- Kevin Rose demos Square payment system for iPhone
Filed under: Hardware, Software, iPhone
Digg's Kevin Rose is the newest investor in this Square iPhone payment system that we've been seeing lately, and as you can see above, he's demo'ed the unit for everyone over on YouTube. It works as we've heard: there's just an addon that you plug into the iPhone's headphone jack, and then an app takes information from the swiper, and transmits it out for an actual credit card payment, with a finger doing the signature. The app, as Kevin says, will even upload GPS information, so you can make sure that payments are happening in the right place.
Unfortunately, what he doesn't mention is the actual price to get payments up and running. Square's website says that there's "no contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs," but they've got to pay for the system somehow, so you'd expect there to be a fee for setup, for the accessory, and then a fee per charge through the system, but we haven't heard what any of those will end up being yet.
Depending on how steep they are, this could be a gamechanger -- accepting payments anywhere, any time, with an online record and receipt for each one, no cash involved. Would be incredible for small business owners, and probably a lot of other sales folks, too.TUAWKevin Rose demos Square payment system for iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 17:30:00 EST. IPhone - Kevin Rose - YouTube - Apple - Credit cardПереслать - Psystar files one more appeal in court
Filed under: Hardware, Software, Odds and ends, Apple, Developer
They're like cockroaches! Psystar is back yet again, this time filing yet another appeal against yet another injunction by Apple telling them that they can no longer sell their unauthorized OS X PCs. As previously reported, they've been on Apple's bad legal side for a long time, and the last injunction had them down to selling t-shirts. Now, they've got only one copy left of their Rebel EFI product, and it's in the hands of the lawyers trying to keep the case open. Just as they promised, they're filing one more appeal against the far-reaching injunction to try and keep the case open...
I'm as big a fan of Psystar as the next guy, and despite their complete and total losses in court, I almost want to see them keep going in a car-crash sort of way. But at this point, it's pointless -- Apple has won in every conceivable way, and Psystar is just wasting their own money and the courts' time by carrying on. It's their right to do so, of course, but this likely means that the next judge to look at the case will just lay the smack down that much harder.

Filed under: Accessories, Audio, Bluetooth, iPhone
Jawbone has a new, feature rich Bluetooth headset called the ICON that is a nice match for the iPhone. New to this headset is a battery meter that displays on the iPhone, something the Apple Bluetooth headset also did. The Apple headset was quietly discontinued last spring after disappointing sales and reviews.
The ICON lets you set custom tones and multiple voices to alert you to incoming calls, and a feature called MyTALK that allows you to control mini-apps that change the voices or language (Spanish, French, or German) and allows you to customize a button to call 411 or connect to other voice services.
The newest Jawbone has also switched from the old proprietary power connector to a mini-USB cable, which is very welcome. The headset also claims to further reduce background and wind noise.
The headset now comes in 6 color designs, including variations of black, gold, pearl and black laced with red.
The newest addition to the Jawbone line is U.S. $100.00. Even though the new headset has iPhone-friendly features, it's available today at Verizon dealers, with other retailers to follow.TUAWJawbone brings new, very iPhone friendly headset to market originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 16:30:00 EST. Vodafone UK, who brought 20 of its dealers with it when the company joined the ranks of iPhone sellers in the UK, says that it's on track to have an additional 20 of its dealers selling the iPhone by the end of May.
MobileNews reports that originally Vodafone had submitted all of its 25 premier partners and most of their gold partners to Apple for approval to sell the iPhone. The article gives insight into what is required of the partners in order to sell the iPhone including:
- Submitting a business plan to the parent company that has to be approved by Apple
- Be properly trained and accredited
- All staff members must own an iPhone

iPhone - Apple - Vodafone - MacDailyNews - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Boy Genius: Multitasking, new interface in iPhone 4.0
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Hardware, Rumors
The folks at Boy Genius Report (BGR) have been speaking with a little birdie from Cupertino again, and this time it's allegedly spilled details on iPhone 4.0.
If the source is to be believed, this update will bring multitasking and a new interface. First, there will be "A few new ways" to run applications in the background, which means multitasking -- something developers and users have wanted for a long time. Also, multi-touch gestures "...will be OS-wide," which makes sense if we're to believe that the tablet OS is preventing the iPhone OS release.
Other rumor nuggets include improved navigation (which was on our list of requests) and improved syncing for contacts and calendar apps. Finally, the update will be limited to the iPhone 3G and 3GS (we assume this also includes the iPod touch), and will "...make them more like full-fledged computers."
Now, we know that a single iPhone OS release may offer platform-specific features. For example, VoiceOver and Accessibility, as well as hardware features like Magnetometers, are not available on iPhones earlier than the 3GS. For that reason, we're unconvinced that the anticipated "Multitouch Revolution" expected for the tablet device will extend in all of its glory to the iPhone. In other words ...
Is it the 27th yet?

