- Found Footage: Case-mate will freak you out with iPhone case commercials
Case-mate has decided to promote its new iPhone and iPad case-making site (one tip, Case-mate: Don't create an iPhone case site that requires Flash) with some videos, and rather than put together images of how great the cases work or how good they look, the ad people decided to just jump right into the deep end of the insane pool.
As you can see above, the first concept involves some kind of mystical girl in the mountains who can create objects with her mind, and has six arms, and ... well, just watch it for yourself. I already have a case on my iPhone (and it's not a Case-mate, I just use the iSkin Revo), but honestly, I prefer some crazy ads like this to, say, the FaceTime commercials. I can only take that "Baby, it is so short" commercial so many times.
Case-mate tried to tell us that the second commercial they made wasn't quite as nuts, but man, it's even crazier. It's also kind of not-safe-for-work, too (some mild gore and implied nudity), so I'll just link to it by name: Living With Steel Wool Hands (How I Lost My Nipple). No, really. Watch if you dare. I don't know what they're putting in the water over in the marketing department, but maybe they should splurge for bottled.TUAWFound Footage: Case-mate will freak you out with iPhone case commercials originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 00:00:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Casemate - HandheldsПереслать - Safari extension highlight: Facebook Photo ZoomWith the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.
Here's one from the "fun" category. As Facebook overtakes the Internet and our collective consciousness, we're spending more and more time there. How else will I be forced to look at photos of people's kids? Speaking of photos, they're small in the timeline and enlarging them means loading a new page. Who has time for that?
Facebook Photo Zoom solves the problem. Once installed, you can enlarge any photo you find in Facebook simply by mousing over it. What's really nice is that you can turn it on and off without having to open Safari's preferences. At the bottom of any Facebook page you'll see a small button (right next to the chat). Just click it to enable or disable the extension.
Now go and enjoy large photos on Facebook while saving yourself precious seconds.TUAWSafari extension highlight: Facebook Photo Zoom originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Safari - Facebook - Apple - Facebook PhotoZoomПереслать - Android sales worldwide pass iPhone totals for Q2 2010
Gartner is reporting that worldwide sales of mobile phones running Android OS have surpassed iPhone sales for the second quarter of 2010. 10.6 million phones running the Android OS shipped during the last quarter, representing a 17.2% 2010 market share, compared to 8.74 million iOS phones, representing a 14.2% 2010 market share. The two top dogs are still Symbian, with 41.2% of the market and RIM with 18.2% of the market.
Google's cheerleaders may cry foul, but to be fair to Apple, during the quarter they shipped exactly 3 phone models with iOS on them while carriers shipped over 20 different models of Android phones. We could also mention that a true Apples-to-apples comparison would include the non-phone iOS devices (the iPod touch and iPad) which continue to expand the iOS installed base at a furious pace.
Also, Apple was dealing with a transition to iPhone 4, which lead to constraint issues with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. As Gartner pointed out in its report, "Apple's sales would have been higher if it had not had to face tight inventory management in preparation for the arrival of the iPhone 4 at the end of the second quarter of 2010. Apple also suffered from some supply constraint on the new device. We expect that a wider global roll out of iPhone 4 will sustain Apple's sales momentum throughout the second half of 2010."
Will the rest of 2010 be the Revenge of the iOS? The fact that the iPhone 4 is still sold out at over half of Apple's US retail stores is a big check mark in the "yes" column. Whichever way this goes, it looks like one thing is certain -- RIM is virtually sure to lose its second place position next quarter as both Android and iOS phones increase in popularity and market saturation.TUAWAndroid sales worldwide pass iPhone totals for Q2 2010 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 19:00:00 EST. IPhone - Apple - Android - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Research In MotionПереслать - Jumsoft offering 50% off Money for Cha-Ching customers
Yesterday, we posted that Intuit was basically discontinuing Cha-Ching after hiring the developers and purchasing the app, and it was a little disappointing that they weren't offering any upgrade plan. While Mint.com is free (and some of the Cha-Ching know-how was going to go into the Mint.com iPhone app), it'd be nice to at least get a discount on Quicken or something like that for current users. Fortunately, competitor Jumsoft is stepping up into the void -- they're offering 50% off of their Money app for OS X to current Cha-Ching customers. Usually, the app is $40, but if you submit proof of a Cha-Ching purchase (as I said yesterday, Cha-Ching was included in a MacHeist bundle a while back), they'll give you half off until September 30th.
