Переслать - 13 reasons why software is not free
When Steve Jobs announced the App Store, he made it clear that Apple would be happy to take on the costs of hosting and distributing free apps. I remember thinking at the time that he actually seemed to be pushing the idea of free apps.
Free apps helped launch the iOS App Store into having stratospheric numbers of available apps, and probably pushed down the overall price of many other apps as well. But there's no such thing as a free lunch, even in the App Store(s). Apps take time and skill to be developed, and one of the unfortunate side-effects of the App Store pricing is that many people now expect apps to be free or low-priced. When I was using Palm software on my Treo, I regularly paid $10-$20 for apps, including games. With very few exceptions, most iOS apps are priced well below that.
This is good for everyone, right? Apple gets to boast about a huge number of available titles, users get access to an incredible library of inexpensive software literally at their fingertips, and developers get... um... developers get... noticed? A fleeting chance for fame? The hope that they might have the "winning the lottery"-type luck of an app like Angry Birds and sell millions of copies of their $1 app?

Переслать - Macworld 2011: Kanex brings full HDMI capability to Macs
This morning I spoke with Jessica Cole from Kanex, a two-year-old company which offers many products that add HDMI capability to your Mac.
The current generation of their line adds audio pass-through via HDMI. The offerings range between the iAdapt HDMI V2 (US $29.95) a small box with that plugs into Mini DisplayPort and allows you to plug in an HDMI cable, giving you audio support and 1080p video to a TV, projector or anything else with an HDMI input. I was shown the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI 10-foot cable ($44.95) which is sold exclusively at Apple stores and contains a ten foot HDMI cable to so you don't have to buy and plug in your own. "We're every excited to have our product as an Apple Store exclusive" said Jessica (whose favorite three apps are Facebook, Pandora and Facegoo).
The most interesting product that I found was the Kanex HD ($149.99), a magical box that gives you the ability to connect the HDMI output of a Blu-Ray player, PlayStation 3 or XBOX 360 and have resolution of up to 1920x1200 appear on your iMac 27". This lets you use your 27" iMac display as a full HD display device. The Kanex HD is controlled by the iMac keyboard. A press of Command-F2 switches the display between the computer and the HDMI device and both sound and brightness are controlled with the usual keys on the Apple Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard.

Переслать - Verizon confirms iPhone pre-orders for 3 AM on February 3
Verizon is sending out emails to its customers confirming the details on the iPhone 4 pre-order. As rumored, pre-orders will begin promptly at 3 AM on February 3 for existing Verizon customers. The email points customers to an ordering page that is not yet available. The official iPhone page on Verizon has also been updated with a countdown timer and an invitation for customers to come back in five days to join the iPhone buying party.
Details on the purchasing process are not provided but, you will most likely have to log into your My Verizon account to confirm your eligibility as a Verizon Wireless customer. If you do not have a My Verizon account, you may want to sign up for one beforehand. You don't want to miss the pre-order because you were fumbling with the account setup. The quantity of iPhones available for Verizon's customers in this pre-order is limited, so you better get your game face on and prepare to do some early morning ordering.Verizon confirms iPhone pre-orders for 3 AM on February 3 originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 20:45:00 EST. Переслать - Papershow for Teachers introduced at Macworld 2011
Papershow made a big splash last year at Macworld during its introduction, and since then has apparently sold fairly well in business circles (the product is now being sold in Staples as well). This year, Papershow is introducing a new edition styled for education applications, called Papershow for Teachers, that features not only a few upgrades to the functionality, but a few targeted extras meant specifically for the classroom.
Just like the previous edition, Papershow for Teachers has a special pen (with a camera built into it), and a Bluetooth-enabled USB drive that hooks right into your Mac with all the necessary software pre-installed on it. The pen's camera can only be used with special paper (a pad is included with the package, and you can of course buy more) that has a series of dots on it to tell the app where and when you're drawing on the screen. So very easily, anything written on the special paper gets translated up to the screen.
That's the basic functionality, but a printed toolbar on the paper adds a lot more. By "pressing buttons" on the printed toolbar, the pen can change colors, change shapes, or even do things like pull up graphics or draw shapes on screen. The new teacher edition includes an extended toolbar with even more functions -- teachers can now pull up a virtual calculator on screen, and even do things like draw an angle and then ask the software to calculate exactly what it is. Any images created with the app can be exported out to email or PDF, so teachers can share notes with their students right away.Continue reading Papershow for Teachers introduced at Macworld 2011

Переслать - Apple job posting suggests NFC capability for iPad, iPhone
Thanks to Apple's job board, we may have more evidence that a future version of the iPhone and iPad may include Near Field Communication technology. A recent job listing is seeking a HW test engineer with experience in embedded systems and knowledge of various technologies including RFID. Engadget notes that the listing was changed in the past 24 hours and the RFID in the job listing has ben replaced with RF.
Another recent job listing is seeking a manager for a global payment platform. Each individual will "contribute to the analysis and development of new payment types and processes for the various business units" which include iTunes, the online Apple store and Apple retail stores. The listing does not explicitly mention NFC, but one payment type new to the U.S. and gaining momentum is NFC.
After lagging behind areas like Japan where NFC technology is ubiquitous, mobile payments using Near Field Communication is poised to take off here in the U.S. Three of four of the major wireless carriers, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, are banding together to form a venture named Isis. Isis will be a nationwide commercial network that permits mobile payments via NFC-enable smarpthones and Discover's payment infrastructure. To compete with this carrier-driven endeavor, Apple could establish its own payment network that uses iOS devices and your iTunes account to make wireless purchases. Apple could turn the growing mobile payments market upside down if they could implement such a system on a large scale.

Переслать - iConnectivity presents iConnectMIDI at Macworld 2011
I stopped by the iConnectivity booth here at Macworld because I'd heard about a zero-latency MIDI-to-iOS hub they were releasing. As you'll see in the video below -- at least for musicians with MIDI elements in their kit -- it was worth the stop! Using CoreMIDI (iOS 4.2 only), the iConnectMIDI unit can provide a connection between multiple (up to 8) MIDI sources (both legacy DIN and USB->MIDI) and your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or even a Mac or Windows desktop. In the demo they set up, there were several controllers all playing different instruments through a third-party iPad app (Music Studio, US $14.99), with an additional iPod touch controlling pitch bend on the bass through its accelerometer. Pretty neat.
The unit will ship in April for under $200, and we'll be bringing you a hands-on review in February. More information on the device can be found at the iConnectMIDI website.

Переслать - Macworld 2011: Dolly Drive syncs Time Machine to the cloud, creates bootable backup
We're finding many useful solutions here at Macworld Expo, and among them is Dolly Drive. This new solution (they just launched this week) offers encrypted Time Machine sync to the cloud and even create a bootable version of the local drive you've been using for Time Machine thus far. I spoke with Anthony about the product, how it works and what the future holds.
There are three interesting things about Dolly Drive. First, it allows Time Machine to behave just like Time Machine. The primary difference is that your backups live out in the cloud instead of locally. The benefits are obvious. Let's say you're at a meeting in the field, only to realize that an important file is corrupt or missing entirely. If it lives on an external drive back in your home or office, you're out of luck. Dolly Drive lets you restore it from the cloud, using Time Machine's familiar UI, getting you back in business.
Check for more and our video of Dolly Drive in action after the break.

Переслать - Macworld 2011: Expressive helps the speech impaired learn and communicate
Speech therapist Barbrara Fernandez founded Smarty-Ears apps last January and has since created over 15 apps for the field. I spoke to her about Expressive (US $29.95) an augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) app that at first seems similar to the much more expensive Proloquo2Go, but it serves two purposes.
Like most AAC apps or devices, it allows those without the power of speech due to Autism, Downs Syndrome or even temporary verbal problems to communicate. Tapping on categorized symbols allow one to build phrases that are spoken. The app contains 450 pre-set symbols and more can be added.
The second purpose of the app is to teach language and the relationship between symbols and words. Many children have a limited vocabulary and too many unfamiliar symbols would be confusing and overwhelming. "You can start out and delete everything and slowly build the vocabulary and specifically design the application to meet the needs of a student. I think that's the main concept here." Expressive helps with "limited expressive language communication skills" so it's appropriate of all levels of communication disorders.
Expressive is meant to be used by speech therapists in conjunction with parents to build a child's vocabulary and communication skills. In its simplest iteration, you would start with a noun. When that has been learned, an instructor can odd modifying words and build up from there. Although it may sound simple, seeing a picture of a ball and understanding that it represents all balls may not be obvious for some. There is an edit mode where symbols can be added or deleted and a user mode that doesn't allow changes. Without this a child could inadvertently delete everything.Continue reading Macworld 2011: Expressive helps the speech impaired learn and communicate

Переслать - Retro iPhone case adds Gordon Gekko style
Miss out on living in the 1980's with the big hair and the white-washed jeans? Don't fret -- now you can bring a little bit of 80's flash to 2011 with this Gordon Gekko-style iPhone case from Thumbs Up. Brought to our attention by Gizmodo, this "80's Phone" iPhone case is carefully designed to make your slim and sleek device a large, bulky conversation piece capable of making your acquaintances believe you are a time traveler from the past -- or simply the exact opposite of an early adopter.
While many clever iPhone cases have been making the rounds lately, like this Apple Newton case or this Etch-a-Sketch one, the "80's Phone" one takes the cake for me as a specialty case because it's modeled after phones that people actually used 20-30 years ago. Priced at around US $20 it would be a rather funny gag gift for your favorite iPhone owner, but after living through the 80's and still having nightmares about phones that big, I myself may have to stick to one of the new iPhone cases our own Victor Agreda, Jr. saw at CES a few weeks ago.

Переслать - Boxhead for iPad exclusive preview video
We're on the floor at Macworld Expo this week, and I had a chance to talk with Dave Swartz of Medl Mobile. Dave shared an exclusive look at an upcoming version of his popular zombie-smashing game, Boxhead. We recently gave away some copies of the gory fun, and you can check out a free Flash version here.
This update adds something readers have been requesting: new and better weapons. As you progress, you'll unlock cool new zombie-killing tools like an uzi, a rocket launcher, grenades and even an air strike for when things get really hairy.
You're free to switch weapons at will while you play (those that you've unlocked, of course). I can tell you that the grenades are very satisfying to use. This update will also include some new bad guys and a few other surprises that we can't share with you just yet.
Boxhead fans will certainly enjoy it, and David tells us that you can look for it in the App Store in the first or second week of February.Continue reading Boxhead for iPad exclusive preview video

Переслать - Average iPhone owner has 108 apps, spends 84 minutes a day using them
A survey of the 1,000 iOS devices that synchronize with Appsfire's mobile app discovery and sharing platform reveal some interesting statistics about app usage by its iOS owners. Summarized in an infographic, the compiled statistics show that most of its iOS users prefer native apps to web apps.
The average user spends 84 minutes a day using on-device applications and a mere ten minutes on the web using web-based applications. Each iOS owner has, on average, 108 applications installed on their device. Of these applications, 20 are shipped with the operating system and 88 are installed from the App Store.
Breaking it down even further, Appsfire suggests that 58% of installed applications are free, 23% are paid and 19% are the default apps on the handset. Of these apps, the average Appsfire user spends 10% of their time on telephony and 47% of their time using other apps like Angry Birds, Instagram and more.
While the results are compelling, they represent a subset of users who are focused on finding and using applications. Take a look at the infographic after the break and let us know in the comments if you fit into this profile.

