- Group video chat coming to iPhone via fring
fring is working on a group video chat implementation for its iOS and Android apps. The update will eventually allow users to chat with up to four participants onscreen at once; fring's developers are allowing users to sign up for a beta version so they can test it out before it's officially available on the App Store.
Group video chats appear to be a bit choppy even in fring's announcement video (which you can view on the next page), but that could be due to any number of factors from the connection speed to the iPhone 4's processor. Thanks to Photo Booth we already know the iPad 2 with its faster A5 processor can display multiple video streams at once without a hitch, so it'll be interesting to see whether the same is true for apps like fring.
fring offered video chatting long before Skype's iOS app enabled it (and even before Apple's FaceTime debuted), so I'm wondering if Skype will follow in fring's footsteps again and enable group video chats in a future update. Personally, I'll be happy if Skype just produces an iPad-native app; the iPhone version feels pretty limited.

Переслать - Rumor: New Final Cut Pro to debut on April 12
According to ProVideoCoalition, Apple is planning on debuting the next version of Final Cut Pro at the Final Cut Pro User Group SuperMeet on April 12. According to PVC, "Apple will be using the Vegas Supermeet to announce the next version of Final Cut Pro. Supposedly, Apple will be taking over the entire event for their announcement, canceling all other sponsors, including AJA, Avid, Canon, BlackMagic, Autodesk and others, who were set to give presentations."
While the FCP SuperMeet does seem to be an odd event for Apple to launch the next version of their professional editing software (because NAB 2011 starts on April 9), the rumors do seem to have credibility because Canon, Avid, and Autodesk have all confirmed that their sponsorships have been canceled because Apple has demanded no one else has the main stage. A Canon spokesperson supposedly confirmed to PVC, "Canon was told last night that Apple has demanded ALL 'lectern' or stage time exclusively." Likewise, Avid told them, "Apple doesn't want anyone to have stage time but them."
There's no word yet on what the next Final Cut Pro will feature, but in February a group of high-profile video editors were supposedly given time with the software. Their reactions to the new FCP were overwhelmingly positive, with one of them saying the next Final Cut Pro is "the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago."

Переслать - Apple granted patent for DisplayPort/Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 dock connector
Apple has been granted a patent for a new type of dock connector, discovered by PatentlyApple. The new dock connector is a "hybrid DisplayPort/USB 3.0 high speed connector. This new and extremely slim connector will work on all iOS devices like the iPod and eventually work its way through Apple's entire hardware lineup," according to the patent-tracking site. While Apple typically files patents for technologies that never see the light of day, PatentlyApple speculates that this new dock connector could be unveiled later this year or in 2012 when Apple adds USB 3.0 ports to their Mac computers.
The patent also suggests that future iOS devices may have Thunderbolt connections since a DisplayPort and Thunderbolt connection are physically similar. Apple added Thunderbolt to the latest MacBook Pros and it's widely expected that all Macs introduced from now on will sport the new port. A combined Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 connector would cover the Mac and PC spectrum -- while all newer Macs are likely to have Thunderbolt ports, most mid-level to low-end PCs will probably only sport USB 3.0 ports.

Переслать - Capcom's free Arcade adds Final Fight, 1943
Capcom has added two more titles to its free Capcom Arcade app that hit the App Store a while ago. First up is the classic beat-em-up Final Fight, and it's a big retro release for Capcom -- they've even changed the app's name and icon just to celebrate. Final Fight's a great game, as you may remember from the days of arcades gone by. As with all of the other titles in Capcom Arcade, you can play three times a day for free, pay a buck to play any of the games ten times a day, or pay a certain amount (currently just a dollar, as all of the titles are on sale) to "buy the arcade machine" and get unlimited play. It's an interesting deal designed to give you something to try out even if you don't want to shell out for the whole collection.
Also, 1943 has also been added to the mix as the sequel to the old WWII style plane top-down shooter. Capcom promises there will be two games added into the app every single month, so stay tuned -- hopefully we'll see even more retro titles in the future.

Переслать - Colbert has an iPad 2, already wants the iPad 3
Stephen Colbert can finally eat and sleep apparently -- he was able to pick up his own iPad 2. And as you can see in the video below, he's thrilled with it. Sure, it's mostly just because it's new (it doesn't really do much his old tablet doesn't do), but his excitement is essentially boundless.
Boundless -- until it hits a boundary. We agree with Stephen: the new iPad 2 sure is great. But, um, won't the iPad 3 be greater?

Переслать - Apple wins appeal in Time Machine, Cover Flow patent ruling
US District Judge Leonard Davis threw out a US$625.5 million patent infringement verdict against Apple involving its Cover Flow, Time Machine and Spotlight technology for the Mac.
In 2008, Mirror Worlds filed a patent infringement lawsuit accusing Apple of infringing on four of the company's patent for a "document stream operating system" and its associated information management system. The lawsuit cited Apple's Cover Flow interface, its backup application Time Machine, and its search application Spotlight. Mirror Worlds received its four patents before it disbanded in 2003.
In October 2010, a judge in East Texas Federal Court sided with Mirror Worlds and awarded the now defunct company $625.5 million in damages ($208.5 million per patent). Apple appealed this ruling and argued that Mirror Worlds' patents were invalid because the company failed to cite prior art and filed the patents incorrectly.
The Texas judge disagreed with Apple's patent claims and upheld Mirror Worlds' patents as valid. In a decision favorable to Apple, however, he ruled that Apple was not liable for damages. Mirror Worlds apparently failed to prove Apple used the same underlying technology for its implementation of Cover Flow, Time Machine and Spotlight. Without this "requisite foundational support," the original lawsuit award was rejected and Apple no longer has to pony up the cash.

Переслать - Apple introduces iAd Gallery app four days late
When next someone asks you, "Hey, what is the top app I should put on my new iPhone? Can you recommend something that will be insanely useful, offer lots of long-term functionality, and really show off my device?"
Consider how much you dislike this person. Then, if they really deserve it, recommend Apple's new iAd Gallery app. This free application offers "Great ads. On-demand. In your pocket." The application allows users to view and interact with Apple's stable of paid advertisements, as if nothing less would be sufficient to demonstrate our complete lack of a life.
This app is really only appropriate for the most, uh, loyal Apple fan. Of course, it's also a way for Apple to potentially nudge/guilt hesitant iAd buyers into joining the club.
That's because iAd Gallery may help sell Apple's fledgling (and some say struggling) service to a broader market. What purpose does this app serve (other than to make people laugh out loud) if it's not to let advertisers review existing ads before dipping their own toes into the water? Sure, existing advertisers can see their ads playing on a real live iDevice, but that's not enough motivation to release a whole appful of them.
The advertisements in iAd Gallery do appear to be broader and more comprehensive than those you may encounter randomly in ad-supported free applications. This wider coverage may allow those potential advertisers to help plan their own campaigns.
Caution: iAd Gallery is rated 12+ for infrequent/mild alcohol, tobacco or drug use, or references.

Переслать - Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak store advertising
Well, that was quick. No sooner than word got out about Toyota's advertising on the unofficial ModMyi jailbreak store for iOS, Apple has reportedly stepped in and asked Toyota to back down. Apparently the advertising company responsible for the theme and buy called up to remove it, and said that Apple had contacted Toyota directly, resulting in Toyota deciding against the promotion to "maintain their good relationship with Apple."
Kyle Matthews, the founder of ModMyi, notes that the deal has been in progress for a while, and actually went up about a month ago, so it appears that only now, as the deal has gotten some press, did Apple show any concern about it. This adds an interesting wrinkle to the already strange relationship between Apple and its unofficial software stores. Apple has generally been forgiving of most jailbreakers, though in the past has come up with some harsher rhetoric. It appears, though this may come as no surprise, that money is the issue. As soon as a larger corporation like Toyota becomes ready to support jailbreakers, that's when Apple starts throwing its weight around.
It's hard to think anyone else as big as Toyota will touch an ad buy like this now -- there's always a chance that another company will go for the sale in spite of Apple's concerns, but the jailbreak audience doesn't seem big enough to really attract another significant client. We'll have to see what happens -- Apple may have killed this trend just as quickly as it started.

Переслать - Nasdaq to diminish Apple's portion of the Nasdaq-100
The Wall Street Journal reports that Nasdaq will drop Apple's profile in its Nasdaq-100 stock index, lowering Apple's share from 20.5% to around 12.3%, more in line with the number of actual Apple shares out there. Apple is one of 81 companies who are seeing their shares lowered by the rebalance, while 19 other companies, including Google and Microsoft, will have their shares increased. The index was last adjusted in this way back in 1998, but back then Apple obviously wasn't nearly as big a company financially as it is now, so Nasdaq is simply adjusting things to bring shares more in line with the actual market.
The changes should take effect on May 2, and Nasdaq does say that it expects some trades to happen as a result of the changes, which may lead to some "instability" in the markets for a short period. But in general, the changes are just to make sure that a huge amount of growth (or failure) on Apple's part doesn't upset the index too much.
As always, we are not financial professionals, and any news about AAPL stock should not be taken as financial advice.

Переслать - Google Books for iOS adds landscape reading, speed boost
Google Books for iOS was introduced late last year and opened the world of Google's two million digital books to iOS owners. The application competed with Apple's iBooks and Amazon's Kindle application but lacked the polish and finesse of these two applications.
This latest version released today kicks it up a notch by adding a landscape mode for eBook reading on your iPad and a find feature that shows specific keyword and phrase matches as you scroll through a book. Several bug fixes and enhancements include a nifty 3D page turning feature on the iPad and an new login feature that lets you easily download eBooks using your Google account. The speed and performance of the overall application has been improved as well. The updated version of the application is available for free and can be downloaded now from the App Store.

Переслать - Consumer Reports ranks iPad top among tablets
Apple's iPad 2 is king of the tablets according to a comparative review released by Consumer Reports (CR) today. The publication's lab evaluated ten of the "most-promising" tablet devices from Apple, Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung, and ViewSonic. The 32 GB iPad 2 with Wi-Fi plus 3G (US$729) scored Excellent in most of the 17 testing criteria, beating the second-ranked Motorola Xoom.
"So far Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced," Paul Reynolds, Electronics Editor at Consumer Reports said in the publication's press release. "However, it's likely we'll see more competitive pricing in tablets as other models begin to hit the market."
Notably, the iPad 2's strongest rival, the Motorola Xoom, tied with Apple's original iPad for second place. Critics admired the Xoom's 10-inch screen and extra conveniences like a built-in memory card reader, support for Adobe Flash content, and 4G wireless upgradability. Meanwhile, the iPad 2 trounced the competition in battery life, surviving 12.2 hours while looping a video clip. The inexpensive Archos 70 Internet Tablet landed at the bottom of the ratings.
The caveat-free, top-ranking results for the iPad 2 are a welcome departure from the publication's recent (and befuddling) stance towards Apple's mobile products. The iPhone 4 from AT&T and Verizon each received CR's best ratings. Even so, the publication recommended avoiding Apple's latest iPhones, citing signal attenuation issues caused by placing a finger over the gap between the device's outer antennas. Rather than revise its testing criteria to account for the "death grip," the independent buying guide simultaneously praised and pummeled the iPhone 4 with an it's-the-best-but-don't-buy-it ranking.
Fortunately, the iPad 2, which doesn't rely on antennas in the same way as its smartphone cousins, won its crown without any tarnishes. It's yet another reason to go out and buy one.

Переслать - Verizon iPhone 4 owners report fewer dropped calls than AT&T customers
ChangeWave conducted a survey of 4,068 wireless customers to determine the difference between Verizon iPhone owners and AT&T iPhone owners. The survey was completed on March 28th and takes into account Verizon owners' initial response to the iPhone's performance on the CDMA network.
The results show that overall, Verizon iPhone owners are as equally as satisfied as their AT&T counterparts with 82% of Verizon owners and 80% of AT&T owners reporting they are very satisfied with their current service. Dropped calls on the two carriers differed greatly with AT&T iPhone customers reporting up to 4.8 percent of dropped calls and Verizon customers coming in with a much lower 1.8 percent.
Over the two-year survey, Verizon's overall dropped call rate has fell from 2.7 percent in 2008 to 1.4 percent in March 2011. AT&T, on the other hand, has shown an increase from 3.6 percent in 2008 to the current 4.6 percent in March 2011. This 4.6 percent is encouraging and shows that AT&T is trying to address this problem. Though its dropped call rate is higher than 2008, this rate is slowly falling down from a high of 6% reported by AT&T iPhone owners in September 2010.

Переслать - Paper iPad 2 sells out in Malaysia for use in afterlife rituals
It appears that Apple isn't the only company having trouble keeping up with the huge demand for the iPad 2.
Throughout Asia, many ethnic Chinese individuals are celebrating the Qingming festival. During this festival, living relatives honor their dead ancestors by cleaning their grave sites and burning paper replicas of useful and high-ticket items. The idea is that by burning the faux items, they're made available for the dearly departed to use in the afterlife.
Usually, the paper replicas include items like shoes, fancy clothing, designer purses, and cars. But a Malaysian shopkeeper reports in a Reuters news post that paper iPads -- both first and second generation -- have been flying off of the shelves of his prayer item store. Jeffrey Te had received 300 iPad 2 replicas from China which sold out quickly. The paper iPads are sold with a capacity of 888 GB, that number being considered a favorable one in Chinese culture. The price tag on the iPads? About a dollar.
The store also sells some amazingly realistic looking iPhone 4s, as well as replicas of devices made by other manufacturers. As among the living, however, not everyone in the afterlife may need or want a high-tech gadget, so the more traditional items like paper sofas and chests full of fake paper money are still big items in Te's store. There's video on the next page.

Переслать - Korean rumor puts iPhone 5 release in June (updated)
Update: The Loop remains convinced this will not happen.
TUAW has seen an uptick in the number of rumors making their way around the blogosphere lately, purporting to know when the iPhone 5 will finally arrive. The latest is from Korea, where ETNews is reporting that the fifth-generation device is going to appear in June at an event to be held after WWDC.
The rumor doesn't hold water when held up to Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer's recent comment that 8 MP Sony digital camera sensors would be delayed getting to Apple due to earthquake damage at a plant in Japan. Then again, Sony supplying camera sensors to Apple may be a misunderstanding anyway.
ETNews also states that two South Korean telecom companies, KT and SK Telecom, will be getting the iPhone 5 soon after launch. That's contrary to common shipping patterns for Apple products, in which South Korea gets products well after launch. For example, the iPhone 4 just made it to South Korea on March 16.
It's also rare for Apple to hold a press event for a new product so close to the Worldwide Developer's Conference. Most of us here at TUAW are treating this as a hopeful rumor, and we're holding out for a September release of the latest iPhone.

Переслать - Taking Your iPhoto '11 to the Max: A power guide to Apple's photo app
iPhoto '11 is an easy Mac app to begin using and play with, but a difficult one to master.
In his newest book for Apress, TUAW blogger Michael Grothaus takes his knowledge of iPhoto '11 and presents it in such a way that anyone can learn to use the app not only for organizing and editing their photo library, but also for creating albums and keepsakes or sharing those photos.
Part of the Apress Technology In Action series, Taking Your iPhoto '11 to the Max is a 241-page illustrated guide to the app. Available in both paper (US$29.99 SRP) and ebook ($20.99) formats, Michael's expertise as a photographer and writer shines in the book.
Michael begins the book at the point where most new Mac users stop -- they figure out how to import their photos into iPhoto and then use the app as the electronic equivalent of a shoe box to store their pictures. Michael begins educating readers at this point in a very understandable way, taking them through the steps of marking and searching their photos using keywords, and describing the detailed information that can be found in EXIF data imported from the digital camera.

Переслать - From coffee table books to iPad apps: publisher ditching paper books
While many of those involved in the traditional dead-tree publishing business insist on using 15th century technology, at least one is leading the way into the 21st century.
Nicholas Calloway, a successful publisher of glossy, expensive coffee-table books (including Madonna's Sex) is "betting the ranch" that apps are the future.
He founded his company in 1980, but it was while watching Pixar's Toy Story in 1995 that he recognized a whole new form of storytelling that was "...going to change the world," he told Reuters. "We stopped thinking of books as the sole vehicle for our products and we thought more of core intellectual property that could be executed across many different media."
Now his authors are partners in projects, not simply recipients of royalties. He's renamed his company Callaway Digital Arts, and all projects start with iPhone/iPad apps, including (amongst others) Martha Stewart Makes Cookies and The Monster at the End of This Book (for iPad).
It would be great to see more publishers taking the same route but, as reader's of Joe Konrath's now famous Newbie's Guide to Publishing blog will know, most are still in love with the dead-tree business.

Переслать - iPhone 4 overheating continues to plague some users
Reports are coming in of iPhone 4s overheating and experiencing severe battery problems after updating to iOS 4.3.1.
Some users started having problems with the iOS 4.3 update, and it hasn't been resolved with the 4.3.1 update. The problem has been resolved for a few users by removing stale sync threads in Mail or by tracking down other apps, including Ping, which are sending or receiving large quantities of data while the iPhone is in standby.
Apple issued a warning about iPhones overheating due to external temperatures back in 2009, although this time no users report seeing the famous "iPhone needs to cool down..." image yet.

Переслать - Radio reporter uses iPhone 4 for all of his work
There's a very cool story over on the MediaShift pages of the PBS website about how a radio reporter has replaced almost all of his bulky radio equipment and with an iPhone 4.
Neal Augenstein started working for WTOP in Washington 14 years ago, when just his mobile phone weighed as much as a bowling bag, he says. Since then, the size of equipment has shrunk, and now he does almost all of his reporting with nothing more than his iPhone and a few other pieces of kit -- some of them homemade.
Augenstein says, "with the Apple iPhone 4 and several apps, I can produce intricate audio and video reports, broadcast live, take and edit photos, write web content and distribute it through social media from a single device."
He uses the VC Audio Pro app to edit his audio and the same company's 1stVideo app to edit video captured on his iPhone. He often even uses the iPhone's built-in microphone after the Blue Mikey model he used with his old iPhone 3GS wasn't compatible with the new phone. Photos come courtesy of the built-in camera, which he edits by simply zooming and cropping in his Camera Roll then taking a screenshot to upload.
He also carries an iPad to take notes in press conferences while his iPhone is on a press conference podium -- supported by a regular mike stand with a bit of foam padding.
You can see Neal in action here doing an interview with his iPhone, and you can listen to some of his audio via the station's "As Heard on WTOP" pages here. It's impressive how he's reduced his equipment down to such basics, and it's also impressive that the iPhone 4 can produce broadcast-quality media. Good work, chap!

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Van Pershing
As the App Store has matured, so have the apps on it -- many iOS games today are complicated, deep affairs that require strategy and finesse. But sometimes you just want to kill zombies, and that's what Van Pershing is all about. The title is a straight-up side-scrolling shooter. All you have to do in the game is move along, shoot a variety of weapons forward or backwards at different monsters and collect the loot that drops without dying. That's it. The action's simple, but the graphics are well-done, and there's enough variety and upgrades to the weapons to keep it interesting as a simple arcade game.
There is one major issue: later in the game, the upgrades don't quite come fast enough to stay alive, and unfortunately, there's no default weapon or attack to use; once you're out of ammo with your various guns, you basically have to run for it and hope to survive. It'd be nice to introduce a little more skill to the game with some basic attack that you could use to get by enemies, even when you're in trouble.
But until that point, the game's fun and well-designed, with 40 different levels and a nice cartoony style. It also has full Game Center integration. There's a free version to try out if you're so inclined, but the full game is just a buck anyway. Give it a look if you just want a little straightforward shooting action.

Переслать - Magic Catalog brings free books to your iBooks or Kindle collection
Most people know that there is a free Kindle app for iOS that will let you read books from Amazon's Kindle store. Apple also offers a free iBooks app. Fewer people have heard of Project Gutenberg, where you can download over 30,000 free books, and fewer still have heard of the Magic Catalog from FreeKindleBooks.org.
The "Magic Catalog" isn't where Harry Potter shops -- it's a "book" containing nothing except links to other books. You can use the search feature of your favorite e-book reader to look for books; with a few taps, you can have the new book on your iOS device without ever needing to go through iTunes and without spending a penny.
The easy way
If you already have the iBooks or Kindle apps installed, simply go to Magic Catalog on your iOS device and tap the appropriate link for whichever app you are using (MOBI Edition for Kindle, EPUB Edition for iBooks).
The slightly harder way
If, for some reason, you'd prefer to download the books to your computer and transfer them to your iOS device (or if you already have .epub, .mobi, or other e-books on your computer), you can do so using iTunes. If you have the Kindle app installed, it will appear under the "File Sharing" section in the "apps" tab, and you can add books there.
You may notice that iBooks does not appear in the "File Sharing" section. To transfer books to iBooks, simply drag to the "Library" section of your iTunes library (see this page at Apple.com for more details).
Two minor flaws
Kindle: When using the Magic Catalog with the Kindle app, you'll find one glitch in the process. When you tap on a book in the catalog, the Kindle app opens a blank page with an arrow at the top left. You have to tap on that arrow to open the page in Safari, which will then show you a link to open the book in the Kindle app. Then when you go back to the Kindle app, you have to tap the "Done" button on the top right in order to see the new book. It's a minor annoyance, at worst.
Kindle and iBooks: When you are on the web page to download the book, you will not see the name of the book; you'll see something like "pg23.mobi" followed by the size and a button to open the book in the Kindle app (or iBooks if you have the EPUB version). Once you open the book in the appropriate application, it will show the correct name.

Переслать - Photo Stream feature hints found in iOS 4.3
Possible confirmation of a Photo Stream service in iOS 5 has come after users spotted hidden references to the service inside the current version, iOS 4.3. We wrote about it a while ago here, but now a 9to5Mac reader has come across it while using a third-party app to browse his iPhone 4 photo albums.
The expectation is that Photo Stream will work for your photos in Photos.app the same way Playlists work for music in iTunes, allowing you to send albums of photos to friends. Its background appearance in iOS 4.3 may indicate that it was pulled at the last moment and will instead be part of the major iOS 5 upgrade, which is rumored to be out this fall.
Hopefully, Photo Stream will indeed make it into iOS 5. Sharing your photo albums via a revamped MobileMe with your friends and family, all in an easy-to-use Apple fashion, would be a great feature.

Minimalists looking for a task manager should take a closer look at TaskPaper for OS X, which is now on sale at US$4.99, a $25 discount off its normal $29.99. The app recently launched in the Mac App Store, and Hog Bay Software dropped the price for a limited time to celebrate TaskPaper's debut. This $5 pricing will be available until Friday, April 8.
Developed by the same company that released WriteRoom, TaskPaper is a text editor-based task manager that mimics a handwritten list. If you are inspired to add an item to your growing to-do list, you only have to launch the app, type in your thoughts and hit Return to add it to your list. We have covered TaskPaper since version 1.0 and have been pleased with its simplicity and ease of use. If you have any interest in the application, grab it now before its price goes back up on Friday.