Jumsoft also has a free iPhone or iPad app of their own to sync with. So if you need a new financial app because Intuit has left you high and dry, this sounds like a great deal. Of course, Cha-Ching isn't going to stop working just because it's not for sale, but going forward, it will eventually need to be updated along with OS X, so if you depend on it as a financial app, you might have to look at switching over. QuakeCon is going down this weekend inAustinDallas, Texas -- the annual celebration of everything id Software (makers of Quake and Doom, among a few other classic PC titles) features tournaments and panels on some of the hottest PC games around. But there's already been one big Apple announcement: John Carmack has demonstrated id's newest game, Rage, running at a full 60 frames per second on the iPhone.
We first heard of this game at QuakeCon a couple of years ago, and Carmack has always said that making sure it ran on the Mac would be a priority, but it looks like he's delivered the goods. The demo was run on an iPhone 4, but Carmack said it worked great on the iPad as well. Carmack said the iPhone version would be out sometime this year, before the full version of Rage arrives on consoles and PC.
Oh, and icing on the cake? All of id's iPhone titles are on sale during the show this weekend -- Doom II RPG is down to just 99 cents, along with Wolfenstein 3D. Doom Classic and Doom Resurrection are US $1.99, down from the usual price of $6.99. If you're inAustinDallas, don't forget that QuakeCon is free and open to the public as well. Apple authorized reseller PowerMax has been in business for nearly 20 years, supplying Apple users with all sorts of goodies from new and used Macs to accessories. This week they've announced their iDevice trade-in program that will accept your older iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
To take part, fill out the appropriate form for your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. You'll supply information like model, storage capacity, condition and any included accessories. Since PowerMax will pay participants in the form of store credit (which can be applied towards anything they sell), they can offer more than businesses dedicated to the resale of iDevices alone.
Once you've described your item, you'll be given shipping instructions. Send it off and the PowerMax team will inspect it upon arrival and if everything is kosher, release your credit. PowerMax has been accepting Macs this way for years, and has a loyal following because of it.
Before you sell your iPhone, you might want to check out our guide for getting it ready and out the door properly. Good luck to PowerMax with their new service.

iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - IPod TouchПереслать - Celebrate the launch of Cannon Cadets with XMG Studio and TUAW
When you're tired of flinging birds at pigs, here's a new way to have fun -- an addictive game called Cannon Cadets (US$1.99) from XMG Studio.
I was fortunate enough to get a preview of Cannon Cadets a few weeks ago, and quickly jumped into the fun. The back story of Cannon Cadets is that there's a very unhappy monkey by the name of Gordo who seeks to remove fun from the universe with his army of evil robots. Your mission is to use your cannon to launch your characters -- RocketBoy, RocketGirl, Pop, Granati and Beats -- at the robots, structures, and flying targets to try to knock out the robot army and finish a level. There are 80 levels on four different planets (not including hidden levels) to work your way through, all of which are challenging and fun to look at.
The game physics are a lot of fun -- there are objects in higher levels that are more like Rube Goldberg devices than just knock 'em down structures, with spinning and swinging bits that are a delight to work with. The sound effects are musical and crazy (yes, those two adjectives do work together in this game), and the graphics really pop on the iPhone 4 Retina Display. You need to work your way through one level to unlock the next level, or if you're impatient, you can spend $0.99 on an in-app purchase that will automatically unlock all levels.
What will delight some players and irritate others is that there is no scoring in Cannon Cadets. You basically work your way through the levels, and if you're unsuccessful, you try again. There are some levels further on in the game that are just so much fun to defeat that you'll find yourself playing them again just to watch the game in action. If you'd like to win a copy of the game or a specially-designed Cannon Cadets / TUAW skin for your iDevice, read on.

