- New Apple touch display patent
Filed under: Hardware, Odds and ends, Apple
Patently Apple has the news that Apple has filed for another touchscreen display patent, but here's the catch: this one's probably not for a tablet! Or at least, not for the tablet we're expecting. The patent, which covers the idea of a thinner and brighter touchscreen display by combining the touch and pixel display elements (basically including the capacitive and pixel elements in the same hardware), could actually be used in any of Apple's devices, from the iPhone and iPod touch, to future versions of their laptops. And yes, it could be used in a potential tablet, but really, this is more of a way to create touchscreens anywhere rather than specifically a tablet-only function.
Note that this is also different from the dynamic tactile display Apple patented a little while ago. Personally, I'd rather see the much more inventive tactile display used in the hopefully soon-to-be-unveiled tablet -- I'd love to finally get some touchable feedback from touchscreens. But of course Apple will use what they think is best. Having a quicker and brighter display to go along with a multitouch screen wouldn't be a bad thing, either.
Thanks, Mitch Wagner!TUAWNew Apple touch display patent originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 22:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Touchscreen - multitouchПереслать - iPhone devsugar: Simple table badges
Filed under: Cool tools, Developer, iPhone, App Store
TUAW's devsugar series helps introduce developers to tools and tricks that they might not yet be familiar with. Today's tip centers on table-level badging and how to simply and easily add badged cells to your iPhone Xcode projects.
Badges are a natural partner for table view cells. When working with one-to-many data like mailboxes with letters, or RSS feeds with articles, they indicate how many items (or new items) branch off of each available choice. The standard Apple SDK does not offer badge functionality.
iPhone Developer Tim Grant Davies to the rescue. He has built an open source github repository for his TDBadgedCell project. Distributed under the Creative Commons Public License, this class allows you to add numbers to the right of each table view cell, and choosing a background color for each number.
Each badge is drawn in a custom view using CoreGraphics. This means the class does not rely on extra images stored in memory, and the badges are drawn quickly on demand. You can set color properties for each badge, indicating hues for both the normal and highlighted states.
When working with cells without accessories -- accessories are a table cell property defined in the official SDK -- the badge is placed into the accessory view. When accessories have been defined, the badge is instead placed conditionally, to the left of of any shown accessory. The screen shot here demonstrates the use of the TDBadgedCell class using a table with disclosure chevron accessories.
The class inherits directly from UITableViewCell, and can be used in its place when providing cells for a table's data source. Simply add the class to your Xcode project and return badged cells instead of standard table view cells. Use setBadgeNumber: to set the badge to an integer value.
Davies developed this class for use in his personal projects but when he found a high demand for these features from many other developers, he decided to re-write the badge cell from scratch. He has provided it as an open source class for all iPhone developers to take advantage of. So if your application could use a some badges for notification, head on over and try it out!TUAWiPhone devsugar: Simple table badges originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 20:30:00 EST. iPhone - App Store - Apple - Open source - TUAWПереслать - Rumors and speculation: No Intel in the tablet, no Flash either
Filed under: Hardware, Odds and ends, iTunes
Scott Moritz over at The Street has new rumors about the tablet today (though be warned, Moritz isn't first in the hearts of Apple crystal-ball gazers): he says that the tablet does not include any Intel chips inside, and that Apple has instead elected to go with another provider for the little pieces of metal, silicon and plastic that will power what many expect to be the new revolution in portable computing. He cites Apple's "design manufacturing partners" as sources, although of course neither Intel nor Apple have anything to say about the subject.
And elsewhere in the tablet rumorscape, John Gruber has a followup to his big tablet speculation post that's worth a read. He says that yes, of course, the App Store will deliver apps to the platform, that yes, there may be an SDK delay (although don't forget, we've already heard about a possible new SDK going around), that yes, the new tablet may offer up non-app iTunes content from indie providers, and finally that no, the tablet probably won't have Flash, for the same reasons that the iPhone doesn't.
Which all sounds legit, though even Gruber admitted in his other post that his theories were based on reasoning more than any secrets he'd heard. We're getting a pretty good picture of the tablet as we go along here -- odds are it'll get even clearer before we see the thing on stage.TUAWRumors and speculation: No Intel in the tablet, no Flash either originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 19:30:00 EST. The face of Steve Jobs is almost as much of an icon as the Apple logo.
Over the years, his photo has appeared on numerous magazine covers. From the 1982 Time cover painting with a "pr0n star" moustache, through the early dalliance with a suit and tie, and to the November, 2009 Fortune magazine CEO of the Decade cover, Jobs has worked his now-grizzled mug onto more magazines than probably any other CEO in history.
Kuo Design's PineApple blog has a collection of many of the Steve Jobs covers on "The Steve Jobs on Magazine Covers page." It's fun to see the changes in Steve over the years, as well as magazines that have since become history. And you can help them put it all together: If you have any old magazines with Steve Jobs on the cover, it appears that Kuo Design is taking contributions to their online repository of Jobsian goodness.TUAWKuo Design: All your Steve Jobs magazine covers are belong to us originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 18:30:00 EST. Steve Jobs - Apple - TUAW - Fortune - HistoryПереслать - Ballmer reveals some 'slate' PCs, but does not thrill
Filed under: Hardware, Multimedia, Portables, Rumors, Odds and ends
There was quite a bit of anticipation that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would upstage Apple with an exciting new tablet design at his CES keynote last night, but it pretty much turned out to be a dud. After more than an hour of bobbing and weaving through several topics, and quickly skipping over Windows Mobile, Ballmer showed a prototype tablet from Hewlett-Packard and two other suppliers. They were running Windows 7 and looked a lot like other touchscreen prototypes we've seen, but none of them seemed to do anything special. You can see the tablet presentation over on YouTube.