Filed under: Other Events, Apple Financial, One More Thing
The news that Apple is going to announce something on January 27th has the stock market in a tizzy. At one point this morning, Apple shares were up to $214.16, up $8.23 or about 4.0%.
Apple set a 52-week high with a share price of $215.59 on January 5, 2010, up 275.6% over the 52-week low set on January 20, 2009.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, by comparison, was up only .95% shortly after 1 PM ET today, and the NASDAQ index was up about 1.17%.
It should be noted that Apple share prices traditionally fall after an announcement, but it will be fascinating to see if AAPL is able to hit a new high prior to the January 27th event.

Apple - NASDAQ - Dow Jones Industrial Average - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AAPLПереслать - Buy software, aid Haiti relief efforts
Filed under: Software, Developer
Last week we pointed out the American Red Cross donation page that's been added to the iTunes Store. This week, several independent Mac/iPhone software (and hardware) developers have come together to aid the relief efforts.
Check out Indie+Relief, a site listing a huge number of applications for you to buy. All proceeds from purchases made on January 20, 2010 will go to emergency workers in Haiti. Who receives the money? That depends on the app. For example, purchase Acorn and Flying Meat will donate $49.95 to Doctors Without Borders. Buy MarsEdit 2 and Red Sweater will make a donation to Partners in Health. It's a great way to go and starts tomorrow.
I asked Marketcircle's Ryan Cash about his company's participation. "Billings has been in the spotlight this month - Billings Mac is featured on the Apple Downloads homepage, and we're also featured in the iTunes App Store under 'New and Noteworthy'. All proceeds from Billings Mac sales on Jan. 20th will be donated to the Doctors Without Borders charity. With Billings in the spotlight we're thinking tomorrow will be a great success."
In related news, a team of developers calling themselves Mobile Applications for Crisis Response have come together to develop just that -- iPhone apps that will aid emergency personnel as they do their jobs. There are four developers on the team now, and the wiki lists the projects they're currently working on. If you'd like to donate your skills to their efforts, please let them know.TUAWBuy software, aid Haiti relief efforts originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 12:30:00 EST. IPhone - Apple - American Red Cross - iTunes - HaitiПереслать - New iLife, iPhone OS 4.0, and tablet next week?
Filed under: Rumors, Apple, One More Thing
Almost everybody who a) cares about Apple and b) is breathing knows already that Apple has an event scheduled for next Wednesday, January 27th. Many people assume that the big surprise could be the announcement of the soon-to-be-non-mythical slate / tablet, but we all know that Apple seldom makes one announcement. There's often "one more thing."
Clayton Morris at Fox News reported yesterday on information he received just before his invitation arrived for the event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. A "source at Apple" told him that the event was going to focus on three things: a new release of iLife, iPhone OS 4.0, and the tablet. He goes on to say that while iPhone OS 4.0 will be demoed, no new iPhone device is going to be announced.
The new version of iLife -- let's call it iLife '10 for the heck of it -- sounds reasonable. Early versions of iLife were announced and shipped on an annual basis for quite a few years, with iLife '08 spoiling the rhythm of releases. iLife '09 hit the stores last January, so it's not at all unlikely that iLife '10 and all of its components could be in our hands before Macworld Expo 2010.
iPhone OS 4.0? Equally likely. The event could feature a quick demo of new features to get everyone drooling, with the new OS version and possibly a new iPhone shipping simultaneously in the summer.
The tablet? There's the best possible "one more thing." I can see Steve Jobs now, smoothly demoing iLife '10's feature set for a while and talking about the new e-commerce widgets in iWeb '10, and then segueing into news about iPhone OS 4.0. Just about the time that all of the industry pundits are about to commit seppuku from fear that they're being misled, Stevie J. will reach under a MacBook Air and pluck out the device. And the crowd goes wild!!!
Just keep repeating to yourself -- "January 27th will be here before I know it."TUAWNew iLife, iPhone OS 4.0, and tablet next week? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 11:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

IPhone - Apple - Steve Job - iLife - MacBook AirПереслать - Report: Harper Collins, Apple negotiating tablet deal
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Hardware, Multimedia, Rumors
The Wall Street Journal is reporting this morning that Apple is in talks with Harper Collins regarding ebooks for the new tablet. They suggest that the publisher will set the prices of the books with Apple taking a cut, in similar fashion to the 30/70 split currently in place for the App Store (but percentages not determined). The most interesting line notes that the ebooks "...will have added features."
Back in December, HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray noted that "...e-books enhanced with video, author interviews and social-networking applications" were a possibility. Just watch this demo from Sports Illustrated to get an idea of the potential. While consumers love the über-cheap prices being offered on the Kindle and the Nook, publishers would undoubtedly like to bump them up a little. These additional features will serve both the consumer and the publisher: Shoppers get a more interesting ebook experience, wrapped in Apple style, while publishers receive a bigger payday.
The Wall Street Journal notes that other publishers have been talking with Apple without offering any additional details. Now that we have a firm date for the tablet's introduction (probably, maybe) the rumors are going to swirl ever faster. Hold on to your seats.

Apple - Wall Street Journal - E-book - HarperCollins - App StoreПереслать - Every "Get a Mac" ad in one place
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Switchers, Apple History
It's hard to believe that Apple's "Get a Mac" ad campaign is already 4 years old. Since its introduction, the campaign has invited both parody and serious responses from competitors. Plus, poor* John Hodgman and Justin Long can't walk out the door without someone calling them either "Mac" or "PC."
Some have been better than others (the Christmas ads are always a highlight), and Apple keeps several of each year's ads on their site. If you'd like to browse the full history of these ads, check out this page assembled by the folks at AdFreak. They've gathered every TV spot and sorted them chronologically. In case you were wondering, there have been 66 in total. The most ads aired in 2006 (19) and the fewest in 2009 (14).
Enjoy the archive and have fun re-watching your favorites.

Apple - Get a Mac - John Hodgman - Justin Long - AdFreakПереслать - App Store accounts for 99.4% of mobile apps in 2009?
Filed under: Apple, iPhone, App Store, iPod touch
Ars Technica has reported that a recent study from market research firm Gartner shows Apple's App Store is responsible for a staggering 99.4% of all mobile app sales in 2009. However, as Daring Fireball's John Gruber points out, Apple didn't say it sold 2.5 billion apps in 2009; users downloaded 2.5 billion apps in 2009, including free apps.
Even with that distinction between sales and downloads in mind, it's not difficult to see that Apple has a huge hold on the mobile app market, although it's probably not as huge as Gartner's numbers would lead us to believe. According to the Gartner study, all other mobile manufacturers' platforms combined accounted for a mere 16 million apps downloaded in 2009.
Note, however, that Gartner's analysis appears to focus on manufacturer-based stores (RIM, Microsoft, Google, etc.) rather than carrier-based stores (Verizon, Vodafone, etc.). It's likely that mobile phone service providers' stores account for a higher number of downloaded apps than the 16 million cited in Gartner's research; the study also doesn't appear to account for third-party stores for jailbroken iPhones, such as Cydia. This means Gartner's 99.4% number for Apple's mobile application marketshare is likely to be fairly wide of the mark.
Regardless of the possible inaccuracy of Gartner's figure, it's still clear that when it comes to mobile applications, the App Store has very effectively set the standard for the market.TUAWApp Store accounts for 99.4% of mobile apps in 2009? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 03:00:00 EST. Apple - Mac Pro - Macintosh - Extensible Firmware Interface - Apple Software UpdateПереслать - Using your iPhone in the city? Be careful!
Filed under: Hardware, Odds and ends, iPhone, iPod classic
I've lived in big cities for almost ten years now, first in Chicago and now in Los Angeles, and I could have told you exactly what this New York Times piece does: that you've got to be careful while using your iPhone while walking the city streets. We've heard about this before with the iPod, but an iPhone offers up even more distraction while walking around -- in between checking email, jumping on Twitter, and/or playing any number of games, it's practically impossible to spend enough attention on where you're walking and what you're doing even on a relatively clear street.
Think it's a joke? Over 1000 people found themselves in emergency rooms in 2008 because they were distracted while walking, says the article, which is twice the number from 2007, which itself was almost double the number from 2006 (and it's probably gotten higher in the last year). That's not to say that we need actual legislation to deal with this (although legislation has been discussed in New York, and there is already legislation on the books in many places against using your phone while driving), but it's something to keep in mind: I put my iPhone away whenever I cross a street, and just plain stop whenever I need to do anything more attention-deserving than switch a song or up the volume.
And it only took me one close call with a moving truck to figure that one out. If you're walking around with your iPhone or iPod in a busy urban environment, be careful out there.
Note: Clarified the statistics above; the 2008 number is approximately four times the 2006 number.TUAWUsing your iPhone in the city? Be careful! originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 21:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
