- PowerMac panel reused as Nerf backboard
Filed under: Hardware, Humor, PowerMac G5
Cult of Mac comes up with yet another classic re-use of an old Mac: they posted about this PowerMac G5 sidepanel that's been turned into an office space Nerf basketball backboard. The cardboard setup apparently broke down, so they replaced it with this Apple logo-labeled sidepanel from an old PowerMac G5 that had been turned into parts. Beautiful!
Of course you should always recycle any old Macs you aren't using any more, and Apple has an official program set up for just that. But I would rather reuse a computer for something like this: simple, functional, and pretty darn ingenious.TUAWPowerMac panel reused as Nerf backboard originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 19:45:00 EST. Filed under: Cult of Mac, Other Events
With the Apple tablet announcement growing closer by the day, we at TUAW have been putting on our thinking caps trying to brainstorm out exactly what the new device might be called. Of course, since we don't have a clue to base our guesses on (aside from the thin support of domain name registrations), we decided to turn over the decision and brainstorming process to you, the TUAW reader. What do you think the new device will be called? Place your vote in the following poll, and add your guesses to the comments. Let your imagination free -- but do remember we're a family friendly site.

iPhone - Skype - Handhelds - Smartphones - iTunesПереслать - SlipCover helps make case icons for your media
Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Cool tools, Odds and ends, Freeware
Here's a cool app we haven't mentioned yet here on TUAW -- SlipCover is an app that will help you put together some beautiful icons for your Mac's media files, from DVDs to video games or anything else that needs a cool looking icon. The app itself revolves around "case" files, which are basically templates like the Blu-ray, PS3, and Xbox 360 branding on their DVD cases, to which you can then drag and drop other media on to (for example, put a Watchmen movie poster on a Blu-ray "case," and you've got an icon that looks exactly like a Blu-ray version of the DVD), and then your media files on there to apply the icon automatically. No more hunting around through file names or weird previews of your media -- you can just browse through a Delicious Library-style set of thumbnails to find whatever you want to watch.
Now, you may say that you just get all your media from iTunes, and that those come with thumbnails and covers already, and that's a fair point. But for those of us who obtain media from all over the place, it's nice to have a way to make it look all professional and purty. Slipcover is a free download over on their website.

Skype for the iPhone [iTunes link] has been updated to version 1.3. The software gains a landscape mode for instant messaging, the ability to give hints and tips to new users and a call quality monitor.
However, the app still lacks many major features that users want -- including push notification, Bluetooth support and the ability to call out over the AT&T 3G network.
Despite the claim of improved performance and the fix of a call drop issue when returning to a held call, reviewers on the App Store are also noting frequent crashes with this version of the software.TUAWSkype for iPhone adds landscape mode, but lacks push & 3G originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 16:30:00 EST. Filed under: Apple Corporate, Hardware, Apple Financial
Now that suing Apple is practically an Olympic event, Kodak is having a turn. They've filed two actions against Apple and RIM, and a third against Apple only.
The first two claim that Apple and RIM infringe upon Kodak's method of previewing images with the iPhone and Blackberry. The third complaint, pointed at Apple only, addresses processing images at different resolutions. Finally, Apple is also accused of infringements on processes of software programs calling to each other.
What a litigious lot we are. To be fair, Kodak says they're just after fair license terms and don't want any products taken off of the market. We'll watch this story for you.

iPhone - Apple - Eastman Kodak - RIM - Research In MotionПереслать - Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars now available on iPhone and iPod touch
Filed under: Gaming, Software, iPhone, App Store
Rockstar Games told us a while back that they'd be releasing their DS hit Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the iPhone, and sure enough, last night it appeared on the App Store [iTunes link]. Touch Arcade got a head start on the game -- they've got some quick impressions and some gameplay video up on their site right now. The game appears to be a pretty faithful port of the highest-rated Nintendo DS game over on Metacritic, offering up GTA gameplay in a more isometric view that hearkens back to the original games in the series, before GTA III took things fully 3D. The main difference, of course, is that there are no buttons to play with, so you've got to deal with the usual touchscreen controls, and you can now listen to your iTunes playlists along with the in-game radio, but other than that, this is Grand Theft Auto officially on the iPhone. Cool.
We've confirmed with Rockstar that this is an official release (they didn't drop it accidentally, though like Touch Arcade, we expected a little more warning), so you can head on over to the App Store and pick it up for $9.99 right now (half the price of the DS version, in case you thought that was high). We're playing with a copy of the game right now, so you can look for a more in-depth review later this week.TUAWGrand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars now available on iPhone and iPod touch originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 15:15:00 EST. Filed under: Apple Corporate, Hardware, iPhone
Workers at a Wintek Corp factory in China have gone on strike this week, some of them destroying equipment, according to China Daily. Workers are reportedly protesting poor work conditions and alleged deaths from overexposure to toxic chemicals. The chemical in question, hexane, is used for cleaning touch panels. Wintek is the world's largest supplier of touch screens for mobile phones, including Apple's iPhone.
This isn't the first time labor disputes have arisen within Wintek. Last year, protesters gathered at Apple's offices in Taiwan to force Apple into pressuring Wintek to clean up alleged workplace labor and safety violations. Back then, protesters appeared to be using the popularity of Apple's brand name to get attention to their cause. This time things have unfortunately escalated to violence.
There's no immediate word on how the strike will affect Apple's supply of iPhone screens. We're hoping it ends in a manner that's beneficial to everyone.

