  • Holiday giveaway: MoGo Talk XD for iPhone 4

The holidays are all about being together, and in this case we want to put you together with a special giveaway: we've got two MoGo Talk XD Bluetooth headset/iPhone 4 case combinations to give away to two lucky readers.

The US$99 MoGo Talk XD is a slim-profile Bluetooth headset that actually folds flat to snap into the back of the paired iPhone case -- you're not likely to forget your headset again if it's always with your phone. The product has a few drawbacks (for one thing, you have to charge the headset with its own USB connector, rather than piggybacking on the iPhone cable), but for convenience on the go it can't be beat. The case doesn't add as much bulk as you'd think, and it does a nice job of protecting both the phone and the headset.

To win one of the two available headsets, just leave a comment on this post; we'll select the two winners at random. Good luck!

    • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.

  • Apple posts free developer documentation for iBooks users

If your resolutions for 2011 include teaching yourself to be a Mac or iOS developer, then Apple just gave you a very nice Christmas present.

According to a tip from our old friend Nik Fletcher at Realmac Software, Apple has recently put a number of Apple Developer Publications books into the iBookstore for free. This makes it simple to grab these books, which range from "The Objective-C Programming Language" to "iOS Application Programming Guide," for reading on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

As our resident developer and iOS guru Erica Sadun points out, it's "kinda dumb" to have the books running on the device you're trying to develop for. It would be nice if Apple eventually made a version of iBooks available for Mac OS X. Although, as commenter Nick points out, once you have the books downloaded you can open them with any app that supports the EPUB format, like Adobe's Digital Editions product.

You can also get a Mac-compatible version of the books by going to the developer site and then selecting the PDF option to download them. The PDFs can also be used on the iPad or iPhone, but since Apple has done the work to convert these documents into nice EPUB-formatted iBooks, why not take advantage of their effort?

By my count, there are six books available. To grab them, launch iBooks on your device, tap the Store button, tap the Search icon, and then type in "apple developer publications." The books range in length from 44 to 200 pages, and are great references to use with many of the other developer books from Pearson and Peachpit Press that can also be purchased in the iBookstore.

  • Talkcast 10PM ET, 7PM PT: 'Twas the 'Cast before Christmas edition

It's that time again! The day is nearing when we rampantly speculate about what wonderful new iThing will magically appear in our lives, and we anxiously wait for that special day when glorious new toys appear. You know what I'm talking about: Stevemas! That day in January when Steve makes his appearance and changes our lives. What did you think I was talking about?

Tonight on the Talkcast we'll be discussing what you all would like to have appear under your tree on Saturday (ahem), standard Mac topics, and hopefully we can spend a little time at my House of Crackpot Theories. I hope so, anyway. I've been making Ninjabread Men!

We kick things off tonight at 7PM Pacific, 10 Eastern. Your calls and questions help us make the show the best it can be, otherwise I'm just talking to myself! To participate on TalkShoe, you can click the Talkshoe Live button on our profile page, use the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client (with built-in VoIP support); however, for maximum fun, you should call in. Just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday to listen and chat; to call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (yay for free cellphone weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.

If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!

  • PadDock 10 iPad speaker dock makes beautiful music

Here at TUAW, we get a chance to see a lot of iPad and iPhone docks. In fact, you may have seen our recent iPad dock holiday gift guide. One new iPad dock that we didn't know about at the time the gift guide was being published was the PadDock 10 speaker dock from SMKLink (US$99.99).

The PadDock is well-made of black plastic and brushed aluminum, and is quite solid and sturdy. The mechanism used to hold the iPad in place clicks when you push the iPad in, and you know that it's going to stay in place without moving. The iPad can be rotated 360° or more, and there are detents every 90° to lock the device into place in either portrait or landscape orientation. The base is actually thicker than that on an iMac -- it provides the weight on the smaller base to keep the PadDock from tipping over. WIth an iPad in place, the PadDock looks like a miniature iMac; so much so, in fact, that I am tempted to get one just to give my iMac a "Mini-Me" companion.

The sound quality out of the speakers is very good. While it doesn't have quite the range of high-end speaker docks available for the iPhone and iPod touch, the PadDock does provide decent volume and frequency range that is good enough for listening to most music or watching movies.

  • Make your own iPhone/iPod dock from a tree branch

Anthropologie has developed a new way to destroy trees by offering a US$98 iPhone dock created from a round of hickory wood with branches attached ... and that's pretty much it. No speakers. No clock. It's enough to make you want to go out, scavenge a couple of dead tree limbs and make one for yourself.

That's exactly what Chris over at ManMade did. He turned a spare iPod/iPhone USB cable, a couple of sticks, a fallen tree limb and a branch into the exact same dock found at Anthropologie, then provided detailed instructions so you can make your own. It's not difficult to make, and should you happen to be lacking tree limbs, you can pick up similar wood materials at a craft store or nursery.

So, if you're looking for a cool last-minute gift, have the right tools and couple hours to spare, try making one of these docks.

  • Princeton and iOS DHCP still not getting along

It seems that every time Apple squashes one DHCP bug in iOS, another one pops up.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a system of automatically assigning IP addresses on a network, which mostly happens behind the scenes and without users noticing anything about it. Without an IP address, a device such as an iPhone, iPad, or any sort of computer cannot access the network.

DHCP uses a "lease" system where a computer can use a specific IP address for a certain length of time. In contrast to a static addressing scheme (where each device has a permanently-assigned IP address), DHCP allows many more devices to use the network -- as long as they are not all online at the same time.

Initially, iOS devices had two different problems. First they would hold on to their IP addresses after the "lease" expired, when they were supposed to be done with them.

Apple apparently fixed that problem, but created another one: devices were asking to renew their DHCP leases too often. The latter problem was fixed in iOS 4.1, but that was only released for iPhone and iPod touch devices, not iPads. With iOS 4.2, that bug is finally fixed.

    But don't get too excited.

According to Princeton's tech team, the latest versions have a problem that they're listing as "iOS 4.1 - 4.2.1 Allows DHCP Lease to Expire, Keeps Using IP Address." Does that sound familiar? It's eerily like the earlier report from Princeton, "iPhone OS 3.2 on iPad Stops Renewing DHCP Lease, Keeps Using IP Address" -- so the issue is not taken care of yet.

If you only use your iOS device on a small home or office network, you may not be aware of this flaw, but -- and I hate to have to be so obvious, but a lot of people have apparently missed this -- managing a computer network on a university campus is a whole lot different than your home Wi-Fi network.

Despite reports, Princeton has not "banned" iOS devices, but their workaround includes disabling Notificatons, Find My iPhone/iPad, FaceTime, and removing all VoIP applications.

Hopefully one of these days, Apple will figure out how to get the iOS DHCP client to work efficiently on larger networks. In the meantime, you can keep track of the issue on Princeton's Apple iOS Networking page.