Переслать - MLB.com CEO Bob Bowman talks about selling content on the iPhone
Major League Baseball Advanced Media is one of the most powerful developers on the App Store -- every spring, when the new version of the MLB app arrives, the company picks up a sizable chunk of income just from the mobile app, not to mention the subscription service that fuels the live game streaming. Bob Bowman runs the company, and All Things Digital has a nice long interview with him about the app market and how Major League Baseball has taken advantage of mobile.
Straight off the bat (pun intended, sorry), he says that the company has seen a major difference between Android and iOS users: "The iPhone and iPad user is interested in buying content ... that's one of the reasons they bought the device. The Android buyer is different." That's interesting to hear -- I've heard exactly the opposite from the makers of Pocket Legends, that Android users were more willing to spend in-app money than iOS users. We're likely just talking about two different audiences here rather than different types of handset owners.
Bowman also says MLB is "living with" the 30 percent cut from Apple on its subscription income, but hopes that "over time, the margin will fall from 30 percent." That's a hope for a lot of subscription sellers on the App Store, and most of those are much smaller than the base MLB has built-up for itself on iDevices.

Переслать - EyeTV for iOS 1.2.3 released, introduces AirPlay support
Today, Elgato released version 1.2.3 of its iOS EyeTV software. Now available for download from iTunes, the US$4.99 EyeTV app finally adds the highly-requested AirPlay support so many customers have been looking for.
EyeTV's iOS app works with your home computer, allowing you to view programs recorded by hardware connected to your Macintosh. TUAW has extensively covered EyeTV's hardware/software tuner solutions.
The new AirPlay feature allows you to transmit both live and recorded TV from your iPhone or iPad and route that video to Apple TV (or to third-party receiver applications that support the AirPlay protocol).
Now you can enjoy your TV recordings on the road, not only on your relatively small iPhone or iPad screen but also on any Apple TV/AirPlay receiver, with their large monitor and HDTV support.

Переслать - Pandora says grand jury looking into Apple and Android apps
One of the most popular music services, Pandora, has revealed that a federal grand jury is examining information sharing by mobile apps.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Pandora was served with a subpoena to produce documents relating to "information sharing processes of certain applications that run on the Apple and Android mobile platforms." A Pandora spokesperson says it does not "believe the company is a target of the investigation," and added "we believe that similar subpoenas were issued on an industry-wide basis to the publishers of numerous other smartphone applications." That would make sense -- if a grand jury were seeking information on what's shared in iOS, it would look at information from multiple developers, including Pandora.
This latest action follows reports of a December class action suit against Apple and a number of App Store developers over the sharing of personal information with advertisers. Since grand jury proceedings are secret, it can't be determined if the two actions are related.

Переслать - Air Display for Mac: Turn another Mac into an extended display
One very popular and fun iPhone / iPad app that I love to use is Avatron Software's Air Display. As we described in a First Look back in May of 2010, Air Display turns an iOS device into a small wireless monitor that can be used to display app windows from a Mac or Windows computer.
Now Avatron has made Air Display even more useful by creating a Mac app to do the same thing. Air Display for Mac (US$19.99 in the Mac App Store) is a bit more expensive than its iOS sibling, but it's also more capable than the mobile device version -- especially if you have a second Mac with a large screen.
Similar to Air Display for iOS, Air Display turns a Mac into a wireless display for extending the desktop of your other Mac or Windows computer. Air Display is available in the Mac App Store, and needs to be installed on the Mac that you want to turn into a secondary display. You then need to visit the Avatron website to download the host software for your primary computer. As noted, that computer can be either a Mac (running Snow Leopard) or a Windows PC (running XP, Vista or 7). You do have to reboot the host computer during the installation process. The same host software works with both iOS and Mac extended displays.

Переслать - Toyota puts up theme, ads on ModMyi jailbreak repository
This is kind of a weird story, but definitely an interesting one. Word is going around that Toyota, of all brands, might be advertising on the ModMyi repository. Supposedly there's an official Scion interface theme on sale in the jailbreak store, and there are ads for the car manufacturer running throughout. That's fascinating -- traditionally, the jailbreak scene has been extremely independent, sitting as it does in a relatively gray legal area, but Toyota is a serious client to have when it comes to advertising.
In fact, it's exactly the kind of client that Apple would like for its iAd program, which has been suffering a bit lately. Of course, it's probably way cheaper to put up some ads on ModMyi and even create a free theme than it would be to buy into iAds, but that's still ad revenue on an Apple device that the company isn't getting, so we can't see why it would be happy about that one. If this is a trend that continues to grow, it could have a serious effect on jailbreak or unofficial app marketplaces.
Note that the original reporting on this story said that it was the Cydia store that was getting the sponsorship, which Cydia founder Jay Freeman pointed out was incorrect.

Переслать - iPad 2 ship times decrease to 2-3 weeks
Shipping times on Apple's website for new iPad 2 orders have decreased to 2-3 weeks as of this morning. That's a far cry from the 4-5 weeks that the store stated shortly after the iPad 2 went on sale. The new shipping times apply to all 18 models of the iPad -- white, black, Wi-Fi, AT&T and Verizon. It also appears that the 2-3 week shipping time is universal across Apple's online stores worldwide as UK and Australian stores, among others, are showing similar 2-3 week shipping times.

