  • Found Footage: Homemade stratospheric capsule uses iPhone GPS

In the midst of all the excitement and hype surrounding today's announcements, we thought we'd share this popular and heart-warming tale of a father and son believing in their dreams and reaching for them.

Seven-year-old Max Geissbuhler and his dad, Luke Geissbuhler, dreamed of visiting space. After eight months of determination and preparation, and with the help of a weather balloon, a HD video camera and an iPhone, they got pretty close. Housing the equipment in a specially designed, insulated case (filled with some hand-warmers) and the hopes of capturing "the blackness beyond our earth," the pair launched their explorer in August of this year. The video above is the story of that journey.

Climbing almost 19 miles, their craft flew into the stratosphere, capturing some rather impressive video footage along the way. International convention puts space at 100km. Once the weather balloon burst (due to lack of atmospheric pressure), the capsule began its decent back to the Earth -- aided by a deployed parachute.

But how did they locate the unit once it had landed back on earth? Well, that's where the iPhone came into play. They used a GPS tracking app on a borrowed iPhone (that's how you know who your real friends are, by the way) to locate the downed capsule and recover it.

From all of us at TUAW, we say well done to you, Max and Luke Geissbuhler. The family is now gauging interest in a 'how-to' book for other parental explorers.

  • Software updates: Aperture 3.1, Java Update 3, and ProKit Update

Three big updates just showed up in Software Update: Aperture 3.1, Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, and ProKit Update.

Aperture 3.1 weighs in at nearly 375 MB. Aside from the usual improvements to "overall stability and performance," Aperture 3.1 brings compatibility with the brand new iLife '11 suite. There's also a whole host of bug fixes -- too many to list here, honestly.

Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 is about 78 MB and updates Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_22.

The ProKit Update "fixes issues with user interface software that is shared by Apple's professional applications," which includes Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Aperture, Final Cut Express, Soundtrack, Logic Studio, Logic Pro, MainStage, WaveBurner and Logic Express. The specific issues this ~14 MB update addresses:

-- Improves reliability for browsing iPhoto libraries in Aperture.
-- Addresses cosmetic issue with appearance of disclosure triangles in Aperture.
-- Fixes a problem in Logic Pro and MainStage where numeric parameters display incorrect information.

All three updates are available via Software Update now, so fire it up.

  • Apple posts guidelines for Mac App Store (and we have highlights)
Apple has posted the Review Guidelines for what will soon be the omnipresent Mac App Store, and many developers aren't happy with what they're seeing. Like the iOS App Store, Apple will control the gates and review each application before it's posted. 70% of the profits will go to the developers, and 30% will presumably pay for chairs in which Steve Jobs and the rest of his executive team will sit to watch the iOS App Store money roll in.

We took the liberty of rounding up some of the most intriguing lines from the document so that those of you who don't have access to the developer portal can get the highlights. According to Apple, your Mac app will be rejected if:
    • It is a "beta," "demo", "trial," or "test" version
    • It duplicates apps already in the App Store, particularly if there are many of them
    • The developer is "spamming" the App Store with many versions of similar apps. You will also be removed from the Developer Program if this occurs.
    • It is not packaged and submitted using Apple's packaging technologies included in Xcode - No third party installers are allowed.
    • It require license keys or implements its own copy protection
    • It spawns processes that continue to run after a user has quit the app without user consent
    • It has metadata that mentions the name of any other computer platform
    • It uses location-based APIs to control vehicles, aircraft, or other devices (Saying goodbye to my Macbook Air tank project. Sigh.)
    • It uses location-based APIs for dispatch, fleet management, or emergency services
    • It has misspelled Apple product names in its name (i.e., GPS for Imac, iTunz)
    • It looks similar to Apple Products or apps bundled on the Mac, including the Finder, iChat, iTunes, and Dashboard
    • Your user interface is "complex or less than very good"
    • It changes the native user interface elements or behaviors of Mac OS X (Well, that just wiped out 90% of the best Mac apps in a single, flaming fist punch.)
    • It creates a store inside itself for selling or distributing other software (i.e., an audio plug-in store in an audio app)
    • Your game portrays realistic images of people or animals being killed or maimed, shot, stabbed, tortured or injured. (Such as Counter Strike, Halo, and pretty much every other good video game ever produced.)
    • "Enemies" within the context of your game solely target a specific race, culture, a real government or corporation, or any other real entity. (I wonder if this applies to zombies...)
    • It contains user generated content that is frequently pornographic (like "Chat Roulette" apps)

Even with that daunting list of red tape, Apple managed to round off the Review Guidelines with a really nice message to those who are creating the apps that sounds like it could be the words of Steve Jobs himself:
"Show them their world in innovative ways, and let them interact with it like never before. In our experience, users really respond to polish, both in functionality and user interface. Go the extra mile. Give them more than they expect. And take them places where they have never been before."

