it as a weakness (anyone remember the 2004 US presidential election and the term "waffle"?) but I see it as a sign of maturity.
I've been using Viewfinder for a few weeks (Fraser, like many developers, provided a review code for that purpose), but wanted to do more than just a review of the app itself, but also talk to him about this story. He agreed to an email interview, which was the most practical way of doing it since he is in Scotland and I'm in the USA.

iPhone - AppStore - Apple - FraserSpeirs - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - iPad ads more lucrative than iPhone spots
Here's an interesting little finding regarding Apple's iOS devices -- Mobclix claims that for the month of July 2010, ads on the iPad were actually more lucrative than ads running on iPhone apps. The effective cost per thousand impressions is actually five times higher on the iPad than on the iPhone, which means that because there are fewer iPads around (but presumably ad rates are currently around even for the two devices), advertisers are actually paying much more to reach the same amount of people on the larger device as the smaller one.
But that cost is paying off -- iPad users tend to spend about three times as much time playing with apps on their devices versus iPhone users of the same apps. Of course, given the brevity of a typical iPhone usage profile, that's still only about ten minutes more per app on the iPad. But it's quite clear already that the iPad presents a different use case, and that advertisers will have to consider the two almost completely different audiences.
Keep in mind that the iPad is still in its relative infancy -- the iPhone has only been around for a few years, but we're still only talking about a few months (and even less than that, considering these numbers come from July) on the iPad. It'll be interesting to see how these two devices continue to diverge in the future.TUAWiPad ads more lucrative than iPhone spots originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - App StoreПереслать - iPhone 4 prices from around the world
Filed under: iPhone
Now that the iPhone 4 is available around most of the world, iFun designed this interesting little infographic that compares the various prices of the handset around the globe. Note that all of these prices are in Euros, and that they all reflect the out-of-contract price -- because the US iPhones are locked to the AT&T network currently, our country doesn't appear on this list.
But if you want to buy an unlocked iPhone elsewhere in the world, you should probably go with Hong Kong, where an unlocked 16gb phone will set you back US $653. Italy sells the costliest iPhones, with the price reaching up over US$1000 there for an unlocked phone.
This whole thing is really just more of a fun comparison rather than a really solid analysis -- most people who want an iPhone will probably buy it in the country where they live, especially if they need a certain contract. But it is interesting to see just where Apple has determined it can go higher on the price, either because of certain tariffs or shipping that must be paid, or just because the demographic calls for it.

IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - Hong Kong - AT&TПереслать - Magic Eraser magically cleans your Apple products
Filed under: Odds and ends, Apple
Besides its usefulness cleaning walls, tables and shoes, the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is excellent at cleaning many Apple products. If your white MacBook is starting to look brown and your Apple iPad Case has stains from who knows where, the Magic Eraser just may be your solution. And at $2.99 for a two-pack, it's not that big a gamble.
The Magic Eraser and similar products are made of Melamine foam and, for consumer household use, acts like extremely fine sandpaper. This allows it to get into tiny grooves and pits to "erase" stains.
Per instructions on the package, just add some water to the Magic Eraser and begin gently -- and I repeat, gently -- rubbing it on the surface area of what you're cleaning. As you're dealing with electronics, it's a good idea to turn off the device and not use too much water.
With the Magic Eraser, I was able to remove all the grease from my burgers and French fries from my Apple iPad case. It looked almost new again.
Although Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser is one of the more commonly known brands of Melamine foam-based cleaners, others exist. They include the 3M Scotch Brite Easy Erasing Pad and the Nano Sponge. Store brands, which are commonly less expensive, also exist and I've found them to work just as well as national brands.
As is the case with cleaning anything expensive, especially electronics, it'd be wise to be extra cautious. This includes test cleaning on a small area, and not over applying water. TUAW assumes no liability for any damage to your equipment caused by the use or misuse of this product.

I've been getting more and more into running lately, and while I've been tending towards long distance running, one of the best ways to beef up your running expertise is by doing what's called HIIT -- high intensity interval training. You sprint at a certain speed for a period of a few minutes in length, rest for another interval a few minutes in length, and then sprint all out again. It's interesting (and effective, I hear), but you've really got to track times and make sure you're moving when you're supposed to be.
Enter Seconds, an app designed to either track and run HIIT workouts or any other timed workout periods (boxing and MMA are also fitness pastimes which usually depend on rigidly defined periods of endurance training). With a clean and simple interface, the app comes with a few preset interval-based workouts, or you can set your own intervals. You can even program music and playlists to go along with whatever you're doing.
It's definitely not an all-purpose app for working out or anything else -- even with HIIT, odds are that you're combining this type of training with other exercise in some way. Seconds isn't meant to track calories burned or just work as a standard stopwatch. It's specifically designed to work as an interval timer. For that specific purpose, it serves the role well. Rather than fumbling around with a stopwatch and doing the math as you sprint around a track, Seconds makes it really easy to just let your iPhone handle the timing, so you can focus on getting the most of your HIIT workout. It's available for an introductory price of $1.99 in the App Store right now.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Seconds originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 08:00:00 EST. Last week I had a chance to try out Captain's Log, an iPhone app meant to promote the latest Trek feature. As a Trekkie, I wondered how long it would be before someone made a nice Trek-style communicator for the iPhone. This isn't the first, but it's pretty, fun and makes use of the iPhone 4's gyroscope. Here's what I found while playing around.
Look and feel
Turn it on and you're greeted with familiar Star Trek sounds. I'll let the Trekkies among you ID what you hear, but there's communication noises, the famous "woosh" of the ship's doors opening and closing and of course the chirp that accompanies flipping open a communicator.
Speaking of which, yes, you can flip it open. At first you'll see a pulsating Starfleet logo and a window displaying a rotating 360º view of the Enterprise (more on that later). To open the communicator, either jiggle the phone or slide your finger up across the screen.

Visual Poet is pretty much Magnetic Poetry for your iPad. Instead of tiny refrigerator magnets, you get an app that allows you to tweak word strips made to resemble the magnets of your liking, then bring in any photos that you wish.
The idea is cute, and the app itself look gorgeous. Unfortunately, the usability has suffered. To create poetry, you pull in an image from Flickr, Google, Tumblr or your iPad's photo library. However, you can only log into your Tumblr account. The closest for Flickr is searching for your photostream.
Once you've found your photos, you have to scroll through a long list of images on a narrow filmstrip. If a photo is selected from the bottom of the list, it immediately snaps back to the top. It's a waste of time, and I gave up on it and tried pulling from my iPad photo library. The app immediately crashed. I finally got it to work, but only after the iPad froze several times. You then zoom in on the area of the image you want to use by using your fingers to create a red box over the area.
For text, tap on the smaller image above the one you just imported. It's not obvious, however, as there is no integrated tool tip telling you that this is the text area, and it took a bit of guesswork to realize that it wasn't just showing you the photo crop. With the comparisons to Magnetic Poetry, I expected a small list of words to drag onto the image, which would actually be a bit more fun.
Once your masterpiece is complete, you can email your work to share it. You can also auto-generate photo credits to properly credit your sources or write them in.
The app is not that bad for US$2.99, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite so buggy. It also does not work in landscape mode, which is a definite turnoff for some. I think if the bugs were ironed out and the ability to log into your Flickr account and album support within those services was added, this would be a cute app for all those pet and/or kid photos lurking on your hard drive.TUAWVisual Poet: Good, but buggy idea originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. Last November, I wrote a post about the Pomodoro Technique of getting things done. The technique involves using a tomato-shaped kitchen timer to get you to concentrate on work for a set period of time before taking a mandatory break, and it's very useful for those of us who tend to get easily distracted.
Well, I'm also a fan of steampunk, so when an email from ThinkOrange introduced me to The Amazing Mechanical Pomodoro, I just had to bite. The US$1.99 app is probably the best looking Pomodoro timer I've ever seen, with a nice Victorian-looking set of instructions about the Pomodoro Technique, a lovely brass, wood, and ivory timer, and even a history of your completed Pomodoros.
However, there is a tiny bug about the size of an adult rhinoceros beetle in this app that currently makes it a bit worthless, other than being extremely nice looking. When the iPhone goes to sleep, the counter stops counting down. Since I don't wish to keep my iPhone's screen active during most of my work, that's a huge problem that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. The timer also gets reset to zero if you tap on the "How It Works" or "History" buttons at the bottom of the screen.
It's nice enough to make me want to put on a rough wool suit and hat to do my work, but only if I can also give my 27" iMac a bit of that Victorian flair before I start. Filed under: iPhone, App Store
We've heard a lot of interesting things from big companies on the App Store -- some of them have released games and apps with not a lot of success compared to more high-profile indie groups, while some seem to have nailed down a little bit of profit from Apple's platform. Capcom is apparently finding itself in that first group -- the company's latest financial reports state that it is fairly disappointed in the performance of its App Store titles. Resident Evil 4 sales have "increased gradually," while even more anticipated apps like Street Fighter IV and Phoenix Wright have only "achieved their projected sales." Which may be good news, but it's not exactly a glowing result for Capcom's App Store efforts.
Meanwhile, EA's partner Bioware is licking its wounds from its first iPhone effort. Greg Zeschuk says that Mass Effect on the iPhone "wasn't even a mistake as much as we took a guess, our guess was wrong, and we learned something in the process -- that the fundamental tactile gameplay is actually the key thing on the platform." He sounds really disappointed with sales -- he says that the company originally believed a strong story could keep players interested even through fairly generic gameplay, but it turns out that iPhone gamers are more interested in the experience than the text that backs it up (not hard to see -- look at Doodle Jump, Angry Birds, or any other huge iPhone games with barely any backstory at all).
It's interesting to see big companies dealing with the App Store platform, and struggling to figure out how to implement iPhone apps. I think we'll see even more experimenting on this front from even major software studios.TUAWCapcom and Bioware disappointed in iPhone app performance originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 18:00:00 EST. Most (probably all) of you who are or will soon be slapping a case on your iPhone 4 won't have a case that protects the screen from scratches. Well, except those of you with flip-top cases that cover the entire unit. When I received my iPhone 4, I wanted to immediately protect the screen, but the only thing available at the time was sticky films that are either permanently affixed to your screen with adhesive, or require a lot of post-clean-up when you decide to remove or replace it.
The screen protector I really wanted was one I'd used with much success on my iPhone 3G: Crystal Film from Power Support. The most appealing thing about these is that they adhere to your iPhone's screen with static, not sticky goop, and they stay put. When you want to replace or remove the film (which you won't have to do often), it's painless.

