- Personal hotspot for Verizon iPhone priced at $20 for 2 GB
Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney confirmed that the personal hotspot add-on for the iPhone will cost $20 per month and will provide 2 GB of data. The personal hotspot feature will let you share your cellular data connection with up to five devices via WiFi. This 2 GB of data is separate from the $30 unlimited data plan and is allocated only for mobile hotspot usage. You should watch your usage closely as overages will be charged at a costly $20 per GB.
Rather than undercut its popular DROID lineup with free mobile hotspot, the carrier decided to play it safe and offer iPhone owners the same rate as Android owners. Select Android handsets on Verizon include 3G mobile hotspot and this service is billed at $20 for 2 GB of usage. Verizon does offer free mobile hotspot for the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, but that plan was adopted to boost sales of these webOS handsets. Judging by analysts' expectations, the Verizon iPhone won't need that additional boost.
Verizon may be the first carrier to offer personal hotspot on the iPhone, but it may not be last. Reports suggest the feature will be included in iOS 4.3 and will be rolled out worldwide. Similar to MMS in iOS 3.0, individual carriers will have the choice to enable this feature for its users. Now that Verizon has confirmed unlimited data and $20 personal hotspot, it will be interesting to see how AT&T responds. Any predictions?

Переслать - Apple II game Oregon Trail is turning 40 this year
You may not have heard about it lately, but the classic game Oregon Trail is turning 40 years old this year. Initially developed as an educational game for a history class in Minneapolis, Oregon Trail was released to the public in 1971 for the Apple II computer. As an educational tool, players take on the identity of a wagon train leader bringing settlers from Missouri to Oregon in 1848, using their problem-solving skills to help their group survive disease and food shortages along the way. Points are rewarded based on how well one did at their jobs and keeping their family members alive by the end of the journey.
For fans of the game, back in August we found a clever trailer for the sweding of Oregon Trail, but for those of you looking to harken back to a simpler time in computer gaming can give the game a try by either downloading the iPhone/iPod touch version from the App Store for US$0.99 or by playing the original Apple II version online at Virtual Apple.Oops! Yes, that should have read 1971, not 1981.

Переслать - Apple approving third-party AirPlay apps
Appadvice.com has noted that Apple has approved a 3rd-party app which supports AirPlay. The app is called StreamToMe and requires iOS 4.3, which has not yet been released to the public although beta versions have been released to developers.
This suggests that iOS 4.3 may be getting close to release to the general public, but more importantly it signals that Apple is opening the door for other applications to use AirPlay.
If you're not familiar with AirPlay, Richard Gaywood wrote a brief intro to AirPlay back in September.

Переслать - Microsoft offering free 30-day trials of Office 11
Office 11 for Mac is an interesting little bit of software put out by a smallish Seattle-based company called Microsoft -- it's a nice suite of business apps, including a word processor, database software, an email client, and a few other helpful programs all bundled up. You may not have heard much about it before (it's kind of like OpenOffice, if we understand it right), but if you want to give it a try, this Microsoft company is offering up a free 30-day trial over on the official website. We're not sure how useful the suite actually is, but free's free, right?
OK, all kidding aside, you probably already have some form of Office installed on your Mac. But the Microsoft team is offering up a free trial of Office 11 during Macworld, and if you haven't seen the latest version of this ubiquitous software yet, consider this your chance to check it out.
Plus, we've heard some pretty interesting things about this "Microsoft." Apparently they also make their own operating system, but it'll run on any computer, not just the ones you buy at the official store. Переслать - Free Photoshop Express 1.5 for iOS adds retina display and more
Adobe has updated Photoshop Express for iOS 4.2 devices, and now supports the Retina Display for better quality images. The app is faster and more responsive, and adds background uploads and multitasking support.
The app provides a limited subset of Photoshop functions, like crop, straighten, rotate, saturation, contrast, sharpen and other basics, and it includes a way to add frames.
If you have a Photoshop.com account, you can access any of your stored pictures. People who updated today are complaining that the app took some features away if location services are not enabled., something that wasn't true in the older version. Specifically, if location services are turned off the app reports that "Photo metadata cannot be added or preserved, and browsing through photos in the library will be disabled."
Photoshop Express is free, but now requires iOS 4.2 or greater. It runs on the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone.

