- 40% higher demand for the iPad 2 vs original iPad
RBC Capital Markets released a survey today in which they asked 2000 people how likely they were to buy an iPad 2. 28% of respondents are either "very likely" or "somewhat likely." That's a whopping 40% more potential buyers than the respondents of a similar survey released after the first iPad came out. In that survey only 20% of respondents said they were "very likely" or "somewhat likely" to buy the original iPad.
Another interesting finding from the survey is that the prime choice of Wi-Fi iPad models have shifted. With the original survey the most popular iPad Wi-Fi model was the 16 GB one, followed by the 32 GB model, and finally the 64 GB model. The iPad 2 survey shows that now the most popular iPad 2 Wi-Fi model is the 32 GB one, followed by the entry-level 16 GB model, and then the 64 GB model. The popularity of iPad 2 3G models match the original iPad 3G models with the 64 GB one coming in first place, followed by the 32 GB model, and finally the 16 GB model.

Переслать - MacTech Boot Camp revving up for Dallas, coming to Boston, LA, and Chicago later this year
Our friends at the MacTech Boot Camp series of conferences for Mac consultants and IT techs are rolling right into 2011. They've got a session planned in Dallas for April 27, and then they're headed up to Boston for another event on May 18.
We're told there's still room at the Dallas event, and the usual pricing has been lowered to $395, so you TUAW readers can follow this special discount link to see the show for just $295. Sessions include a packed schedule of panels and demos, lots and lots of networking, and included meals and refreshments -- if you've never been to one of these and do any Mac consulting or IT work with Macs, they're definitely worth seeing. You can even get certified at the events -- Apple Certification Testing is taking place the day before each session, and there's also a proctor-moderated group study session included before that, so you can do some last-minute cramming with your fellow pupils. Testing for MacTech Boot Camp attendees is only $199, significantly cheaper than usual.
Finally, early bird registration is still underway for the sessions later on this year -- the conference will be in Los Angeles on July 27, and in Chicago on August 31. If you're in either of those cities, definitely consider attending.

Переслать - iPads to be made in Brazil?
Reuters reports that Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant that produces iPods, iPhones and iPads in China, is in ongoing talks to invest US $12 billion in building manufacturing facilities in Brazil.
Dilma Rousseff, the Brazilian president, reportedly said that this is under consideration and has said that she considers tablet computing as a viable option to inexpensively bring the Internet to the lower-middle class of Brazil (around 80 million people). However a rough translation from Digital&Midia suggests that it's a done deal and that iPads would be coming out of Brazil at the end of November. That report should be taken with a large grain of salt... we don't have a Portuguese speaker in the house, unfortunately, so we'd welcome a more direct translation.
It's easy to spot some pitfalls in Brazil for Foxconn. The manufacturer is in the business of finding the cheapest cost of production; Brazil has one of the highest import tariffs in South America, and is considered to be quite an expensive place to do business due to such factors as heavy taxes, poor labor laws and a possibly overvalued currency. So at first blush, Foxconn doing business in Brazil doesn't seem to make sense.
On the other hand, if it were to happen, import tariffs would be avoided, allowing Apple to step into the highly taxed Brazilian market at lower cost. Right now the cheapest iPad in Brazil sells for $860 while the US price of the lowest end iPad 2 is $499. If iPads were manufactured in Brazil the selling cost would drop locally and in neighboring South American countries.
So will it happen? Talks have been progressing for three months according to Aloizio Mercadente, who serves as Brazil's Science and Technology minister, and there are ongoing negotiations with other technology manufacturing companies at the same time. This leads us to question the Digital&Midia story saying that a deal has been struck. We'll be keeping an eye to the south for more news soon.

Переслать - Cisco to shutter Flip camera line
Cisco has announced that it's shutting down the Flip video camera line, purchased a few years ago from Pure Digital for a whopping $590 million, for good. That's a shame -- while of course the iPod nano and the iPhone (and now the iPad 2) have carried video cameras of varying quality for a little while now, I really liked using my Flip minoHD, and often used it to shoot a few quick HD videos to edit in iMovie or elsewhere. As you can see in the various comparison videos, the Flip was a more than worthy competitor to Apple's growing video capabilities, and arguably one reason why Apple moved so quickly on handheld HD video in the first place.
The reasons for the shutdown likely have more to do with Cisco's position rather than any competition with video hardware itself -- the IT giant picked up the boutique camera manufacturer, some analysts say, because it wanted to get into consumer electronics. But the company just wasn't ready to deal with that market, and the analysis on this shutdown now says Cisco is just declaring a surrender on a deal it thought would work out.
That said, the field of consumer video electronics is definitely changing fast -- as devices like the iPhone become ever more powerful and capable of shooting and even editing video, traditional handheld cameras will have to move fast to keep up.