Just like all of Blizzard's games, StarCraft 2's Mac version actually comes shipped on the same DVD that the PC version comes on, which means that day, date and version are all available for us Mac gamers. Even in the days of Steam on the Mac, that's going above and beyond the call for those of us who like to do our gaming on the Mac.
But Blizzard's got another little bonus for us Mac fans -- the game contains the parody ad above, presenting the iPistol, complete with a dancing Space Marine showing off the personal weapon unit. Funny.
Of course the reference is a little dated -- we haven't seen those dancing ads on TV in years. But this game's been in development for a while, and seeing that Marine break it down is pretty funny, so we'll give them an iBreak on this one.

Blizzard Entertainment - Unofficial Apple Weblog - StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty - Real-time strategy - AppleПереслать - Apple quietly slips into number three spot in global portable market
Filed under: iPad
Who would have thought that headline would ever appear? Well it has, and if you count the iPad Apple has just passed Asus, Toshiba, Dell and Lenovo and is now the number three producer of portables.
That's the word from Fortune this morning, quoting Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore. Using the June quarter numbers from the banking company, Apple has moved from the seventh spot in the global portable market, trailing only HP and Acer.
Not fair you say? Well Deutsche Bank says iPad sales are cannibalizing demand for other notebooks, and the report also notes that sales of Apple laptops are also climbing.

Apple - Toshiba - Deutsche Bank - IPad - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - TUAW exclusive: Cannon Cadets brings frantic robot-killing action to iPhone
I spent about the last two weeks working my way through the levels of Angry Birds HD, a wacky and addictive game for iPad in which you slingshot birds at pigs to kill them. Yeah, I know it sounds weird, but if you have played the game, you know that it's a great way to kill a fewhoursdays worth of spare time. When I was approached about previewing a new, similar game called Cannon Cadets, my first inclination was that it wasn't going to be as fun.
I'm glad to say I was wrong. Based on a pre-release version of the game I tested, Cannon Cadets from XMG Studio is a blast (no pun intended). As you can see in the video above, the back story consists of an evil monkey who has created an army of robots to kill all of the fun in the universe. Rather than using a slingshot to fire suicidal birds, you use a small cannon to fire small characters at the robots. There are a number of different planets on which you can play, each with a variety of increasingly difficult levels. As with Angry Birds, sometimes a straight shot at a target is not the answer, while blasting away at structures causes them to topple and knock off a bunch of robots.
There are flying targets that, when destroyed, provide access to hidden levels. Other targets launch your characters when destroyed, so a direct hit can take out a string of robots. If you're unsuccessful in killing off the robots in a level, you can either try again or move to another level to try your luck.
The graphics in Cannon Cadets appear to be optimized for the iPhone 4's Retina Display, since they really pop on the device. The game is expected to be in the App Store soon; stay tuned to TUAW and we'll let you know when you can start killing robots. Cannon Cadets will be released for iPhone and iPod touch first, followed by a version for iPad.TUAWTUAW exclusive: Cannon Cadets brings frantic robot-killing action to iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. iPhone - App Store - Apple - IPod Touch - IPhone OSПереслать - Rumor: Update on white iPhone manufacturing
Filed under: iPhone
Website WhiteiPhone4Now, which happens to sell DIY white iPhone case kits, has posted pictures supposedly showing the front of a white iPhone.
The focus of the change depicted in their photos seems to be what they're calling a "rough & bent" condition resulting from the manufacturing process. It appears that the top case is rendered less-than-perfect in manufacturing, and as a result doesn't sit completely flush when the phone is assembled. They also claim, according to their "OEM sources," that the process has been adjusted to successfully remove this imperfection.
Apple intended to sell a white iPhone at the initial launch, only to announce that it would be delayed by a few weeks and eventually several months. Since then, sites like WhiteiPhone4Now have offered patience-deprived customers a way to bring a little #ffffff to their iPhones without delay.
In the meantime, Apple's workers are obviously fixing the solution. Good luck to all of them.

