- Dropbox 1.0 available with performance enhancements, Selective Sync
Dropbox, the multi-platform file syncing application that frankly puts Apple's own iDisk to shame, has been updated to version 1.0. The application has been in public beta for over two years, and an iOS version of Dropbox came out about a year after the public beta began.
Dropbox reaching 1.0 is more than a numerical milestone for its developers. They've also made hundreds of bug fixes, reduced resource usage (memory usage in particular has been reduced by 50 percent), and made tweaks to the interface to make it more user-friendly. The most intriguing new feature is Selective Sync, which allows users to choose which of your Dropbox folders to sync to their devices, which the developers say will come in handy on netbooks or other devices with limited storage space.
You can get Dropbox 1.0 here. If you're not already running Dropbox, now's the perfect time to give it a shot -- the program is so good that many people have wondered why Apple hasn't bought it yet and incorporated it into Mac OS X.

Переслать - Word Lens: an augmented reality language translator for iPhone
Word Lens is one of those apps that grabs your attention the first time you see it in action. Created by Quest Visual, It is an iPhone-based optical character recognition (OCR) application used for language translation. In real-world usage, it will translate a foreign language sign in an instant using your camera. Word Lens uses OCR to single out the letters in an image captured by your camera. It identifies letters, builds the words and looks them up in its built-in dictionary. Once the words are identified, translation from one language to another is easy.
Word Lens is similar in functionality to Google Goggles, which also lets you translate words within an image. Words Lens, though, has a leg up on its competition as the image processing and translating is done on the phone, in real-time. Google Goggles relies on Google's servers for the translation, which slows down the translation time and requires you to have an Internet connection.
Word Lens is now available in the App Store for you to try. The core app is available for free, and language pairs (English/Spanish) are available as an in-app purchase. At launch, the app only supports English to Spanish and Spanish to English translations. Additional languages will be added in future versions. If you don't want to buy a language pack, it is worth a download as the app includes two demo modes. The reverse mode will reverse the letters in an image and the erase mode will white-out the words.
Word Lens requires iOS 4.0 or later and a video camera. It is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3gs, or the 4th generation iPod touch. You can see Word Lens in action after the break.Continue reading Word Lens: an augmented reality language translator for iPhone

Переслать - Tango updated to support iPod touch
This is going to be a great holiday gift for many of our readers. Tango Video Calls, the app that lets you do free video chats with friends over 3G as well as Wi-Fi, has been updated to work on the 4th generation iPod touch. Rather than use the app for registration, you can register via email.
The update, which also applies to the iPhone 4, gives the contact list a new look and feel and also has improved resolution on the Retina Display.
Check our previous review for details on how Tango works, and if you have a newer iPod touch, well, get over to the App Store.

Переслать - App Review: Reiner Knizia's Through The Desert proves that pastel camels have serious staying power
The latest big name board game to make an appearance on the iPad is Though The Desert. Serious board game fans have been anxiously waiting for this app ever since it was announced and I'm happy to say that this latest Reiner Knizia port to the digital realm is totally worth the wait. The app currently costs $5.99 and is available on the App Store.
Even before the game was released, there was reason to believe it would be a solid experience. TribeFlame, the developer, released Keltis Oracle this past spring and it's been one of the board game apps that I turn to again and again, even with my iDevices getting fuller and fuller with outstanding gaming options. Read on to see why you will, in fact, want to take a pastel-colored camel caravan Through The Desert.

Переслать - Retaining your masculinity while carrying the iPad
The New York Times had an odd post recently in which it responded to men who were having trouble carrying their iPad around town in a masculine fashion. According to the article in its Fashion & Style section, some men have even eschewed taking their iPad in public just because there's a lack of suitably macho bags. Scott Stein at CNET even rated iPad bags in terms of their "humiliation index."
I've used a laptop for many, many years and I'll admit this isn't a problem that's ever occurred to me. Any doubts or questions about my bag are instantly dissipated when I bust out awesome technology like the iPad. I guess I could see a bit of embarrassment if you're wearing a funky fanny pack or something, but there are tons of great looking bags for the iPad. Just check out the Booq Boa push bag, for example
If you really have trouble with establishing your masculinity via your gadget bag, let me suggest using a Sharpie to draw some skulls on it or maybe add some spikes.Retaining your masculinity while carrying the iPad originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 18:30:00 EST. Переслать - 32 GB versus 32GB: Almost everyone is writing it wrong
Fair warning, dear reader: this may be the most pedantic post in the history of TUAW. Maybe in history, period. But I can't help it: someone is wrong on the internet.
Here's a fun trick. Go to the Apple menu on your Mac and select "About This Mac." A little window will come up listing your processor and RAM specs. Mine describes a 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM. If I click "More Info" to open System Profiler, I'll also learn that I have a 250 GB hard drive.
Now go to Apple's product page for the MacBook Pro and click on "Buy Now" to see descriptions of tech specs. The 17-inch model is currently listed with a 2.53GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. Other than the obvious differences in specs, did you notice anything different? All the spaces disappeared. 2.53GHz instead of 2.6 GHz. 4GB and 500GB instead of 4 GB or 250 GB.
Almost everyone in the computer industry is writing tech specs this way on their product pages, and they're all doing it wrong. Click "Read More" to find out why.