If you're a fan of Konami-code accessible websites and an iPhone user, you'll be pleased to learn that the Konami Code Sites homepage, which provides a list of enabled sites, is now iPhone compatible. Konami is "standard" for accessing built-in Easter Eggs in video games and web sites. You can now enter your コナミコマンド cheat code via gestures.
As for the Konami-compatible websites listed, they are not as forgiving, I'm afraid. The iPhone compatibility does not extend to any of the listed pages that I tested. Given that we have fully entered the age of iPhone OS (and soon, the tablet), I think you can expect touchKonami to start expanding to ever new sites and applications. For example, Polish Demon's Emojinabler app (currently in App Store review) uses the sequence to unlock Emoji text access on non-Japanese iPhones.

iPhone - AppStore - Apple - Handhelds - SmartphonesПереслать - Zaprudering the invite: Obsessive fun with TUAW
Filed under: Other Events
All the big guys have been receiving their golden tickets this morning. So what can little sites like TUAW do to play along? Why, Zapruder the heck out of the invite of course. Zaprudering, as the SciFicast explains, "is a neologism derived from the Zapruder film, the amateur 8mm film that is the only known visual record of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It's used here to indicate painstaking analysis of the trailer." Zaprudering refers to a detailed extraction of evidence from a limited set of image data.
Dave Caolo noticed that the Apple logo front-and-center, along with the thin (tablet-shaped?) border pointed to a Macbook-like presentation. It would be awesome if the tablet really could mimic and/or replace many laptop features, although all early Humint rumors point to an iPhoneOS-only system.
So what does the art-styled presentation hint at? To most of the team, this seemed a vote for augmented reality interaction a la Excelitech's Virtual Graffiti app [iTunes link]. Maybe we'll be able to interact in new ways with maps and images through a touch-based interface.
Will the target audience differ from the anticipated Kindle crowd? Maybe this touch-based creation will be aimed more at tangible creative media than at simple video and book display? Maybe the rumors about gestures gone wild with a high-powered CPU we've been reading about give a better sense of who Apple is aiming their "latest creation" at.
What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
Update: Commenters point out that the colors used almost perfectly match the current nano line.
Update: TUAW's Megan Lavey adds "I think Apple is announcing the release of its interactive paintball set. It uses the built-in iSight camera. You mad at someone? Click a button on iChat and the paint color of your choice blasts that person in the eye." *hee*TUAWZaprudering the invite: Obsessive fun with TUAW originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 13:15:00 EST. Filed under: Hardware, Rumors, Cult of Mac, Apple
It seems like only hours ago, on the Talkcast, that we were discussing the notable absence of any invitations to Apple's rumored end-of-January event. Where were they? Was all this hype nothing but a smokescreen? When would the word be given, flights booked, liveblogs scheduled and iPhones charged? What were we waiting for?
Who's ready for something insanely great?
Note: As several folks have pointed out, there's another major public event on 1/27, in Washington. Reader Nicholas Lohr offered the bon mot that while the President will be delivering the State of the Union in the evening, Steve Jobs will be giving us the Slate of the Union in the morning. Apple - Cult of Mac - Loop - Unofficial Apple Weblog - MacintoshПереслать - Acrobat.com Mobile now available on the iPhone; free, but expensive
Filed under: Software, iPhone, App Store
Adobe's Acrobat.com website is not only an online collaboration center, but also provides a way to convert files to PDF, meet live over the web, or store and share files.
Now some of that Acrobat.com goodness has found its way into your iPhone. Adobe has released Acrobat.com Mobile by scanR [Free, iTunes Link], which works with an existing Acrobat.com account to give users a way to share and view documents. Users can also fax documents from the app, and iPhone 3GS owners can take photos of documents for addition to their Acrobat.com account.
While the app is free, Acrobat.com Mobile users should be aware that using the app comes with a price tag. While you can scan up to 5 pages or fax 2 pages for free, all additional scanning or faxes must be purchased separately through in-app purchase.
Many early reviews are stating that the app is rather slow and can be expensive once you begin creating or faxing your PDFs, so potential buyers should be aware of those facts. In addition, the app does not support the Web conferencing or online office applications that make the full Acrobat.com so useful to groups.
Acrobat.com appears to be a fair first step towards integrating the iPhone and Acrobat's namesake service, but much more needs to be done before this app reaches its potential.

iPhone - App Store - Apple - iTunes - Adobe SystemsПереслать - Rumor: 22" touch computer coming from Apple
It's Monday, January 18th and we've got more tablet rumors than Tony Romo's got bruises. This time, a report comes from the Chinese publication Commercial Times (via DigiTimes), stating that Apple will launch a 22", touch-enabled all-in-one computer before the year's end.
This rumor amounts to little more than that sentence, but we assume that something that large won't be meant for carrying around. Instead, think of an iMac with a Troll Touch display (above), or something like the HP Touchsmart line. On one hand, it makes sense. If the tablet proves as popular as the iPod touch and iPhone, why wouldn't Apple extend the touch screen to the rest of its lineup?
On the other hand, no one wants to hold their arm in mid-air all day long like this guy. We'll have to keep an eye on this one.
Oh, Apple. Just release the darn thing and make the rumors stop!

Denver-area Mac consultant Mike Kimble is no stranger to Apple; he worked at an Apple reseller prior to the introduction of the Mac in 1984, and he's been involved with Macs and other Apple products ever since. Mike recently found several old Apple tapes that were sent to his business back around the Mac intro, and his description of one of them says it all:
My personal favorite scene is the one where Bill Gates is sitting with a 128K Mac on his desk. The video is divided into two parts; the second can be viewed by clicking the "read more" link below. Enjoy this trip down memory lane!