Переслать - Lessons learned from the iPhone tab bar
The Internet is a great resource for developers looking for tips, tricks and solutions to troubling coding problems. Sometimes these nuggets of information are found in highly visited websites like Stack Overflow. Other times, these resources are uncovered accidentally via a series of web links that lead to an interesting blog chock full of information. Such is the case with a recent blog post by Petter Silfver of significantpixels.
Silfver presents a compelling case for developers to spend time designing the iPhone Tab Bar. The tab bar is the core navigation element within an iOS application and its design is often the difference between a good and a great application. Silfver provides six rules for tab bar design that he gleaned from his years of mobile development. The tips range from the common sense such as "never change tab from a non-tab-bar navigational action" to the more complex reasons that determine whether you should customize a tab bar or leave it alone.
Current or prospective iOS developers should take a look at Silfver's post. Even if you don't agree with all the points, it is an excellent read for those interested in the design as well as the technical side of application development.

Переслать - Apple, Amazon and others are named in Walker Digital patent suit
Walker Digital is using its patent library as a giant war hammer against more than 100 companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook and Apple. Walker Digital is a US-based research and development firm for technology patents and holds over 400 issued and pending patents both in the US and internationally.
The company generates an estimated US$200 million in licensing revenue from these patents. Besides its robust patent portfolio, Jay Walker, founder of Walker Digital, also launched Priceline and the two companies were tied closely together at launch.
Reports from AppleInsider and Reuters don't identify the specific technology involved in this lawsuit, but Walker Digital claims Apple et al. are infringing on patents the company created in the 1990s. The Stamford, Connecticut company reportedly reached out to the companies named in this suit, but its request for licensing fell on deaf ears. Walker Digital then filed its patent infringement lawsuit in US District Court in Delaware on Tuesday.

Переслать - Websites now offering hack-free iPhone unlocking
Over the past few weeks several websites have popped up that allow iPhone owners to unlock their phones without a jailbreak or hack... for a substantial fee.
The sites CutYourSim and Negri Electronics are advertising "permanent" iPhone unlocks, while the sites Unlockbase and GSMPhoneSource are offering "unlock" services. Prices for unlocking your iPhone range from between US$170 and $180.
What's interesting about these unlock approaches is that they don't require any hacks or jailbreaks; per iPhone jailbreak hacker MuscleNerd, they appear to directly access Apple's database and add IMEI device identifiers to it, which then tells iTunes to unlock the iPhone the next time it is plugged in. CutYourSim even states that unlocking through them will not affect the warranty status of your iPhone, as this is an "official iPhone unlock."
Readers who choose to go down this route should be extremely careful, however. Though two of the sites advertise the unlock as permanent, it is possible Apple can tell which IMEI device identifiers were unlocked using these third-party websites. If it can, it's possible Apple could choose to relock the phones. Also if these websites actually have access to Apple's databases, I expect the sites to be shut down within the next few days. Something tells me Apple Legal isn't going to take kindly to this.

Переслать - Pieceable lets iPhone developers demo apps in a browser
Pieceable has introduced an online tool that lets iPhone developers offer a preview of their application to prospective customers. The tool, called Viewer, uses Flash to display a version of the application that can previewed using a web browser. Developers can easily implement this service by
adding a line of Pieceable-specific code to their iPhone appcompiling the app for the Xcode iOS Simulator (rather than an actual device) and uploading their application file to Pieceable's website. Pieceable will generate a web link to your app that you can share with others. The tool only supports iPhone apps; a future version will add support for the iPad.Pieceable is a premium service, but a free trial is available that lets you share one application for one hour with one person at a time. A Pro version costs $60 per month and lets you share an unlimited number of applications for an unlimited amount of time with ten simultaneous viewers. If you need something in between, Pieceable offers a Basic plan that lets you upload five applications for an unlimited amount of time with three simultaneous viewers.
Similar tools already exist for Android. Bluestacks recently launched a Windows-based viewer for Android applications and Amazon's new Android Appstore lets users demo select applications from within their web browser. While Android developers have options to offer online and desktop demos of their applications, Pieceable's Viewer is the first such web service for iOS devices.

