- G-Fi puts GPS on your first gen iPhone or iPod touch, at quite a cost
Filed under: Accessories, Hardware, Odds and ends, iPhone
I love my iPhone, but I have to say that there is one little thing wrong with it: it's a first generation. That means that I can't quite play all of the games, or record video, or do all of the cool GPS things you kids can do nowadays. It's not a really bad thing -- I can still do a good 99% of the things that a 3GS can do, and I get plenty of usage out of mine anyway -- but it is kind of a pain waiting for my Google maps to update over Edge, or not having turn-by-turn directions when I want them.
Fortunately, there are already ways to get GPS going on my 1st gen, and here's another one. The G-Fi is a little box that will add GPS to your first generation iPhone or iPod touch. Unfortunately, this one is probably a little too hardcore for me -- it creates a mobile wireless point that will spin out GPS locations to any number of devices in the area, up to 200 total. The catch: it requires a specific app called Navmii, selling in the App Store now for $33. That's in addition to the little box itself, which is $100.
Unfortunately, while this might work for a large number of roaming devices, it's way more than I need. A single unit add-on like the Magellan kit works with any app that uses GPS and will probably cost less, too. But if this one floats your boat (maybe you have a fleet of bounty hunters rocking 1st gen iPhones who need GPS to track down crooks together?), you can pick it up right now.TUAWG-Fi puts GPS on your first gen iPhone or iPod touch, at quite a cost originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 16 Jan 2010 13:00:00 EST. iPhone - App Store - Apple - IPod Touch - GoogleПереслать - Found Footage: MyNature Animal Tracks
Filed under: Video, iPhone, App Store, iPod touch
I live in a suburban area south of Denver, Colorado, but that doesn't mean that I don't see animal tracks regularly. Quite the contrary -- our area is occasionally visited by mountain lion and black bear, there are herds of elk and white-tailed deer that frequent the area, and it's not unusual to see red fox and coyote loping through the neighborhood. Hiking in the foothills near my home is a sure way to see a variety of animal tracks
MyNature, Inc. recently released MyNature Animal Tracks [US$6.99, iTunes Link] to help nature lovers easily identify 43 different species of North American animals. The video above shows the depth of the application, which includes:- A searchable database on track size and shape featuring 7 search categories.
- Clear track drawings showing both fore and hind prints.
- Images of each animal's common gait and other gait patterns they may use.
- Photos of an actual track of each animal in the wild.
- Range maps for each species
- Sound files of each animal's vocalizations.
- An image of what the animal looks like in it's natural environment.
- A ruler to measure and aid in track identification.
- MyNature journal, for recording personal notes
- Tips on finding tracks, plaster casting and much more.

App Store - iPhone - Apple - IpodTouch - iTunesПереслать - Flickr (err, Etsy) Find: Iron Mac
Filed under: Hardware, Humor, Portables, Apple, Macbook Pro, MacBook
Ok, so usually our Flickr Find feature is about photographic stuff, but this was so cool I had to share it anyway. Gizmodo (via SlashFilm) found this awesome MacBook sticker over on Etsy, and I think, though the Newton one is still cool, that we have a new winner for coolest MacBook sticker ever. Unfortunately, it's sold out, but I just love the way the logo is used in a pretty awesomely defiant B&W portrait of Iron Man.
In other sticker news, Cult of Mac says the Steve Jobs sticker they found is probably the best one ever, but the funny Carmen Miranda mod on that page is excellent, too. I wouldn't normally just put stickers on my laptop -- it's too good looking already to muddy up with other graphics. But this Iron Mac sticker would be the sure-fire exception.TUAWFlickr (err, Etsy) Find: Iron Mac originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 16 Jan 2010 10:45:00 EST. Apple - Steve Jobs - TUAW - Macbook Pro - MacintoshПереслать - NY teen arrested after leaving threatening note on screen in Apple Store
Filed under: Retail, Odds and ends
A teen in New York has been arrested for leaving a threatening note on the screen of a computer at an Apple Store. The 17-year-old boy was joking around with friends when he typed a note on screen promising "a bloody death" to anyone working in the store via a "bomb loaded with C4, strapped to my chest." The note was then signed with the name of one of his friends' fathers. He claims he typed it just to be funny, and then forgot to delete it when he left, but the District Attorney in Staten Island says it's no joke -- the kid faces up to seven years in prison.
