- iSlate.com and the 'impending Apple slate'
As we mentioned earlier, MacRumors reported that Apple apparently bought the islate.com domain name a few years back. This name isn't so shocking when you remember the quote from New York Times executive editor Bill Keller at a meeting on October 26th about the future of digital content in the newspaper business:
"I'm hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times Reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate..."
Let me say this clearly: Apple would never name the tablet the 'iPad'. It's too similar to 'iPod'. So, everyone, please stop calling it the iPad.
If you want to listen to an interesting talk about the future of digital publishing and distribution, check out the video of Keller's speech below. If you want to jump to the 'impending Apple slate' mention, skip to 8:30.
IMHO, 'iSlate' is a great name, but I want to know what you would call it. Tell us in the comments!

Holidays - Holiday greetings - Christmas - New Year - TUAWПереслать - Commodore 64 1.2 released in the App Store with three new free games
Filed under: Gaming, Software, Retro Mac, Developer, iPhone, App Store, iPod touch
The creators of Commodore 64, that emulator app that eventually gained Apple's blessing, emailed to say that they have released a brand new version [iTunes link] with some brand new (old) C64 games to revisit. The gist of this one is that you can buy C64 ROMs to play through in-app purchases, but right out of the gate with version 1.2, three different games are free: Bruce Lee, Laser Squad, and Samurai Warrior. So if any of those ring your nostalgic bell, you can go jump in on the app now -- it's $1.99.
If you want to add in some extra games, it'll cost you 99 cents each, but they've now made Alleykat, Uridium, Paradroid, Stormlord and Nebulus all available that way. Unfortunately, not all emulator developers have been able to secure such a deal with Apple, but C64 enthusiasts have to be excited about what's available with this one.TUAWCommodore 64 1.2 released in the App Store with three new free games originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Dec 2009 17:00:00 EST. AppStore - iPhone - Apple - IPod Touch - iTunesПереслать - Tablet rumors du jour: FT says 1/26 announcement, NYT says Jobs "extremely happy," MacRumors finds iSlate.com registration
Filed under: Rumors
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, at least if your stocking is hung on the mantel of Apple tablet rumors. Here's the two latest chunks of yummy speculation, anonymous sourcing and eager shouts from the futures market on unicorn tears:
- The Financial Times has identified an Apple event reservation for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in late January (the same location used for the last iPod event, which featured Steve Jobs' return to active duty). The paper is saying that the event date is going to be January 26th, and while they won't say it's a lock for the tablet announcement, our buddy Gene Munster is giving even odds that the product to be launched will be either the medium or large device.
- The Bits blog of the New York Times, in a compelling rundown of the 2010 prospects for tablet computing, has got some fascinating perspective on the expected tablet. Writer Nick Bilton cites conversations with current and former senior Apple employees on the tablet topic, and points out that quite a bit of the tech in the current iPhone came out of tablet development and stalled prototypes from five years ago. The worries inside Apple that software development for a tablet wouldn't take off have been pretty well assuaged by the success of the App Store, Bilton notes, and there's -- good gracious -- actual quotes: "I can't really say anything, but, let's just say Steve is extremely happy with the new tablet," says a senior Apple employee; a former Apple staffer quips that "You will be very surprised how you interact with the new tablet." I'm getting tingling in my extremities.
- Lastly, late on Christmas Eve, MacRumors posted evidence that Apple purchased the iSlate.com domain back in 2007. An advance effort to pluck the necessary Internet real estate off the market, knowing that the tablet would be ready someday?