Переслать - Don't hold your breath for an Apple video streaming service
Flickr image by tphollandI'm pretty convinced every time an analyst opens his or her mouth about Apple and we post it, a kitten is eaten by a bear somewhere*. This week's "Wacky Analyst Random Rumormongering" comes from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek who claims that Apple is about to launch "a new far reaching cloud-based service" based on video. Oh, really? Let's examine the reasons why we are visiting fantasyland, shall we?
At least Business Insider was so bold as to say this is "informed speculation," although that's pretty much what these analysts do, isn't it? Unfortunately, the speculation appears to have happened in a brushed-aluminum vacuum chamber, where Apple is capable of setting terms with media companies and ISPs at-will and everyone works in a completely ego-free marketplace -- but none of those things are true in reality. Besides, the "streaming media" speculation has been around ever since this data center had a concrete foundation.
Misek claims the data center is going live soon and that Apple will build others around the world. Plus, he says this data center is "too big" for mere music. Well, we knew the data center would go online this Spring, since Apple told us all this in a quarterly earnings call. The part about building more around the world is pure speculation. Apple uses Akamai for caching, so why bother with more data centers so soon? It's possible, but I see no evidence considering how long it took them to build this data center. Then again, Apple Retail has had a meteoric rise... As for the thing being "too big" for video, what about software services? This isn't just about storing petabytes of data, this is also about uptime, scaling and keeping monstrous amounts of data intact. You know, like email and calendars and possibly office documents.

Переслать - Mac OS X Lion to tone down the Aqua
The Aqua interface has been a staple of Mac OS X since version 10.0, but now it appears that Apple is toning down the aqua appearance of its operating system in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. As you can see from the screen shot above, Apple has removed a lot of the aqua trimmings from drop-down menus, they've also taken the pill-shaped aqua buttons and given them a more flat, rectangular appearance.
In addition to the changes above, Lion has also stripped out OS X's aqua scroll bars and replaced them with iOS-like scroll bars which fade away when not in use. The white pill button found in the upper-right corner of a Finder or app's window, which shows or hides a window's toolbar, has also now been replace with a full screen button.
I'm a fan of the new look myself. I'm glad Apple hasn't totally abandoned the aqua interface, but it's nice that they've toned it down. If you want to see more of the subtle changes listed above, click on over to AppleInsider, which posted the above images.

Переслать - Survey illustrates iPad's effect on PC market
A recent survey by Google-owned AdMob found many consumers are spending more time on their tablets and less time sitting at their personal computers, using their smartphones, watching television, listening to the radio, or reading paper books. The survey highlights the rapidly shifting habits of customers in a tablet market AdMob expects will reach 165 million devices over the next two years.
Among the 1,430 tablet owners who participated in the survey, 77% admitted to spending less time with their personal computers after buying a tablet, 43% said they now use their tablets more than their personal computers, and 28% claimed to use a tablet as their primary computer. Most tablet users, 68%, spent at least 1 hour each day with the device, primarily for playing games (84%), searching for information (78%), or email correspondence (74%).
The survey results didn't reveal any future buying decisions, but these new usage patterns may suggest a near future in which consumers spend less time and money on notebook and desktop computers. Are you spending less time at your personal computer since getting an iPad or other tablet device? Will it make you less likely to buy a notebook or desktop machine in the future? Let us know in the comments.

Переслать - Mobee Magic Bar offers wireless charging for Magic Trackpad, Apple keyboard
If you've ever laid eyes on a Palm Pre smartphone, you know that one of the features that makes its owners excited is how the phone is charged; it's simply put on top of a charger called a TouchStone and the battery is topped off via inductive charging. There's no need to plug a charging cable into the device itself.
Mobee Technology's Magic Bar is designed to perform a similar inductive charging task, except not with a phone. Instead, it's designed to keep your Magic Trackpad and Apple Wireless Keyboard topped off with power.
The US$59.99 Magic Bar won't be available until late June, and works by replacing the batteries in the wireless keyboard or trackpad with a rechargeable battery cylinder. When your Mac begins squawking about your keyboard or trackpad needing new batteries, you slide the interface device into a dock that looks similar to the TwelveSouth MagicWand. Through induction, the battery cylinder is recharged, after which time you can pull the trackpad or keyboard out of the dock.
The Magic Bar is powered through a standard USB connection, so it doesn't require a separate power brick. I'm frankly perplexed by the product, since it adds yet another USB cable to the back of a Mac and would take up space on a desktop. It's also twice the price of the $29 Apple Battery Charger, which takes the minimalist approach to "green power" by providing six rechargeable batteries and a tiny plug-in recharger.
Still, the Magic Bar will likely get the attention of those who are impressed with the concept of inductive charging. Pre-orders begin on May 15, 2011.