Now that is a philosophy I can get behind.

  • TUAW is looking for news bloggers

Does your feed reader overflow with juicy Apple news? Are you capable of writing crystal-clear copy backed by a deep knowledge of Apple gear and software? TUAW is looking for you!

We're looking for three news bloggers. Here are the specifics:

    • You must be over 18. Sorry, no exceptions. It's US law and AOL policy.
    • If you live on the East Coast and keep regular business hours, this is probably not going to work for us. We are looking for bloggers on Pacific Time (GMT -7:00), somewhere a few hours ahead of the UK (GMT +2:00, preferably) and Asia (GMT +9:00). Bloggers in those time zones will get bumped to the top of the list (unless you keep very odd hours).
    • Fluent English is a prerequisite, but more than that; you must be a master of writing clean copy and understandable headlines, plus you need to grok the use of tags and understand the basics of search optimization.
    • While we love switchers, we're not looking for Apple newbies; you need an experienced view of Apple's products and platforms. We're not necessarily looking for hardcore coders or engineers, either; somewhere in the middle is probably best.
    • You should have a solid understanding of the news business, be familiar with how articles are picked from the hundreds of potential stories out there, and be willing to accept editorial leadership and guidance on a daily basis.
    • Lastly, you must be willing to commit to a regular schedule and post frequently within that schedule. We are looking for dedicated writers with energy, stamina and commitment.

Continue reading for the rest of the details.

  • Why the Mac App Store rocks for developers

No matter how good your application is, no matter how novel, how brilliant, how special -- none of it matters if you don't have anyone to use it. The iOS App Store changed the way developers work by providing a streamlined channel between software developers and potential customers.

Consider my APIkit scanner application. After opening the app to public beta a few months ago, I may have gotten about 200-300 users. Total. (And a grand total of zero feedback, but that's a completely different gripe about public betas.) Contrast with App Store.

As far as I can calculate, I have now shipped well over a million apps in App Store -- that's extrapolating from the 600+ thousand copies that iTunes Connect tells me I've pushed out in the last six months, not including updates and such -- just individual purchases. And no, I haven't earned much from those purchases because nearly everything I've put on App Store to date has been free.

    That's not the point.

Being able to touch that many people's lives, and offer them a few nice utilities, that's the point. Even as a primarily free developer, it's brilliant to know that I can create apps that matter, that entertain, that help. I love when people write me and say: "This app is fun" or "helpful" or "silly" or "delightful." And I wouldn't have been able to do that without App Store.

I've got a ton of lonely little Mac apps sitting on my back burner that I think can help a lot of people. And now there's a chance I can share them in a meaningful way.

Now step back and consider this from a business point of view. If App Store has done this much to help me reach people as a free dev, consider what it can do for a Mac developer's bottom line. App Store sells apps. It connects customers to content, developers to an audience. And that's why it matters.

  • Angry Birds publisher Chillingo acquired for $20 million

In the wake of such huge news from Apple today, it's hard to concentrate on anything else. Here's one story you wont want to miss, though: Chillingo, the publisher behind the wildly popular game Angry Birds, was acquired by EA Games for a cool $20 million in cash.

Not to worry, though, because Angry Birds isn't going anywhere. The rights to the game are actually owned by the developer Rovio, who updated his Twitter profile earlier today to clarify that Angry Birds was not part of the sale and will not be controlled development-wise by EA. Even so, it's no secret that the App Store's most popular game of all time certainly helped to sway EA towards this acquisition. With many successful apps available, Chillingo probably looked pretty delicious to all of the big fish in the game industry who were hoping to cash in on the mobile market.

Now, time to fire up Angry Birds to do some additional research on the story. What? Why are you giving me that look? Yes, I'm working!

  • Software Reinstall USB drive comes with new MacBook Air

During today's "Back to the Mac" event Apple announced a brand new MacBook Air that comes in two screen sizes and features a bevy of upgrades. However, one similarity the new Air has with its lineage is the lack of an optical drive.

For the purpose of re-installing the software that comes with every Mac, this lack of an optical drive was previously overcome by wirelessly sharing an optical drive with another Mac. Today's updated MacBook Air now ships with a stylish USB drive for software re-installation duties.

The MacBook Air can still use a remote optical drive, as well as take advantage of the external MacBook Air SuperDrive. Still, this free accessory will come in handy for those late night software emergencies when friendly computers and Apple Stores are nowhere in sight.

  • FaceTime for Mac: Video hands-on

After some initial downloading hiccups (but thanks for those extra copies of the iWork demo, Apple) the FaceTime Mac beta is up and running.

Setup is dead simple -- enter your MobileMe or Apple ID, or sign up for one if you don't have it. Sign in and you're ready to go. Your email address is your service locator, that's how folks will find you.

There's no resolution settings, no tweaking to do -- considering that most of your chat partners are on iOS devices, that makes perfect sense.

When your contact list comes up (pulled from Address Book), just start typing a name and the list will scroll to the contact. Double-click to call. You can add favorites to distinguish between iPhones and desktop FaceTime setups.

Josh noted that you can also start a call from Mac OS X via URLs like facetime://appleid or facetime://email@address or facetime://phone# -- just put them in Safari's address bar.

In the Preferences, you can add secondary email addresses that callers use to locate you; you'll have to validate those before they're active. The beta status of the app is evident in some text corruption in those fields, but video and audio seem smooth. You can quickly switch from portrait to landscape, but that's about it.

Click through to the rest of the post to see a quick screencast demo call with Megan.

  • Mac App Store announced
Apple today has announced a Mac App Store based upon their popular iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad App Stores. The Mac App Store will offer one-click download of Mac apps, auto-installation, auto-updates, a 70/30 split for developers, and all the apps you buy are licensed for use on all your personal Macs.

A Mac App Store is something that has been suggested in the past by press and readers alike, but few thought one would ever materialize. It will be interesting to see how Mac developers respond to this and if any major developers (like Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) join in. The Mac App Store will be a stand alone app available for Snow Leopard and Lion. Application submissions start in November and the store opens 90 days from today.

  • FaceTime becomes a desktop application
Facetime made its grand debut as part of iOS4 (specifically on the iPhone 4 hardware). It expanded to a nice user base once the fourth generation of the iPod touch was released. In today's event, it was announced that in the first four months of Facetime's existence, said user base grew to 19 million people.

Now those 19 million people will be able to talk to all the customers of Apple Computer who actually purchased a computer! As of today, the beta for FaceTime will be available for computers as well.

Steve did a quick demonstration of FaceTime with Phil Schiller who was on his iPhone 4, and it looked pretty smooth. So far the only notable piece of the announcement is what was missing: A Windows client, or at least integration with an existing messaging application.

It is starting to look like iChat's days might be numbered, since we heard no mention of it and now the way forward appears to have a new icon.

Xander Soren with Apple's product marketing showcased several new features in iLife '11's Garageband including:
    • Groove matching, termed an automatic "spell checker" for bad rhythm, or as TUAW's Kelly Guimont just observed: "Thanks to Garageband, your second grader's Christmas concert can sound like the cast of Glee!"
    • Flextime to make an audio clip longer or shorter
    • Piano and guitar lessons built into the software that includes music recorded by an Indiana chamber group. You get scored on lessons and can see exactly where you missed -- shades of Rock Band and Guitar Hero

  • Apple: Mac sales could sustain a Fortune 500 company by itself

One in five PCs sold in the United States is a Mac, making up 20.67% of U.S. consumer market share, and bringing in triple the amount of money the Mac has earned since fiscal year 2005.

That's the amazing number that Tim Cook, Apple's COO, shared at the beginning of today's "Back to the Mac" conference. Other awesome numbers?
    • Year-over-year growth is 27% for the Mac compared to 11% for the PC
    • There are 600,000 Mac developers
    • 33% of Apple's revenue comes from the Mac. That's enough to fund a Fortune 500 company on its own, and would rank 110th on the list (though it was made clear Apple has no plans to spin the Mac off)
    • More than 75 million people have visited an Apple Store within the last business quarter
    • The stores in China have the highest traffic of any Apple Store, signifying lots of potential in that company
All very impressive numbers for Apple's traditional computing platform. iPhones and iPads are no slouches, either, of course, but the Mac is stronger than ever.

  • TUAW Liveblog of the Apple 'Back to the Mac' event

By now you've probably read our predictions for today's Apple event, and we're sure that you've dusted off your crystal ball as well and come up with your own good ideas about what we'll see and hear today. Now it's time for the TUAW gang to provide you with a play-by-play and commentary of what's going on at the event through our liveblog. For those of you who are working in offices where you're not allowed to watch streaming video, we'll give you a detailed report on what's happening, even if Apple is streaming the event (so far, they haven't announced that they are).

We'll also be entertaining your questions and tweeting highlights on Twitter. Follow us on @tuaw and @tuawlive, or send your questions to us via @ask_tuaw.

Will there be news of a revised MacBook Air? How about Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion?" Perhaps the focus might be on iWork '11 and iLife '11, or cloud-based storage and apps as part of a more cloud-based MobileMe. Maybe we'll see a fusion of iOS design elements into Mac OS X, or an App Store for Macs.

Regardless of the news that we hear in the next hour or two, it's sure to be interesting, controversial, and even (in some cases) frustrating. There may be devices that ship today, but some things we hear about might not make it from Cupertino for another year.

We have a guest blogger providing TUAW with content from the event today: Sam Levin from AppMinute, who joined me a few weeks ago on TUAW TV Live. • Acer Chairman says iPad impact not serious

At a recent talk in Taiwan, Chairman J.T. Wang said he believes demand for netbooks is stable except in the US and the UK. I'm sure that is his hope and fondest dream.

Wang said he thought that early sales of the iPad were simply the result of a rush for the new device. He added that most iPad users were switching to desktops and laptops to write text documents or spreadsheets.

When asked about Acer's loss of market share, the Chairman replied that the drop was "...mainly due to competitors cutting prices to compete, and that Acer did not follow suit."

The report, carried in DigiTimes, noted that the Acer tablet is behind schedule. It will supposedly have a 7" screen and be based on Android. Wang says the company is waiting for "related technologies to mature."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said earlier this week that 7" tablets are not terribly usable, despite rumors that Apple has been working on a tablet of that size.

  • Would-be iTunes competitor pending App Store approval
7digital, a UK-based online music store that offered the first DRM-free tracks from the four major music labels, has submitted an iPhone music store app to Apple, which is currently pending approval by Apple.

The app, already available on Android and BlackBerry phones (it's the number one music app on the BlackBerry app store with 500,000 installs), offers an iPod and iTunes music service replacement. If approved, the 7digital app will compete directly with iTunes on iOS devices.

Offering users the ability to browse, download and play music from the 7digital music store on their iOS device (over 3G or Wi-Fi), the 7digital app will sync users' downloaded music wirelessly to their computers, too - something iTunes does not currently offer. The tracks are offered in 328kbps high quality format and 7digital also plans to introduce a streaming service in the future, though, obviously this would require a further approval from Apple.

According to 7digital's blog, they now offer "the most comprehensive mobile [music] offering on the market." That's a bold statement to make. Having just released their Android app as well as their recently announced, mobile-optimized, web-based, HTML5 forward compatible online music store (accessible on most smartphones as well as scaling for tablet computers, too), 7digital appears to have a certain Apple iTunes Music Store in their crosshairs (if not all digital music stores).

To top it all off, 7digita has announced that there API is powering the music service on Toshiba's Folio 100 tablet as well as Samsung's Galaxy Tab music hub, which 7digital believes will be a "real contender" against the iPad. Although, if the Galaxy Tab's 7-inch screen is anything to go by, Steve Jobs doesn't seem to think it will be very successful.

With Steve Jobs recently saying the iOS model isn't closed, but rather "integrated," will Apple approve an app that is in direct competition with its own iTunes Music Store? It's a tough one to call. Apple has allowed streaming apps like Pandora into the App Store, but to approve an app that would directly purchase and download music on an iOS device that's not from iTunes, that's the big question. We'll keep you posted on any further developments.

  • The store is down!

No, cries the masses as they click on their web browsers in vain to view the Apple Store. But, never fear, it shall be back eventually and we'll have the latest on any changes that are made. New MacBook Air? New iLife or iWork? Patience is a virtue.

  • Chill out with the iPhone-powered massage chair
We've seen an iPhone-controlled R2-D2, a quadricopter, a dog treat dispenser, a tank, and even an iPhone-controlled soda machine. But c'mon people, let's get a little more practical here -- let's hook it up to a massage chair. That's exactly what Human Touch did with the HT-9500. For just US$4,999, you can sit back, relax, and let your iPhone do the massaging. The free HT-Connect app designed to work with the chair allows you to control posture and massage frequency, and you can even set schedules and create programs designed to work your back in just the right way.

Sure, sure, playing Angry Birds or texting friends on your iPhone might be cheaper, but this chair lets you -- oh wait. Yeah, that's the... oh yeah, right there. Oooohhhh yyeeahhhhh.

  • Rumor: MacBook Air downsized details previewed

As the clock ticks down toward today's Back to the Mac event, Engadget relays some insider info from a trusted source regarding the capabilities and specs of the all-but-certain MacBook Air 11.6" form factor subnotebook.

    The details:

    • 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU (with a 2.33GHz BTO option). No surprise that the Core i3/i5 was too much oomph for this configuration.
    • 2GB of memory
    • Mini DisplayPort, USB, and SD card reader along the left-hand side and USB and power on the right. The addition of the 2nd USB port is sure to cheer the hearts of would-be buyers.
    • Buttonless trackpad like the rest of the line.
    • About the same thickness as the current MacBook Air.
    • A black power key now sits immediately to the right of a smaller eject key on the MBA's keyboard -- the round aluminum power button is gone.

Engadget also says their source could not lock down the rumored SSD-on-a-stick storage changes, so that remains mysterious. Apple Insider and Cult of Mac originally reported the likelihood of the smaller MBA.

We'll be live in just about 2 hours with our coverage of the announcements. See you then!

  • TUAW coverage of today's 'Back to the Mac' event

It's Wednesday, October 20th, and that can only mean two things: it's my wife's birthday, and there's an Apple event going on today. TUAW won't be covering my spouse's 55th birthday, but we will have plenty of coverage of all the news that comes out of the "Back to the Mac" event.

As Dave noted earlier, we now expect a QuickTime stream to be available for the event, so you should be able to watch along with us.

We'll start our liveblog coverage at 9:45 AM PDT (12:45 PM EDT) today. TUAW editors and bloggers Victor Agreda, Mike Rose, Erica Sadun, and Dave Caolo are joining me to provide commentary and reports as the news comes through. Sam Levin from AppMinute is our man on the street at the event, keeping us posted with his take on what is happening as it's happening. As with all of our liveblogs, we welcome your comments and questions in the live chat.

At 12:30 PM PDT (3:30 PM EDT), Mike Rose and I will be hosting a special early edition of TUAW TV Live. We'll be discussing the announcements from the event and sharing our opinions, and you can join us in the chat.

Throughout the day, we'll be posting detailed information about all of the announcements, so keep your browser open and pointed at TUAW.com. We're excited about today's event, and we hope that you can experience it along with TUAW.

  • Italian Apple PR: Apple to live stream today's event [Updated]

With only hours to spare, it seems that Apple has announced its intentions to live stream today's press event -- at least it's been announced to Italian customers.

According to Italian site setteB.IT, Apple has issued a media alert stating their intention to live stream today's big announcements. Macstories has posted the full text of the press release, which states (Italian-to-English translation from Babelfsh):

"Apple(R) will transmit to online own event of 20 October using the Live Streaming HTTP of Apple to the vanguard in the field. The vision demands or a Mac(R) with Safari(R) on Mac OS(R) X version 10,6 Snow Leopard(R), or iPhone(R) or a iPod touch(R) with iOS 3,0 or successive version, or a iPad[TM]. The broadcast live it will begin to the 10:00 a.m. 20 PDT of October, 2010 on www.apple.com."

As of this writing, there is no official announcement on Apple.com*or its Italian PR page, so keep that in mind while reading this post. It's exciting, but we'd prefer to hear it from the domestic horse's mouth.

If it does indeed happen, it will be only the 2nd live stream from Apple to require QuickTime X (the Apple TV announcement was the first).

*Update: Apple has posted an announcement.

  • Apple support forums inadvertently leak 10/20 product announcements

All props to Polish blog spidersweb.pl this morning, as they did a bit of sneaky digging into Apple's support forums to turn up compelling evidence of some of the products we expect to see later today.

Knowing that when the forum administrators create new support categories the forum URLs get sequential numbers, writer Przemysław Pająk got curious. Simply editing the address of the forum site to go past the most recent addition (the Apple TV, at #276) reveals a 'Reserved 10 20' forum -- aha!

That alone is a fun discovery, but if you keep going as Spider's Web did, you will rapidly discover forums for iMovie, GarageBand and iPhoto '11, followed by a forum for 'MBA (Need Official Name).' Oops.