Apple - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Manufacturing - smartphoneПереслать - Readdle's anniversary sale and iPad giveaway
Readdle started developing iOS apps three years ago as of yesterday, and to celebrate they are discounting all of their apps (a rare occurrence for them) and offering up three iPads in a giveaway for Twitter followers of the company. More details can be found here.
For you math students out there you may realize that three years of app development on iOS means Readdle actually provided a document reader app before the App Store opened. Their apps are quite awesome, although they sometimes suffer from too many features (if simplicity is your thing). When we reviewed Scanner Pro, for example, the UI was a little overwhelming for TJ. Still, Readdle Docs is one of the best document viewers out there, and Flash Drive offers up some nice features like ZIP compression support. We reviewed BookReader here.
All of these apps (and more) are on sale for just $.99 until later today. For more info on the iPad giveaway, check Readdle's page here.TUAWReaddle's anniversary sale and iPad giveaway originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. Second, I learned that keeping your arm elevated as you FaceTime is really, really awkward (not to mention tiring). As you're probably aware, if you've used FaceTime for any length of time, if you don't hold your unit fairly high up, you tend to share unflattering nasal visuals.TUAWMy3G bypasses 3G restrictions originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST. Переслать - New site for iPhone photographers
Filed under: iPhone
With millions of iPhones in users' hands and a huge number of photograph apps in the App Store, this project seemed inevitable. Photographer David Cleland of FlixelPix has launched iPhonific, an gallery for straight-from-the-iPhone snaps; no Photoshop or Aperture allowed.
That isn't to say that tweaking is frowned upon. Instead, it's restricted to App Store apps. The idea is that you shoot, edit and upload your photos entirely with the iPhone. Hardware tweaking isn't out of the question either (DIY DSLR, anyone?) as long as the image never hits a laptop or desktop computer prior to submission.
The shots are broken down into categories, and the neat thing is that each snap lists the apps used to process it prior to submission. For example, Camera+ and Photo fx were used on this image.
For now it's largely a gallery of David's work but he tells me that he'll be opening it up to "Guest "iPhonographers" soon. It's a fun idea. Check it out if you're into shooting pictures with your iPhone.

MicrosoftOffice - Microsoft - Apple - Microsoft Word - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Has iPad addiction contributed to its growth?
There's a short post over at the Business Insider about the author's view of the success of the iPad, based on how interested (e.g., addicted) his kids are in the device. It got me thinking -- is the fact that kids love the iPad a good measure of its success? Well, yes and no.
In my gaming experience, technology of this kind can get outdated pretty quickly if something new comes to market. The minute something new and more interesting hits the stores -- and kids are speaking of the wonder of these new devices to their friends -- the older devices are suddenly not so hip and cool anymore.
I do wonder, though, how many iPad purchasers have found that other family members have stolen away with the device enough times, that they've just gone out and bought another iPad? Or maybe even two? While kids might be addicted to the fun an iPad can provide, their addiction is just taking the fun (and work) away from us adults!
Have you bought more than one iPad because of the addiction it's brought to the rest of your family?

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Addiction - IPad - Business Insider - TechnologyПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Marble Mixer
Marble Mixer is a cute little title that probably won't appeal to everyone, but if you have fond memories of shooting marbles as a kid or just want to try out a fun "flick-and-shoot" interface, it's worth the 99 cent download. The game's got three modes -- Table Tactics has you shooting at a target, trying to knock others' marbles out without hitting your own, Space Mania is a crazy mode where it's everyone for themselves during a time limit, and Monster Picnic has you trying to feed a colorful monster with as many marbles as you can. The game has a really fun look and feel -- it's simple, but especially if you're playing with kids, that really works in the game's favor.
Multiplayer is probably the way to do it -- the iPad version, with the larger screen, is probably the best experience for this one. The iPhone version was released just recently, and while it's easy to see why the app isn't universal (the scale makes a big difference), both versions have a good amount of fun to be enjoyed. There is a set of Facebook leaderboards, but this app is much more about real-life competition than anything online. With this app, an iPhone or iPad and a few competitive players, you can definitely get your dollar's worth.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Marble Mixer originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 08:00:00 EST.