Переслать - Distant Suns celebrates 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's epic ride with a free app
It was 50 years ago today that the son of a Russian farmer rocketed into space and became the first man to orbit the earth. Yuri Gagarin's 108 minute trip in his Vostok spacecraft ushered in the era of manned space flight, as the US followed up with the Mercury, Gemini, and later the Apollo missions to the moon. In 1975 the US and Russia stopped competing and began the Apollo-Soyuz missions. Joint missions continue today on the International Space Station.
To celebrate the event, Distant Suns 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch is free today only. The app is a pretty complete star map, with 130,000 stars, 88 constellations and the Messier catalog of galaxies, nebula and star clusters. I've reviewed the app in the past and found it a worthwhile purchase. It's even better for free. Author Mike Smithwick produced one of the first computerized star map programs way back in 1985 for the Amiga 1000. Mike also produced Distant Suns 3 for the iPhone and iPad which is even more sophisticated and is designed for the iPhone and iPad. It's on sale for US $4.99 today only.
A couple other astronomy app notes of interest. Star Walk, the award winning astronomy guide has been updated to include augmented reality. It activates the camera, and superimposes accurate star positions over the portion of sky you are pointing too. It's very cool to use during the day too, because it will show you where the planets and other objects are that are made invisible by the sun. The iPhone version of Star Walk is on sale for $0.99 and that sale ends today. The app also now supports TV out on the iPhone 4.

Переслать - Eye-Fi Mobile X2 card and mobile apps enable Direct Mode transfer of pics
The makers of the Eye-Fi Wi-Fi enabled SDHC memory cards have announced a new feature today -- the ability to use Wi-Fi Direct Mode and special Eye-Fi mobile apps to transfer pictures from a digital camera to a mobile device when there's no wireless network available. This was first announced back in January, and is finally about to drop.
A new 8 GB Mobile X2 card with the Direct Mode enabled will be available starting on April 17 for US$79.99, and a free firmware upgrade will be available to owners of existing X2 Eye-Fi cards to add the capability one week later.
Direct Mode makes it possible, with the aid of new Eye-Fi apps for iOS and Android, to simply take photos with a digital camera and have them uploaded to the mobile devices in seconds without the need for cables. I'm personally happy about that, since I find the Apple Camera Connection Kit dongles extremely easy to lose (and they're not exactly inexpensive).
With an iPhone (or Android phone) in your pocket and an Eye-Fi Mobile X2 card in your camera, you can also make instant backups of your photos, even when you're nowhere near a Wi-Fi network.
There's a short marketing video on the next page courtesy of Eye-Fi.

Переслать - Terminal Tip: Find out which files won't be backed up
Backing up is one of the most important things you can do on a Mac, and thankfully, it's a pretty trivial affair with Time Machine built right in. Of course, when you're looking at what needs backing up, people often overlook what doesn't need backing up (or isn't, but should be).
A good example of this would be a rented media file, like a TV show rented from iTunes. It's only valid for 48 hours, so even if you do back it up, by the time you've restored your machine after a system failure, it's unlikely to play anyway. In essence, it's wasted space.
Thankfully, OS X has a built-in system of defining what should and shouldn't be backed up using metadata, and for the most part, it happens under your nose without you even noticing. There are times when it would be useful to see what's marked for backup and what's not, however, and that's where we turn to Terminal.