Переслать - 2.8 million downloads for Gun Bros, 7.8 million for Zombie Farm
I am anxiously awaiting some stats on this past week's releases in the App Store -- over the past two weeks, we've seen some gigantic games released for iOS, and yet familiar names like Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, and Fruit Ninja are still topping the charts (along with some big EA titles benefiting from that price drop). But even if it takes a while for all of those releases to find their place on the App Store, here's news of a few more recent titles that have done well. First up, freemium shooter Gun Bros (featured as our Daily App choice a while back) has picked up 2.8 million downloads so far, and claims 175,000 daily active users so far. That's not huge, but it's a nice sizable audience for a freemium title, especially one that tends a little more towards the hardcore gamer. Glu is also supporting the app with updates, including a new planet to play on, special Christmas-themed gear, and some extra in-game currency rewards for users who update the app.
Zombie Farm is doing even better than that -- the wacky cross between zombies and Farmville has earned 7.3 million downloads since launch, and is still growing at about 25% a month. Currently, the app's reviews section is full of complaints about some bugs, but nevertheless, Playforge has claimed 2.76 billion minutes of playtime, and while it hasn't shared actual revenue numbers, there's no question that players have probably spent plenty of money on the game's in-app purchases.
I would call both of those solid hits for sure. We'll have to see what other big games rise to the top after this raucous holiday season on the App Store continues.2.8 million downloads for Gun Bros, 7.8 million for Zombie Farm originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 17:30:00 EST. Переслать - Sony announces official PlayStation app for iPhone
The European PlayStation site today announced an upcoming official PlayStation app for the iPhone and Android platforms. The first version of this app will allow you to check your PlayStation trophies, read your friends' status updates, and keep up with news about the PlayStation console and its games. You'll even be able to share your favorite products with your friends via social networks like Twitter and Facebook.
We don't have word on a US version of the app yet, unfortunately, so until then, this is just for you folks in Europe. The app's initial release will only be available in France, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. Sony is already working on expanding the app to other countries; we're obviously hopeful that it will reach the US.

With only six variants on the basic theme, there aren't a lot of different choices. Still, you'll want to make sure that you answer these two questions:
- Do you or the recipient of the iPad need 3G wireless?
- How much storage do you need in the iPad?
Follow along as I take you through some simple questions. Answering them will help you make your buying decision. For some of you, this may already seem like a simple choice, but there may be more factors going into the decision than you think.

Переслать - iPad hits 50,000 apps in eight months
MacStories points out that according to the listings in the iTunes App Store, the iPad has reached an unofficial total of 50,000 apps in just the eight months since software started selling for the device. For comparison's sake, the iPhone (which basically means the App Store in general, since that was the first device that could run Apple's apps) hit that total right around the year mark, between July 2008 and 2009. iPad apps first went live in the App Store back in April of this year, and at the time, I noted that it was the best selection of original software for a hardware launch that I'd ever seen on any device -- console manufacturers would love to have had the support that the iPad did when it launched. And that developer interest has continued -- while I think we have seen the price drops that a lot of developers expected (though probably slower than was predicted), developers are still extremely interested in developing for the iPad itself, even inside of the iOS environment.
And as MacStories notes, this makes you wonder what the response will be to the Mac App Store when it launches early next year. In that case, we've got an established platform (remember, no one, not even most developers, had held an iPad in their hands when the apps on the App Store went live in April) with an existing software library that's moving into a new venue, so it'll be extremely interesting to see what happens, both from a developer perspective and as a consumer of Mac software. Maybe next May we'll be talking about an even faster run to 50,000 apps for sale.iPad hits 50,000 apps in eight months originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 16:00:00 EST. Переслать - Apple, Microsoft, others acquire Novell patents for $450 million
Software company Novell recently had to reorganize after an acquisition by Attachmate, and as a result, a number of patents held by the company went up the air for grabs. Apple has decided to team with Microsoft, and picked up the patents along with a few other partners for $450 million. It's not quite known what will happen with these, but the company formed by the partnership, CPTN Holdings LLC, now owns 882 patents originally filed by Novell. Filing papers show that this company was "a consortium organized by Microsoft," so presumably the patents will simply be held by the company to protect certain technologies if necessary, or Microsoft and its partners (including Apple) will split them up according to some agreement.
This isn't the only chunk of patents that Apple is looking to pick up -- the bankrupt Nortel Networks is also trying to sell off a swath of 4,000 patents worth over $1 billion all together, and Apple is reportedly interested in buying at least a few of those. Microsoft and Google are also aiming to pick up some of Nortel's patents.
And all of these patents are just more ammo in a few different ongoing lawsuits, between Apple and other cell phone manufacturers. At this point, we're getting into a level of abstraction that seems pretty far removed from the reason patents were invented in the first place. But as long as Apple can gain an advantage by patenting as many technologies as possible and buying as many patents as it can, it'll play the system as much as is legal.