What we really saw was Ballmer trying a pre-emptive strike against the probable appearance of an Apple tablet later this month. He even referred to 'slate' PCs, a bit of a swipe against the oft-reported Apple-owned iSlate name. I suppose this is better than Ballmer's 2007 interview where he dissed the iPhone when it launched. He's trying to get ahead of the curve, but his keynote got pretty ho-hum reviews and Microsoft really didn't show anything of interest. There was a buzz that Microsoft might show the Courier device it hinted at in September, but it didn't appear yesterday.
We don't know if Apple will reveal a tablet, although it seems pretty likely. Do you think Apple can trump Microsoft with a tablet and dominate the market as they have with the iPhone against Windows Mobile phones? Or has Microsoft learned their lessons by trying to be a little more pre-emptive with a tablet release?TUAWBallmer reveals some 'slate' PCs, but does not thrill originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 17:30:00 EST. Filed under: Hardware, iPod Family, Multimedia, Odds and ends, Apple, iPhone, Music
CES 2010 is in full swing in Las Vegas, and while we aren't there, we have been able to scour the webs and bring you the latest, the greatest, and the weirdest new Apple-related peripherals and accessories from the show floor.- Griffin has announced a few new devices, including a Display Converter ($40) to send your display out to HDMI or DVI video, a car charger ($30) that opens up another charging spot, and something called the TuneFlex Aux ($60), a cradle that sends iPhone audio out to an AUX port in your car. They've also got new versions of the RoadTrip and iTrip FM transmitters/cradles coming out later this year for the iPhone .
- IvySkin sent word of their Zappack unit, a battery backup for the iPhone available for $50, the SmartCase, a case with an integrated battery pack for $80, and the CardClip, a case for the iPhone with a money/wallet clip attachment for $20.
- Engadget posted a hands-on with Parrot's AR.Drone, which we mentioned yesterday. Short take: it's awesome.
- Geneva Labs has the most beautiful set of iPhone/iPod speaker docks we've seen yet. They're still useless, but they do look good.
- On the other hand there's the Trik / Triq iPod dock (above), a speaker dock so wild that Sony named it twice. Yeah, that is... wow.
- Pioneer announced a car nav unit that will stream Pandora via the cell connection on your iPhone.
- I'm sure there are induction power charging pads aplenty on the show floor, but this is the only one we're bothering to link to.
- Macally has announced another round of accessories, from earbuds to chargers. The most interesting is probably the PowerGo charger, which will use an AC adapter, a car lighter, or a USB plug, so no matter where you are, you can recharge your iPod.

iPhone - Apple - IPod - Sony - Universal Serial BusПереслать - Tablet OS "has a good bit of new sexy to it"
Filed under: OS, Rumors, Odds and ends
Dan Frommer over at The Business Insider had a nice, juicy tidbit to send out to anyone who is interested in Apple tablet rumors: he's apparently heard from someone who has seen the tablet's operating system, but not the actual device.
There were three little quotes from the mysterious source in Frommer's nugget of tablet gold:- It's "pretty" -- obviously.
- "The UI has a good bit of new sexy to it."
- "It's a big iPhone, but it's not just a big iPhone."
What's "difficult to use?" The original CultOfMac post Frommer alluded to was concerned about text entry, and cited Palm's old Graffiti method as something that people had problems with. Even Apple's own Newton MessagePad lost market credibility after its handwriting recognition was widely lampooned by the press. As for the rest of the user interface, it is impossible to imagine that Apple will introduce something that is harder to use than a Mac or iPhone. The "new sexy" could be the key Apple design touch that makes the UI something attractive, functional, and desirable.
Twenty more days... and I'm sure we'll hear at least twenty more rumors.

Apple - Cult of Mac - Newton - tablet - TUAWПереслать - Apple adds 30-second samples to browser-based iTunes previews
Filed under: iTS, Internet, Internet Tools, iTunes
Last November, Apple launched browser-based iTunes previews, which gave customers information on a song or artist before pushing them out to the iTunes Store. It's a handy, welcome change. And now this week, they've added 30-second song samples to those preview pages (check it out). Just as you do in the store, you can hear any track's sample by clicking the small "Play" button that appears when you mouse over its name.
There has been speculation about the future of a streaming-based version of iTunes since Apple bought Lala in November. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that LaLa executives have been given key roles at Apple, and that members of the existing iTunes team will report to them. While playing with the new previews today, we explored the page's source for any hints of Lala, but found nothing. However, we did come across something interesting. Turns out you can easily turn any 30-second preview into an iPhone-compatible ringtone, and you don't even need GarageBand.
First, find a snippet you're interested in. Then view the page's source. Scroll down until you see something that starts:
