- Apple retail news: three new stores opened this weekend
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Retail
While all of the attention this weekend was around the launch of Snow Leopard, Apple opened up three new retail stores; two new stores in the US and one in Germany.
First, the company opened a new store in Hamburg, Germany on Saturday, which is now Apple's second store in Germany, after the store in Munich opened last December.
Second, there's a new store in Dedham, Massachusetts at the Legacy Place shopping center. This store will be the ninth store in the state of Massachusetts.
Finally, Apple also opened up a new store at the Stonebriar shopping complex in Frisco, Texas. This store makes it the sixth store in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
If you live in or are near one of these areas, be sure to check out your new Apple Store. As always, we would love to hear your stories of your first visit or see your photos!TUAWApple retail news: three new stores opened this weekend originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 30 Aug 2009 08:00:00 EST. The Apple Store is back up, with no apparent changes. It appears to have just been a maintenance update.
An earlier post went out claiming that the store had come up with a new 2 TB Time Capsule and a price reduction for the old 1 TB model. This was an editorial error, and we apologize for the misinformation.TUAWApple store back up; no apparent changes originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 30 Aug 2009 04:23:00 EST. One of the things touted in this latest incarnation of Mac OSX was its ability to work with Microsoft Exchange using Apple's Mail, Address Book and iCal applications. Well, I'm happy to report that Snow Leopard does, in fact, work pretty well with Exchange 2007.
Granted, this is only after limited testing, and it doesn't, as yet, work as well as Outlook for Windows, but it is a step in the right direction. One thing to consider before we go on is the fact that Snow Leopard will only play nicely with Exchange 2007 so if you don't have it or are not planning on having it, these new Exchange features in Snow Leopard won't work for you. You'll have the same access to Exchange 2003 from Mail (via IMAP) and Address Book that you did under Leopard.
That said, these new features of Snow Leopard offer a nice alternative to using the previous version of Entourage or the new Web Services Edition. Fortunately, if you are running Snow Leopard and Exchange 2007, setup could not be easier. All you need to do is launch Apple's Mail and select "Preferences" from the "Mail" menu.

We've gotten more than a few emails over the past 24 hours ruminating over how Snow Leopard has changed the way that file and drive sizes are calculated. It's been traumatic for some, having a psychological effect similar to Pluto losing its status as a full-fledged planet.
A great post over at MacFixIt explains the math about determining a file size -- and how the folks at Apple decided to follow the definitions of a "gigabyte," "kilobyte" and "megabyte" as they are commonly used in English (or, put a different way, just like in the metric system). So, a kilobyte is actually 1,000 bytes, and "officially" has been since 1999. Technically, the word for a 1,024-byte chunk of data is a kibibyte. Having kilo-, mega- and giga- SI prefixes refer to powers-of-10 in almost all realms, and powers-of-2 in information technology, was apparently becoming too confusing.
What does that mean in the real world? MacFixIt sums it up best:
"For all intents and purposes it means absolutely nothing! It does not change anything in how the computer runs, or how efficient it is at storing items on the drive. It has not compressed any of your data or somehow altered it to 'free up' any more space. Rather, it just means that everything will be reported as being slightly larger than [it] used to be, with the amount of difference depending on the prefix being used (the larger the prefix, the greater the percent difference)."
It's worth noting that you will see different file sizes reported when moving items between Snow Leopard and earlier systems, and the amount of free space on removable drives will appear to fluctuate -- but byte for byte, you've got the same amount of space in each case.