Переслать - History 3D brings the Civil War to life
Just in time for the anniversary of the Civil War, History 3D for iPad brings the past to life. If you have a pair of anaglyph 3D glasses (the red and blue kind) handy, it gets even better.
There are two dozen pictures to view in black and white and anaglyph 3D. The 3D images were taken using cameras with two or four lenses for a stereoscopic effect. These 3D photos amazed me, and I consider US$.99 for the app well worth it for this bit of history.
The interface is great; it's basically a storybook you can page through. Flip through the photos, and tap to bring up the story behind the photos. The 3D images created in the making of this app are being donated copyright-free to the Library of Congress.
You have to find your own 3D glasses at this point, but there will be links to stores which carry them on the support website soon. I definitely recommend commemorating this period in our history with a fresh look at the actual events of the Civil War. Check out a YouTube trailer, and pop over to the App Store to get your copy of History 3D.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Notability
We've looked at a few good note-taking applications for the iPad before, but I don't think we've mentioned Notability yet. Notability is a simple yet powerful note-taking app for iPad that allows you to jot down notes in lectures or meetings, outline certain ideas and plans, or just collect your thoughts in an organized format. It's a piece of cake to punch in text in a certain font or layout, then add all kinds of media, from web clips to diagrams. You can link up audio to your notes, even connecting text to sound with a clickable link. When your notes are saved, you can sync them off to Dropbox or iDisk, or you can email them off to another computer to work on elsewhere.
We've recommended Simplenote in the past (and its free price tag is probably one reason for its popularity), but I like the look of Notability as well. At its current iPad 2 launch sale price of just US$0.99, it's definitely worth a download if you're looking for another option for note-taking on Apple's tablet.

Переслать - Digitimes: No iPad 3 this year
Remember back in February when the iPad 2 hadn't even launched yet, but there were already rumors of an iPad 3 set to hit the market this fall? Well, according to Digitimes, those rumors aren't likely to amount to anything this year. When iPad 3 rumors originally surfaced, the idea was thrown around that the iPad 2 may be a kind of transitional product, and the "real" iPad upgrade would appear in the fall as a kind of iPad 2.5 model. Now Digitimes' sources are stating that iPad component makers have "not yet received any notice for next generation iPad products and do not believe iPad 2 is a transitional product."
Another big rumor for the iPad 3 was that it will sport a Retina Display. While it's likely it will, it's not likely an iPad with a Retina Display will appear this year. Sources told Digitimes that while Apple has been asking touchscreen panel makers to provide screens that can provide higher resolutions than the current iPad 2 screen, the project is still in the "initial planning stage" and thus unlikely to appear in 2011. In short, if you're holding off getting an iPad 2 because you expect Apple to launch an iPad 3 in the fall, don't hold your breath.

Still, the $114 price point seems a little silly; $99 would be a much better psychological buy-in point.
While an ad-supported iPad is unlikely, it would be interesting to see Apple offer ad-supported e-books in the iBookstore. Apple does hold quite a few patents on advertising options related to video advertising and hardware subsidization through ads, as well as its iAd platform. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to think that Apple could offer publishers iAds support for their books, which would allow them to sell e-books more cheaply, yet still bring in sufficient (and recurring) revenues.

Переслать - Dear Apple, here's our Final Cut Studio wishlist
Today the NAB exhibit hall opened, and just about everyone in the video world is showing off the hot new stuff they've been waiting to announce to video professionals from around the world. Apple, however, is notably absent again this year, choosing instead to make an announcement tomorrow evening at the Final Cut Pro Users Group SuperMeet. As rumors of a long awaited update to Final Cut Studio started circulating, we asked you how the new version needed to change.
While some commentators defended Final Cut Studio enthusiastically, most of us feel that an update is long overdue despite our affection for Apple's professional video suite. Some users have already jumped ship because their needs are better filled by alternative editing applications, while other users plan to give Apple a chance to meet all their needs with a new update before deciding to explore other options.

Переслать - TUAW Giveaway: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for Mac
One thing I love about the Mac App Store is that, game-wise, it eliminates the need to insert physical media into your Mac to play games. Over the past few days I've been playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on my MacBook Pro, and without the need for a disc, the game just flies, which helps make it that much more enjoyable. It also, of course, helps that Call of Duty is a heck of a great series.