Переслать - Facebook app is updated; now you can unfriend while mobile
Facebook has updated its popular iOS app today. The 3.4 version of the app adds several new features, the foremost of which lets you unfriend people right from your iPhone. Besides making it easier to get rid of those annoying "friends," the updated app also features a new map view for Places, the ability to check in to Events that you're attending, an improved News Feed and an improved notifications UI.
I was also going to include a screen shot of the new map view in Places, but as of the time of this writing, the Facebook app keeps crashing when I try to view the map.
For those of you holding out hope that each new Facebook app updated might bring universal compatibility to the app, you're going to have to hope a little longer as Facebook shows no signs of bringing an iPad app to market in the near future.

Переслать - AViiQ Smart Case for iPad 2 works with your Smart Cover
AViiQ is an accessories manufacturer that loves to do things with aluminum. TUAW reviewed the AViiQ Portable Laptop Stand last October, which is a slender folding wedge of thin aluminum that props up your laptop and takes up little or no space in your bag. Now the company is putting some of that design and manufacturing expertise to use with a new iPad 2 product.
The AViiQ Smart Case for iPad 2 (US$49.99) is now available for pre-order and looks like a winner. Unlike the Yoobao Products Executive Leather folio case reviewed by TUAW's Mel Martin yesterday, the AViiQ Smart Case is meant to complement the iPad 2 and Smart Cover, not hide it.
The case is made of 1.5 mm thick anodized aluminum in all the right spots to provide the ultimate in strong protection, while using other materials where necessary to keep the Smart Case transparent for wireless access. It comes in colors that precisely match Apple's Smart Covers, or you could mix up the colors for an extra impact.
AViiQ offers a 30-day money back guarantee on its products, so if you don't like the case you can get a full refund. Knowing the quality build on its other products, I don't think you'll be returning the Smart Case. We'll have a full hands-on review later this month.

Переслать - Financial Times hopes to avoid iTunes subscription rules
Despite a few objections after Apple announced its subscription setup for iOS apps, the service is underway -- developers and publishers can sell content subscriptions through the App Store, and of course Apple gets a 30 percent cut. One publisher is still holding out: the UK's Financial Times still hopes to sell its own subscriptions on the iPad, without giving Apple its due. The publisher already has 590k subscribers on its website, and is reportedly in negotiations with Apple right now to keep all of those for itself rather than sharing any part of them with Apple.
We'll have to wish FT good luck with that as it seems unlikely that Apple would allow separate solutions into the App Store for different publications, not to mention any solutions that don't include Apple getting its cut. Plus, the more publications that do agree to Apple's terms just creates a stronger "negotiating" position for sites like Financial Times to contend with. FT may come up with some sort of deal on its own, but as far as I can tell, Apple has no reason to back down from its subscription plans.

Переслать - The Ultramods record entire album in GarageBand for iPad
We all know that Apple's GarageBand for iPad 2 makes it incredibly easy for anyone to make and record music. Now The Ultramods have gone and created an entire album using the 8-track recording capability of GarageBand.
Most of the songs on the album Underwear Party (iTunes Store link) are NSFW, including one appropriately titled "NSFW." According to the band's website, they specialize in "pervy pop punk and technologically obsessed new wave." The group, made up of musicians Bunny and Coco Ultramod, used only the instruments included in the iPad app to record the dozen tunes on the album.
The Ultramod's manifesto is "fast, cheap and out-of-control," and you've got to love their thinking even if you hate their music: "Here's an iPad, here's an Internet connection. Now make an album."
Note to readers: I'll be off the site for the next few days, recording my first album.
Just kidding.

Переслать - Apple expands App Store trademark in Europe
Two filings published by the European Trademark Office last week suggest the battle for the term "App Store" will expand to new product categories and new turf. Patently Apple reports that the first request from Apple, filed on March 30, expands the use of the term "App Store" from four international classes to ten. The second application, filed on March 31, covers the App Store graphic (much like the image pictured here).
Apple submitted its trademark applications in Europe as Microsoft filed its second objection to Apple's registration for the term "App Store" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Apple also recently filed a lawsuit against retail giant Amazon for naming its new mobile software marketplace "Appstore." Microsoft, Amazon and other software makers may now face similar challenges using the words "App Store" in European markets.
Aside from renewing its duels with Microsoft and Amazon on a new continent, Apple's latest filings in Europe expand the "App Store" trademark into six new product categories, like games, electronic publications, educational products and hardware. Notably, one of the new product classes -- International Class 36 for those keeping score -- refers to financial affairs, credit card services, debit card services, home banking and various methods for conducting electronic transactions. Patently Apple observes this class of products goes beyond typical online transactions for buying apps and music. Could Apple's attempt to expand its "App Store" trademark into financial products hint at new electronic wallet services tied to its mobile devices?
Both of Apple's new trademark applications for the term "App Store" and the associated graphic are currently marked as "under examination" by the European Trademark Office.