Переслать - Apple pushing its at-home advisor program to college students
Apple is reportedly boosting its efforts to recruit college students for its college advisor program by passing out flyers on college and university campuses. As an Apple At-Home advisor, you receive a free iMac, full benefits and are paid more than $10 per hour to work 16 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week in the summer. Best of all, you get to work from the comfort of your home and on a schedule that fits your lifestyle. Oh, and that employee discount on all Apple products is a nice perk as well.
To be eligible for this program, you must be enrolled in college and maintain a GPA of 2.7. Tech savviness is a plus as you will be helping customers who call into AppleCare and need technical support for their Apple software or hardware. Patience and a sense of humor are also helpful as you will be handling a variety of questions from skilled and not-so-skilled customers.Apple pushing its at-home advisor program to college students originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 16:00:00 EST. Переслать - Hon Hai to expand retail chain, open 500 Apple licensed stores in Asia
A report out of Digitimes suggests that Cybermart, a retail arm of Hon Hai which also owns Foxconn, has recently received approval as an Apple-licensed retailer in the Asia-pacific region. The retailer intends to sell Apple products in up to 500 new stores planned for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Cybermart will open seven to eight stores in 2011, starting with its first store in Tianjin, China which will open on April 1, 2011.
These retail stores will complement the 20 stores Apple is planning to open in China during 2011. While the Apple Stores will form the hub of company's Chinese operations, Cybermart's retail chain and household name will help Apple expand its presence in the growing Asian market. The retailer is known for its selection of electronics and aims to become China's top electronics chain.
Apple is wisely eyeing the Asian market for explosive growth in 2011. In Apple's last quarter, Asian revenue is up 147% and could bring Apple up to $2 billion annually. The iPhone is also gaining in popularity with a 12% market share in Japan and over 20% post-paid share in South Korea.Hon Hai to expand retail chain, open 500 Apple licensed stores in Asia originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 15:00:00 EST. Переслать - iPad 101: Reverting to an older version of an application
It happens to us all: an application update for the iPhone or iPad goes awry, and the new app doesn't do things the way we want (or, unfortunately, work at all on one of our devices). We ourselves are in that boat at the moment, since the new version 2.0 of the TUAW iPhone app is not working as expected on the iPad -- our development team is digging into the problem right now and we hope to be fast-tracking a fixed version right away. Our apologies for the issues.
This sort of thing is particularly sticky because there's no Apple-supported way to roll back to a previous version of an iOS application once you've updated. There is a workaround, however, if you haven't yet emptied your Trash in the Finder. Read on for the steps.

Переслать - Analyst: Apple to expand the iPhone to new carriers, boost sales in Asia
Toni Sacconaghi of Sanford Bernstein said the Apple iPhone is enjoying wide-spread acceptance in Asia that is "on par with the U.S. in some cases."
Recent figures from IDC suggest that 12% of all cell phones sold in Japan are iPhones and South Korea's KT confirmed earlier this week that it has sold two million iPhones since launching the handset in late 2009. Apple addressed this growing market during its recent earnings conference call and confirmed that sales in the Asia and Japan have doubled year over year.
Sacconaghi projected that Apple will take advantage of this momentum and expand to additional carriers in the Asian region.
Currently, the iPhone is sold exclusively by China Unicom in China, Softbank in Japan and KT in South Korea. Future carriers may include China Telecom, Japan's KDDI and LG Telecom in South Korea. Combined, the three carriers have a subscriber base of 75 million and could help Apple sell an additional seven to eight million iPhones in 2011.
Interestingly enough, Sacconaghi did not include China Mobile in his list of potential future providers. China Mobile recently stated it was working with Apple on a TD-LTE version of the popular smartphone. Though these predictions are encouraging, they may not pan out as Apple recently said that production of the iPhone 4 is still constrained when compared to global demand.Analyst: Apple to expand the iPhone to new carriers, boost sales in Asia originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 14:00:00 EST. Переслать - Voice behind antennagate song records a patent ditty
Remember that awesome antennagate song? You know, the one that was screened at the start of Apple's July 16th 2010 press conference all about the iPhone 4's antenna. Well..., Jonathon Mann, the guy who wrote and recorded it for his song-a-day project, has released another Apple-centric ditty.
The Apple patent song is all about (would you have guessed?) Apple patents! If you're a regular reader of this site, or you frequent Patently Apple, then you'll recognize some of the clever and insightful drawings and diagrams describing ideas and technologies that haven't necessarily been made a reality, yet.
If you're at MacWorld San Francisco this week, you might want to check out Mann and his band the Rock Cookie Bottoms performing at noon on the second floor of the Moscone exhibition center. Mann will also be giving a talk at 3 p.m. in room 3002.