Переслать - Apptwee Ri universal remote for iOS is inexpensive and tiny
With the success of all handheld iOS devices -- iPhone, iPod touch and iPad -- it's not surprising that manufacturers want to turn them into universal remote controls. Some manufacturers are going the more expensive route, like Peel with their $99 remote that features a pear-shaped transmitter that sits between your iOS box and your A/V equipment.
On the other end of the spectrum is a company called Apptwee, which has come out with the Ri, a tiny remote control unit that plugs into the headphone port of your device (see image at right). The US$19.99 Ri is a bit smaller than the Square card reader, and when coupled with the free Ri app, it transforms your device into an infrared universal remote.
Ri is short for Remote Interactive, and it currently supports over 72 different device types and over 845 devices. It's not a learning remote, meaning that it can't be "taught" commands by your IR-controlled devices, but the company is adding new devices on a regular basis.
We're hoping to get a Ri for a review in the near future. In the meantime, you can order one of the devices directly from the Apptwee website, or watch their short getting acquainted video on the next page.

Переслать - A5 beats Tegra 2 in benchmark tests, thanks to larger size
GLBenchmark pitted a few tablet processors against each other in a speed showdown, and Apple's custom-designed A5 chip in the iPad 2 handily beats NVIDIA's Tegra 2 processor, used in competing tablets like the Motorola Xoom. A few analysts are saying that it's the size that matters in this case -- Apple's chip is more than twice the size of the Tegra 2, and that allows Apple to pull off some better benchmarks, even though the two chips are relatively the same in terms of specifications. Usually, of course, a bigger chip would mess with the design of the overall hardware, but since Apple is doing everything itself, it can afford the extra space and the larger components.
Of course, NVIDIA is set to introduce a Tegra 3 chip later on this year, and that will undoubtedly introduce a new wrinkle to the tablet lineup. Apple no doubt also has its engineers working on faster chips, which means the speed of tablet computing likely still has a long way to progress.

Переслать - The Moov wireless case for iPhone streams video to TV
A company named Olion has introduced a neat add-on for the iPhone called The Moov. It's a case for the iPhone 4 that connects to the dock and streams out video wirelessly. The presenter in the video (which you can watch after the break) calls it the "first mobile to TV solution," but of course, that's not true -- we've seen lots of ways to get video out of the iPhone and onto the TV.
Still, this one's pretty elegant, and it's all wireless, even though that means it's limited by about three hours of battery life. The speed in the video looks good, and the case sends off a signal to any WHDI receiver. Olion doesn't have a price or release date yet -- the Israel-based startup is still looking for manufacturing partners, apparently. But it's a cool idea with what seems to be a nice implementation. We'll keep an eye out for it.

Переслать - Viacom says 'not so fast' on that Cablevision iPad app
The pioneering road that leads to watching cable programming on an iPad just got a bit bumpier. Cablevision has received notice from Viacom that the cable provider's iPad app, which provides both live TV and video on demand to subscribers, is stepping over the line in terms of the programming it can legitimately stream via the app.
Last week Viacom hit Time Warner Cable with a lawsuit over another iPad app. Time Warner has taken Viacom to court, claiming it has every right to distribute cable programming via iPad as long as it limits the programming to its cable/ISP customers. Earlier this month Time Warner dropped some cable channels from the app in an attempt to please programmers who didn't want content streamed.
In a company statement Viacom said: "Cablevision has seized distribution rights that Viacom has not granted. Viacom grants rights to distribute our content based on specific technologies and devices. We will take the steps necessary to ensure that Cablevision respects our rights."
Meanwhile, Cablevision countered: "Cablevision's agreements with programmers allow us to deliver cable television service to our customers, regardless of how many or what kinds of televisions they have in the home."
Note the key differences in those statements. Viacom thinks it has granted rights to its programming based on a definition of 'television' that means 'box plugged into cable connection'; meanwhile, Cablevision (and Time Warner) are making the case that 'screens are screens' -- regardless of the connection method, if it plays TV programming, an iPad can be just as much a television as a 42" plasma. It may take a long time and a lot of money to sort out (and possibly a linguist to define 'television'). We'll keep our eyes on it and let you know who wins.

Переслать - iChair for iPad 2 looking for a little Kickstarter love
In the last year, just about every iPad case or stand has made it to my office for a review. While I don't always write them up, I often show the products on TUAW TV Live. It doesn't matter what I'm showing; there's always someone for whom the product is perfect, and a lot of people liked the case that I'm writing about here. For people who want the protection of a case and the convenience of the stand, the iChair (no, not the helmsman's chair from Norway) is one of the better designs I've seen.
We received one of the iPad cases and an iPhone 4 case earlier this month for review, and while the iPhone case was inadvertently used as a giveaway for our TUAW meetups, I still have the iPad case and decided to give it a try. Vindi Sedey, the CEO of iChair, is trying to get funding on Kickstarter to start manufacturing the iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPod touch versions of the combo case and stand. At this point, he's quite a bit away from his goal of $15,000 worth of funding, but given the quality of the iChair for the original iPad, I thought I'd give the product a little push here on TUAW.
Check out the review of the original iChair on the next page, and if you like what you see, help out a young entrepreneur as a backer for his project.