Переслать - Online Apple Store adds one-click "popular configurations" option
Just in time for those holiday orders, there's been a small change in the online Apple Store's build-to-order pages for the MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. Dave "Eagle-Eye" Caolo spotted the addition of new one-click BTO configurations, which include free express shipping.
The new one-click buttons let you prefill the most popular options for your custom config, including such favorites as "more RAM," "faster hard drive," the matte screen for the 15" MBP and pre-installed versions of iWork or Microsoft Office. Of course, you can still custom-configure from all the available options if you prefer.
You'll see the new options in the US store after clicking Select on the laptop product page of your choice.

Переслать - Apple patents CoverFlow-like spiral interface
Patently Apple has unearthed a new patent that shows off a CoverFlow-like interface for browsing icons or album covers, only instead of CoverFlow's linear layout, this one organizes content in a spiral. We've seen rotating menus in Apple's patents before, but this looks more involved. It's described as a "receding spiral in a virtual 3D space," and you would use your finger (so probably in an iOS interface) to spin the spiral around and browse through whatever you were looking for. There's also a "V" shaped display listed, and users might even be able to reorganize icons or art in the display (while creating or sorting a playlist, for example).
A finger is explicitly shown in the patent, but presumably this would work with a mouse, or even a scrollwheel, as in the case of the non-touchscreen iPods. It's definitely an intriguing idea, and adds a little more visual variety to browsing through various media or icons. As with all of these patents, there's no guarantee that Apple will actually use this plan in a future product, but clearly someone in Cupertino is thinking about how to put a new spin on the CoverFlow interface.Apple patents CoverFlow-like spiral interface originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 15:00:00 EST. Переслать - Opera 11 for Mac debuts with tab stacking, gestures, extensions and more
Opera 11 for Mac is finally available with all sorts of cool features for you to play with, like "tab stacking," mouse gesture support and extensions. Here's an initial run-down of the major features available in Opera 11 for Mac.
Tab stacking is pretty cool. I'm "one of those" people who typically has a huge number of tabs open at once. Opera reinforces my bad habit by allowing me to drag tabs on top of one another, creating a pop-up window of all the tabs in a stack. Each window displays a thumbnail of its pages' contents, and a click brings it forward.
The mouse gestures will take some getting used to. Click the right mouse button to bring up the gesture UI, a large circle featuring icons for common functions, like back, forward, stop and open in a new tab. Not having used it, I'll guess that keyboard shortcuts are faster. Of course, I keep dozens of tabs open so what do I know?
Extensions work as you'd expect, adding additional functionality to your browsing experience. There's more, of course, which you can read about here. We'll have a more detailed look at Opera 11 for Mac soon. Until then, check out the brief promo video after the break.Continue reading Opera 11 for Mac debuts with tab stacking, gestures, extensions and more

Переслать - Apple reportedly adds touch screen suppliers for iPad 2
To add to our growing stockpile of iPad 2 rumors, DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has added two new touch screen suppliers, Chimei Innolux and Cando, with those shipments to begin in January or February. The article says that expected orders of the iPad 2 will be more than 6 million per month. This follows up the rumor that backlighting units were shipped to Chimei Innolux and LG Display.
DigiTimes brought us other iPad 2 rumors including additional parts suppliers and a camera supplier. Keep in mind that DigiTimes' track record is hit-or-miss at times, but with the growing number of iPad 2 rumors, their spot-on record when it came to the iPhone 4 hardware and Apple's normal updating pattern when it comes to the iPhone, it's safe to say that some sort of hardware update will be announced in early 2011 -- maybe in time to pre-order the perfect (but slightly late) Valentine's Day gift.

Переслать - Holiday cooking with your iPad: be safer while you sauteé
Flour belongs in cookies, not on your iPad. The same goes for butter, wine, eggs, and oil. Your kitchen may be a treasure trove of cooking essentials, but iPads and food should never directly mix.
That's why this cooking with your iDevice radio story over at NPR gave us a moment's pause at TUAW central this morning. Although it's a good piece about the varied experience of using traditional cookbooks and modern technology, one blogger still sighed with exasperation. "Did these people never hear of a gallon-sized Ziploc bag?"
Zip-seal bags -- specifically the 1-gallon size -- are, in fact, extremely iPad friendly and minor kitchen miracles. You can still touch your device's capacitive screen through the plastic, and because the bags are so thin and basically iPad-sized, the iPad can be set in your normal holding stand so your recipes remain viewable.

Переслать - Patent battle continues between Nokia and Apple with 13 more disputed patents
The fun doesn't stop in the ongoing Nokia/Apple patent dispute; the Finnish cellphone manufacturer has now filed claims in three European countries alleging Apple infringement on 13 additional patents, beyond the 24 patents already covered in the existing US and International Trade Commission filings.
Nokia has chosen to file claims on four patents in the UK High Court, seven patents in district court in Dusseldorf, five in Mannheim and 2 in the Hague. I'm not a patent lawyer (to say nothing of an international intellectual property expert) so I can't say why there's a split between the two German courts, but the company also filed separate claims in the US's Federal courts in two states (Wisconsin and Delaware).
These patents cover technologies that Nokia claims are used in the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, among other products. They include on-device app stores, touch user interface elements, caller ID and more.
Apple, of course, isn't standing idle on the patent litigation front. Over the past year, the company has retained top legal talent to help defend against Nokia, Motorola and other patent challengers while pressing Apple's own counterclaims of patent infringement.

Behold the power of iPad. It can charm even the most non-technological of artists. Here, they rock out to Madonna's Material Girl using iPad-based instrument applications.
It's a lovely little video and a nicer demonstration of how beautifully the iPad has evolved from a basic tablet into an artistic medium. Chorus member Jani Halme tells TUAW, "Naturally we shot this using iPhones."

In the end, the free version is a nice alternative for those that want to try the game before they hand a dollar over to Apple and Firemint for the full version. It is also a chance for Firemint to compare two revenue models - paid and ad-supported, to see which generates the most cash.Firemint releases free, ad-supported Flight Control to App Store originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 10:30:00 EST. Переслать - Police hunt down stolen iPhone in chopper
Police in Australia take iPhone theft seriously; so seriously, they will not hesitate to employ the use of a helicopter to nab a thief who has made off with one of Apple's prized mobile devices. The story begins in a hospital in Heidelberg, Australia where an iPhone was stolen from an unsuspecting woman. The woman's iPhone presumably had the now well-known Find My iPhone app setup installedand the police used the app on another device or MobileMe to track and locate the iPhone in the neighboring suburb of Greensborough.
Lucky for the lady and her missing iPhone, a police helicopter was already in the area and was dispatched to the iPhone's GPS coordinates. The tracking was so accurate that the helicopter was able to spot the thief riding a stolen bike down a city street. The 16-year old suspect ditched the bike as soon as the helicopter was hovering above him (who wouldn't?) and ran towards the Tram to make a hasty escape.
The suspect was apprehended by police on the ground in Bundoora and the unfortunate lad was caught with the stolen iPhone and some marijuana. He is now being charged with burglary, theft, and the possession of cannabis. Mark that down as another win for the now free Find My Phone service and another loss for iPhone thieves.

Переслать - Developers urged to submit Mac App Store apps by December 31
Now that we've got an official Mac App Store release date, developers are being urged to get their apps submitted. A quick statement from Apple notes that that apps must be submitted for review by December 31, 2010.
Apple began accepting submissions in the first week of November. With the first submissions come the first rejections, and as far as we can tell, LittleIpsum was the first to get the big DENIED stamp from Cupertino.
Get down to it, developers. You don't want to spend the holiday hovering over your Mac.Developers urged to submit Mac App Store apps by December 31 originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 09:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Dungeon Defenders: First Wave
Dungeon Defenders: First Wave is a tough title to recommend. Don't get me wrong -- it's a great game, and for the right player, it might be one of the best games on iOS of the year. But it's quite complicated, and it mixes up lots of different genres, from action RPG to real-time strategy to tower defense. I first got to see the game running on the PlayStation 3 a few months ago, so you can head over to Joystiq to read my impressions if that sounds like an interesting concoction. The basic idea is that you play a hero from one of four classes (warrior, ranger, mage or monk), and then you fight a series of enemy creatures in waves on various floors of a dungeon. In between waves, you can set up defenses that vary per class, so the game switches off between tower defense strategy, with various resources to protect and collect as you play, and a hack-and-slash sequence, complete with each hero's own XP, loot and talent trees.
It sounds complicated, and it is. If you're not already familiar with the tower defense genre, and the idea of XP and loot is still foreign to you, this one might not be for you. But it's quite impressive once you figure it out, and if nothing else, the fact that Trendy has pretty much ported their Unreal Engine 3 game straight over to iOS without any compromises (the screen is a little cluttered with controls, but still) is really incredible. This is basically the same game I played on the PSN, running at full graphics and full speed on my iPhone 4.
There are a few different modes to play through (including a story mode with cinematics and bosses, and a survival mode with endless waves to defeat). Drop-in and drop-out multiplayer is included, though I didn't get a chance to try it myself, and I've heard it can sometimes be testy unless you're local. The game offers Game Center integration for achievements and leaderboards as well. At just US$2.99 for the universal app, it's a really excellent title. For the right gamer who's ready to conquer the heady mix of various game genres, Dungeon Defenders: First Wave could be extremely rewarding. You'll see a video of the game in action after the break.Continue reading TUAW's Daily App: Dungeon Defenders: First Wave

Переслать - Backflip Studios reports 20 million active monthly users
When the news hit earlier this month that Zynga had purchased iPhone developers Newtoy (after Ngmoco and Tapulous were also purchased this year), I immediately joked on Twitter that we should make odds on which iPhone developer gets acquired next. In all seriousness, however, Backflip Studios is actually a pretty good candidate to be acquired by a larger company. I heard Julian Farrior speak at GDC earlier this year, and Backflip shows all the signs of a healthy, growing developer: quite a few solid apps, lots of ways to generate revenue and a healthy knowledge of how to make apps popular and profitable. Backflip has one more juicy plum a prospective investor might want to pull: 20 million monthly active users.
Backflip is also claiming 2 million daily active users in its apps, and it's reportedly making over half a million dollars a month in ads alone. Farrior is a big fan of multiple revenue streams, though, so paid apps are probably a nice source of income for the company as well. Farrior also says Backflip is porting popular titles to iPad and the Android platform, and the company has some big plans in store for 2011.
Of course, as with all successful app developers on the App Store, the question is if Farrior even wants a partner in development. Lots of small studios that are doing well on Apple's platform probably aren't interested in bringing another partner on. But some of the investors shopping the App Store have some pretty deep pockets, and when a big traditional game publisher comes along offering a big check, lots of experience and infrastructure for marketing and development, it's hard to think that a studio like Backflip wouldn't be tempted.Backflip Studios reports 20 million active monthly users originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 07:00:00 EST. Переслать - Rumor: New iMacs and MacBook Pros in the first half of 2011
This rumor is like saying it will rain somewhere in the world during the first half of 2011, but DigiTimes reports that Apple will launch new MacBook Pros and iMacs in the first half of next year. The iMac was last updated in July 2010, and the MacBook Pros last received an update way back in April 2010, so updates to both those lines in the next six months shouldn't come as a shock to anyone.
As for details, DigiTimes doesn't have many except there will be "at least four upgraded MacBook Pros," and the new iMacs will feature "a new panel size and a price point for the mainstream market." Personally, I'm hoping Apple drops the optical drive from at least one of the 15-inch MacBook Pros and throws in 512GB solid-state drives across the line. As for the iMac, the "new panel size" could mean a new aspect ratio or just larger displays featuring the current aspect ratio. Given how Apple seems to be gearing up to push the Mac in 2011, cheaper iMac price-points should come as no surprise. As for Blu-ray, although many still hold out hope that Apple will include Blu-ray drives, that seems unlikely.Rumor: New iMacs and MacBook Pros in the first half of 2011 originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 03:00:00 EST.