Marketcircle has confirmed that Daylite will be coming to the iPad. I've been using Daylite and Daylite Touch for years (here's our initial look at Daylite Touch). It's a terrific productivity suite that keeps me on task and working (plus it looks great). Daylite Touch syncs with the Daylite server I've got happily running on an old G4 iMac. As I said, I love it, but I've also been wondering if and when it'll move over to the iPad.
Work has begun on the app and they intend to have parity with the current version of Daylite Touch, so synchronization and licensing will be the same. I'm most eager to see how it makes use of the iPad's larger screen. The calendar in the screenshot at right looks great and so much roomier than the iPhone version.
Good luck to the Marketcircle team. We're eager to see what you make.TUAWDaylite coming to the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 14:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

While iOS 4 is a significant upgrade to Apple's multi-touch operating system, it is not without its quirks. And one of these quirks (an extremely annoying one) is the Nike+ app. Simply put, the app is so buggy that it is almost unusable (the operative word here being "almost," since it takes a lot of fiddling around to get it to work correctly).
A search for "Nike+ iOS 4" on the Apple and Nike support forums and Google will produce a smorgasbord of user complaints. I'll address some of those here and offer some possible remedies.

Nike - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Google - Apple - Operating systemПереслать - Chaos Rings comes to iPad - all Square Enix games on sale
Released back in April, Chaos Rings for the iPhone became a runaway hit and a top seller soon after its debut on the App Store. Reviewers praised the title from Square Enix, and many of them felt that the US$12.99 iPhone title could easily have been a successful game on the Nintendo DS or Sony's PSP at more than twice the price.
Square Enix promised that the game would be coming to the iPad, and it has delivered on that promise. Chaos Rings for iPad has just debuted and is now available for $15.99 on the US App Store. As far as we can tell from the screen shots, it's essentially the same game as the iPhone version, but the resolution is bumped up to the iPad's 1024 x 768, which allows for crisper details and a less cramped UI.
To celebrate the launch of Chaos Rings for iPad, Square Enix has reduced the price of all of its App Store games for the next two weeks. Chaos Rings for iPhone, for example, has gone from $12.99 to $9.99. Final Fantasy I has gone from US$8.99 to $6.99, and Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes has been deeply discounted from US$9.99 to $4.99. Square Enix's games tend to be higher-priced than most others on the App Store (and deservedly so, given the quality of its titles), so if you've been holding off on checking out some of these titles because of pricing, now's the time to jump in.TUAWChaos Rings comes to iPad - all Square Enix games on sale originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST. Square Enix - IPhone - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Nintendo DSПереслать - Mac 101: Five tips for working with PDF files in Mac OS X
One of the best things about Mac OS X is its built-in support for PDF files. Instead of testing your sanity while you wait (sometimes it can seem like forever) for Adobe Acrobat to open a PDF file, you can use Preview.app to open them up quickly. However, built-in PDF support allows you to do other neat things as well. Here are five of my favorites.
Print
At the top of the list is the ability to create a PDF from almost any document. Whether it's a Word or Pages document, a spreadsheet, or a Web page, in most instances you'll be able to create PDFs out of them. Many Windows users print to a PDF printer in order to create a PDF file, and in a similar manner, creating PDFs on Mac OS X involves selecting the print option from the app that you're working in. Within the app, click on "File" and then select "Print." Then, you'll be presented with a dialog box with a "PDF" button on the left. Click on this button and select "Save as PDF."Annotate
Once you've created your PDF, you can annotate it. Open up your PDF in Preview.app, click on "View," and select "Show Annotations Toolbar." After doing so, a toolbar will appear on the bottom left of your document. Alternatively, the toolbar will also be displayed if you select any of the annotate options under the "Tools" menu. Annotations include the ability to create text boxes (useful for filling out forms), add notes, or highlight and create shapes (among other things).Rearrange
You can also move pages around within Preview.app (like rearranging the songs in an iTunes playlist). Simply choose "Contact sheet" or "Thumbnail" view from the sidebar, and then drag and drop your pages as you see fit.Bookmarks
Let's say that a couple of pages within a PDF interest you, and you want to revisit them later. To do this, click on "Bookmarks" in Preview.app and select "Add Bookmark" (or use the Cmd+D shortcut). One of the neat things about this feature is that, even if your PDF isn't open, you can still access your bookmarks.Crop
I've made no secret about my fondness of Preview.app's image editing ability, and this extends to PDFs as well. One neat image editing feature for PDFs is the ability to select an area and create a new image based on this selection. To do this in the PDF, click on the "Select" tool, select an area, and copy it. Then, in Preview.app, click on "File," select "New from clipboard," and voila, your selection is in a new document. This document can be saved in a variety of formats, including PDF, JPG, and PNG.PDF parsing and rendering are core features of Mac OS X and iOS. While providing for native support for PDF files, it also served as the foundation for the recently released Web-based jailbreak for the iPhone.