Переслать - Thunderbolt peripherals announced at NAB this week
Sure, you've got a shiny new MacBook Pro with that top-of-the-line Thunderbolt interface, but odds are that you don't have anything besides a DisplayPort adapter to plug it into yet! Worry not -- the National Association of Broadcasters is meeting in Las Vegas this week, and a few companies there are announcing new products designed to work with the Thunderbolt interface.
Matrox and AJA are announcing breakout boxes to hook up current products to the Thunderbolt port, while Blackmagic Design has a box called UltraStudio 3D designed to transfer high-quality 3D video (that's two different streams in full resolution), and PROMISE is showing off both SAN/FibreChannel adapter boxes and the previously announced RAID hard drive solutions. Not so coincidentally, we were just talking about the likelihood of new Thunderbolt gear on last night's Talkcast.
Before you get too excited, know that most of these product announcements are just that -- the actual products probably won't be out later this year, and most of these products are for high-end audio or video editing rather than anything your average consumer would need. But the key here is that we are seeing some adoption of this new standard at the highest levels, and that's good news for anyone who owns an Apple computer, since Apple has already decided that Thunderbolt is the new interface of choice. Bottom line: That new port on your MacBook Pro has more uses every day.

Переслать - iOS 4.3.2 may fix Verizon iPad, FaceTime issues
Apple's iOS 4.3.2 is due to land in the upcoming weeks, and speculation is running rampant about what changes this update may bring. According to BGR, which claims to have the update in hand, iOS 4.3.2 will fix the data roaming issue reportedly plaguing iPad 2 tablets on Big Red's 3G network. This annoying bug reportedly causes the iPad 2 to always roam on Verizon's 3G network.
The update may also cure the issue with FaceTime, which is causing the iPad 2's front camera to freeze when the video chat application launches. Lastly, iOS 4.3.2 may also bring a variety of security fixes and performance improvements to Apple's suite of iOS devices.

Переслать - Rumor: iPhone 5 won't be shipping until fiscal 2012
Here's the latest iPhone 5 rumor. Business Insider (BI) suggests that iPhone 5 production won't begin until September, which means at the earliest it would hit shelves in October, or the first quarter of Apple's fiscal 2012.
BI goes on to suggest that it's possible the iPhone 5 won't ship until calendar 2012. The report comes from an Avian Securities analyst, based on conversations with a "key component supplier" to Apple.
I really don't know about this rumor. I can see Apple holding off on the iPhone 5 until the fall so that it could add LTE. Also, such a delay would give Verizon iPhone 4 customers who bought on day one a little more time to feel that their device is the latest and greatest. But, having no new iPhone hardware debut in 2011 seems like a big stretch to me.
Of course, Alvin also suggests that Apple could be introducing a lower price/lower spec iPhone model, which is basically the iPhone nano rumor rehashed again. If Apple is going to hold off on the iPhone 5 until calendar 2012, then an iPhone nano might just tide the angry masses and shareholders over until then.

Переслать - iPhone 4 to hit India via Bharti Airtel Ltd, Aircel
The iPhone 4 may land in India in the coming months according to a report from Reuters. Both Bharti Airtel and smaller rival Aircel confirmed they would soon carry the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, residents of India who want to mark a launch date on their calendar will have to wait as neither carrier announced an exact availability date for Apple's popular smartphone.
The iPhone is not new to this country; previous versions of the iPhone are available from Bharti and Vodafone Essar. Apple's move to bring the iPhone 4 to India should help boost sales as the Indian mobile phone market is prime for growth in the upcoming years.
Carriers are rolling out high-speed 3G networks, and smartphones account for a mere 5 percent of all mobile sales. A staggering 95 percent of cell phone owner are prospective future iPhone and smartphone owners. Overall, India boasts 800 million mobile phone subscribers. Bharti alone has 159 million, while Aircel has 53.5 million.