Переслать - BBC iPlayer app for iPhone and iPad to be released in February
Paid Content:UK is reporting that the long-awaited BBC iPlayer app for iPhone and iPad is due to be released at some point late in February, almost a year after the app was first announced. It's expected the app will arrive on the heels of the departure of the BBC's future media and technology director, Erik Huggers, to Intel.
The extremely popular BBC iPlayer, an on-demand BBC program catch-up service for UK residents only, has been available on the iPhone and iPad as a web-app for some time now, but it's widely expected that a native-built iOS app would be unrivaled in performance and features compared to the current web version
What's next on the Apple-loving UK residents' wish list for the iPlayer? A full-blown version for the Apple TV. Although this is very unlikely to happen anytime soon, news of a native iOS iPlayer app is certainly a step in the right direction on the BBC's part.

Переслать - The French gain a 3D iPad Newstand
We've heard much talk of a virtual NewsStand for the iPad, but have yet to see one, until now. It seems, the French are the first to get a selection of magazines available on the iPad all from one app -- in virtual 3D, no less.
Le Kiosque, by LeKiosque.fr, is a free iPad app that sells magazines via in-app purchase. According to the Le Kiosque iOS App Store description (with the aid of some nifty Google translation in tow), the app has a 3D kiosk interface with more than 400 magazines available at up to 70% off the real-world, glossy-paper equivalent.
Once you've purchased your favourite mag, you can view it straight away via "streaming playback" -- no download wait times. There's also an off-line mode as well as access to archived back issues.
From what we can gather (with the aid of Google Translate, once again), according to a telephone interview conducted by FRECHWEB.FR with Le Kiosque's head of marketing, Michael Philippe, two months of negotiations were held between Apple and the Le Kiosque team before the app was approved. Apparently, Le Kiosque was hoping to offer subscription-based content, but Apple refused. Where've we heard that before?
Though in French, Le Kiosque is available in the US and UK iOS App Stores with some daily news content in English. Check out a video of the app in action after the break.

Переслать - Microsoft "hasn't ruled out" bringing Office to the Mac App Store
When Apple announced the Mac App Store, one of the inevitable concerns people raised was that "someday" Apple would make it the only way to install applications.
I said at the time -- and continue to believe -- that Apple won't do this for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest was that I couldn't imagine Adobe, Microsoft, AutoCAD and others would ever want to hand Apple 30 percent of their asking price.
Well, apparently Microsoft hasn't completely ruled the idea out.
Microsoft's Amanda Lefebvre told AllThingsD that putting Office on the Mac App Store is "something we are looking at... It's something we haven't ruled out. We just have to see how that relates to our business."
Color me skeptical. I suspect that what this means is Microsoft is going to see if their market share goes down because new Mac users become accustomed to using the Mac App Store so much so that they start to think of it as the only place to get software. If that is worth the 30 percent trade-off, then we might see Office in the Mac App Store. Another issue is that Microsoft has made their licensing for Office 2011 more restrictive than 2008 whereas the Mac App Store gives users much more generous freedom to install apps on all of their Macs.
Saying that they "haven't ruled it out" gives them the freedom to decide later, and I'm guessing that's all this statement is designed to say. I'd still be shocked if it actually happens, but even if it does, I don't expect Apple to make the Mac App Store the only want to install software, at least not anytime in the next several years.
Speaking of Microsoft Office, if you haven't checked it out yet, there is now a 30-day trial available from Microsoft's website.

Переслать - Doodle Jump makes deal with Universal, gets movie tie-in
Here's an interesting story out of Macworld this week. Doodle Jump, recently featured as the Top Paid App of all time, is going to Hollywood, but not quite in the way you might think. Rather than a Doodle Jump movie, the movies are instead coming to Doodle Jump, as Universal has announced a deal to put the main character of its upcoming film, Hop, in the popular iOS game as a promotional download. The movie comes out April 1, but in February, Doodle Jump will get an Easter-related level, with the official Universal character in the app as a bonus.
Sure, it's probably not the most exciting iOS tie-in -- the film was directed by the same guy who did the recent Alvin and the Chimpmunks movies, and unless you brought kids, it wasn't much to write home about (and even then, we hear it wasn't all that great). But still, this is an iOS title that's making a major deal with a Hollywood studio -- very impressive for the folks over at Lima Sky, and it's probably an indication that we'll see more collaboration between indie iOS developers and other forms of entertainment in the future.Doodle Jump makes deal with Universal, gets movie tie-in originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 09:00:00 EST.