This is great! Photographer Jordan Hollender and musician Scott Harris put together this music video that covers Survivor's classic anthem and uses only iPad apps as instruments. The video itself was recorded with a couple of Canon HDSLR video cameras, but as you can see in the embedded version above, all of the music is created with iPad apps. Unfortunately, they don't identify the apps used, but that sounds like a great job for you TUAW commenters. I think I saw Pianolo HD being played on the floor there, and Pocket Drums is being used as percussion, but I couldn't find the guitar app or the DJ app that they are using.
Of course, what I really want to know is where he got that sweet lightning bolt iPad strap. The video's great, though. Apparently it was all lit in one day and shot in another. There's no word on how long it took to make the song, but with the iPad involved, it was probably both magical and revolutionary.

We've covered the issue tangentially before, but in case our guides on EPUB and the process itself haven't been enough to inspire you would-be authors to self-publish your book in iBooks, Greg Mills has a step-by-step guide just for you. Of course, the hardest part may be actually writing the book, but once you've gotten that out of the way, you're just a format check, a registration, and an upload away from becoming an e-published author.
It's really not complicated, and while there are a few hoops to jump through (you need to make sure that your files match up exactly to the store's format, and then, of course, you need to let Apple know that you're legit and responsible), Mills' steps make the process almost completely transparent. The toughest part (besides the technical tweaking and forms to fill out) might be going through the ISBN application process, but even that's just standard bureaucracy.
It's pretty amazing that with just a standard Mac, a little patience, and the right information, almost anybody can publish on Apple's iBooks store. Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Macintosh - IBook - EPUBПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Solipskier
Solipskier is kind of a mix of the growing line drawing genre and the classic Line Rider game. A little headphone wearing skier (at least he wears headphones as long as he can keep them on) travels along a snow ridge that you actually draw with your finger as you play the game; he speeds up or slows down based on the slope that you trace out with your finger. The gameplay is simple to pick up, but it turns out to be pretty deep. You can draw quick ramps to make him jump, or you can draw sliding slopes that really send the guy moving along through all of the gates, tunnels, and jumps that get placed in your path.
There's a really great pick-up-and-play vibe to the title, and it's fun enough to keep you coming back again and again. If you don't believe me, give it a shot online right now for free. If you enjoy it enough to spend the money, you can grab a universal version on the App Store for just US $2.99.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Solipskier originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 08:00:00 EST. From the "It Was Only a Matter of Time Department" comes news that Camera+, the top-rated photography app from developer tap tap tap, has been pulled from the App Store, most likely for violating Apple's developer agreement. Apple previously rejected an update to the Camera+ app which would have allowed users to use one of the iPhone's volume buttons as a mechanical shutter button while using Camera+. This is a feature many iPhone photographers have wished for -- tapping the screen to take a picture is far less stable than pressing a physical button -- but Apple cited "user confusion" in rejecting the Camera+ update which included the feature.
tap tap tap posted (and later deleted) instructions on Twitter that allowed users to enable the "volume button as shutter" functionality via a back door workaround. This is most likely what got Camera+ kicked off the App Store; other apps with "hidden features" or "easter eggs" like this have been banished from the App Store before, like a flashlight app that allowed users to stealthily enable internet tethering.