Переслать - Adobe Audition moves to Mac with CS5.5, Soundbooth EOL
It's one of those things where you blink and you almost miss it, but part of Adobe's CS5.5 announcement earlier today includes the news that Adobe is finally releasing its Audition software. Adobe Soundbooth, its Mac-only audio toolset, has reached end-of-life status, and development and sales will cease April 24. A beta version of Adobe Audition for the Mac was released in November.
Soundbooth users on CS3, CS4 or CS5 can upgrade to Adobe Audition CS5.5 for US$99. Those who upgrade their Production Premium or Master Collection will automatically have full access to the software. Normal retail price of Audition will be $349.

Переслать - iPhone 4 supply stabilizes in Hong Kong, China greenlights iPad 2
Supplies of the iPhone 4 in Hong Kong have nearly caught up with demand, according to a report from MacNN. The popular handset is now regularly available on the Apple online store in Hong Kong, with wait times of 5-7 business days.
Previously, Apple intermittently suspended sales of the iPhone 4 in the region, presumably in response to incredible demand. Since Hong Kong has no sales tax, visitors from mainland China and other neighboring countries would reportedly visit the region, buy as many bargain-priced iPhones as they could, bring them home and then sell them for up to twice as much on the gray market. As a result, the Apple online store in Hong Kong often listed all models of the iPhone 4 as "currently unavailable." Now, in response to increased supply or tapering sales, Hong Kong apparently has enough iPhone 4s to keep the device on sale full time.
On a related note, China certified Apple's iPad 2 for sale on the Chinese mainland last Friday. The China Compulsory Certification (3C) is mandatory for many products sold in China. Apple has yet to announce a launch date for the iPad 2 in China, but the compulsory license, which lasts until April 8, 2016, allows the company to begin official sales of the device on the Chinese mainland at any time.
The iPad 2, which is currently shipping in over two dozen countries, is scheduled to go on sale in South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong later this month.

Переслать - Parrot set to release AR.FlyingAce game for AR.Drone quadricopter
The TUAW blogging team has had a group gadget crush on the US$299 AR.Drone quadricopter since we first got our anxious little hands on the iPhone-controlled flying machine at Macworld Expo 2010. At the time, manufacturer Parrot said that it would be coming out with an open software development kit so that iOS developers could whip up their own apps.
Last year, Parrot started selling its own augmented-reality game, AR.Pursuit ($2.99) on the iTunes App Store. If you have a couple of AR.Drones or have friends with the devices, you can play a virtual "tag" type game with the app and drones. But we've all been waiting for the dogfighting app that Parrot has been teasing us with since Day One.
Now iLounge is reporting that you'll be able to pursue and shoot down (virtually) other AR.Drones starting on Tax Day, April 15 -- a day you'll probably want to be wreaking havoc as you rush to get your taxes done by the later 2011 deadline of April 18. The AR.FlyingAce app is going to hit the App Store at a yet-undisclosed price, and the app requires a couple of AR.Drones, but if the preview video (next page) is any indication, it looks like a barrel of fun.

Переслать - Nintendo 3DS sales affected by iPod touch and iPad, says IHS iSuppli
Nintendo recently launched the 3DS, and the portable gaming device is selling strongly. Despite this burst of early sales, IHS iSuppli predicts the 3DS will not reach the high sales numbers of its predecessor, the Nintendo DS. iSuppli predicts Nintendo will sell 70 million 3DS gaming systems by 2015, a figure that is 21 million less than the 91 million in sales racked up by the original DS at the same point in its sales cycle.
The DS was developed and debuted during the non-Apple years when the iPhone and iPod touch were still on the drawing boards within Apple's Cupertino campus. The DS climbed rapidly to the top of the portable gaming market and remained in that position for years. Even the PlayStation Portable could not dethrone the DS from its throne as king of the portable gaming devices.
The 3DS, according to iSuppli, is launching in a market that is increasingly losing market share to Apple's iOS devices and Android smartphones. Folks carrying an iPhone have access to a plethora of iOS games and do not need a dedicated gaming device. The 3DS includes several notable features, including 3D graphics effects, camera, video support and always-on Wi-Fi connectivity, but these features are not compelling enough for the average user to give up their iOS device and pick up a 3DS.
Any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch gamers care to chime in and let us know if you intend to buy a 3DS? Or does your iOS device meet all of your portable gaming needs?