Переслать - Shooting at Apple Store in San Diego leaves one robbery suspect dead
NBC's San Diego affiliate is reporting that an early-morning attempted theft at the Apple Store at Otay Ranch Town Center turned deadly when one of the alleged participants in the smash-and-grab attempt was shot and killed by a security guard.
Police told the TV station that the incident occurred right before 7 AM Pacific Time this morning, before the store was open. The store manager was already working inside the store when three suspects smashed the glass doors at the front of the store; they were confronted by the guard. The guard told police that the exchange of fire began when one of the suspects produced a handgun.
The three would-be robbers crashed their car nearby in an attempt to escape. One male suspect was shot and killed by the guard; the other two suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested shortly afterward in a nearby residential area. Store employees identified the surviving suspects as the same people who had attempted to break into the store.
Apple stores that maintain storefronts on public-access streets, unlike those within enclosed malls, are frequently subject to glass-break theft. In 2009, an employee at the Clarendon store in the Washington, DC suburbs was shot and injured during a robbery attempt.
Attempts to reach the Otay Ranch store by telephone were unsuccessful.
Thanks to Lee for the heads-up.

Переслать - MacBook Air projected to earn $2.2 billion per year
Analyst Mark Moskowitz with J.P. Morgan predicts the MacBook Air will be a $2.2 billion cash cow for Apple in 2011. The MacBook Air exploded onto the scene in late 2010 with a smaller form factor and a reasonable base price. Moskowitz notes that Apple sold 420,000 units in the last few months of 2010, a 333 percent year-over-year increase. The diminutive MacBook Air accounted for 10 percent of total Mac units sold and 15 percent of its notebook sales.
Supply chain estimates suggest the MacBook Air continues to be a strong performer for Apple in 2011. Sources suggest Apple has doubled its February orders for the MacBook Air in response to unexpectedly strong demand. If Apple is able to maintain this level of demand and keep its base price at $1000, Apple can easily beat analysts early sales estimates and accrue $2.2 billion in revenue from this small but sweet notebook.

Переслать - AT&T hikes early upgrade prices
Mobile phone carriers have always had early upgrade pricing. In other words, if you purchase a phone with a two-year contract but want to get a newer model after a year, you generally pay a surcharge to do so.
Over the weekend, AT&T quietly raised its early upgrade pricing by US$50 across the board. In a memo to store employees outed on Android Central, iPhone early upgrade pricing jumped from $249 to $299 for an 8 GB iPhone 3GS, from $399 to $449 for a 16 GB iPhone 4, and from $499 to $549 for a 32 GB iPhone 4.
AT&T isn't just picking on iPhones, though -- the increase is for all smartphones. For no commitment and one year commitment pricing, iPhones are exempt from AT&T's pricing gun. No commitment pricing for other smartphones will go up $50, while making a one year commitment to another smartphone will cost a whopping $150 more. iPhone prices for no commitment or one year commitments remain the same, giving Apple's device a bit of a price advantage over competing (i.e., Android) smartphones on short commitment deals.

Переслать - Video mirroring on the original iPad
iPad 2 owners have one cool feature that can't be replicated on the original iPad -- the ability to mirror everything that's on the screen onto another display. Or should I say "had one cool feature," since 18-year-old Belgian student Ian Bauters has figured out a hack that enables video mirroring on a jailbroken original iPad.
As with the video mirroring on the iPad 2, this works with both the Apple VGA Adapter and the Digital AV (HDMI) Adapter. Bauters notes that despite the original iPad having less RAM and a less-capable CPU, he hasn't seen any issues with the mirroring hack he developed.
There's a video that shows the mirroring in action on the next page, and you can get full step-by-step instructions on how to enable this feature from the Nature's Eye Studio website. Remember kids, jailbreaking is legal and awesome -- but it is done at your own risk.

Переслать - iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak available, but not for iPad 2
The iPhone dev team released the latest version of its PwnageTool for iOS 4.3.1. Thanks to the work of Stefan Esser, both the PwnageTool and redsn0w now provide an untethered jailbreak for this latest version of iOS. This untethered jailbreak is compatible with all 4.3.1 devices except for the iPad 2, which is not susceptible to either the limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.
If you own an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, iPad 1G or AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only), then head over to the dev team's blog and download the tools to jailbreak your iOS device.
As always, follow the directions carefully and heed their warning about unlocking. If you use ultrasn0w for unlocking, you may have to pass on this jailbreak until the team updates the unlock tool to support 4.3.1.