Apple's well within its rights to react in this manner when developers put "hidden" features in their apps. On the other side of the mobile pond, Android users are currently getting hit by a trojan posing as a media player app which then sends unauthorized SMS messages to premium-rate numbers. While Apple's "user confusion" excuse for not letting Camera+ use the volume buttons as a shutter doesn't necessarily fly (how often are you going to mess with the iPhone's volume while taking a picture?), tap tap tap's "workaround" was out of line, at least in principle -- if Apple's not going to let a flashlight app secretly enable internet tethering or allow apps with blatant malware on the App Store, then it shouldn't come as a surprise that "hidden" functionality, however innocuous, will get your app banished.
Hopefully this ban is only temporary until Camera+ gets updated without the "workaround" in place -- or, better still, Apple could recognize that many users have triple-digit IQs and stop citing "user confusion" as an excuse for denying useful functionality. Either way, I hope Camera+ comes back eventually.TUAWCamera+ pulled from App Store for 'volume button as camera shutter' workaround originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 03:00:00 EST. There's nothing like walking around in the middle of the night and stepping on the knob of a wooden puzzle piece. It kind of hurts. Believe me, it's happened to me on many an occasion, and it has resulted in firetruck and dinosaur-like imprints on my feet.
If you're tired of stepping on puzzle pieces, having puzzle pieces go missing -- and if your toddler is tired of doing the same puzzles over and over -- you may want to consider some puzzle alternatives on the App Store.
While I'm obviously too old to be doing wooden knob puzzles, my 18-month-old nephew isn't. So, these observations are based, in part, on his interactions with the apps and a sit-down we had over a bottle of milk to discuss them.

Last weekend I reported on some apparently widespread problems with the AT&T Microcell, particularly in regard to the iPhone 4. The AT&T and Apple support boards are still filled with comments from irate customers who can barely hear the people calling them because the audio is breaking up unless you are right next to the MicroCell device.
I called in my trouble report to AT&T a few days ago, and today I was surprised to hear from a tech support person. She asked if I had used the MicroCell lately, and I said I hadn't because it was pretty much useless. She told me in the last couple of days a 'script' had been sent to my unit, and asked me to try again. Since she called me on my iPhone I walked around the house, and quite a distance out in the yard to test it. The call was fine. I've used my iPhone several times today, all with good results.
I can't say it is a permanent fix, but whatever they did, it has worked for me so far. If you've had MicroCell problems I'd strongly suggest you file a trouble report, and if you have, be sure to follow up with AT&T. The tech support number that deals with MicroCell issues is 877-998-5175. Ask them to download the mysterious 'script' to your MicroCell and hope for the best.
I had thought this was completely an iPhone 4 issue, but the tech I talked to said there are issues on some other phones as well. The jury is still out on whether this is a real solution, but at least in my case I haven't heard any bad audio since AT&T downloaded the fix to my MicroCell.

IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AT&T - Apple - MicroCellПереслать - Intuit buys Cha-Ching after hiring developers
We've been pretty big fans of Cha-Ching, both the OS X app and the iOS version, over the years. Turns out Intuit liked the app a lot, too -- the financial juggernaut has acquired Cha-Ching and its code after hiring the app's developers a little while back. The website currently points to both Quicken for Mac and Mint.com, so presumably this is the end of the app -- its functionality will be brought into Intuit's other properties, used to smooth out Quicken for Windows, while Cha-Ching Touch's functionality will eventually show up in the Mint.com iPhone app.
Too bad for users of the app currently -- I know the app was sold in at least one MacHeist sale, so it's definitely out there and fairly popular. There's no word on any upgrades at all. The Mint.com app is great (and free), but of course Quicken is $50 just to get started. Intuit - IPhone - Apple - Quicken - Mint.comПереслать - Engadget: Apple TV gets apps, new name in iTV
Our friends at Engadget have heard from a trusted source that Apple is indeed remaking the Apple TV, as was previously guessed based on its past trajectory. But the final product may surprise you: it won't have 1080p output, according to Engadget (which refutes earlier rumors), but it will keep that US$99 price, and bring apps from the App Store to the table.