I can't help but think they'll let him off the hook eventually. Sure, it was a stupid (really stupid) thing to do, and they should come up with a punishment that teaches the kid a lesson, but time in prison labeled as a terrorist seems a little much for showing off to friends in an Apple Store. Maybe they can have him do some in-store lip synching performances as a community service.

Apple - Cult of Mac - TUAW - Staten Island - MacintoshПереслать - Apple scores high on customer experience index, iTunes not so much
Filed under: iTunes, Surveys and Polls, Apple
According to AppleInsider, Apple has scored higher than other PC companies on Forrester's new customer experience survey, but their main software app didn't fare quite as well. Apple came in at number 35 on the list, which places them way above PC competitors like HP, Compaq and Dell, though iTunes only scored place number 46, putting them way behind online media competitors Barnes and Noble (which sat at number one) and Amazon.com (#4).
The survey was driven by asking customers how well their needs were met by the companies on the list, how easy it was to conduct business with them, and how enjoyable the different interactions were. Note that this survey only rates customer interaction -- in terms of actual sales, iTunes is still through the roof. And Apple is still leading the way in customer satisfaction as well. But in terms of actual customer experience, iTunes especially, for something that is quickly becoming Apple's core method of interacting with customers, could probably use a little work.TUAWApple scores high on customer experience index, iTunes not so much originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 15 Jan 2010 16:30:00 EST. Apple - Dell - Amazon.com - Hewlett-Packard - TUAWПереслать - TUAW Tip: Get an instant definition of any word in a pop up window
Filed under: Odds and ends, iWork, TUAW Tips, Snow Leopard
Gee, I love stuff like this, and I wish I would have known about it a long time ago. The tip comes from OSXhelp.com and it's a great one.
Need a quick definition of a word in Safari or an email? Yes, you probably already knew you could right-click on a highlighted word and bring up the OS X dictionary, but how about this? Press Command+Control+D while hovering over any word, and up pops the definition almost immediately. If you continue to hold down those keys you can slide your mouse over any other word and get a definition as well. Let go of the keys, and click somewhere else and the dictionary vanishes.
This little feature doesn't work everywhere. It requires you be in a Cocoa application, like Safari or Mail. It works in Pages, but not in MS Word because it was based on Carbon. Sadly, it doesn't work in Firefox. In fact, you can't right-click in Firefox and get a definition in the 'normal' Apple way.
If you want even more information than the little definition, click on the word 'more' at the lower right of the pop-up, and you'll get a lot more stuff from the Apple dictionary app, including usage suggestions and the origins of the word.
A couple of notes: If you are using a macro program like QuicKeys, make sure you aren't mapping the key combination you need to activate this feature, or re-map it to something else. If you click on the word 'dictionary' you can bring up the thesaurus, and if you launch the Apple dictionary application you can get into preferences and change the order of display, so you get the thesaurus as a default. You can also change your right-click behavior to open the concise panel instead of the larger definition page. Once I memorized the command key sequence I find myself using this all the time. It's quick and dirty. Let us know if you like it.
Thanks to OS X Help for all the little tips they regularly come up with, and to my fellow blogger Erica Sadun for testing this feature with QuicKeys. Sharp eyed readers will note we've covered this tip before here and here but I think it bears repeating.TUAWTUAW Tip: Get an instant definition of any word in a pop up window originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 15 Jan 2010 16:00:00 EST. Safari - Apple - Firefox - TUAW - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Apple flush with cash and ready to buy
Filed under: Rumors, Apple Financial, Steve Jobs, Apple
Got a company you're trying to sell? Apple might have a check with your name on it -- BusinessWorld reports that they're in the mood for picking up some new businesses lately. Even after high profile acquisitions like LaLa and Quattro Wireless, Apple's still got plenty of cash in the bank, and they're looking to buy. BW points to the hire of Adrian Perica, a former Goldman Sachs banker, as the company's "first dedicated M&A specialist," and says that with Perica on board, Apple's looking to get the jump on rivals like Google and pick up some new technology and talent via acquisition.
So what kind of companies will they be picking up? Apple is a company that's always on the move. While the Mac market is strong, they seem to have realized that their main strength lies in breaking new ground, from music players to smartphones, and so they'll likely pick up companies slightly different from their current core products. They also have a history of buying smaller companies, so you probably won't see them do gigantic merger deals. Rather, they'll find a company working on a new tech that interests them, and then just swallow the little firm whole (see Cover Flow and any number of their other pickups in the last decade). So if your ten-person company is working on, say, a revolutionary new tablet control scheme, or a new category of personal computing, that knocking on your door might be Apple with a truckload of money.