The iPad newspaper is expected to require iOS 4.3 which will include support for subscription-based pricing. Переслать - Google launches cloud printing for iOS devices
Google announced that it is rolling out Cloud Print support for mobile document and mobile Gmail users. Announced in April 2010, Cloud Print lets you print from any device, OS or browser without having to install custom software or proprietary drivers. The idea is simple. You open a Google document on your iOS device, select print and the document is sent to your printer over the internet. The feature is compatible with devices running iOS 3.0 or higher.
While this new service shows promise, these is one catch for Mac users. To setup the Cloud Print system, you need to connect your printer to Google Cloud Print. Currently, this configuration step can only be done on a Windows PC. Google confirmed that it is working on a solution for Mac and Linux users and promised that it would be available soon.
Apple is also working on AirPrint, a similar wireless printing service that will let you print a document from your iOS device. AirPrint is slightly limited as it requires the iOS device and the printer to be connected to the same wireless network. There are also third-party solutions like Printopia and Print Sharing that enable wireless printing for iOS and Mac users.

Переслать - Google adds a weather widget to iPhone and Android search
Google launched a new weather search feature for iOS and Android browsers. When you navigate to google.com and search for "weather", you will be presented with a widget-like interface that shows your current conditions and immediate forecast. A slider will let you view a detailed hour-by-hour forecast for the upcoming 12 hours.
The new feature is available only in English and uses your location information to pull down the forecast. For iPod touch users that lack a dedicated GPS, this forecast information could be hit or miss depending on the accuracy of the WiFi triangulation information. You can also set your location manually but that takes some of the fun out of it.
The new search experience also works better with Google Instant turned on in the mobile browser. The settings for Google Instant appear underneath the search box when you open google.com. If you have Google Instant turned off, only the search terms will appear under the search box. You must manually search for weather to view the full widget. If Google Instant is enabled, the full weather widget appears below your search as you type the term weather.
While convenient, you should remember to turn off this Instant feature if you are on a limited data plan. With Google Instant enabled, you are pulling down new search results with each letter you type into the search box.
If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, check it out and let us know what you think. Will it replace Weatherbug on your handset, or is it just a novelty?

Переслать - Kodak loses critical part of ITC case against Apple and RIM
The International Trade Commission has ruled against Kodak in its patent infringement complaint against Research in Motion and Apple, Bloomberg reports. In an initial determination recommendation, ITC Judge Paul Luckern ruled that Kodak's patents are invalid and not infringed by Apple's iPhone or RIM's BlackBerry handsets.
This ruling is subject to review by the full six-member ITC commission, which can decided to overrule the judge or let his decision stand. If the commission overturns this decision, they could block the import of camera-enabled handsets from Apple and RIM. This final determination will be made by May 23.
The patents in this case involve an image preview feature used by devices with a digital camera, including smartphones (which are the target of this complaint). Kodak has already settled similar patent infringement lawsuits with Samsung and LG. Samsung settled with Kodak in 2010 and paid the imaging company a lump sum of US$500 million. LG settled in 2009 for $400 million. In a press release, Kodak remains optimistic that the Apple and RIM case will conclude in Kodak's favor, but this initial negative ruling casts doubt on a positive outcome for Kodak. Kodak has a lot on the line as a loss in this Apple and RIM case may hurt future patent infringement cases.

Переслать - Paying with your iPhone at Starbucks: hands-on
Last week, Starbucks updated its Starbucks Card app to handle payments through your iPhone and iPod touch at most Starbucks locations throughout the country. It was originally part of a pilot program when the app debuted in 2009, then expanded to Starbucks locations inside Target stores, and now it's nationwide.
There is still an exception, and that is Starbucks located inside Barnes & Noble. These locations are owned by Barnes & Noble themselves and will not accept Starbucks cards. Likewise, when checking for places that will accept mobile payments via the Starbucks Card app, Barnes & Noble locations are not listed.
I tested out the app on a visit to the Starbucks at Avenue at White Marsh, just outside Baltimore. While using the app is simple, it takes some work to get it ready to go.

Переслать - iPad 2, iPhone 5 could use NFC for mobile payments
A report from Bloomberg suggests Apple will integrate Near Field Communication technology into the iPhone 5 for AT&T and the iPad 2. The technology would let you make purchases wirelessly by waving your iOS device over an NFC-enabled register. The payment-processing system would tie into your iTunes account which stores your personal and credit card information.
Earlier rumors pointed to NFC-enabled iPhones that would function as an electronic wallet or a security passkey. This previous rumor also hinted that Apple's lineup of Mac computers would incorporate NFC technology in a two-way system that would let your iPhone communicate with your Mac.
NFC technology is expected to grow in the upcoming years here in the U.S. Recently, Samsung and Google introduced the Nexus S, the first NFC-enabled handset powered by Android. Google is also piloting a Hotpot program in Portland, Oregon that lets businesses place an NFC-enabled display in their windows. This specialized signage will send store and promotional information to NFC-capable handsets.
Though Apple has not detailed its plans for near field communication a recent patent application suggests Apple is exploring the idea of an electronic ticketing system using NFC.

Переслать - WSJ: Verizon confirms $30 unlimited data plan - for now
Verizon will offer a $30 unlimited data plan, the Wall Street Journal confirmed this morning, similar to the original plan that AT&T offered when the iPhone was originally introduced. This comes after a couple weeks of speculation.
"I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot," said Lowell McAdam, the carrier's chief operating officer.
Engadget, however, is showing that Verizon is doing away with its tiered data plan option entirely.
This offers another incentive not only for new iPhone customers, but luring over current AT&T users who are on the fence about whether or not to switch. AT&T has had capped-tier data plans since June, but those iPhone customers with older contracts had their unlimited data plans grandfathered in.
Update: The WSJ updated its blog to say that the unlimited data is a limited-time option, and that Verizon will be moving to tiered pricing in the near future.[via MacRumors]

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Dungeon Raid
I am a sucker for both puzzle games and RPGs, so Dungeon Raid is right up my alley. It's a puzzle game where you have to match up various icons on a grid, as you can see above, but the real draw here is that all of those icons map to various RPG abilities that then let you level and grind out a sword-and-sorcery style character. Matching up swords and skulls, for example, lets you attack monsters, while matching coins piles up gold to spend on items later on. Leveling up grants various abilities and spells that affect combat, and as you play the puzzle game, you're also building up a character and casting spells at the same time.
It's a great mix of the two genres, done in a pretty original way, and the game moves quickly enough that it's easy to summon up that "just one more turn" feeling as you play along. The game's polished and runs great, full Game Center and OpenFeint integration provides leaderboards, and there are four difficulty levels to play with and lots of random items to pick up as you play. Dungeon Raid is currently US$2.99 on the App Store.TUAW's Daily App: Dungeon Raid originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 10:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - The significance of Apple's earnings call numbers
Jean-Louis Gassée, former Apple executive and founder of the company that created BeOS, took a detailed look at Apple's latest financial report, SEC filings and its earnings conference call. In an analysis that mixes financial figures with excellent insight, Gassée outlines three areas of Apple's financials that are worthy of a closer look.
First, Gassée points out the explosive growth and influence of the iPad. Sales of the iPad grew from 3.3 million units in its first quarter of sales, 4.3 million in the next three months and 7.3 million for the latest quarter that Apple reported. In the upcoming year, Apple is expected to grab 87.5 percent of this media tablet market, a new category of devices created by the success of the iPad.
Gassée also notices that the iPad revenue for Q1 2011 reached $4.6 billion and is close to the $5.4 billion generated by the Mac, which is now 27 years old. This is an impressive figure for a device that's less than one year old. Part of the tablet's success, according to Gassée, can be attributed to its low price tag. The base model of the Wi-Fi iPad starts at US$500, which is $300 less than what was predicted before the tablet was launched.
Though it is far from a discount retailer, Apple has bucked the trend of high-priced devices with the iPad, the $99 Apple TV, and finally the $999 MacBook Air in 2010. Though its gross margin has dropped slightly to 38.5 percent in the last quarter, revenue and profit continued to grow, which attests to the success of these competitive prices.Continue reading The significance of Apple's earnings call numbers

Переслать - Become a sumo wrestler by stepping into SumoBooth
The facial expression experts over at MotionPortrait (makers of PhotoAvatar and ZombieBooth) have just dropped another fun photo effect application on us. SumoBooth takes your photo and transforms your head shot into a pudgy and powerful sumo wrestler.
Once the animated sumo face is generated, you can then have a little fun by slapping him (or her) around a little bit with your finger. Watch the face react to the abuse with various winces and frowns. If you speak, the application will play back what you said in a typically deep sumo voice.
SumoBooth comes with some social functions as well, like the ability to take snapshots and video of your new sumo face and then share them via Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.
The app will be featured at MotionPortrait's booth at Macworld 2011 for those who want to check it out. If you can't make it, have a look at the following video posted over on Appbank (Japanese).Continue reading Become a sumo wrestler by stepping into SumoBooth

Переслать - iOS game The Incident recreated in real life
The Incident, a retro-style game for iOS devices that makes players avoid and jump on mountains of debris falling from the sky in order to reach the top, has been recreated in real life by some enterprising young gamers. Brought to our attention by MacStories, the video of the "sweding" (remaking something from scratch using whatever you can get your hands on) of The Incident is quite amusing to watch as these guys remake everything, from the opening credits to the music and the large items "falling" from the sky that the real-life player must avoid and climb up on.
Our own Mike Schramm reviewed The Incident back in August of last year and called it "worth every cent of the US$1.99" it sells for on the App Store, so you gamers into retro action may want to check it out. We've seen some creative sweding of games before, like this live-action version of Angry Birds, but the video of The Incident is a must-see for gaming fans of any ilk.

Переслать - Official App Store account on Twitter
Apple has an official Twitter account for the App Store, appropriately named @appstore, which promises "official App Store tweets including our featured apps, exclusive offers, and more."
The first post from the account came only a few hours ago, but there are already 50,000 followers signed up.
One of the questions that people have had with the Mac App Store was the question of "discoverability" of apps on the store that aren't "featured" or on the "top" lists; hopefully this account will be one more way for Apple to get the word out about new apps that you might not otherwise hear about. If you aren't a Twitter user, you can always follow the RSS feed for the account. If you're on Facebook, App Store is there, too.

Переслать - Viber VoIP app for iPhone updated and improved
An update to Viber has hit the App Store today. I was impressed with the original release of this free VoIP client when it came out early last month. I especially liked the voice quality and the notifications. Since the review, Skype with video finally made it to the iPhone and attracted a lot of attention, but I still prefer the audio quality of Viber, and unlike Skype, it doesn't have to be running to get a call notification. Of course, everyone you want to call must be running Viber, but that is the only requirement.
Most of the update to Viber is for bug fixes, and there is also an update to the privacy policy, which some users found confusing or objectionable. Viber servers get a copy of your address book names and phone numbers so that the app knows which of your contacts are using Viber without seeing your contact notes or email addresses. You can now read the privacy policy from within the app. New or improved features include a call quality monitor, better Bluetooth support and fixes to international dialing.
Viber is also coming to BlackBerry phones and Android. I don't think Viber is ever going to threaten Skype, but in some ways, I like it better. If you are a frequent caller, especially if you call internationally, it's worth a look. Viber is voice only, so no video calling.

Переслать - iPad high resolution display rumored for third generation
According to IDC research manager Tom Mainelli, the iPad 3 and not the iPad 2 will be the lucky recipient of a high-resolution display. Previous rumors have repeatedly suggested that the iPad 2 will sport a high-resolution "Retina" display. Most of these rumors came from Asian sources and were cautiously repeated with skepticism that Apple could pack a Retina Display into the iPad 2 and keep the price competitive.
Mainelli bucks this trend by asserting that it is production and not cost that is the limiting factor for a 10-inch high-resolution display. The technology exists and is reasonably priced, but there are no production facilities capable of producing a Retina Display at the volume Apple will need for the iPad 2. Apple sold over 7 million iPads in its last quarter, and these numbers are expected to skyrocket in the upcoming year.
Rather than experience lagging sales due to component shortages. Apple may have opted to push off the high-resolution display and manufacture the iPad 2 with a standard resolution display. Apple is reportedly prepping manufacturers for the iPad 3, giving them time to ramp up their display production capabilities for the third generation tablet. If this analysis by Mainelli pans out and the iPad 2 does ship with a standard display, will you be disappointed? Disappointed to the point that you bypass the iPad 2 and wait for the iPad 3? Let us know in the comments.iPad high resolution display rumored for third generation originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