It's not yet known whether it will simply use iPhone or iPad apps (or get a brand new entry of its own), but Engadget says some connection to both the App Store and streaming services is going to happen. Internally, the box is supposed to be comparable to the hardware found in an iPhone 4, including one of Apple's own A4 chips running the show.
And with all of these other changes, the device is reportedly getting a new name, the iTV. That makes a lot of sense, actually -- not only does it distinguish this new unit from the "AppleTV" hobby, but it brings the device in line with the iPhone, iPad, and Apple's other iOS devices. Engadget also notes that the iTV isn't a new name so much as it is a return to the old one, so if all of this turns out to be true, it would seem like Apple has a much more directed strategy for its set-top box this time around.
Engadget says we'll see all revealed by sometime this Fall. It all sounds very interesting -- if Apple can squeeze all of that into a box that costs only $99, who wouldn't plug that into their television?
Note: Over at The Loop, Peter Cohen points out that the existing Apple TV is a 720p-native device, so the hypothetical 1080p support that this hypothetical future iTV might or might not have sported... well, it's all hypothetical until the hardware hits the Apple Store.TUAWEngadget: Apple TV gets apps, new name in iTV originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 17:30:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - UstreamПереслать - iPhone Post It Notes take your Apple love analog
Here's a useful tool for developers who want to sketch out UI ideas for iPhone apps. These clever Post-It Notes from Apps-on and 3M have a 20 pixel grid on the drawing surface, and feature the exact dimensions of the iPhone 4. So, you can draw your ideas in a perfect 1:1 scale. There are 50 sheets per pad, so don't be afraid to toss bad ideas into the trash.
They're available in three packs: the Starter offers 5 pads for US$20, the Pro offers 10 for $35 and finally you can get 20 pads for $59 by choosing the Master pack. Heck, I'm not a developer but I'd use them as plain old Post-Its!
This isn't the first example of this type of thing that we've seen. Notepod+ is a similar sketchpad aimed at iPad developers, and the folks at Design Commission have produced a stencil that lets you add all sorts of UI elements to your sketches. If any of these suit your fancy, have at it and get sketching!

IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - HandheldsПереслать - iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone/iPod touch, iOS 3.2.2 updates available now
Within the last few minutes, iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, and iPod touch 2nd and 3rd generation (late 2009 models with 32 or 64 GB) has become available for download. In addition, the iPad has received an update to iOS 3.2.2.
The updates fix a security vulnerability that was associated with viewing malicious PDF files. It doesn't appear that there are any fixes to any other issues (i.e., the proximity sensor glitch), but the fix to the PDF exploit insures that the iOS platform remains secure.
For a security fix, the update is huge -- the iPhone update is 580MB in size and the iPad update is 457MB. For a look at more detailed information about what the updates patch, check out the iOS 4.0.2 Update description and the iOS 3.2.2 Update description on Apple's website.TUAWiOS 4.0.2 for iPhone/iPod touch, iOS 3.2.2 updates available now originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 15:40:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPod Touch - IPadПереслать - Apple starts iPod nano swap program in Japan
Back in 2008, the Japanese Trade Ministry identified 3 reports of fires that were caused by overheating iPod nanos. An investigation followed and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry found a total of 34 incidents of overheating that could be attributed to the lithium-ion battery used in those nanos. Issues ranged from discoloration to, in rare instances, fires. As a result, Apple agreed to replace defective units in Japan. That program went into effect this week.
Anyone who bought a first-generation iPod nano between September 2005 and September 2006 in Japan can get it replaced if it overheats. Note that only the original nano was affected. If you've got one of these units, head on down to an Apple Store or follow the instructions here. Good luck.

With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.
Many of Google's Web apps have been long on functionality but short on looks. Google Reader, the Web-based RSS reader, is a good example of this. Fortunately, Google Reader Mac OS X Snow Leopard + Delicious is a Safari extension that makes Reader look good.
