- Weekend project - DIY cheap 500GB external drive
Ah, the weekend; it stretches out before you like an open field, waiting to be plowed into furrows of laundry, errands, home improvements and recreation. Of course, for us, recreation = new stuff for our beloved Macintoshes! Ready to load up that shiny new Airport Extreme with some capacious shared storage to hold your iTunes library? Let's see... mix one part Staples $140 closeout deal on 500GB Maxtor PATA internal drive, add in one part external FW/USB enclosure with wicked flame graphics for $30... result: one excellent drive that wouldn't look out of place alongside the Mystery Machine. If you prefer the MacAlly cases (rugged!), there's a free shipping deal on those too.
Now, for only $20 more you can have these guys assemble the USB-only case and drive for you, or these guys I've never heard of for only $145... but no pretty flames. Of course, if you want it to actually look good under the base station, then the Newer MiniStack is probably a better bet: the empty USB enclosure is only $60/$40 for an open-box unit, so add that Maxtor for some storage that's both functional AND stylish. Happy shopping!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Apple Store The Domain, Texas' newest location, opened a day early on Thursday (what they call a "soft opening" in the biz). It's a 45' store with no cash registers. Shoppers check out with any employee holding the requisite handheld device (which we've seen at other locations). How convenient.
As usual, we've asked any TUAW operatives who may visit the store this weekend to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments. Here's hoping you scored a T-shirt.
While you're there, show your love and set the display Macs internet homepages to TUAW!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Even the most rabid fan of Apple has to concede that the company doesn't pitch very aggressively to the enterprise customer. The Xserve typically doesn't get any time in the spotlight - not even at WWDC - and Apple doesn't exactly build a super low-end Mac that's ripe for squeezing Dell out of the millions of cubicles it currently inhabits. Seth Weintraub at Computerworld, however, thinks these facts are fading away in the mind of the enterprise customer, and things could be on the verge of a change.
Opening with a bulleted list of the major advantages the Mac now offers to the enterprise in terms of both hardware and software, Seth penned a 5-page article (sadly, Computerworld still practices pageview inflation) that essentially reads as a shopping guide for enterprise customers who might finally be getting curious about Apple's offerings. Seth even delves into some of the politics surrounding these kinds of purchases and how the Mac's eroding perceptions as a "consumer toy" or not being a high-end machine can be defeated when it's time to lay down the plastic.
One of the more interesting observations Seth makes, which is becoming more and more prevalent during what is perhaps Apple's most popular time in history, is that more and more decision-making business users are buying Macs for personal use. Seth comments that these users are beginning to realize that "what works well at home could do well at work." We couldn't have put it better ourselves.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Odds and ends, TUAW Tip
Here at TUAW we're all about the public service. Really. We would hate for you to be late for brunch on Sunday, so once again let us remind you that Daylight Saving Time starts in most of the US & Canada this weekend. This year, thanks to regulatory changes, the one-hour shift starts two weeks early and ends one week later than in previous seasons. Of course, any gadget or widget with date logic in it sold before 2005 has no idea of the new rules, so this seemingly minor change has the impact of a nano-sized Y2K -- off by an hour, off by a millennium, same hassles.
The good news for Mac users is that OS X has, since version 10.4.5, included the new schedule; the recent software updates provided corrected settings for time zones outside the US and patches for 10.3 and Java. Better news: since OS X and similar Unix-like systems use Universal (Greenwich Mean) time internally, Mac clock chips don't have to worry about DST; the offset is handled in software. Windows, on the other hand, sets the hardware clock to local time; this causes the Boot Camp "five hours off" behavior and is the subject of much gnashing of teeth.
Of course, if it were a Mac-only world, things would be shiny and clean, but real life is gritty and messy. Assuming you're running some products from Microsoft, you can get the basics for fixes and updates here. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that things are going all that well with the big MS and DST: reader Chris points us to where eWeek has the scoop on the frustrations. Better call and check those brunch plans.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/09/daylight-saving-time-last-minute-reminder/#comments - Groupcal 3 updated
Filed under: Software
Snerdware last week updated the iCal/Exchange middleware package Groupcal to version 3.80, adding one-way file sync to the feature list, among other enhancements. For Mac users in MS Exchange shops, the combination of Groupcal/iCal for calendaring, Mail for email, and Snerdware's AddressX for Global Address List sync provide a workable alternative to Entourage 2004's PIM functionality.
Groupcal licenses start at $55 with aggressive volume licensing available. Meanwhile, I'd better look for some products that don't have a duck in their logo...Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

The first Universal Binary version of Audiocorder is out, giving voice-activated/unattended recording capabilities to the Intelians among us. You can program your copy of Audiocorder to start taping on a schedule, or when the ambient audio level rises above a threshold. You could even tape off the modem input on some models; and all this for $20!
Now, Audiocorder is only one of Black Cat's products; don't forget to check out this handy-dandy Mac-compatible radiation detector.