If you have "new iLife" and "new MacBook Air" on your Keynote Bingo card, might as well start chilling the champagne now. You might also spare a good thought for the Apple Support forum administration team, which is almost certainly going to have a pretty lousy day at work.

Also note the absence of iWeb and iDVD from the presumptive product line.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • TUAW's Daily App: mScribble
Bebot is still one of my favorite apps on the App Store, and mScribble, a recently revamped app from Appular and a developer named Panpipes Ho!, reminds me a lot of Bebot in its simplicity and versatility. That's pretty high praise indeed if you're as big a fan of Bebot as I am, but if you've never heard of Bebot, let me explain. mScribble is an app that generates a melody for you on the fly. The app plays a simple drum beat in the background with whatever rhythm you want -- there are nine to choose from in the app's menu). Drawing a scribble on the screen plays notes in a melody that's already lined up to the tune. It sounds complicated, but the app does all of the hard work -- just swiping across the screen gives you music, and with a little bit of practice, you can make some really interesting tunes by just playing around.

Unfortunately, it's not quite as friendly to professional musicians as Bebot. This is more of a music generator than an actual instrument, and there aren't as many options. Each tune can play four tones, but you're pretty hard-coded to the drums in the background. But that's a plus for less experienced players -- it means that anyone can sit there, swipe across the screen, and create an interesting melody. It's a lot of fun, and just the ten minutes of random joy I spent playing around with the app was more than worth the buck they're charging for it. I'd like to see the idea developed even further (and Bebot is an excellent model), but for just swiping up a tune, mScribble is a great experience.

  • Apple wins patents to MacBook Air, iChat, iPhone compass icon, more

Macsimum news reports that Apple has received a number of patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. These patents include:

    • iChat, involving its video conferencing
    • A stereo-windowing system with translucent window support involving Quartz Extreme
    • A news-feed viewer
    • A portable power source
    • Two MacBook Air-related patents
    • A patent design for the iPhone compass icon
As with all patents, these designs might never appear in actual shipping products (except the iPhone's compass icon, of course). Then again, we may see evidence of some of them in today's "Back to the Mac" announcements, especially if the MacBook Air does get updated.

  • Doodle Jump updated to Doodlestein Halloween edition
I know I'm extremely late to the game, but I only just downloaded and started playing Doodle Jump two weeks ago. Since then, I've become addicted to it, both on my iPhone and iPad.

Doodle Jump has been updated to version 1.24, which introduces a new Halloween theme: Doodlestein! The update includes new monsters (zombies, vampires, and witches among them) in the Halloween theme, plus broken bone platforms and a broompack (a jetpack made from a witch's broom).

Doodle Jump developer Lima Sky also announced that the next version of Doodle Jump will support Game Center. Now the only thing I'm waiting for is an iPad version of the app. Version 1.24 of Doodle Jump is free to those who have already purchased the app; for everyone else, Doodle Jump is US$0.99 in the App Store.

  • Greenpois0n jailbreaks the Apple TV

A tweet from developer p0sixninja would seem to show a neatly jailbroken Apple TV, which is good news for those looking forward to hacking and tweaking Apple's $99 hobby. No word yet on when the jailbreak will be publicly available.

Among our speculations looking forward to Wednesday's Apple event, despite its 'Back to the Mac' focus, is the announcement or pre-announcement of an App Store and SDK for the iOS-based Apple TV.

  • Report: Android ad revenue beats iPhone, iOS and smartphone market still growing

Millenial Media has released its latest report on cross-platform mobile advertising, and the iPhone has lost another step on the Android platform. According to Millenial's reporting, revenue for advertising from the Android platform has exceeded iPhone-only revenue. That's not quite as bad as it sounds -- the Android platform, as we already know, has outstripped the iPhone in terms of user numbers, just because there are so many more available handsets and carriers for those devices. Android ad requests, according to the company, are up a crazy 1283% since January of this year, and have gone up 26% month over month.

That's not to say that iOS is slouching -- its revenue growth increased 316% in the last quarter, and impression growth increased by 156%. Apple is still the leading device manufacturer on the network, with a 30% market share, and the company makes two of the top four "connected devices" in the iPad and the iPod touch, with the Sony PSP and PS3 rounding out that list.

It's also interesting to note that smartphone impressions overall are still growing -- this isn't a down and dirty fight between the manufacturers yet, as there are still new customers to grab out there. Smartphone impression share went up 7% month-over-month, so this is still a growing market.