Once installed, this extension makes Google Reader resemble a Snow Leopard application (like iTunes). The sidebar is that same faint blue, and the rest is white and gray. Additionally, dialog boxes are the same nearly-transparent black that we've come to expect from Snow Leopard.
This extension is simply a new set of clothes for Google Reader, so its functioning is unchanged. There, now doesn't that look better?TUAWSafari extensions highlight: A good-looking Google Reader originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. GoogleReader - Google - RSS - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppleПереслать - iPhone body armor case looks cool
Speaking of iPhone cases that look ... different, here's an interesting metal case for everybody's favorite smartphone. A company called Ltd Tools has created a metal, cage-style case that adds a flip cover to the phone and gives it a pretty distinctive look. I don't think it will be for everybody; it actually makes the iPhone 4 look kind of like a big RAZR, but I like it. What it lacks in actual protection, it makes up for in some interesting functionality, which includes unimpeded access to the charging port and a cool little rubber band that can hold business or credit cards.
There is a warning that a metal case can "affect reception," but it can't be that much worse than what you're getting already. And OK, sure, the case is US$95, which is a bit much to pay for a case like this (although it does look pretty well-machined). But I just like the look of it anyway. A great many cases tend to make the phone look like a colored lump, so it's neat to see a case that adds a little something to the iPhone's design.

iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Smartphone - Apple - BusinessПереслать - OkCupid: iPhone users have more sex
I've been a huge fan of social dating site OkCupid's OkTrends blog for a while now. They're constantly sharing data (anonymized, of course) from their social site about what people find attractive and interesting in each other. The latest post has some fun information about cameras -- specifically, the perceived link between what type of camera OkCupid's patrons use and successful relationships. All of the data is fascinating (as usual), but there's one little note of potential interest to iPhone fans.
Apparently, when compared to users who post pictures from other smartphone brands, users who reported using iPhones for their profile pictures tend to identify more sexual partners over all. As you can see in the chart above, male and female iPhone users (at age 30) report higher numbers of sexual partners to OkCupid.
In fact, across all ages, iPhone users reported having more sexual partners than those who used Android or Blackberry smartphones to take their profile pictures. Of course, OkCupid is just having fun here. Maybe iPhone users are actually more inclined to lie about their amorous conquests, or maybe there's a higher likelihood that Android or Blackberry users have reason to report a lower number.
But then again, we already know that iPhone owners tend to be rich, engage in vigorous activity, and like to be outspoken about their buying choices and preferences. And aren't those the kind of people who end up going home with the girl (or guy) from the bar anyway?TUAWOkCupid: iPhone users have more sex originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. Blackberry - Smartphone - Android - OkCupid - IPhoneПереслать - Apple patents "Exciter" technology for devices, including a "cyclocomputer"
Patently Apple has news of a new patent filed by Apple for a technology that it calls the Exciter. At present, wirelessly trading information between iPhones can be a bit of a hassle, since both phones have to find each other and then sync up. But the "Exciter" technology would simply keep an eye out for another phone that's willing to share information, and then when a certain signal is detected (it could be light-based, sound-based, or any other type of emitted information), the two devices would share information (contacts, calendar information, photos, or text) as necessary.
It's an interesting idea, but the application is even more interesting. Along with the usual suspects for possible Apple devices that would use this app or technology, Apple has listed a "cyclocomputer," which is yet another hint that Apple is working on some kind of bike-related mobile device. In this case, two bikers would pass each other, their devices would recognize that there is a device to share information with, and the exchange would take place.
It sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, as with all of these patents, Apple is just locking down any ideas that it has. Just because this technology is outlined and listed in a patent application doesn't mean that there's a project right around the corner; it doesn't guarantee that we'll definitely see this product. But as always, it's fascinating to see where Apple's thinking is going. The company that originally released the Mac has now become the world's biggest portable device company, and it certainly seems like it plans to continue moving in that direction.TUAWApple patents "Exciter" technology for devices, including a "cyclocomputer" originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST.
